HINODEYA Ramen has been one of the more popular ramen spots in San Francisco's Japantown for a while, and a lot of people recommend it whenever ramen in the area comes up, so I finally decided to give it a try. Overall, I thought it was good and definitely worth trying, but not necessarily mind-blowing or unforgettable. It's the kind of place that delivers a solid bowl of ramen, though the high expectations probably made it feel a little less impressive than I anticipated. The restaurant itself has a nice modern Japanese atmosphere, and it was pretty busy when we went. There was already a line outside, so it definitely seems like one of the more popular spots in Japantown. Service and table turnover were both fairly efficient, so the overall experience felt smooth despite the crowd. Besides their signature ramen, I also tried the asari ramen, which honestly ended up being the bowl that stood out more to me. They were generous with the clams, and the broth had a light seafood sweetness that made it feel very comforting and refreshing compared to heavier tonkotsu-style ramen. Especially on a colder day, the clam-based broth felt warm and satisfying without being overly rich. The noodles had a good texture, and overall the flavors worked well together. That said, while everything tasted good and the quality was clearly there, I never really had that "wow, this is amazing" moment. Maybe it's because San Francisco has so many strong ramen spots now, or maybe because I had heard so many recommendations beforehand, but after finishing the meal, it felt more like a very solid and reliable ramen shop rather than one that completely blew me away. I do think people who prefer lighter dashi-style broths will probably enjoy this place more than those who mainly like very thick, rich tonkotsu ramen. As a stop during a day in Japantown, it's still a great choice, and I can absolutely understand why it stays so popular. For me personally though, it was more "consistently good" than truly unforgettable.

Cozy space inside -- lots of seating indoor and outdoor. Good spot for bigger groups too. The menu here is more limited than the hinodeya on Chestnut, but I tried the vegan creamy ramen today and it was so good! It's a soy milk based broth but the flavor is very rich and I loved the kale & sweet tofu skins. The ramen is also made of spinach and has a thicker consistency/lots of chew. The portions are always huge and service is very quick and efficient. It does get pretty loud inside when packed but the vibe is lively and bright.

    Tokyo Duck Ramen

This was honestly one of the most disappointing ramen experiences I've had. I ordered the duck ramen, which was nearly $40, and it was not worth the price. The duck tasted mostly like burnt seasoning, and the broth was surprisingly bland and lacked the depth and flavor you'd expect from a good bowl of ramen. The karaage was actually the best part of the meal. The service didn't help the experience either. After we had already been seated and settled in, we were asked to move to another table to accommodate a larger group. While we agreed, it was inconvenient and not something you expect after you've already gotten comfortable. The restaurant was also extremely loud, making it difficult to enjoy the meal or conversation. To top it off, the end of the experience felt rushed and unfriendly. The waitress came over, handed us the payment device and bill without asking how the food was or whether we needed anything else. It felt more like we were being rushed out than treated as guests. For the price, quality of food, and overall service, I left very disappointed. Unfortunately, I won't be returning.

we got the spicy miso ramen, and we found it to actually not be that spicy at all but the ramen was so soft and the broth very tasty. the edamame was ok, ive definitely have had better.

I haven't been to ramen in this area in a long time. This spot is across from a spot I used to frequent and though this place was familiar in name- I wasn't sure with whether this place has been acquired by someone other than it's historical legacy(which is common these days and then the quality immediately suffers with "saving money " =lower quality food. Such a bummer-so I wasn't sure & nervous. The combinations were kind of limited too. I tend to be a miso or tantan ramen person. The TanTan (cover picture)had a bunch of stuff I didn't want- spicy ground pork and something else..the miso ramen only came in spicy or spicy with corn. I was torn- but it was a cold rainy day and I needed to warm up. So I just went with the regular spicy Miso Ramen. (They said it's not too spicy)-with corn is + $2 So it came- and was so delicious! I think I get in my head of making my own ramen and those costs- what you forget is a well built broth! (Which this was.) On the table is this jar of Crunchy fried garlic and something-so delicious-I kept adding it. Was super happy and satisfied! The lady checking me out- with the bill was from Osaka to which we were both surprised-I am from nearby. So a good laugh- but i didn't ask if it's still Japanese owned. When I entered it was pretty empty to where one can't tell if it a local busy spot like my last place I used to go. But in my wait time and eating- the place was Full! They beat the drum each time people enter. I sat near the front door so my view was the front door and a window to the outside. Inside seemed cozier. I recommend that- the cold air keeps hitting you where I sat. They only offered me the front little table or I had to sit at the counter-which doesn't suit me. But-It was totally delicious- the on table toppings adds an extra 1/2 to full star for me.

