Wings and half of the crab special it's enough to share
    Jackie W.

I heard about this place on Facebook after the covid shut down began to lift. I was so excited to hear about a Soul Food restaurant in Tempe just a minute away from Tempe Marketplace. It's located in the Tempe Food Court along with a variety of other little restaurants. I love supporting small local businesses. I waited until seafood Saturday to go and I wasn't disappointed. I preordered my food the night before and was able to set my time for pick up. The staff responded promptly and professionally. Upon arrival to the pick up area just give them a call and they bring your food out to the pick up window. I ordered the peach Hennessy wings and the Seafood special. Both dishes were amazing flavorful and well seasoned and portion sizes were generous. I highly recommend them. I will be ordering again I've got my eye on the collard greens. I can't wait for when we can dine in.

Let me start by saying one word...DELICIOUS!!! I literally don't think there is any region of food Chef Lynn can't prepare! From Soulfood to Asian Fusion everything she prepares takes your tastebuds on a culinary experience. I have had her lamb chops, signature Mac and cheeses both seafood and jerk chicken and I refuse to make Mac and cheese anymore! Her signature peach Hennessy wings are a crowd pleaser and definite conversation starter. I can't wait to partner with her for future events. Chef Lynn will be my go to for any themed event or dinner party! Trust she has the culinary mind to execute any brunch, lunch, dinner, or fancy banquet. Outstanding job!

My friends and I were in Phoenix for a girls weekend and booked chef Lynn for a personal chef experience. I WISH SHE WAS LOCAL TO ME! I would literally book her for everything...even day to day meals. Her cooking is PERFECTION and her great personality makes it even better! Her food is made with love. She was on time, professional, and left the kitchen in better condition than she found it. Thanks again chef Lynn!!

Fried chicken, Mac n cheese, cornbread and yams. Delicious comfort food obviously prepared with soul.

I have been craving some really good soul food, so I ordered online and picked up. They were exactly on time for my order and the food was excellent. I ordered fried chicken that comes with cornbread. I also ordered yams and mac and cheese. The cornbread melted in my mouth and was heavenly. Mac and cheese was bursting with different cheese flavors, and cooked perfectly aldente. Yummy yams were also perfectly cooked and splendidly seasoned. The fried chicken was crispy on the outside, tender and moist on the inside. Although I like mine seasoned a bit more, I am not complaining. This place is a real cut above, and since this was my first time, I thought I would give big kudos to the chef and staff. Generous size portions, and easy on the wallet. I will most definitely order again, and I highly recommend this gem. They cater, so I will keep that in mind.

Went to hint of soul today and I will definitely be back again. Had to try it once I read on social media the owner was from my hometown Chicago. I ordered the smothered chicken, mac and cheese, yams, greens, cornbread and Chicago sweet heat wings. I had to sample several things on the menu. The food is seasoned just right. The food is fresh tasting and absolutely delicious. Hint of soul thank you for bringing that home cooked quality taste to AZ.

Shrimp feast, Peach Hennessy wings and Garlic Parmesan wings.
    Mary B.

Better than expected, ordered the shrimp feast, peach Hennessy wings and garlic parmesan wings. Wings still had a nice crunch, flavor was outstanding. More than enough to share with the shrimp feast, we ordered extra corn, potatoes and sausage. The snap of the sausage and flavor brought back memories. Will definitely keep this place on my list of favorites. Forgot to take a photo of before but as you can see we loved it.

This is my first and only experience with Kings. I ordered food at an event for a friend from…read moreKings based on what she saw others had ordered because it looks great. My friend and I waited and waited for the food. I opened the order when I got it before leaving the window and the lady working the window gave me someone else's food. Thankfully, and the other customer recognized their order and got their food just fine. The lady working the window apologized, gave me a water, and I waited longer. She apologized again and said that they'd bring the food to me. They didn't bring the food and instead gave part of my order to a different friend to bring to me. I went back and asked for the rest of the order. The lady working the window said that she gave me my order. I said no, we only got part of it. She then became unbelievably inappropriate saying that I'm lying, stealing from a Black man business owner, not well, and all kinds of things that were uncalled for because they were paid nearly $40 for the order plus a 20% tip! I told my friend what happened and to do a charge back. I went back again with the partial order to try and explain that this was all that was received. Instead, the woman working the window immediately started berating me, threatening to embarrass me, and other things that were incredibly unhelpful to reconcile the situation. Mind you, I am not the type to act a fool and was at the event representing an organization so at no time did I raise my voice or return the treatment I received from this business. She asked what I wanted her to do and I told her that a refund because I know how chargebacks are bad for small businesses. She said okay and asked for the last 4 digits of the card, so I had to get them from my friend. I went back to my friend to get the numbers, got back in line to give them to her, and I gave them to her. She asked why I kept getting back in line...well, how else was I supposedto get help because that line was the only line. Instead of refunding my friend, the lady shut the window, talked to the owner, and reopened the window and started taking more orders. I got back in line again to find out if the refund had been done and she said that they were not going to refund and there was nothing else that they could do. I told my friend this and she's going to move forward hopefully with the chargeback. Mind you if the order and had been fulfilled correctly, then I wouldn't have had to go back multiple times asking for the order nor would I be writing this negative review. Our other friends who actually got their orders said the food was good, so there's that I suppose. This type of exchange is why so many businesses fail. Simple things like decent service and order management. I was not the only person waiting for an extended period. I was not the only person whose order was messed up. I encourage this business to invest in an digital order taking CMS and not writing things in dark pen on the boxes themselves. If digital order taking isn't possible for now, and that's OK if it is, then invest in guest check server notepads. They are less than $10 on Amazon. The orders can be written on them with customers' names and phone numbers, the bottom can be torn off for customers to have while they are waiting for food, and, in order for a customer to receive their order, they must surrender the torn off portion. Doing something either electronically or handwritten like explained would provide a system for checks and balance instead of relying on someone's memory. Also, consider coaching, retraining, and/or replacing the woman that was working the window today as her behavior is bad for business. She was not able to or chose not to maintain composure, decorum, and handle the pressure of all of the customer traffic. Though I did not get loud, she did get loud with me and other customers saw this every time she did this. That affects business. Her choices and behavior today cost this business vending opportunities with me, my employer, the organization I was representing at today's event, and probably with other customers who saw her disrespect, treatment, and unkindness towards me.

