We got married on one of the hottest days of the summer so far (95 degrees) and Hippie Chick Bakery made arrangements with our venue to deliver our cakes at the last possible moment to help preserve them and prevent them from melting! My husband and I went to Hippie Chick Bakery for a tasting for our wedding cake. We needed a vegan cake, and there were so many options for this! We also love that they tend to go towards local and organic ingredients as much as possible. This made them our first choice. We ultimately decided on the entire cake being vanilla with strawberry filling. We decided to have henna designs piped on. When we needed to change the color scheme, it was a breeze. Amy did exactly what we discussed in person, but it was more beautiful than imagined on the day of our wedding. The cake also tasted better than at the cake tasting! So many guests loved it, and all the vegan guests were happy to be able to have cake. We had extra cake that we were able to share with friends and neighbors for a few days afterwards. I loved my wedding cake from hippie chick bakery! I got a 3 tier cake with two flavors. Strawberry lemonade cake with vanilla frosting with strawberries pieces. The second layer was the double chocolate chunk with vanilla chai frosting. Both cake flavors were so delicious! My cake arrived on site on time without any difficulty. I had a dear friend who was terminally ill with cancer and his dying wish was to marry the love of his life before he passed. I first discovered Hippie Chick when searching for a vegan wedding cake about 2 years ago. We were looking for something unique and affordable and I'm so glad I stumbled across their website. We popped in for a tasting and wanted to ask for seconds! Our final choice for our wedding cake was red velvet with strawberry filling, along with black fondant. The end result turned out beautiful and so delicious. The cake was delivered to our venue on time with no issues whatsoever. I received tons of compliments on the choice of cake at the reception, and luckily had enough to freeze and enjoy for a week after. Amy is easy to work with and super helpful with making everything affordable, especially for a couple of grad students planning their own wedding. Last year on our 1st anniversary we got a mini cake just like our wedding cake and enjoyed it once again. This year we decided to try another flavor, one of her signature combinations in lemon and raspberry with bits of raspberry in the icing. Delicious! For special occasion cakes the cake is always moist and the icing is the perfect in between of sweet without landing you into a sugar coma! It can be hard to find a good vegan cake, and Amy's are perfect. Definitely look for Hippie Chick Bakery on Facebook and check out her website for examples of the cake creations she's made. Terribly talented artistically. Amy is located in Kensington, which can be a bit of a trek for us in Dover. But it is well worth the drive. Her house and front yard are beautiful with tons of flowers and chickens roaming the backyard. For those who like to know where their eggs come from, you can see her happy hens in the backyard and she might have eggs for sale when you pick up your cake. Three main attractions led us to choose this bakery for our wedding cake: 1) excellent taste-to-price ratio (2) ability to design our own cake from scratch and (3) we didn't end up going this route, but you CAN get a Vegan cake, which is pretty cool. I was married this past July, and I knew from day 1 who I wanted to make my wedding cake, and this was the place. I had tasted her cake at the Boston Veg Fest, my sister had her wedding cake made by Amy in 2004, and she has also gotten a birthday cake from Amy/Hippie Chick Bakery. I had never ever ever had a bad experience with Hippie Chick. So, my then husband to be and I set our appointment for our tasting in Oct. 2006 (you still went to the Bakery in Amesbury at that point). We sampled, we discussed design (we had found a gorgeous mehndi design on cake in a magazine, that we wanted similarly done on our own cake), we picked the size, the shape.... and, not to worry, laid back Amy said that if anything changed, to call her and we'd work it out. Fast forward to May or June 2007.... we realize that the doing red henna/mehndi on our cake will clash with the color scheme at our wedding. I contact Amy, and we decide that brown (the color of henna when applied) will work and still look nice, and we'd put our shocking pink roses on the top. During our phone conversation, she asked if I was online, and if I could look at her galleries, because she had a cake that had a brown design on it, but the cake was turquoise (I had told her that we were going to have turquoise decor that evening, thus the change from red henna/icing). I went to her website, and she directed me to that one cake. And, me thinking we're still talking about just the brown and that particular shade of brown, I said "yes, like that". So, thinking we're all straightened out, we move on. Come my wedding day, my father tells me, 1hr & a half or so before the reception that he saw my cake, it was there, and it's "blue". What? Well, as you can probably imagine, she copied the design from the cake she'd shown me on the website. Clearly, somehow, we got VERY mixed up., as when I