This is the ideal spot for quality lattes, fantastic food and cocktails. My partner and I ordered the ube latte, espresso martini, and niloko moco. The ube latte was perfect. The ube flavor was not overpowered by the espresso. This is honestly the best ube latte I've had in DC. My partner's espresso martini was also amazing; the alcohol was balanced so well and the coffee wasn't bitter at all. It was also a little sweet but not overly sweet like many other espresso martinis I've had elsewhere. Highly recommend if you need a pick-me-up. Now for the food, the moco was delicious as well. The dish has the perfect amount of gravy which is required for a great moco. The beef was cooked perfectly and the dish was topped with crispy onions which added a nice textural element. The service here is also good although you will need to bus your own dirty plates and serve your own water. But, that's expected at a coffee shop, so not a problem. The ambiance is hip and casual. Hiraya - Washington DC We arrived right when they opened on a weekday morning. Good news, we didn't have to wait for a seat. Even better news, the service was awesome, and the food was delicious. You know you're at a legit Filipino restaurant when the silverware is both a fork and a spoon. I read the reviews and one of the items that people raved about is their OG CheezBurger. I didn't get this. I was craving more of a traditional Filipino Breakfast. So, I got the Longganisa Breakfast, which comes with 4 large pieces of Longanisa, about two servings of their heirloom garlic fried rice, and an egg. Of course, I had them add 2 more eggs. My meal was delicious, and it was made to perfection. The Longganisa Breakfast didn't only look the part, but it tasted as good as pops used to make it. 5++ Stars for the Longganisa Plate. My wife got the Ricotta Calamansi Toast and one of their beautiful lattes. She loved both. I also loved the food and can't wait to come back. Maybe next time I'll opt for the OG CheezBurger. I came back to try the pandan and the Ube coffee, and neither of them had sufficient flavor at all. Coffee flavor was fine but i was really struggling to taste the syrup flavor again. The service was okay although there were a lot of people, and there were no servers it seems. I was really excited to try D.C.'s new Filipino cafe, Hiraya. The space is beautiful and cozy, and I like how the kitchen is open so you can see the chefs cooking. I ordered the Tocino Breakfast Bowl with Heirloom Garlic Fried Rice, Sunny Side Up Egg, and Atsara. I also got the Makulay Latte. Nice flavors all around, and I can't wait to bring my son here. The service was particularly outstanding. I asked for a certain design on my Makulay latte but got something different than what I requested. I told them it was okay but, while I was eating, one of the baristas brought out another latte with the design I wanted at no cost. Now that's going above and beyond! Great food, but definitely on the pricier side. I ordered a Tocino rice bowl and an iced pandan latte. The pork belly was very good - super well-seasoned and I think there was a pretty generous portion of it. I do wish there was more atsara to cut through the fattiness though! I'm also not a huge fan of heirloom rice and I wish that they offered it as an optional upgrade because I think I would have enjoyed it more with white rice. The iced pandan latte had a strong pandan flavor which I liked, but it could be a bit sweeter in my opinion. Personally, I think the prices are high for what you get, especially with the added 22% service charge (which seems like is added to your check even if you get takeout). I was interested in trying the black truffle ensaymada but was definitely not paying almost $14 for a small pastry. We live in MS and came to Alexandria for a vacation between Christmas and New Years. I've been following Hiraya on IG since they first opened and the Chori burger was on the cover of Food & Wine magazine. Hiraya was on the list of spots to visit and it absolutely lived up to the hype! I'm used to traditional Filipino food on the West Coast and mom & pop shops. So this was a bougie Filipino restaurant for me. The decor was casual and tropical. I loved the little details like the barrel man on the display cases and the carabao bench seat by the entrance. We ordered at the counter, sat ourselves and they brought the food to us within 10 mins. We ordered: the pork belly bowl, chori burger and it came with camote fries (Filipino sweet potatoes), Ube latte, makulay latte and a black truffle ensaymada. Everything was spectacular. Our favorite thing was the black truffle ensaymada, we even ordered 2 to go to eat later. The ensaymada is like a croissant muffin with a sugar glaze filled with black truffle butter cream topped with shaved, creamy cheddar cheese. It's a perfect blend of salty & sweet. The total for all the food was around $120, including tip. It was well worth the trip. They said they are working on doing dinner upstairs so I can't wait to return for that. read more