I've eaten at Mrs. Whites for many years, and every time I want to go back to real southern cooking this is where I come to. Companion and I dropped in for lunch, and there was so much food that we skipped dinner. I ordered the Southern Fried Chicken. 3 pan fried pieces that are juicy and golden brown. For sides I had mixed greens with hot sauce and mac and cheese. The collards were tender and delicious and the mac and cheese didn't even come close fo K..... Dinner. It was loaded with cheese and truly memorable. It also came with a large piece of homemade cornbread with lots of butter on top. Companion ordered the child's plate which is 2 pieces of chicken and and 2 sides. Ordered were cole slaw and mac and cheese. Because we are both diabetics, we both ordered unsweetened tea, but I really wanted a glass of the sweet tea which you get all through the south. We had planned on getting the wonderful peach cobbler for dessert, but we were so full that it would have been impossible to get down. Other items on the menu are smothered pork chops, fried catfish, and chicken fried steak as well as a host of other items. The restaurant recently underwent a complete renovation and it is really nice inside. Lest I forget to mention it, This is a small place that has been here for as long as I can remember. I came to Phoenix in 1965 and have eaten there since then. Highly recommended. 4 stars

Popped in before a Suns game, an easy walk past Chase Field. It was good to get away from the usual pregame options. The place was clean and inviting, and had a little bit of a "back in time" feel without being dated. Quickly and pleasantly welcomed and seated. Then came the hard part, making choices. We had fried chicken and fried catfish, with sides of Mac and Cheese, macaroni salad (yep, Mac two ways), greens and mashed potatoes with gravy. All were great, obviously home made from longstanding recipes. Especially into the greens, which were bursting with flavor. The catfish was delish, and my wife called the fried chicken the best she ever had. Saved room for peach cobbler, which was served smoking hot. The perfect sweet end to the savory meal. Next time I'm all in on pork chops, which looked amazing. And we will come on a Sunday, the only day dressing is available as a side option. If you're looking for a meal that feels like a friend had you over for supper, go here! Thanks Mrs. White's family!

Not sure if they were the owners or not, but I appreciated the friendly service. The menu is robust with a late night weekend special menu (which includes oxtails til 2am) but I had a 1 track mind: CATFISH! The 3 pieces I got were large and automatically came with hush puppies (yum) and a side. The food was done is about 15 minutes but it didn't seem that long - the catfish was piping HOT! I was trying to eat it and cool it off at the same time, I made it all the way home and the food was still hot which I really appreciated. The catfish was crunchy/crispy on the outside and super flaky on the inside- perfect! Both my husband and 13 month old daughter wouldn't keep their hands out my platter! My husband liked Missy's catfish over the food truck that we used to always go to. I already started telling people about Missy's and we will definitely be back!

The space has a classy, mid-upscale vibe definitely giving "bougie" in the best way while still feeling comfortable and inviting. We visited on a Saturday, and the live music was phenomenal. The musicians played a great mix of current songs, which created an amazing atmosphere throughout the restaurant. The staff greeted us warmly and made us feel right at home. I also loved the thoughtful touch of offering personal handheld fans to guests if they got warm. The bar was another standout. I really appreciated that the cocktails are crafted using African or Black-owned liquors, making the drink menu feel unique and intentional. If you don't drink alcohol, they also have a wonderful selection of mocktails and natural teas, so there are plenty of options for everyone. The food took a little longer than expected to come out, but nothing unreasonable. The portions are generous, and the prices are fair for the quality and amount of food you receive. We ordered the oxtails, jollof rice, broccoli, peri-peri chicken, and pineapple chicken. Everything was delicious, especially the oxtails and jollof rice. My only recommendation is to be prepared if you're not a fan of spicy food the piri piri chicken definitely has some heat. Since they don't offer ranch or similar cooling sauces, just keep that in mind when ordering. Overall, Latha offers more than just great food it's a full experience.