said "yes like that" she interrupted the WHOLE design. I must say, a huge change from the original. I was so upset and so stressed out that I just..... cried. I can usually handle most things, but on that day, and, having known for soooo long what we both wanted for our cake (and at times, to be so stressed out in the planning stages to even quip "I may not know anything else, but at least I have my cake") Ugh. I just lost it. It's a good thing I found out then, and not when we walked in to the room. My cousin's wife had snuck in and taken a photo of it on her digital camera, and showed me. Honestly, I hate(d) it. It was so far from what we had originally discussed. It was one of the few details my husband cared about and had a lot of input on. I had to break the news to my husband before going into the room. We both weren't happy, but we faked it. We received a lot of compliments from guests, and said thank you to most and moved on (close family knew it wasn't right). The cake, itself, of course, was delicious (well, all he & I got were the bites we fed each other -- but it was tasty -- as I expected it to be). After the wedding, and things calmed down, maybe a week later. I emailed Amy to find out what the heck happened. Maybe I should've just let it go, I don't know. But it was eating at me. She was SO apologetic, and asked, what, if anything, she could do. The answer, really, is nothing. You can't go back and make it right for the wedding day. So... where do I stand on Hippie Chick, ha. Well, I still think Amy makes great stuff, and does a fantastic job. Am I disappointed? Hell yes. It wasn't what we wanted. I don't plan on getting married ever again, so nothing I would ever potentially get from her again would hold the weight that that cake did..... but, I would consider ordering something from her again. I know it was an unintentional error, and clearly something was missed in the communication over the phone. I'm disappointed in myself for not going over it ALL again with her, and likewise with her (which she said to me, she regrets not going over the whole order again with me). Such is life. read more

After being turned away by many bakeries in my area it was amazing to have someone be so accommodating for my mother's allergies. She was ready on time and the cake was beautiful two layers of chocolate cake with vanilla frosting topped with organic berries. It was egg free gluten free and soy free and just to die for. We were looking for a vegan wedding cake and Amy was the only person we met with and I'm glad we chose her to make our cake. Our cake was beautiful and she delivered it to our venue, which was about 1 1/2 hours from her bakery. We choose a 3 tiered vanilla bean cake with chocolate frosting with the whole cake being white with little purple and green flowers. We also got a back up sheet cake also. It was so delicious. I found Hippie Chick online when searching for a vegan gluten-free wedding cake that could be delivered to a venue in southeastern Mass. I scheduled a tasting visit when I was back east doing some wedding planning. Since I eat a vegan gluten-free (and mostly sugar free) diet these types of baked goods are an infrequent treat and the samples were delicious. I decided on a marble cake because it was light and, I thought, would appeal to lots of our guests. Also decided on a mocha filling with vanilla frosting. I brought the leftover samples to my parents' house and they were surprised at how good a vegan gluten-free cake can be. Amy drew up some sketches of possible designs in keeping with the nautical theme of our wedding. I gave her a deposit feeling confident that we would have a great wedding cake that I could enjoy and that would be enjoyed by many, if not all, of our guests. A couple of months before the wedding I made many attempts to contact Amy to make some final decisions about the design and the cake topper we had bought. She hardly ever answers the phone and is not good about returning calls. She is also not very responsive to emails, so it was frustrating trying to get in touch with her. But I finally did. I sent her the cake topper after agreeing with her idea about how to secure it on the cake. She assured me the cake, with the cake topper on it, would be delivered between 3:30 - 4:30 when the caterer was setting up. Our ceremony was scheduled to start at 5:00 with cocktails in the room starting at 5:30. What I found out the next day is that the cake wasn't delivered until well after the ceremony started but that there had been phone contact with my coordinator that it was on the way. The reason I think this is relevant is because I believe the late delivery was related to the fact that the cake was not what I ordered. Amy will say it was a traffic issue (if she posts a rebuttal), but I don't believe her. Though the cake was designed the way we'd agreed and it looked lovely, it was absolutely not a marble cake. It was a very dense consistency and had a very dark chocolate layer with another beige colored layer. It was not a vanilla/chocolate marble swirl and was nothing like what I had tasted a year before. During the reception, one of our guests told me (before I had tasted it) that it was brave of me to have a wedding cakes with nuts in it. I wondered what she was talking about! My Mother told me she took