From looking into reserving a seat, this restaurant was a waving red flag. If you don't show up on your reservation, there's apparently a $100 fee. I feel like for a fairly new business, this seemed unwelcoming. Not very "mabuhay" of them. Though, they do take walk-ins, but that was because we went on a rainy Wednesday. Menu was confusing to understand. It seemed simple, but we had to ask again how to order the food due to the confusing layout. The food was meh. My friends and I called this restaurant "Filipino with a twist." Too many twists here and there. Most twists were with the food. And they're not good. I had the porkchop "dinuguan". I didn't realize until I got it why it was in quotation. Though the food was good, it was not what I expected. There was no dugo (blood). It doesn't even taste like dinuguan at all, regardless of what region of the Philippines you come from. The ingredients were listed on the menu, but don't be fooled by the names, they are far far far from the authenticity of Filipino cuisine. Porkchop was good though. Also the not-white rice was good. Fried chicken inasal should've been called fried chicken "inasal." It was fried alright, but that was not inasal, which means "roasted or grilled." Words do have meaning. If the chicken was actually grilled before frying, you never would've even noticed it, might as well just called it overbreaded half-sized chicken nuggets. Adobong pusit paella, aka dry adobo rice with calamari, wasn't up to par as well. Squid ink was part of the ingredients listed, but it was super dry, calling it paella doesn't even justify the taste it did not deliver. Most of the good things about Hiraya was the cafe. Sadly most of their ingredients were unavailable, but we did enjoy the ones they can make. Having a twist on their desserts/drinks was a nice touch. The rest of what we had were disappointing to say the least. Not to mention, for the price, this is not it. Maybe it was the DC pricing, but I cannot justify such overpriced disappointing dishes. There should be a heads up that these are not authentic Filipino dishes. Not even closed to being Filipino. If you're looking for Filipino dishes, this ain't it. If you're Filipino, don't expect too much. If you ain't Filipino, you'll probably love this without knowing you're not experiencing the actual taste of Filipino cuisine. This is a very americanized approach to what seemed to be unique dishes from a faraway land. I always question why don't many Filipino restaurants in America ever stick to authentic recipes. Why do we need to add twists in order to be unique? Filipino dishes are unique already by themselves, why do we need to pretend like something else? All in all, the person who made the recipes seemed to have never had authentic Filipino cuisines. "Hiraya" seemed perfect for this restaurant, because the maker seemed to just imagined the recipes. If you came from anywhere beside their website, you'd never realized any of these twists. Last twist I wanna mention was with the whooping mandatory ~22% charge without explanation. They do not even ask you if you want your receipt to see the alterations. Expect to walk out of the facility confused on how your bill turned out so high for a mediocre "Filipino" dish. Visited twice, once on a Friday morning and once on a Sunday morning. Both times, we were able to get seated quickly (a pretty long line did form shortly after we were seated on the Saturday though). After being seated, you can place your order at the coffee bar and peruse their great selection of pastries. On my first visit, we tried the Tapsilog and brisket sandwich, both of which were delicious and hearty. My favorite was definitely the Tapsilog though, which was complimented with sweet pickled vegetables to cut the richness of the meat. Everything was cooked to perfection and flavored nicely. During my second visit we tried the Tapsilog again (it simply doesn't miss), the egg and cheese sandwich, the Ube latte, and an assortment of pastries. Again, everything was phenomenal and the drinks were a fan favorite for our group since they weren't too sweet yet still packed in a lot of flavor. The pastries were also divine, but make sure to get there early-ish (before 11) on weekends to make sure they don't sell out. Hiraya also has a great brunch deal to take advantage of, but honestly the price is worth it for how filling the food is! The vibe of the cafe is also great, they really committed to a cozy and warm interior and it was fun to look at everything going on in the open kitchen while we waited for our food! Work/Study suggestion: I noticed that there were some people studying/working at the cafe during my first visit and think that it's be a good remote work spot during weekdays! Couldn't have loved Easter Brunch any more! We had an excellent meal. We were in the area and I've been wanting to try the filipino inspired coffee since I saw it somewhere on social media. I checked out the menu and we decided we would have brunch here on Easter Sunday before heading back home. Such a great choice. It was me, my husband and 2 toddlers. We were seated at the table inside by the sliding door and it could not have been more perfect. The