The very first time I ordered their sushi I was surprised at how small they were. Then I fell in love with the bite sized sushi and how simple and fresh it always is. I can actually finish a roll here because the size is kid friendly. I usually order my boyfriend the teriyaki beef and chicken, their lo mein and fried rice which is good. Everything I've had on the menu was good except for the crazy amount of bell peppers and onions that was in the Mongolian steak. The quality and customer service goes hand and hand here. They've never messed up my order and they always have it hot and ready quickly. This is a place you call and do takeout at, the only people inside are the staff and customers waiting on orders. So don't be surprised at half of the chairs being put up on the tables.

After getting sorted we spoke to the hostess and then were shortly seated. The waiter came and took our drink orders right away. We got 2 cokes and a Whiskey Sour with Japanese Whiskey. After waiting about 15 min the waiter came back to take our food order, however we still had not gotten our drinks. We asked and said they were coming swiftly. Finally after 10 minutes later our drink orders came in. The cokes were flat but the Whiskey Sour was really good. I can't remember the waiters name but honestly she came by maybe 4 times the whole night and did not have the best attitude. The best thing about Ukiyo hands down was the food. Everything from the Ramen to the wagyu bao buns, just Wow. The wagyu was so crispy and just melted in your mouth. The ramen had amazing flavor profiles and was perfectly spiced. We also ordered the Chicken Karaage and this was so tender with the citrus mayo. This was also pretty big so were easily filled with all these dishes. The food and cocktails were amazing but the service really did disappoint from the delays and infrequent interactions.

I'll prefer to think he's just not a top flight sushi chef, as opposed to a malevolent one. But most of the pieces were good-to-excellent and the service was friendly and nice up to that point. Hirano's was a great find! The food was affordable, came out incredibly fast, and everything we tried was fresh and flavorful. It's hard to beat the combination of good food, quick service, and reasonable prices. We really enjoyed our meal and will definitely be back when we're looking for a quick, tasty lunch or dinner. Obviously you don't have to be Japanese to run a Japanese restaurant, but at least do the bare minimum of service that is uniquely Japanese. It's as if they just went to Ross and found anything Asian inspired (not specifically Japanese) and purchased it. FOOD 3/5: it wasn't anything to write home about. The "angry dragon" roll was interesting because they used pink tofu skin, which i thought was unique. Flavorwise, not as spicy as the name insinuates. I did appreciate the water tasted smooth and not like faucet water. COST 2/5: obviously, prices are high everywhere now and on top of that this is a sushi restaurant. We paid $80 something inc tip for miso soup, 3 rolls and 1 grilled squid. I definitely feel it is a little pricey and I'm not willing to pay $40/person when the food is mid and service is subpar. Overall, I'd give this place a 2/5. There were a couple of enjoyable food items, but the lack of basic hospitality, scattered ambiance, awkward timing of dishes, and higher price point made the experience feel underwhelming. For about $40 per person, I expected more than mid-tier food and subpar service.
