Not usually a big ramen person, but Ushi Taro was so good!! The main stand outs were the meat (tender and slightly medium) and jammy egg (super flavorful)! would definitely come back.

Ramen was solid! Restaurant is quaint and cozy. Would go here again for a quick bite.

I was excited to try Ushi Taro Ramen since it has a really high review, and a beef based ramen is very rare. I gotta say I was pretty disappointed. I got the traditional paitan with the bone marrow for the heck of it, and a side of beef kara-age. The paitan really didn't have much flavor, tasted maybe like drinking diluted beef stock. The noodle was pretty good and the bone marrow had a nice fat to it. Another let down was the beef filet that had a little bit gamey flavor somehow. The beef kara-age was actually pretty good though. They also did a really good job of the presentation of the plates. The staffs were nice and the store was very clean and well kept. But, I'm here at the ramen store to have some ramen, and ramen in the end, all comes down to the broth and it did not deliver unfortunately. Perhaps the other ramen are better but the traditional paitan is sadly a 2 star for me.

We went a little before 6pm on a weekday and was able to get seated immediately but soon after 6pm the restaurant quickly filled up. The most delicious part was the karaage since it was juicy and flavorful! The ramen was also rich and tasty. Would definitely recommend and come again.

Small space but ample counter seating so just a minute or so waiting on a Sunday afternoon. Solid bowls of beef ramen, perfectly cooked slices, and my paitan was all the creamy broth I wanted. I tried some of the shoyu, meh, but admittedly not one of my favorite broths. A sprinkle of shichimi worked well to cut the richness a tad and we left with my soup meter maxed.

I really love that there is consistency between the two locations. Food is great quality and service is good. It's always best to get the black garlic add on in your order. It adds so much more depth and flavor! The space is perfect for solo diners. I think the only thing missing at this location is the oxtail. Overall great vibe.

Probably a 3.5. Not a bad ramen, soup was a little salty. They are known for the bone marrow so we added that, it is very fragrant yet oily. Casual seating, not very busy.

I live across the street from the SoMa location and I was never a huge fan of their ramen. I've tried the spicy ramen and added bone marrow and it was fancy, but I don't feel like it justified the price of a $30 ramen bowl. They use beef filet and have truffle in some of their dishes but it doesn't standout and it truly doesn't need the truffle. What I will say is that their beef katsu rice plate is the best I've had in the city. Their curry isn't sweet like most other places, more traditional to Japanese curry. It has nice veggie chunks and comes with a marinated soft boiled egg. I am addicted to this, it is absolutely perfect. It comes with a tender beef tenderloin katsu and a delicious side of their bone broth with is, I believe, their shio ramen broth. If you come to this restaurant I'd recommend this over their ramen. It is always 10/10 and a very generous portion.

So I checked out Ushi Taro in SOMA around 5:45pm this Friday, no wait at all. The place is tiny, maybe fits 30 people max. I went with the Shio ramen because I wanted something light and would love a clear broth and I thought a signature paitan broth would be too rich and heavy to handle. Big mistake. Hmm the broth was a bit... underwhelming... like, it was "clean" but just felt like salt water, bland and salty. There was no complexity, no sweetness from the bone, no nothing (I mean, ramen broth is literally the soul of the food and I really expected it to be complex). I also added the bone marrow since everyone on the internet hypes it up, but it just... tasted like straight grease. Maybe it works better in the spicy or paitan broth, but for my order it just made everything oily without adding any flavor. Other toppings like mushroom or egg were just okay, nothing stood out. Maybe the only miracle here was the beef filet. Like it was so soft and literally melted in my mouth. They know how to cook meat, but sadly it's the only thing I liked here. Probably won't be back.

We arrived at 7PM on a weekday and got seated right away. I ordered the spicy ramen and added their black garlic oil! The food came out pretty fast, maybe 10 minutes? The ramen was amazing! The noodles were really springy and were the classic curly ramen texture. The broth was rich and full of flavor, I think the garlic oil added a lot of depth too! My only complaint was that the broth got really salty as you got to the bottom, but that's not a big deal to me. My friend said the black garlic oil made the beef taste really good. Also for the price ($18 without the oil), it was so worth it! Usually, places charge extra for spicy versions of their ramen. I would highly recommend coming here and will likely bring people in the future! There isn't a lot of seating, so come early and maybe call ahead for bigger groups to ask about seating.

