I do not say this lightly; this was by far the worst service that I have ever received in my life! This was my first time going here, and this will definitely be my last. Do not go to this restaurant if you value good service and a good restaurant experience.
First, upon walking in, the server, an Asian woman, motions for me and my friend (who is Chinese) to sit towards the back of the restaurant. We head in that direction, and quickly realize that the table options (only 2 open tables) in that area were both bad. One was directly in front of the bathrooms, and the table behind that was practically in the kitchen! There was an open table in the front of the restaurant, where other customers were sitting as well, so we grabbed the table up front, which was directly in front of the restaurant entrance (and exit). It only gets worse from here.
The server asks for our order, and we start by ordering two appetizers, the shumai and the fried oysters. Several minutes later, she comes back to take the rest of our order. My friend orders a 3 roll sushi combo that comes with miso soup, and a Thai iced tea. I ordered the pad see ew with duck.
This server arrives with the fried oysters and the shumai. They both tasted good, however, the portions were so small. There were 4 fried oysters, and there were 6 shumai, which were the smallest shumai that I have ever seen in my life by far. For the amount provided, they were significantly overpriced. The server didn't even bring us chopsticks or offer to, just gave us each a fork.
Then, she brings the 3 roll sushi combo that my friend ordered...nothing else. Normally, miso soup is provided before the sushi. That is a common thing, except on this occasion apparently. She still hasn't brought or offered chopsticks, but whatever, we just ate the sushi with our hands. She also doesn't provide any updates on the rest of our food, she essentially just drops the food on the table and leaves in an instant.
My friend asked the server about the Thai iced tea and the miso soup, and the server says they'll be right out. Again, several minutes later the server comes back with miso soup (nothing else), sets it on the table, and walks away. No mention of my friend's Thai iced tea or my pad see ew order, or the fact that she brought out miso soup essentially after the sushi entree was finished!
Meanwhile, while all of this is going on, other customers, who all happen to be white, are coming in after us, being seated, and served, having their food brought out together, including noodle dishes like the pad see ew I've been waiting for!
While I was there, one other black couple came in to sit down and get food, and they were asked to sit at the back of the restaurant, even though there was a much better table open up front by where I was sitting. I'm not sure what happened with them, but I noticed that after a few minutes they left the restaurant and were audibly and visibly upset.
An hour has gone by since we placed the order, and I asked my friend to go to the back and ask for the check (without the Thai iced tea or pad see ew that we never received) so we could pay and leave. My friend told me that the server asked in response, "would you like the Thai iced tea to go?" Really?! Again, no acknowledgement of the pad see ew, and now she's making a last ditch effort to keep $5 on our bill. If you could whip up a Thai iced tea that quickly to go, then where was it for the last hour?
When I went to the back of the restaurant (with my friend) to pay, I asked what happened to my noodles that I ordered? Why did they never bring them to me or say anything about it? We had a whole conversation about the order when I placed it since they had pad see ew on their menu and duck wasn't one of the proteins, but since they have duck elsewhere on their menu, I asked for my pad see ew to be with Duck, we agreed on a price (which would've cost significantly (about 33%) more than the regular dish, so it's not like she forgot, and if she did forget, I would have so much more respect for her if she just said that as opposed to taking no accountability or acknowledging her or the restaurants failures.
I have been to hundreds, if not thousands of restaurants, and have not had service this bad before. There is no excuse for this. I don't care if she was the only one waiting tables, there was like 5 tables with customers at any given moment, the restaurant is so small. That doesn't excuse the poor communication. Even if this was my first day on the job and I had never worked at a restaurant before, there is no way I would allow this to happen. The service was so abysmal that it feels intentional and racist. Again, this is not something that I say lightly.
I was visiting DC for the weekend and was looking forward to exploring Chinatown, and now, after this experience, not only will I not go to this restaurant ever again, I'm hesitant to go to another restaurant in DC's Chinatown period. read more
