All good things come to an end? My previous review was 5 stars. My mother-in-law told me that the food had really taken a dive when I said I wanted to go there for dinner. We went elsewhere for a hot minute and finally I convinced her that the least we could do, after so much amazing food, was give it a second chance. I was hopeful to prove her wrong. With great sadness I am now posting my current review. The Burke Mountain Roll, which was a fave, is not just meh. The tuna sashimi came in what can best be described as slabs (the pieces were huge). It was stringy and slimy. The tempura was ok, the edamame and other dishes were ok... When we were asked if we wanted to wrap the rest to take it home we all quickly answered no thanks! It was so bad that I asked if it was a new owner. I was told that it wasn't. So my question is this... did they lose a chef? Is the owner away? New suppliers? They just don't care anymore? I have no idea but when sushi at the mall is better... that really shakes you. I'd recommend waiting awhile until they get their act together... as it is now this isn't a good place to go for sushi, sorry. read more

This is a Korean style Japanese restaurant in a residential neighbourhood. It's a great place for good value lunch and dinner boxes. Sashimi comes in large chunks so don't expect the knifemanship (not sure if that's even a word!) of a Japanese sushi house. The atmosphere was amazing, there was a kid who pissed on me and he threw up his salmon smelling milk on me. The service was astonishing, the server gave me the menu but instead of keeping it on the table, he smacked it in my face and it left a mark. The server then said to kill myself just because I was 3'7 inches tall. The food was amazing. It tasted just how I liked it, garbage can juice sprinkled with jumbo maggots. The sauce was amazing too because it tasted just like my mothers famous house sauce, mixed up soil with worms. Last but not least, the dessert was fantastic. The green tea ice cream tasted just like green tea, except it was the type of green tea u grab from the bottom of the compost bin. Great sushi place! The staff are always super friendly and polite in person and on the phone. I've come here a few times now and everything i've ordered has always been really fresh and delicious, well made, good quality all around. The menu has a ton of options and some great veggie rolls (the victoria roll is awesome!) - the only issue is that most things are a bit on the expensive side, but the sushi is good quality so I can't really complain too much. The service is usually great, both dine-in and take-out orders have always come out of the kitchen quickly and it's never too busy. I'd definitely recommend this restaurant! read more

Been here a few times over the years. Always seems packed when I go. Food is pretty good, and service as well. Definitely try the specialty rolls out, and also the karrage. If you just want your basic Cali/dynamite rolls it is fairly similar to any other sushi place, very standard. Miso soup has a ton of green onions in it which adds to the flavour. My first visit to the restaurant turned out to be a time when it was empty. I went with a friend of mine, and with literally every seat available they put us at a small two-person table. This didn't exactly give me a good impression if we can't even get a normal size four-person table. Forgiving that, they give us menus. The first thing I noticed was that the prices ranged from quite cheap to quite expensive for sushi. I also took issue with the fact that says she mean really what is sushi and give me the impression that it would be more than just one piece.I had to ask the waitress a few times for clarification because it seemed quite unclear in the way it was laid out. We each ordered one drink. Even given the fact that we were the only people in the restaurant, the waiter still managed to mix up our drinks. This amazed me. Despite the issues ordering, I did find that the sushi was quite good quality and tasty. I had the Victoria roll which I would recommend. It is around $6 but comes with salmon and avocado topped with tempura. Never seen it before but I'd recommend it. My last issue was with the receipt. Even though this was a restaurant, the receipt was clearly from a dry cleaning business. On the back of the receipt it detailed garment damage liability just like you would see at a dry cleaner. I have no idea why this was the case, but I can only hope that this is not a dry cleaner's second attempt at running a business. I've never seen it before even at the smallest of small restaurants. Parking is pretty easy and the location is convenient. I actually do like the restaurant on the surface (location, cleanliness, selection, quality). Our party of 5 visited Hiraku Sushi on the evening of Friday the 13th, perhaps unlucky! Only 2 other couples in this restaurant at that time, not exactly crowded then, Ordered the simplest meal possible, three Boston Rolls and two Salmon Teriyaki. They couldn't even bring these dishes at the same time, the Boston Rolls had almost been eaten before we got our Salmon Teriyaki. Obligated to pay 15% tip for very crappy service, will not be going to that restaurant again. Placed my order online and said it would be done in half hour. Sent my father who returned half hour later with no food. Apparently their system was down. Go down myself and yes we have the order but we haven't started it yet. Ok call me when its done. Another hour goes by and I finally get my mother's MOTHER's DAY DINNER. We had to come back three times and no discount was even offered. All the "hot food" was cold when we got it. The udon had soaked up all the soup and was a soggy mess. All the tempura soggy as well. This is not what I would have wanted to serve my mom for Mother's Day! If my food was done why did they let it sit! We will not be ordering from this place again. read more

