Not sure what all the hype is about...maybe because i am not from Utah but this is just an average burger joint. Got the avocado H burger with onion rings. The burger was decent but nothing special. Just ate Hire's delicious BLT, and am glad this classic hasn't been struck from the menu, because it is...CHOICE. Also ordered a Tropic Dr. Pepper, and it was OK, and could appeal greatly to others, but I wouldn't order it again; sweet, coconutty, and lime-y. People here are assholes!! Rudest people I know!! My dad had just gotten done with surgery with obvious effects on his face and the lady here is absolutely awful. She yelled at him when he was just asking a question and was just being snippy. Talk to your workers here and make them have simple manners or else you'll lose a few customers. read more

We obviously had a much different experience than other reviewers experienced here. We came in during the lunch hour and it was pretty busy (maybe just 2 or 3 tables empty) and we were immediately seated and the waitress came by within 1-2 minutes with water. We ordered and hardly had time to look around and chat a little before we had giant burgers sitting in front of us. I ordered the root beer float and it was possible the best float I've had in years (even better than A&W's). We ordered cheese fries as an appetizer and I probably wouldn't recommend them. Basically just greasy fries with cheddar cheese melted on top. But the extra fry sauce was very good and I was tempted to buy a bottle on the way out. But the burgers were pretty good. I tried the Hire's Big H Double and it was too much food... I should have ordered the Single. We also ordered a hamburger with fresh avocado. They were very generous in their avocado portions unlike many restaurants. Overall I'm not sure it was the best burger I've ever had but I wouldn't be opposed to returning here. The atmosphere is a small-town diner that has been somewhat recently renovated. The 3 employees we interacted with were smiling and courteous and fast. read more

One thing I will say about my burger and onion rings that I got at this place as it was very delicious and you could tell it was made here or not somewhere else. The problem... The price. For a regular burger (their hires burger) and an onion ring with a small Diet Coke: $14.23 (I added bacon). Very very steep price for what you get. Not large portions either. I guess nostalgia costs. It was a Friday night and it seemed as if the employees were a bit more interested in socializing than working. Maybe I'll try it for a different night. One other thing... The people here do not know how to make onion rings. Only half of the onion rings had batter on them. Maybe if they flour the onion rings before they batter than them it would work better read more