Ramen was very tasty! We also got the gyoza appetizer which was also very good. The SOMA location is pretty small, with mostly counter seating and only a few two-top tables. We did have to wait a bit for a party of three but it wasn't too bad. Their menu is pretty simple so it won't take long to figure out what you want! I would definitely recommend adding the garlic oil, and I went for the spicy ramen which was delicious! The bone marrow also seemed like a very popular add on, which I opted out of this time but it seems like I may have to add it during my next visit!

The ramen broth was savory and satisfying, and the noodles were cooked perfectly. I also liked the warm atmosphere and Japanese-style decor. The only downside was that it got pretty busy during peak hours, so there was a bit of a wait. Overall, still a solid ramen spot and worth trying.

Small space, but good service. Both ramens had a nice broth and beef was very tender. It was a solid bowl of ramen, no complaints, it doesn't quite fall into the I will crave this until I go back category.

I was in SF one afternoon and decided to kill an hour by waiting in their line. I showed up at 3.10 PM and there was no line, I stood anyway and later the line built up behind me. Place is not the safest, I saw some folks trying to open the parked cars on that street hoping to find one that was unlocked . Not all folks who made it before their 4 PM opening managed to get a table in the first round. The place only seats around 20 people or so and they have a mandatory requirement that each person has to order a bowl of ramen. We got the following *enoki chips: 3/5: salty, limp, greasy to the point of floating in a pool of oil. *vegan tantanmen-2.5/5- disappointed by this one. Had better vegan ramen at several other establishments. The version here has two dominant flavors- extremely smoky and bitter. The kale didn't help as well. The enoki chashu was interesting though, had the texture of meat. *classic toripaitan-4.5/5- this was good and I can see why it got the awards. Had a rich and deep taste of chicken. All the elements helped elevate the bowl. *spicy lamb miso cumin-4/5- the flavors of cumin and lamb just shone through here. If you enjoy the flavor of lamb get this. The fried eggplant was epic in this dish. Overall, not worth the wait, the vegan ramen can be avoided unless you are a vegan. Get the classic toripaitan as that was the best.

The ambiance is extremely loud in there and the tables are very close together. So if you're looking for a quiet, less crammed space, this isn't it. The actual restaurant looks very nice, but not sure why the bar seats face a storage area with clear windows. As for the food, the calamari was delicious, they give you whole pieces of little squid. The ramen broth is very hearty and bold. When I was halfway through, it became a little too much. I do wish you're able to pick the thickness of noodles. I didn't like the thin noodles with the ramen. It actually reminded me of instant ramen. But to each their own with noodle thickness. I just wish there were options. I almost wish there was something else in the ramen to balance out the flavor besides more bold flavors from the pork and egg. It does the job but wasn't a huge wow factor. As for the service, they are pretty attentive. I didn't like how one of the servers kept hovering around the entire time grabbing anything they could off the table. The second we took off the wrappers of the chopsticks, they grabbed it. Usually I like the table cleared out to make space but it was the constant hovering that was awkward.

We were greeted upon entering the restaurant and someone rang what to believe to be a gong?! It was a very fun addition to our experience. We were shown to a table and started browsing the menu. The interior was very clean and neat. There are plenty of options, including some for vegetarians/vegans. My two vegetarian friends ordered both of the vegan/vegetarian ramen options and were raving about them. I ordered the Hinodeya (house) ramen and it was delicious. The broth was so flavorful and the noodles were perfect. The table is set with crispy garlic or onions (can't remember) and a chili blend which were yum on top of the ramen. My friends ordered the spicy miso ramen and was satisfied despite it not being very spicy. We had great service the entire time and the prices were very reasonable. Hinodeya is a gem I will be revising on future trips to San Francisco!

