I heard about this place on Facebook after the covid shut down began to lift. I was so excited to hear about a Soul Food restaurant in Tempe just a minute away from Tempe Marketplace. It's located in the Tempe Food Court along with a variety of other little restaurants. I love supporting small local businesses. I waited until seafood Saturday to go and I wasn't disappointed. I preordered my food the night before and was able to set my time for pick up. The staff responded promptly and professionally. Upon arrival to the pick up area just give them a call and they bring your food out to the pick up window. I ordered the peach Hennessy wings and the Seafood special. Both dishes were amazing flavorful and well seasoned and portion sizes were generous. I highly recommend them. I will be ordering again I've got my eye on the collard greens. I can't wait for when we can dine in.

Her signature peach Hennessy wings are a crowd pleaser and definite conversation starter. I can't wait to partner with her for future events. I have been craving some really good soul food, so I ordered online and picked up. They were exactly on time for my order and the food was excellent. I ordered fried chicken that comes with cornbread. I also ordered yams and mac and cheese. The cornbread melted in my mouth and was heavenly. Mac and cheese was bursting with different cheese flavors, and cooked perfectly aldente. Yummy yams were also perfectly cooked and splendidly seasoned. The fried chicken was crispy on the outside, tender and moist on the inside. Although I like mine seasoned a bit more, I am not complaining. This place is a real cut above, and since this was my first time, I thought I would give big kudos to the chef and staff. Generous size portions, and easy on the wallet. I will most definitely order again, and I highly recommend this gem. They cater, so I will keep that in mind.

Went to hint of soul today and I will definitely be back again. Had to try it once I read on social media the owner was from my hometown Chicago. I ordered the smothered chicken, mac and cheese, yams, greens, cornbread and Chicago sweet heat wings. I had to sample several things on the menu. The food is seasoned just right. The food is fresh tasting and absolutely delicious. Hint of soul thank you for bringing that home cooked quality taste to AZ.

More than enough to share with the shrimp feast, we ordered extra corn, potatoes and sausage. The snap of the sausage and flavor brought back memories. I was searching for a soul food restaurant in Tempe and stumbled upon Hint of Soul online. I saw that they had peach Hennessy wings and I was immediately sold. I basically ordered one of everything for me and my family to try. The location was a little hard to find and the pick up system could use some work but the food made up for it. The food was spectacular, I ordered the kickin kajun alfredo and honestly wish I had more food, it was that good! Edit: Hi Lynn - Thank you for your feedback and invitation. I will look forward to trying your restaurant again when it reopens. I had tried your food about a month ago (maybe more) but hadn't gotten around to writing a review since then. I usually don't leave reviews unless I have a great experience or a really upsetting one. I really appreciate an owner that cares about and hears their customers and their concerns. Way more than just a hint of soul! I decided to try Hint of Soul after finding them here on Yelp! On our first visit, we ordered the Chicago Sweet Heat wings, Lemon Pepper wings, Garlic Parm wings, the Kickin' Kajun Chicken Alfredo, Granny's Collards, the 7 Cheese Baked Mac and Cheese, and the Crown Royal Peach Cobbler. This is the spot to go to!!!! The staff is friendly and food is amazing!! Greens are so good reminds me of my granny's and the Mac and cheese is soooo good. I can't even tell you the level of customer service here. We ordered on grubhub, and for some reason we never received our food. We got a call from the restaurant stating what happened and that they would be glad to replace the order. We told them it was okay and that we would contact grub hub to rectify the situation because it was at their end. We never replaced the order, but they were kind enough to do it anyway and they did it for free. The food was also super yummy. My kids a picky eater, and still ate everything we got her! Tried today because saw on FB and I always support black owned. We got ( me and my visiting cousin) Hennessy winds and garlic Parmesan, also collards, amd cornbread, baked mac. Tried this place after looking online for soul food in Tempe and it was amazing. The cornbread is really the star of the show and I definitely recommend getting multiple with your order (wish they sold pans of it) its wonderfully soft and crumbly and extremely flavorful. We ordered the fried chicken, both smothered and fried, and they were both delicious. We also ordered the mac and cheese and the collards which were both good and I would definitely order the collards again as they a delight. Make sure to call when picking up as the restaurant is not on the iPad just yet for the food court. There was also a small issue with missing sides but it was easily remedied with a phone call. Overall I would definitely eat here again and look forward to trying the delicious looking wings and yams as well as another bite of that cornbread (heavenly!) read more

Maurisha provided a catered dinner for my husband's birthday. The food was absolutely amazing. She provided stuffed salmon with crab, shrimp, bacon and cheese, chicken stuffed with mozzarella and spinach, greens, spinach, Mac n cheese, garlic mashed potatoes and my husband's favorite peach Hennessy cobbler. I'm sorry but the food is terrible It could of been a lot better. First of all my order was incomplete I ask for chicken and gravy got the chicken but no gravy then the chicken was so rubbery I couldn't chew it and had a taste like feathers. Didn't receive the extra corn bread and portions were small. This place wasn't worth the dive to get there and the $35.00 spend I want a refund. Not a happy customer!!!! read more