Not a bad place for ramen. Located near japantown. You get an option to sit outside or inside. I got the spicy miso ramen which is their popular ramen. It wasn't that spicy unless you request to be more spicy. Broth has tasty. Comes with two pork, half an egg, some bamboo, and green onion. I do like the texture of their noodle. Food came out reasonable time. Price is anywhere from 18 to 21ish or more depending on what ramen you get. Also got the takoiyai, come in 4 pieces for $8 or $9.

I went with a group of about 10 people at around 8pm and they were so nice and accomodating of our large group. The menu is not large, but we still had trouble deciding what we wanted because everything looked do good! I got the vegetarian ramen and the broth is really what makes it. It was excellent, and the whole table was very happy with what we ordered. Thank you for a great experience!

Always love the ramen here! It's so rich with flavor. The chashu was a nice, thick cut of pork and noodles were perfect. Unfortunately, I felt my soup was slightly too salty that day. Otherwise, they're usually consistent with their ramen. Got lucky with no wait time for Sunday lunch. Quick, friendly service.

I have a fond memory of eating spicy miso ramen here a couple years ago and loving it, so I was excited to come back and order a spicy miso ramen again. Unfortunately, the ramen noodles were too soft for my liking. There was no chew or bite, it was soft. That's a huge no-no for me when it comes to ramen. On the bright side, the broth was delicious and I have no negative things to say about the broth! It's worth a try, but hopefully you get chewy noodles when you go (unless you like soft noodles, then I hope you get soft noodles). Service was good, the waitresses were nice.

Great service, we were able to dine in with a large party of 7 under no reservation. The table was ready within a couple of minutes. The ambiance isn't anything special but it's in the cute plaza across the mall in Japantown. I enjoyed my vegan ramen with spinach noodles and I'm a kale lover, it had loads of Kale + seaweed, inari tofu, and calabaza. Shishito peppers were a nice shareable bite. Overall, I liked my experience but I prefer Marufuku! Just a preference hehe. Big difference is a shorter wait time, at least this location.

I've been here a few times and it's a pretty good ramen spot but there are definitely better out there. Nice thing is it's right in the center of Japantown with lots of seating inside and outside. When we came for lunch on a Friday service was fast and there were a lot of staff working. I got the chicken umami ramen with spinach noodles. Broth was hearty and clean. Chicken was tender and soft. Spicy miso ramen was okay. Chicken karaage and green gyoza was also mid. I feel the quality is not as good as it used to be

Hands down one of my favorite ramen restaurants in the city! My go to order is the spicy miso ramen and shishito peppers. I usually DoorDash from here but decided to dine in on this rainy day in SF. Fantastic service and staff were welcoming. Plenty of street meter or garage parking. Bon appetite!

Once we got closer to the front, the host came by to hand us menus so we knew what to order as soon as we were seated. The restaurant is pretty small so the dining experience feels a little hectic. If you're looking for a calm, relaxing place to eat, I wouldn't say this is the place. It's sort of an "in and out" situation. I ordered the spicy G.K.O. So so delicious. My only real complaint was the seating arrangement. My wife and I were seated at a shared counter-style table that was divided by a glass partition. While the partition provided some separation, I could still clearly see the people sitting directly across from us, along with all the eating noises and conversations. I personally prefer a little more privacy while dining, so that took away from the experience. I won't comment on the wait time because that's pretty normal for popular restaurants in San Francisco. The highlight of the meal was definitely the A5 Wagyu Ramen. It was absolutely delicious and worth ordering. The flavors were amazing, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting. Overall, the food was outstanding, and despite the seating arrangement, I would gladly return.

