    Crispy Mushroom
    Bruce W.

I came here after seeing a friend's post, we arrived and out was pretty busy, still it was only a 10 minute wait. We were quickly seated, there's a decent amount of tables and I think you're meant to eat and be on your way, kind of like an actually ramen shop. The food was pretty good, I wasn't amazed, no ramen in the city really amazes me, but I wasn't disappointed. The crispy mushrooms were probably my favorite item flavor wise. It's definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.

The meat was delicious, the broth tasty and the noodles perfectly cooked. Not soggy, with the right amount of bite to it. The crispy mushrooms were also really good! I'm not a big fan of fried food, but this one was delicious! I definitely want to come back and try their rice bowls! They sounded really good! Plenty of counter sitting and a few tables.

Finally got to try Ushi Taro and maybe I need to try it again because I wasn't a fan of it My bf and I ordered the spicy shoyu ramen and the spicy ramen (beef broth). I added a bone marrow in my shoyu ramen as my bf said I have to try it once to see if I enjoy it. My spicy shoyu ramen was good but I felt the bone marrow wasn't anything special. It was suppose to elevate the ramen and soup base but it didn't do much to it. I tried my bf spicy ramen broth and it was so salty that we had to ask for a regular bone broth to add to the soup. Although it was slight better, it was way to salty considering my bf like salty foods. Maybe because we went about 1.5 hours before it closed but we both agreed we had better ramen before.

Went to Ushi Taro Ramen last weekend. Was a paradigm changing experience. Would highly recommend getting the black garlic and bone marrow addons. It adds an incredible umami to the dish that I haven't seen replicated anywhere else. Vibes were also great. It's walk in only and a pretty quaint space, so feels really intimate when eating your meal.

I am rarely in SF so I haven't had the chance to explore the food scene here, but my bf took me here once and I am already in love! This might currently be a top contender for my personal favorite ramen. Let me just say that I am rarely in SF because driving and parking just sucks. This place is no different, but I like that it is near Golden Gate Park, so you have plenty of things to do if you are sticking around the area. This is also a plus since the restaurant is quite small, so there may be a wait if you come at the wrong time. Crispy mushroom (5/5) - If you're getting any appetizer here, you cannot go wrong with the crispy mushroom. The texture and flavor is fantastic. A little on the salty side, but it's just so yummy. Traditional Paitan (5/5) - Their ramen is so delicious and it has a good balance of richness and flavor without being too heavy. The beef filet is a nice tender meat and is different from the usual chashu. There's also a good portion of it in proportion to the noodles. I'm also a sucker for truffle, and it is obviously present without being too overwhelming. I also add garlic oil because who doesn't love garlic? My bf got the same dish and also added on the bone marrow which we ended up splitting. I think the bone marrow is good, but I could definitely do without it; it doesn't add much more to the dish that I think is worth an extra $10. Service is quick and on a cold night, they definitely blast the heater in there which is nice. I already came back here a second time within two months because I like it that much. It's good ramen at a no frills type of place, and I would recommend it to my friends.

Back for more ramen but their appetizers are also da bomb! The crispy mushrooms and roasted beef filet are musts to accompany your ramen. Great space, warm service and excellent value.