Hours online and on store front at posted saying they close at 10pm went to get shakes from their carhop service at 9pm waited until 9:40pm workers kept looking out at us and other cars but never came out to take anyone's orders or to say they are closed. After every other vehicle had given up we finally left. We didn't want to be pushy because of how hard COVID is on food workers but to let us sit there and not say anything or have signs posted anywhere was kind of rude. Goodness the menu is huge!! I pulled up to the case hop service. Which is awesome if you know what you want. If you've never been before (like me) then they will grab you a menu with a smile. I had the country H burger. That's a burger their way with bacon on top. It was fantastic. I also had cheese fries. Real melted cheddar on top. Not canned cheese. Delicious. I usually like Hires but my experience I had tonight was completely awful. My mom and I went to the car hop and ordered in our car. We parked and the waitress came right out and took our order and she took our credit card right then. All we ordered was 2 burgers and 2 fries. 45 minutes passed and we still didn't have our food, the waitress never brought our credit card back to us. Why did she keep it so long? Was she writing down the card number? After 45 minutes of waiting my mom got out of the card and went inside and at least asked for the credit card back. After a few more minutes she went back inside and she just asked how much longer it would be? Shortly after my mom went inside another lady got out of her car and also went inside. The other other had waited 30 minutes. My mom asked the waitress doing the car hop how much longer it would be? The waitress responded to my mom and said "I'm not in the mood to deal with you I'll get my manager". My mom responded and then said "I'm not getting mad at you, I'm just curious how much longer". The waitress says "I'll get my manager." The manager comes up and asks my mom what the problem is. My mom says "I've just waited 45 minutes for my food." The manager says "All the people in the dining room has also waited 45 minutes." And then she walked away and the bratty waitress comes up and hands us our food and said nothing. How rude! The waitress and the manager should not work in customer service if they are going to treat people that way. My mom was nice about it and wasn't even yelling at them and for them to treat her that way. They didn't even bring our card back out to us. It would of been nice if they came out to our car and apologized for the wait. I understand it was busy but a lot of places get busy but you still don't wait that long. It doesn't take that long to make burgers. The wait was irritating but when we asked them nicely how much longer they were so dang rude about it! They should of at least apologized or explained why it was taking so long. I wish I would of gotten something for free! A lot of people in the car hop left cuz of how ridiculous it was. I've never done the car hop, I've always eaten inside but I've never waited that long there. I did not give them a tip. I work in customer service and if someone was asking me a question or frustrated at something i would never speak or treat them badly like we were treated tonight by a waitress and the manager. There's probably a nostalgic factor for me in rating Hires since I have fond memories of coming here as a kid with my dad. The burgers are great, the fries are tasty and the service is always good. This particular location has a pizza place attached to it (I think a lot or all of the Hires locations do now) and I tried some of the meatballs and the meat sauce was actually very good, which was surprising because my expectations weren't that high. I did not enjoy the food and I worried about the state of the kitchen my food was coming out of... I highly recommend that you look at the Salt Lake County Health department inspections for this place. This was probably the best decision I made today. I had driven by Hires Big H many times, but always have been too scared to try it out. But today I stopped in and was pleasantly surprised. I don't know what I expected, maybe some weird mix between a truckers stop and Dennys. But Hires turned out to be a simple diner that served good cheap eats. The burger combo keeps you under ten bucks and you get a root beer float. They also have a car hop which is a really nice alternative for my antisocial moods. If I could give a -5 Star that would be my review! We have been long time customers of Hires, however the cost of their food has become outrageous and the service is terrible! We were there for lunch with 4 little kids and two adults and ordered 4 kids meals 2 big H combos and 2 shakes and our bill was $96.00 plus a 10.00 tip! $106.00 dollars for lunch! When I reviewed my receipt they had made several mistakes and refunded me $17.25 but that is still 90.00 for lunch! The restaurant was filthy and everyone around us was complaining about the service and the condition of the restaurant! The guy cleaning off tables sprayed the chairs and table behind us with cleaner while we were sitting there and soaked my jacket with cleaner! Needless to say this will be the last time we ever go there! I understand COVID has been hard on restaurants and their employees but the price gauging here is outrageous and they will never last if they don't recognize it. You can go to many other fast food places for less than half the price and even though Hires is a local family owned business I will never take my family there again! read more

Food was pretty bad. My veggie patty was not even 1/8" thick, the bun was nasty. Nobody in our group liked their food. Two of the people had worked at Hires years ago and said the food had gone way downhill. As for the service, we waited maybe twenty minutes , only to find out my original order was not available. Also no way to tell a shake from a malt. Oh and they ran out of onion rings This brought up stories of "the old days" and the stingy bastard old man who started the place (Don Hale). Came here with a huge group on the recommendation of one of our group members. Almost missed it because the Litzas Pizza sign is on top. Plenty of parking. They seated us quickly and service was great. Friendly and helpful. Decor is fine- very old school feel and 50's diner theme. Floor and seat were clean. The menu is a little confusing but eventually you get their names. The food is full of real and fresh ingredients, and everything tasted great, like something I would find in a home kitchen. The root beer freeze is a shake - root beer and ice cream blended. It was not what I expected but it was tasty if you like soft serve. They didn't have avocado, so be warned they sometimes are out of ingredients, but that comes with fresh and real. The cheese fries were great, no complaints, and the fry sauce tasted great. I can see why they sell some of their sauces and mixes at the front counter. The Country Big H was delicious. Real grill, ground beef that was not dry but not red either. Country bacon is just bacon - but it is good bacon, a bit thicker than some and long strips that added a lot of good taste and flavor to my burger. Here's my secret confession: I've never actually had a burger from Hires! Crazy I know but the first time I went there I saw chili cheese fries on the menu and I can't seem to break away and try anything else. They have yummy fresh cut double fried french fries. I've had them as cheese fries and their almost as good as the chili cheese fries. The chili is made in house and has bits of ground beef and beans in a nice rich tomato sauce. My other guilty pleasure when I come here are the shake. They're so delicious. Thick and creamy and just big enough that you hate yourself when you're done drinking it. The salted caramel (which doesn't really taste salted, they should just call it caramel) is my favorite but the chocolate and strawberry are classic for a reason. If I'm not getting the shake then I'm definitely getting the cherry diet coke. They add the syrup themselves and while it does add calories to the diet coke it's definitely worth it. I like that Hire's has a car hop (drive up). But they are notoriously slow. I've both called in an order and driven up and placed an order and both ways I've had to wait. This isn't necessarily a bad thing though as my food is always piping hot and freshly made. I've only gone in once and that was not a good experience: empty restaurant and lousy service. But everyone has a bad day so I'm not changing my review based on that one experience. read more