one bite and thought it was some sort of fruit cake - that's how heavy it was. What was the "stuff" in it? My husband also took one bite and went to the caterer's dessert table. It was a disaster. The top layer was given to us as we left the reception, and it was the next day that I realized this was not the cake I ordered. The design and the cake topper were correct, but the cake itself was awful. I was SO disappointed. I had been so looking forward to this cake. I didn't even care about the $550 I'd spent, I had just wanted the cake I ordered. I contacted Amy but she insisted that it was a marble cake and wouldn't discuss it any further. She has also ignored follow up emails. So my only recourse is to let people know. Most of my yelp reviews are very positive because I prefer to share positive feedback. But this was such a bad experience that I feel compelled to post this negative review. There are a lot of positive reviews for this business and it was, in large part, the positive reviews that got me to schedule a tasting in the first place. I can say safely that its the best wedding cake *I've* had. Amy was super nice at our consultation at her home and we were also greeted by her chickens :) She's very easy to work with and gave us lots of ideas and options to work with. I sent some pictures to Amy since I live in Pennsylvania and she sent me a few sketches of ideas for the cake. One of them basically came right out of my head and was exactly what I had been envisioning. I then picked the flavor without tasting anything, which was a purple velvet cake with vanilla frosting. Not only did Amy DRIVE this cake 7 hours to my wedding, it was simply AWESOME... my guests RAVED about it and most of them had no clue that the baker was a guest at the wedding. I just got married a little over a month ago and definitely wanted to leave a review for Hippie Chick Bakery! I spent hours and hours researching bakeries in the New England area to find a place that would make the cake my husband I wanted for around $300 or less. Not one place could do it, I wanted a three tier, topsy turvy cake for 20-35 people. I didn't think that was a lot to ask for. Every bakery either had a 45 person minimum or said it would have to be a two tier for that few of people or didn't do the topsy turvy design or were just way too expensive. My husband and I were becoming very frustrated and were finally deciding on which part of our cake to compromise on when I stumbled across The Hippie Chick Bakery. I contacted Amy and our lives were made easy! She could do the design we wanted, for the number of people we wanted and her prices were extremely affordable!!! I booked her immediately and we went to a cake tasting. My husband is lactose intolerant and so we had to have at least one of the tiers vegan which was no problem. The cakes we tasted were amazing plus we could have a three tier cake for 25 guests for a little over $200 way below our budget! We decided to go for the next size larger which was a little over $300 (still within our range) and that way we could keep the top layer for our one year anniversary. I also have to mention working with Amy. She is a totally awesome person! I didn't feel like she was out to convince me to spend as much money as possible as a lot of vendors I dealt with in the wedding industry are. She is laid back but very competent which made me feel relaxed. She is very easy to work with and any issue that arose was quickly solved by her. We opted to pick the cake up yourselves and had no trouble transporting it to our reception site. The cake turned out to be beautiful and tasted delicious! I think I had pretty high expectations because I absolutely love cake and was really looking forward to my wedding cake. Amy exceeded my expectations when I saw the cake for the first time. It was absolutely beautiful. I could not have asked for anything better. And for the size (five tiers) and the quality, I think the price was more than reasonable. They were adorable and honestly when they were picked up from her shop (house) they couldn't have been nicer people. Unfortunately, this rating is for the food. The cupcakes were so dense, you couldn't even cut through with a fork. Dry and crumbly vanilla had little flavor and then the icing fell off in one big chunk. Buttercream frosting. I found Hippie Chick while searching for a bakery that could make gluten free pies for Thanksgiving. I have celiac disease, and wanted to be able to serve pies that everyone could enjoy. We ordered both the Chocolate Cream Pie and the Apple Crisp for a large family dinner, and both desserts were so delicious! As a celiac, I was able to safely enjoy the desserts, and the non-celiacs could not tell the difference :) Amy was incredibly easy to work with, and confirmed my order via phone and email to ensure it would be ready prior to Thanksgiving. My Husband bought my favorite devils food with vanilla butter cream frosting birthday cake here and it was so lovely to look at. We cut into the cake and I took an extra big piece, because I LOVE butter cream frosting and this is the one time of year I indulge with total abandon. The cake itself was a pale tan color and I think it was carob not chocolate and certainly not devils food. The frosting tasted like butter, not butter cream frosting, butter.