I wanted to like the food. I truly did. Ushi is located in inner sunset in San Francisco. The restaurant is small and cozy with limited seating. We were greeted by the friendly hostess who offered us a table in lieu of the barstool option. I ordered the beef kara-age as a starter. It's not what I was expecting, but it was tasty. It's a shareable dish, which was the plan. I really like the fact that they included a lemon wedge which we promptly squeezed over these lightly fried beef pieces. Delicious! We ordered the oxtail tomato ramen. Definitely an interesting dish. The broth very much is reminiscent of tomato soup, but with a much lighter touch. The Ramen noodles were al dente, and it was a fight to try to eat the noodles. The oxtail could've been seasoned a tad more, and we found that there was more bone in the bowl than there was actual meat. Here is where the problem is... I ordered the shoyu ramen, and specifically have asked if it could be made mild or if the broth was already spicy. I was assured that they absolutely could make it mild. In my heart of hearts, I knew better, but I was trusting what I was told. Always trust your instincts. Always. Frankly, it was just inedible. The broth was so spicy that neither one of us could eat it. It literally numbed my tongue instantaneously. When the waitress came over to check on us, I asked if this was their mild version and she realized that they had made a mistake and given me The wrong broth. No harm no foul. She brought over a bowl of broth by itself and said to add it to what I was trying to eat. I tasted the bowl of broth and it was just as spicy if not spicier. A second attempt was made to correct the spicy broth and frankly it was just a miserable fail. Adding spicy broth to more spicy broth is not going to tame the flavor. Especially as I discovered that there were tons of jalapeños and other things floating in the broth, which of course add to the heat . I'm not certain why she thought that this could be made in a mild broth, but she should've encouraged me to order the other Ramen dish that I was contemplating when I specifically said I wanted something mild. We definitely felt rushed to eat since they were closing in 40 minutes, and it just wasn't a pleasurable dining experience overall.

    Chris R.

We came on a Saturday afternoon and there was a mild wait to get into the restaurant. The space inside is small and a bit cramped, but it's not uncomfortable. Service was fast and the employees were nice. I ordered their regular ramen and it was really good!! They have enough meat and the toppings were great. I didn't order their bone marrow add in which looked pretty good/ cool. I really enjoyed their ramen. So much so that I finished the soup. I'd come back.

I've gone a few times recently. I like the traditional paitan with added garlic oil. Beef ramen isn't my go-to, but it's good. I wish the portion were bigger. This is the only ramen I've finished quickly. The egg is done very well. That adds a star.

I started coming to this ramen place a few years ago, and its had its ups and downs. Most recently, I feel like the quality of the food is good again! I came here on a weekend afternooon around 2PM and found seating immediately. Their menu basically has not changed, offering the same appetizers, rice bowls, and classic ramen. My friend tried their Traditional Paitan ramen while I had their Shio ramen. Our ramen came out within 10 minutes. The Shio ramen had clear broth that was not too salty but still deeply flavorful. The portion size was okay, but I was slightly still hungry after my meal. The noodles were perfectly cooked and absorbed the broth well too. Love the atmosphere of this smaller restaurant and the current quality of the place!

One of my go to beef broth ramen places to go to in the Inner Sunset area! Ushi Taro is a small and cozy restaurant that has some limited seats(around 15-20), so not really a great place for huge groups; though they do try to accommodate them. Majority of their dishes are very good and packed with flavor. Service is plenty fast and they offer table QR ordering if you want to as well. They often come by to refill water and/or tea. 1) Beef Karaage(7.5/10) - Super good! The beef version of the typically Japanese chicken karaage. They are lightly battered, crispy and the beef is tender and flavorful. Comes with a lemon wedge to add some acidity to the dish which helps to brighten it up a bit. Great for sharing with the table. 2) Crispy Mushrooms(8/10) - One of my favorite appetizers on the menu! They are lightly battered in tempura and tossed in seasoning. The mushroom's flavor still comes through and there isn't any bad "oil" taste to them. 3) Gyoza(5/10) - Not my favorite version of Gyoza. The gyoza is a bit small and the filling isn't that great(a bit mushy and no distinct texture). The skirt on the gyoza isn't that crispy either. 4) The Spicy Combo(7/10) - A fairly new ramen dish that combines the Spicy Ramen with a Tan Tan beef topping. The combo is a flavor bomb with the spicy beef broth and the flavor packed tan tan beef on top. It spicier than the original spicy ramen one. The spicy miso does over power the beef broth a bit, but overall a very good bowl of ramen if you are looking for something that is spicy and savory! The noodles come out al dente and have a great chew to them. The oyster mushrooms and onsen egg are cooked perfectly; as well as the beef fillets(medium rare), which are very tender. 5) Oxtail Tomato Ramen(6/10) - The broth for this is a bit different than the others. The broth is very thick and tomato forward - kind of reminded me of beef stew. The oxtail is very tender and fall off the bone. It was just a bit too salty for my liking. 6) Hiyashi Chuka(8/10) - Their rendition of the Hiyashi Chuka is one of my favorite dishes here. Very light and refreshing! It is a cold dish and typically comes with a side of the soy sauce+green onions mix to pour over the dish along with a bowl of beef broth. Comes with the toppings of the truffle, onsen egg, oyster mushrooms, medium rare beef fillets and sliced cucumbers. The noodles are chewy and have a bite to them. I typically ask to substitute the soy sauce mix for their ponzu sauce as it adds a tangy undertone to the dish! 7) Original Paitan(7.8/10) - Very rich and creamy beef broth without feeling too heavy. A really well balanced bowl of ramen. Noodles always come out al dente and the toppings are always on par. I would suggest adding the black garlic oil to give the broth a flavor boost.