BUT, and I stress but - maybe it's the pregnancy hormones talking - I love their burgers. My husband and I do not got into the regular clientele and we often get crusty looks and stares but we don't even care because the good really is delicious and I love the root beer floats. When the root beer float craving sets in, I would always head to Hires Big H on Fort Union. It's not that theirs is so wonderful, rather it's just that they're the main local place for items like this, and in general I like to support local if it's fairly good. Standard diner fare is the norm here, and their hamburgers are enjoyed by a lot of locals. I found the onion rings to be good and couldn't go without those. read more

This is still my favorite burger place in SLC and I make it a ritual to go there every time I visit. Better than 5 Guys, In-n-Out, Crown, Astro, etc. For a solid old fashioned burger and old style fries and rings there's no better. The fries are fried in an oil that gives it a hearty flavor and the combination with the fry sauce is great. The fries are probably the one thing that brings me back every time. I always try to eat in as they serve Hires rootbeer in a frozen mug which makes it taste different from run of the mill fountain drinks. This is the only place you can get Hires rootbeer in Utah now. Another good thing about this place is that all 3 stores are run by the Hale children of the original owner. Gotta support that. The only better place I've experienced was Fatbelly Burger in Carbondale, CO where they serve grass fed beef burgers. Completely different class of burger. Holy crap, as much as Hires is good, Fatbelly was 10 times better. No comparison between that and ALL other burgers anywhere. High priced American Kobe beef burgers are nothing compared either. read more

Good concept, but man ... this place just about made me sick. I got the Jalapeño H and it had no taste. Their fries were terribly undercooked. If you order a shake, they bring it out BEFORE your food - my mom taught me to never spoil my dinner! They also badger you about signing up for their loyalty program. The application required so much personal information, I thought it was for a credit card. Needless to say, I'm not a reward member. Ever since moving to Utah I've heard about the Hires Big H in the area and how wonderful it was. When I drove by one I thought I'd give it a try. It was a typical 1950s drive-in menu. I ordered the grilled halibut sandwich, onion rings (which I'd been told were excellent) and an orange freeze. My satisfaction was 50/50. The halibut was breaded, fried, and then grilled. It had a good flavor and I appreciated the fish especially in northern Utah area. The bun was fresh and soft and you could tell that it wasn't from the typical prepackaged prefab manufacturer. The onion rings on the other hand were terrible. Thick slices of onion with breading that fell off instantly as soon as you touch it. I don't recommend them. The service was attentive and the food preparation time was appropriately not fast, not slow as they made food to order. The young lady who took my order and brought the food in car hop style was friendly and personable and knew her menu well. I may return if in the area in an impromptu way but would not go out of my way and visit on purpose. read more