perfect table makes me happy, what can I say! It became even more awesome when the sliding door was opened and the weather was nice. We ordered Choriburger for the kids to share, corned beef salpicao for me, and a cheeseburger for my husband. He also tried the Turon iced coffee and I tried the Ube iced coffee. When the meals arrived, it was A+ for presentation. All the meals were so tasty and delicious! The corned beef salpicao IMO was way too spicy though. Some spice is good, but this was flaming hot. Clearly the kids could not share. It was delicious, but I would lay low on the chili. The Choriburger was sumptuous and my husband enjoyed his cheeseburger as well. The iced coffee did not disappoint! We were happy! The kids were happy! I'm usually not a sucker for fancy drinks or cute decor. I prefer a hole in the wall over something chic. But this place is too freaking charming that even I love it. It's probably also because I'm Asian and love supporting badass Asians doing creative and adventurous things. The lattes are delicious and so pretty. The tocino and beef ribs are yummmmy. Had the fixed price 3 course meal plus cocktails each. With tip ran about $125 / person. I really didn't think this felt like a $100 meal. While the dishes were somewhat creative none were spectacular. Some were tasty. The cocktails had interesting ingredients but the mixology was mediocre. Portions were small and after the fixed price meal I still wanted more food. At $50 a person I would consider this a good restaurant with interest dishes even though I probably wouldn't go back. As a Filipina from a remote town in Virginia, I was super excited to try out Hiraya after seeing it on Instagram, and travelled two hours as there are not any options from where I am for Filipino fare. I had the longanisa and it was really good actually! My partner and I both had an Ube latte. While the latte was good, it didn't taste very much like ube (I think the espresso just overpowered it). Regardless I still think they make great lattes. My partner also tried their duck adobo. It was really good, but it didn't really taste like adobo, which is kind of disappointing considering adobo is a really popular Filipino dish. Service was ok. You go up to the cash register and order what you'd like. However, we got there for late lunch at 2pm and it was crowded. It's great they are having a rush, but honestly if it's being marketed as a sit down type of deal, I think they need a hostess so people can get seating. We were literally pushed out of the way by other customers from getting a table, and people were scrambling left and right to get a table. It was an extremely stressful experience. Better service management for FOH would definitely benefit Hiraya. I think if we had ordered something and not have gotten a table we would've had to eat on our laps, since no one seemed to be controlling the seating. They also did not send half of our order, and we had to go back up to the register to ask for it again. While I get it is a casual cafe, it would have been nice if someone had checked up on our order. Everything as for water and napkins and silverware are self-serve as well, so be aware of that. Ambiance is okay, it's really cute inside, but the music is so loud we couldn't hear each other. Lots of other Filipinos, so that was really nice to see. I've had the opportunity to try Chef Paolo's food when Pogiboy was in the Block at D.C. My heart broke hearing it closed as the burger was one of if not my favorite Filipino fusion burger I've ever had. Once I heard that Hiraya was opening, I had to try it. Walking in, you're greeted with a warm lit ambiance with Sun and Stars coffee brewing in the front and cooking in the back. Immediately, the line was out the door but the cozy interior with the walls tiled after Philippine culture made the bustle disappear. The line went by quickly and we were able to put in our orders with ease, especially with menus available for those standing in line. For the cafe, seating is open and they give you a number. We luckily were able to sit in the back with food and drink coming out quick. Ube Latte - Unlike most "ube" lattes out there, I'm proud to say that the ube flavor is authentic. It's not purple sweetener nor "purple vanilla" as it's marketed to be. It has the nice yam aftertaste which made me love it. The Chori Burger - this burger is pogiboy at its best. The flavor, freshness, and everything is savory and hirs the spot right away. Reminiscent of chorizo and tocino, the burger satisfies Filipino food cravings by combining a side of acharra and ube buns in one. The fries were fresh and complimented the crab fat mayo. Black Truffle Ensaymada - I love Ensaymada and wanting to try this fusion, I was surprised. It's not your usual "sponge cake" with cheese but rather its more like a cronut with black truffle and cheese. The sweetness of the bread matched with the savory of the black truffle and cheese which allowed it to be a pleasant palette cleanser. All in all, I plan to come back. The Filipino food scene in DC is growing by the minute and I'm proud to say that Chef Paolo's