Needed a quick fix of ramen and this is one of the spots that showed up. I came with 3 people and was seated within 10 minutes on a Saturday evening - didn't need everyone there immediately which is a plus! FOOD : Oxtail. I'm probably a sucker for anything with oxtail. The tomato flavor was a bit much, but overall an excellent blend of the collagen with the tomatoes, and bright flavors to make a good appetizer that might be a bit heavy for some, but I enjoyed it. Spicy ramen. Simply excellent. Noodles were standardly SF good - bouncy and chewy. The broth was delicious. Flavorful, and heavy. The garnish of truffle can be a bit overkill, but when you taste it, it's not overblown and still helps the broth shine. Still a very solid ramen for me. Bone marrow. One of the big draws of this place and overall for good reason. Nicely cooked and just gives each bite of ramen an extra hit of heaviness and umami. A bit pricey, but definitely worth trying at least once to see if you want it again. This is my second time having it and I'd still get it again every now and then. Overall, another solid ramen spot in the city. Service is good, as the place is small enough to not be missed and the vibes are of a slightly upscale/clean simple ramen house. I'll be back.

    Traditional Paitan with bone marrow
    Wayne H.

The marrow bone for $10 is absolutely not worth it. It really adds nothing except for making a great photo. The broth in the paitan is rich and creamy, without being too beefy or heavy - perfectly balanced. Noodles are nice and al dente though if you don't eat fast, they will continue to soften a bit in the broth so I would actually prefer them even more al dente than they come. The beef slices and super tender and flavorful. The spicy combo was a special and seems to be the spicy ramen with the tantan ground beef. Although it was the perfect spice level for me, I'd consider it quite spicy by ramen standards so buyer beware. I agree with another reviewer that the spicy miso they add to the broth overpowers the broth a bit but I still really enjoyed the bowl. Line moves fast because slurping down a bowl should be a quick affair.

Bottom bowl is shoyu, top bowl is paitan. He was proactively given an additional bone because the one in the lower bowl was "small".

I was in SF one afternoon and decided to kill an hour by waiting in their line. I showed up at 3.10 PM and there was no line, I stood anyway and later the line built up behind me. Not all folks who made it before their 4 PM opening managed to get a table in the first round. The place only seats around 20 people or so and they have a mandatory requirement that each person has to order a bowl of ramen. We got the following *enoki chips: 3/5: salty, limp, greasy to the point of floating in a pool of oil. *vegan tantanmen-2.5/5- disappointed by this one. Had better vegan ramen at several other establishments. The version here has two dominant flavors- extremely smoky and bitter. The kale didn't help as well. The enoki chashu was interesting though, had the texture of meat. *classic toripaitan-4.5/5- this was good and I can see why it got the awards. Had a rich and deep taste of chicken. All the elements helped elevate the bowl. *spicy lamb miso cumin-4/5- the flavors of cumin and lamb just shone through here. If you enjoy the flavor of lamb get this. The fried eggplant was epic in this dish. Overall, not worth the wait, the vegan ramen can be avoided unless you are a vegan. Get the classic toripaitan as that was the best.