My wife and I were really hungry for some fresh seafood. Hard to satisfy during these difficult times. We found some great reviews about this place and decided to give it a shot. It was Saturday so we ordered the food of the day. We ordered a shrimp and crab seafood boil as our first sample from this restaurant. We ordered on their website and it was easy. Went to their location and found they were in a large shared facility. Tip: check in with the person on duty or contact the individual place by phone or on the wall mounted iPad. They'll deliver it to you in the lobby.. Bottom line: it was terrific, quality ingredients cooked just right and spiced to perfection. You gotta give them some support, they deserve it. read more

I got in on their grand opening in Tempe this week and the food far exceeded my expectations. The wings were crispy perfection, and the gravy on the smothered chicken was so so flavorful. And that mac and cheese, BOMB! I also got the cajun seafood pasta, but couldn't eat it cuz I was too full. The portions are not skimpy. My daughter polished it off, though and reports that it was very good. A little on the pricey side, but worth every penny!! read more

She then became unbelievably inappropriate saying that I'm lying, stealing from a Black man business owner, not well, and all kinds of things that were uncalled for because they were paid nearly $40 for the order plus a 20% tip! I told my friend what happened and to do a charge back. I went back again with the partial order to try and explain that this was all that was received. Instead, the woman working the window immediately started berating me, threatening to embarrass me, and other things that were incredibly unhelpful to reconcile the situation. Mind you, I am not the type to act a fool and was at the event representing an organization so at no time did I raise my voice or return the treatment I received from this business. She asked what I wanted her to do and I told her that a refund because I know how chargebacks are bad for small businesses. She said okay and asked for the last 4 digits of the card, so I had to get them from my friend. I went back to my friend to get the numbers, got back in line to give them to her, and I gave them to her. She asked why I kept getting back in line...well, how else was I supposedto get help because that line was the only line. Instead of refunding my friend, the lady shut the window, talked to the owner, and reopened the window and started taking more orders. I got back in line again to find out if the refund had been done and she said that they were not going to refund and there was nothing else that they could do. I told my friend this and she's going to move forward hopefully with the chargeback. Mind you if the order and had been fulfilled correctly, then I wouldn't have had to go back multiple times asking for the order nor would I be writing this negative review. Our other friends who actually got their orders said the food was good, so there's that I suppose. This type of exchange is why so many businesses fail. Simple things like decent service and order management. I was not the only person waiting for an extended period. I was not the only person whose order was messed up. I encourage this business to invest in an digital order taking CMS and not writing things in dark pen on the boxes themselves. If digital order taking isn't possible for now, and that's OK if it is, then invest in guest check server notepads. They are less than $10 on Amazon. The orders can be written on them with customers' names and phone numbers, the bottom can be torn off for customers to have while they are waiting for food, and, in order for a customer to receive their order, they must surrender the torn off portion. Doing something either electronically or handwritten like explained would provide a system for checks and balance instead of relying on someone's memory. Also, consider coaching, retraining, and/or replacing the woman that was working the window today as her behavior is bad for business. She was not able to or chose not to maintain composure, decorum, and handle the pressure of all of the customer traffic. Though I did not get loud, she did get loud with me and other customers saw this every time she did this. That affects business. Her choices and behavior today cost this business vending opportunities with me, my employer, the organization I was representing at today's event, and probably with other customers who saw her disrespect, treatment, and unkindness towards me.

We didn't need a reservation when we went, but I'd probably recommend one if you're coming with a party of four or more. We were seated at the bar and ordered a four dishes from different categories, which was a great way to sample the menu - though I think we probabaly could have gotten away with just 3 dishes for a party of 2. We tried Yam Mamuang Boran (old-style green mango salad), Boo Pad Pong Garee (crab curry with ginger), Tom Yum Haeng Sen Yai (dry tom yum with wide noodles), and Naem Khao Tot (crispy rice salad with fermented pork sausage). The noodles and salad were defintitely my favorite though eerything was incredibly flavorful and seasoned really well. What I loved most was how thoughtfully prepared everything felt. The hibiscus one was soooooo intensely sour that it was almost inedible. It was very bright though. The lemongrass one reminded me too much of a savory lemongrass soup that I couldn't enjoy it. Some of the spiel and verbiage that the team had was a little pretentious and awkward. I saw them "kindly" kicking out a table for sitting past their reservation time. I've never ever seen a restaurant do that before. Really not that bad but really not worth the $20-$40 price tags either. I'm open to coming back and trying other dishes. I really think I may have came on a bad night.