contributions are authentically the "Hiraya" one is looking for in a progressive Filipino spot. Very experimental Filipino fusion food, so if you are there to taste Filipino food for the first time, understand that this is far from traditional and many of the dishes are catered to a more western palate. They use some ingredients that are accessible to the DMV but you might not typically find in Filipino cooking. It's is Filipino-inspired but some dishes are too different from the original they might as well be called something else. Overall, the food is delicious and will come back again. The owner bought some remnants of his former store, Pogi Boy, with the ube buns and other ube items. I think the buns are great staples for the store. We got the ukoy which was one of my favorite dishes growing up in the Philippines, but this one was a vegan version, which I found bland because ukoy is usually characterized by its shrimpy taste. Overall, it's also a healthier alternative to Filipino food. I really liked the duck adobo but the garlic rice that came with it does not have enough garlic. We also got lumpiang sariwa which is salad on a crepe. The place is self-service. You order on the counter, seat yourself and grab your own plates and utensils on the sideboard. My main complaint is how loud it is in there. They opened up the entire wall towards H Street so you can hear every fire truck, car honking, etc. from the street. What a great addition to the H Street Corridor! Stopped in today to check out Hiraya and was very pleased with my experience. We ordered the Filipino Breakfast with pork belly -- the pork belly was the star of the visit. We also ordered an iced Pandan latte and a hot Turun latte. The pandan was perfect for someone who typically orders an iced vanilla latte -- the menu describes it as "screwpine leaves with vanilla-like flavor" and I would agree. The inside is well decorated with very fun dishware -- especially the hot mugs! Because it's recently opened, I think there's still a few kinks in their order system (I would maybe place the full menu at a table not right at the checkout so people can easily look prior to ordering, similar to the way Yellow in Georgetown is set up) however they didn't impede majorly on my visit. This place surpassed my expectations! We got the Chorizo Burger, Pandan Latte, Makulay (Colorful) Latte, Curry Squash dish and a Pork Rice dish. I initially didn't have very high expectations on the burger but the ube bun was super soft and the pork meat was super juicy. THEY ARE CLOSED FROM 3-5PM. We checked their hours on Google AND their website before we drove more than 30 minutes to come here for a coffee and pastry on a sunny afternoon. We arrived at 2:55pm and they informed us they were closed from 3-5pm every day--something not listed on their hours anywhere we looked. (I submitted an hours edit to Google after our issue, but they still haven't bothered to update their hours on their website.) Instead of letting us sit at a 2-top considering their oversight, they let us get a drink and pastry to-go. Unfortunately there's nowhere nice to sit on H Street and enjoy it, so we had to take it back to our car and leave entirely. Super bummed. While we were waiting for our drinks, another couple came in and were really shocked it was closed, since they had also come to H Street specifically to eat here. They left without bothering to try for a takeout drink. 3 stars because the drinks and pastries were very good, minus 2 for the major inconvenience and waste of a sunny afternoon. Atmosphere: small restaurant which was totally packed which i love to see on H St. Many love plants, very inviting. Food: -Filipino breakfast with mushroom. It had deep fried mushrooms, pickled veggies, garlic fried rice, and a fried egg. I think because this was a meat substitution option, it lacked a bit of flavor that the meat would usually bring. 6/10 -Pandan latte. Good. The lattes are very picture worthy when they arrive, pleasing to the eye. I'm not a huge coffee person but was in the mood for coffee on this day. 7/10 -Matcha profiteroles. Good, not too sweet. 6/10. Service: i was to preface this by saying that i came in during busy Sunday brunch service. IMPO, service was subpar. Unfortunately this place was a huge disappointment for me after hearing/reading amazing reviews. First of all, I guess we had bad luck because the menu we saw online didn't match the menu we received in the restaurant. It was drastically different and the item I wanted wasn't on it. It seems they just updated their web site possible yesterday and I had looked at it a few days prior. The menu we were presented had totally different options and was a lot more expensive. I ended up ordering bomba rice with fried calamari. The calamari was good but the rice tasted awful. I know bomba rice should be toasty but this rice was basically burned and smoky. $28 for some fried calamari basically.... My friend got the mushroom sisig and it was so tiny. Everything is tiny and so expensive. My friend who got beef did like it, and the garlic rice was good. I also like the mimosa