I've been to plenty of Japanese/Ramen spots and I've been running into the issue where I say I have a soy allegry and there is an assumption that I have a gluten issue (I do not have a gluten issue). I noticed yelp said they have soy-free options and thus called on Friday thinking it might be a bad idea as they're usually busy.. It was defintely hard for the person to hear a bit when they picked up. The staff did relay something about gluten free noodles.. Anyways, they said they could swap out any of the soy soups for salt (but soy can encompass a lot of things so I still wasn't feeling super confident but we're going to give it a go). We go and I asked which 4 of the soups I was eyeballing don't have soy - the staff said they can accomodate and replace any of the soy soups with a salt broth. After we ordered, the staff came back and checked in to make sure that my partner also didn't have an allergy. And my dish came out, they told me there was no egg as its marinated in soy - perfect to me. I'm glad that was caught as not every establishments can account for everything. - Now I have a spot to (more safely) eat ramen! - I advise that if you do have an food allergy, do talk to the staff, and address your concerns such as cross contamination etc. I had a great experience, but I do find that because its not so regulated or understood and there is lack of education amongst the food/resturant industry - you always need to advocate for yourself and there is always a risk. I'm very apperciative of the staff here.

Okonomoyaki tater tots - 8.5/10 from a potato lover!! This does have some sort of cheese on it so beware if you don't eat it Hamachi Hand Roll - 9/10 SO GOOD. I think the rice is mixed in with soy sauce. It was super flavorful which I wasn't expecting Scallop Hand Roll - 8/10, the yuzu on top was absolutely delicious & scallop was very soft. Kobe Skewer - 7/10, it was good but nothing extraordinary. It'll hit the spot if you like meat skewers Yuzu Tori Skewer - 7/10, same as the kobe skewer, but the yuzu on top was delicious Niku Ramen - 8/10, good portion & very very flavorful. I'm glad that they gave a lot of meat in this. I shared this & they provided an extra bowl without me asking :) It's also not super spicy. Hokkaido Milk Pudding - 8/10, the pudding itself was so good but the sauce was a little too sweet for me. However, my partner has a sweet tooth and loved it :) Will totally come again, everything was so yummy and so glad to have tried it!

The veggies were endless, making each last sip enjoyable. The place was bustling with workers, but the host seemed a bit brusque. She might need a little training in good manners. Instead of welcoming us, she opened the door for herself without holding it for us, which made us hold our own door. She just left our menu without saying anything and disappeared. She could have asked the next person, who happened to be sitting side by side at a two-person table, if they were free to share. They were already done watching a video together. We had to squeeze in and awkwardly say, "Excuse me," while getting an eye roll. The host could have avoided that awkward situation by letting us know we were using the table next to them. Also, be ready to pay an automatic 5%. Tips start at 20% and go up, so at least 25% is expected. The service was okay, but the food was fantastic. The workers seemed a bit lazy and avoided us until it was time to pay. That's when they suddenly became incredibly helpful. It's surprising how tipping changes their mood so quickly. I can tell because she watches me as I select my tip, and her eyes change.

Food 4/5: we ordered the pork katsu rice bento with mini creamy ramen and the Yu Ling chi chicken bento with the spicy miso mini ramen. Everything tasted fresh and hot. We particularly liked the pork katsu, it was perfectly crispy, juicy and well seasoned with the katsu sauce. The ramen didn't have much topping (just scallion and Naruto) but the soup and noodles texture were great. I was looking forward to the Yu Lin chi chicken but was not a big fan of the sauce flavor, it was salty and slightly one note. Rice was well cooked in the bento but I could do without the edamame, they weren't cooked long enough so it was hard to get out of the shell and bland. Service 3/5: we were seated pretty immediately but had to wait quite awhile before anyone served us, it might be because we were more towards the corner and the restaurant was busy. We had to get up to find a server to help us with checking out because no one ever came to check up on us. Ambiance 4/5: nice space, slightly cramped, but generally nice with the exposed brick walls and high ceiling. There's also outdoor seating available here.