They allegedly have a few limited reservation slots but a majority of their service is first come first serve. You stand in line and wait. I would not recommend coming in large groups. In fact, I'd go as far as to say groups larger than 4 are basically contraindicated. The space inside is quite tight, think narrow, barstool-height seating and tiny tables. When my friend and I were seated after about a 40 min wait, we had spent so much time perusing the menu that we basically knew what we were going to get. Service was really kind and quick. My thoughts on the food below: Kabocha croquet: these were freshly fried and served PIPING hot. The perfectly crisp exterior and soft, non mushy interior were just the perfect textures contrasted against each other. The sweetness of the pumpkin meant that the vinegar heavy house dipping sauce was a requirement not a suggestion. The side salad also provided some freshness with each bite, not that the croquets were too greasy at all! They were well drained so just the crunch remained without the oil. Tori Tsukune: these Japanese chicken meatball skewers were HUGE and DELICIOUS. Perfectly grilled with a charred taste, relentlessly tender inside. Dipped in the accompanying soy sauce and egg yolk mixture it was simply heavenly. The yolk added a mild richness to each bite. Hotate carpaccio: this was the most unique take on scallops I've had in a while. The flavors seem strange at first glance (and first taste, if I'm being totally honest), but it took no more than two chews for me to change my tune. First off, the scallops are plump, crisply sweet, and buttery soft in the way that high quality scallops are. Next, the onion and yuzu provide a sharp yet floral aroma to each bite. The floral taste was initially jarring but became addictive. The drizzle of cream sauce on top tempered the sharpness and gave the dish a smooth finish. Truly a memorable scallop dish!! Midori udon: a scallop and pesto stir fry udon dish. This was unexpected combo when I read the menu, but it was so good! The briny and sweet little scallops were cooked to a perfect tender texture and they paired well with the mild, herbaceous pesto. The udon provided the perfect slurp. While I'm more of a soup noodle girl myself, this was an addictive and unique Japanese-Italian fusion! Niku Ramen: Taniku has a lot of inventive ramen offerings but the niku ramen stood out to me. I've had and enjoyed niku udon before, though I usually find the broth to be too sweet. This dish took all the best parts of niku udon - the mountains of tender, marinated beef, the soft boiled egg, the tender onions - and put them into a richer, heartier broth with thin ramen noodles and the outcome was fantastic. One of the most memorable bowls of ramen I've had in a while. The broth was seriously delicious. I'm such a big soup person so I keep coming back to that. It wasn't too sweet or too salty in the way that a lot of noodle soup broths are, but still managed to impart a ton of flavor. The meaty, fishy flavor was so drinkable. For the quality and quantity of food vs the price you pay, I was incredibly impressed by Taniku Izakaya!!!! Just banger after banger after banger. I saw that they have some good happy hour deals as well so I will definitely be coming back for more of their delightful apps and skewers. I cannot recommend this spot enough, there's a reason people queue for it.

I've been to plenty of Japanese/Ramen spots and I've been running into the issue where I say I have a soy allegry and there is an assumption that I have a gluten issue (I do not have a gluten issue). I noticed yelp said they have soy-free options and thus called on Friday thinking it might be a bad idea as they're usually busy.. It was defintely hard for the person to hear a bit when they picked up. The staff did relay something about gluten free noodles.. Anyways, they said they could swap out any of the soy soups for salt (but soy can encompass a lot of things so I still wasn't feeling super confident but we're going to give it a go). We go and I asked which 4 of the soups I was eyeballing don't have soy - the staff said they can accomodate and replace any of the soy soups with a salt broth. After we ordered, the staff came back and checked in to make sure that my partner also didn't have an allergy. And my dish came out, they told me there was no egg as its marinated in soy - perfect to me. I'm glad that was caught as not every establishments can account for everything. - Now I have a spot to (more safely) eat ramen! - I advise that if you do have an food allergy, do talk to the staff, and address your concerns such as cross contamination etc. I had a great experience, but I do find that because its not so regulated or understood and there is lack of education amongst the food/resturant industry - you always need to advocate for yourself and there is always a risk. I'm very apperciative of the staff here.

I can tell because she watches me as I select my tip, and her eyes change.

Great Ramen and mochi ice cream! Service was fast and fun…read moreand food came fast. Kids loved it too. Ambiance seemed authentic and they do a cool welcome as guest arrive!

We came to Hinodeya Downtown location for dinner on a weekday for dinner and was pleasantly…read moresurprised by all the varieties of meal sets you can get here. Food 4/5: we ordered the pork katsu rice bento with mini creamy ramen and the Yu Ling chi chicken bento with the spicy miso mini ramen. Everything tasted fresh and hot. We particularly liked the pork katsu, it was perfectly crispy, juicy and well seasoned with the katsu sauce. The ramen didn't have much topping (just scallion and Naruto) but the soup and noodles texture were great. I was looking forward to the Yu Lin chi chicken but was not a big fan of the sauce flavor, it was salty and slightly one note. Rice was well cooked in the bento but I could do without the edamame, they weren't cooked long enough so it was hard to get out of the shell and bland. Service 3/5: we were seated pretty immediately but had to wait quite awhile before anyone served us, it might be because we were more towards the corner and the restaurant was busy. We had to get up to find a server to help us with checking out because no one ever came to check up on us. Ambiance 4/5: nice space, slightly cramped, but generally nice with the exposed brick walls and high ceiling. There's also outdoor seating available here.