cocktail. Also the cafe coffee drinks are lovely. Be prepared to have your socks knocked off! I visited this new restaurant on a Friday evening with a friend and arrived around 6pm. I love the semi casual set up they have for ordering and seating. You approach the counter, order, get a number and pick a table. We opted to sit in the fenced patio area facing H street there was a beautiful plant behind us that offered some privacy. While it was 6pm I still wanted to try a latté so I ordered what's known as the rainbow latte and it was honestly one of the best lattés I've ever had. Once my friend arrived we ordered two calamansi crush cocktails and they were light and refreshing. For entrees we ordered the Tocino which is an all day breakfast offering of pork belly rice and eggs over easy. The dish was a large portion gushing with flavor in every single bite. My friend had the adobo and we shared sweet potato fries, she loved her dish also noting how flavorful it was. The sweet potato fries came with a dipping sauce that really took them up a notch. I absolutely loved my first experience at Hiraya and I'm looking forward to returning and for the upstairs to open. read more

If you are at all connected with the Filipino community, you know that word of mouth spreads like wildfire. You don't even have to be Filipino. If one out of 100 of your friends are Filipino, you are connected. And when they like something, they will tell you. Hiraya is one of the places recommended through those connections. If it is good or bad, you will know even before you go. So, when a recommendation came my way, I had to try it. Forget that you don't live in DC. Forget that it is hard to find parking. Forget that there are demonstrations happening nearby. Forget the car jackings you hear in DC. You have to come here to try. As soon as you enter, you feel the modern cuisine and chic ambiance. Don't worry if there is no one to seat you, just find a seat, grab a menu from either of the two counters and start studying the offerings. I recommend the pork belly breakfast dish. I forgot the name because I'm not Filipino. Then, get the beef/steak with the onion sauce. It is to die for. Even the french fries are cooked perfectly (shoestring McDonald-like fries, but BETTER). Since I went with the 1/100 Filipino, they told me that the only thing that would have made the meal better is a pot of steamed white rice to go with the tasty meals. If you like iced coffee, try the iced UBE drink. It tastes more like iced coffee, but there is UBE in it, I promise. Well, after a tasty meal and a cool dessert drink, I'm ready to head back out to find my car. Just be care outside.... From picky eater to you, I recommend trying this place out. I'll be coming back, even if it takes me over an hour to get here. read more

Unfortunately, Hiraya has yet to leave me fully satisfied. The beverage I had (pandan boba) was saccharine with a really unpleasant texture (and no lid/an improper straw). On my return trip for dinner, I ordered their one vegan option and it was served to me with egg on top. The kitchen staff were adamant that it was served with egg, even though it's listed on the menu as vegan. They then remade it after some back and forth, and it was lacking flavor and was not filling at all. I didn't love how they served tea in piping hot stoneware without handles. Hiraya is cute, and I think their coffee is probably solid -- overall, it hasn't worked out for me yet. read more

Amazing place! Great food, great service. Complimentary buck wheat pandesal, palabok, roasted duck shareable came with rice, grilled Bok Choy & apple slaw. Dessert, we did the chocolate flourless cake and a decaf Turon latte. All very worth the price and tasty! read more

We ordered the sisig which was delicious. However, I had a mixed experience with the drinks. The hot lattes we ordered were lukewarm and not hot, but the ube horchata was good. read more

Cute boutique coffee shop/restaurant in the heart of H street. I have only tried the coffee here, but it certainly hits the mark in taste and appearance. Very chic inside, with fresh croissants and other small to go pastries. read more

Stopped into Hiraya's morning café and was absolutely delighted. Their coffee offerings are inspired - the ube latte was creamy dreamy, and as someone who prefers espresso drinks unadorned, I love the fact that the flavors are subtle - not overwhelming. The breakfast parfait consist of the delicious granola over creamy yogurt topped with berries and a touch of honey - perfection. Have to mention the ceramics - beautifully rustic, and created by Material Things Studio just over the DC line in Maryland. Can't wait to try this place for dinner. read more

I came for some breakfast and there were some hits and misses. I really enjoyed the turon latte which was delicious and the churron came with a dipping jam that was addictive. The iced ube latte was just ok for me as it didn't have enough ube flavor for me. I also tried the tocino which didn't taste like traditional tocino and was pork belly which was not bad but not what I was expecting. read more