The wait for a table was 20 mins or we can share a large table with random people and be seated immediately. We were hungry. We went with the large shared table. Pleasantly, there was more than enough room. There were at least 1-2 seats in between the three groups on each side that were there- a solo diner, a small family of 3, and my group of 4. I ordered the Karaka Spicy, my bf ordered Akamaru Modern, his sister ordered Miso, and I don't remember what her friend got- I think it was also Karaka spicy. My bf and I ordered the Treasure plate on the side to share and a side of spicy paste because I know Japanese spicy is barely spicy (from someone who grew up eating SEA spicy). Karaka Spicy had a nicely balance tonkotsu mouth feel and pork flavor. Broth was a little salty. I was correct to assume that it wasn't spicy because I used half of the side of spicy paste and I still didn't think it was spicy enough. Chashu was cooked fine. Notes: - I wished I would've asked if they could swap the thin noodles for the thick ones. I love the chew thicker noodles provide. - Noodles were cooked al dente. Akamaru Modern tasted very similar to Karaka spicy without the spicy. My bf used the other half of the spicy paste as dip for his toppings. He enjoyed it. Miso was a lighter broth (obvi) with a good umami flavor and was not watered down. Solid. She loved it. I have never seen her finish a whole bowl of ramen before. There was a server in training that took our order with the help of the trainer- he did great. Staff was attentive with our waters. Bussers were also quick to notice and remove empty plates and bowls regularly making for an easy clean up after we leave and kept the shared table clutter free. Interior was modern, but casual. They had an expansive menu with vegetarian choices, sushi, buns, karage, etc. and a surprisingly large array of alcohol. I would def like to be back to try some drinks.

At that price point, I expected more both in quantity and flavor. We ordered the Dragon Tantan ramen, which the menu describes as spicy. It wasn't spicy at all. We asked our waiter if we could have a little more heat, and he nodded and brought over a tiny dipping-bowl-sized portion of some red paste with no explanation. There was no mention that it would cost extra. After finishing our meal, we were surprised to see a $5 charge on the bill for the "extra spice." I've been to plenty of Japanese/Ramen spots and I've been running into the issue where I say I have a soy allegry and there is an assumption that I have a gluten issue (I do not have a gluten issue). I noticed yelp said they have soy-free options and thus called on Friday thinking it might be a bad idea as they're usually busy.. It was defintely hard for the person to hear a bit when they picked up. The staff did relay something about gluten free noodles.. Anyways, they said they could swap out any of the soy soups for salt (but soy can encompass a lot of things so I still wasn't feeling super confident but we're going to give it a go). We go and I asked which 4 of the soups I was eyeballing don't have soy - the staff said they can accomodate and replace any of the soy soups with a salt broth. After we ordered, the staff came back and checked in to make sure that my partner also didn't have an allergy. And my dish came out, they told me there was no egg as its marinated in soy - perfect to me. I'm glad that was caught as not every establishments can account for everything. - Now I have a spot to (more safely) eat ramen! - I advise that if you do have an food allergy, do talk to the staff, and address your concerns such as cross contamination etc. I had a great experience, but I do find that because its not so regulated or understood and there is lack of education amongst the food/resturant industry - you always need to advocate for yourself and there is always a risk. Okonomoyaki tater tots - 8.5/10 from a potato lover!! This does have some sort of cheese on it so beware if you don't eat it Hamachi Hand Roll - 9/10 SO GOOD. I think the rice is mixed in with soy sauce. It was super flavorful which I wasn't expecting Scallop Hand Roll - 8/10, the yuzu on top was absolutely delicious & scallop was very soft. Kobe Skewer - 7/10, it was good but nothing extraordinary. It'll hit the spot if you like meat skewers Yuzu Tori Skewer - 7/10, same as the kobe skewer, but the yuzu on top was delicious Niku Ramen - 8/10, good portion & very very flavorful. I'm glad that they gave a lot of meat in this. I shared this & they provided an extra bowl without me asking :) It's also not super spicy. Hokkaido Milk Pudding - 8/10, the pudding itself was so good but the sauce was a little too sweet for me. However, my partner has a sweet tooth and loved it :) Will totally come again, everything was so yummy and so glad to have tried it!