Since moving to the area, this is the only sushi place I like to go to. They have black rice, which is a huge bonus for me. They also always have amazing fresh fish. The owners are very sweet and always offer you a warm greeting. The decor is also very cute. read more

Food is definitely not bad here. One of the major problems I've had are their services. The first time we went, we waited an hour for our food. I tried to be understanding about it because it was their grand opening week, but whenever we get take outs, they screw up our orders like 50% of the time. There are always something missing. The first take time we got take out for 4, my bf had to go back 3x cause they kept messing up. Just recently, we went back to the restaurant to have dinner, they pretty much sat us down then ignored us and ended up serving a table after us. We waited for 20 mins, even called them over and they just nodded and never came to us. So we just got up and left. We now stick to ordering take out, but we always need to double check to make sure all our food are there before take off. read more

Been once so far. Reasonably priced sushi. We tried the Victoria Roll. I'll recommend it as it's unique and was delicious. I had the chicken udon and it has a nice flavour. My mom ordered the chicken teriyaki and found it a tasty but a little burnt, the rice served with it was too little (only about half the rice bowl). DO NOT COME HERE! If there is an option to give no star. This would be what this restaurant deserves. Truth is the foods are ok. Service are the worst. One particular older lady works here in her 50's My wife have been coming here and the last time we came she was rude to every customer. She gives them attitudes. I just told my wife to keep an open mind she might be just having a bad day. The second time we came back we notice she consistently down talking the customers and telling the customers that "There isn't anything wrong with this dish, you are what's wrong" when my wife and I heard this. We are shocked the owner is standing there and yet allowed her to do so without saying a word. I told my wife we are gonna stop coming here because the foods are made in a really dirty environment and get bad mouth to when we are there to eat. Now the 3rd time we went back. She gave us incorrect change. I confronted her "Hi this is not the right amount" she just said "oh ok so? That is the right amount." I said no and attempt to show her with a calculator what is the right amount then she said "No you don't have to show me I don't want to know." Then attempted to give me the right amount of change. After that SHE STILL DIDN'T GIVE ME THE RIGHT AMOUNT -haha But after this time. Hiraku is the only sushi joint in Burke mountain so far. Because of this it draws a lot of people there. When I first went there I had a couple rolls and the wet rice. The rolls were tasty while the wet rice was something to not be desired. The price is your average sushi joint. 7 to 11 bucks per roll and you got your typical sashimi, cooked foods etc. I wouldn't say anything is specifically amazing. It's a decent joint but for me...I'd rather drive a few blocks down coast and hit up other sushi places. read more

Not impressed at all. So many people say its good but they must be easily impressed because its so close to their home. Sushi is art and when you charge as much as Hiraku charges then you need to deliver. The rolls fell apart, they mistook my orders a few times and some of the ingredients were not fresh. We've been here many times. It's a good Japanese restaurant. The place is often busy especially at night. The food quality is above average especially the kid's meal is a great value for a hungry kid. They even offer a few selections for kid's menu. Our favorite sushi is their Toro sushi. Sometimes when you order toro at other Japanese restaurants, they serve you tuna. At Hiraku, most of the time, their toro sushi is good. And once in a while, you get top grade toro sushi that just melt in your mouth. read more

HORRIBLE SERVICE!!! We went with a married couple and two babies, and since we'd studied their menu ahead online, we pretty much ordered as we all sat down. They were at full capacity that evening and I could understand how busy their kitchen was at that time. The table next to us came in a lot later but had their first dish arrive even quicker than ours - it took a full hour for our food to come. When we were 90% done with our dishes, the waitress put down the bill on our table and said we could enjoy our sake with absolutely no rush and just pay whenever we're ready. 15 minutes later, she came back and replaced the original bill on the table with a new one, pointing out that the new bill had been adjusted to reflect the added 15% gratuity - SERIOUSLY?! My friend's two babies didn't even use a single napkin in your restaurant! Hiraku Sushi - We have no problem tipping you 15 or even 20% IF your service was properly delivered, and fine if you had to purposely amend the bill to add gratuity as a "mandatory" service charge for what you considered large party (6+ people), then why we were only served 4 but not 6 teas? Food was medicore, but with this level of service and respect to your customers, I would NOT RECOMMEND this place to anyone. read more

My husband and I were excited that a sushi place would be opening a block from our house, but also quite nervous that it would be terrible. Honestly, we have been nothing but impressed with the taste and quality of the food. They def had some kinks to work out when they first opened, but I think they are on a roll now. We go and have a beer while we wait for a to go order, or we eat in. We are always happy with the service as well. Some things are a little higher priced than other sushi places close by, but I will say we have never questioned the quality of the seafood or anything else! So it is worth it. read more
