Delicious sushi! I usually get one of their combination rolls and a crystal shrimp roll. The mussels are good, too. Prices are average for the area. Whereas I miss the experience of sitting at the sushi bar, I've gotten takeout several times during the COVID-19 era. Still the same excellent food, always ready when I get there and packaged well for the trip home. 20% off for people who come in and pick up the order instead of using one of the online delivery services. I've know About Hiroba because one of my best friends took me there when they were in Skyline Blvd. When I saw they loved to Sparks I was so excited because honestly I don't want to go to IJJI'S 2 anymore. So I've been here twice now. Once with my family party of 4 and once by myself. I don't think the visits are as remarkable as when they used to be at their old location. The Place: It's a small place at the same center where "Peg's" the breakfast place is. It was lunch time on a weekday and I couldn't find a parking spot. I had to park in front of the Hawaiian restaurant around the corner. The place has table and bar seating. The Food: The Sushi was OK, I had seaweed salad and it wasn't that good. I got some mussels and they don't do mussels in shells. Instead they put them in a container. I wasn't a big fan of them. I got some "upside down shrimps," they were good. I had "Donald Ducks" nigiri and this is when I felt something tasted off. I'm not picky at all with food. But the avocado tasted bad and had some brown spots. The flavor was spoiled by the avocado in my opinion. I also had some "Sierra" which is like the mountain roll, it was delicious! I really like it. I understand sushi is so different, and hard to evaluate, one ingredient not being fresh enough and it can make the whole lunch taste bad. I would come back and give them another chance, because they are close to my house and it's nice to have different sushi options. For desert I had Vanilla Ice Cream and it was good! I was in Reno on business and felt like sushi. Based on 4.5 stars, I figured nothing could go wrong. When I arrived, I was greeted by a very friendly staff. I was early for dinner, roughly 5:30, so the restaurant was pretty slow. I sat at the sushi bar and I was offered an all you can eat (AYCE) for $24.95. I tried the different varieties of sushi and it was very fresh and tasty. Although the portions of fish were a bit small (typical of an AYCE sushi bar), they did not over portion the rice (which is also typical of an AYCE sushi bar). The fish to rice ratio for sushi was decent. The staff was very attentive throughout my dinner. Even as business picked up, the level of service remained very high. A great dining experience! If you're in the Sparks/Reno area and craving sushi, give them a try. I don't think you will be disappointed! read more

Teresa aka Speedy was so quick, she is a sushi making goddess. The service and food were absolutely amazing. The fish was very fresh. The decor at this location seems to be an after thought, but we sat at the bar, so I didn't really mind. Interesting note, they do take out, never even thought of it. I loved listening to the guy ordering who absolutely loved this place and was from out of town , but is here for work occasionally. When it comes to explaining and naming the rolls I had, I just can't. Something happens at sushi restaurants and I can't accurately detail my rolls. As it was a Tuesday, we received free sake with our AYCE. You would assume a small hot sake, but no, it was a large. Birthday bonus for me. I did enjoy the strawberry mochi ice cream. Please add a zero star option! Why the heck my 9/10 year old wanted to eat here is beyond me!! My baby wanted decent sushi for her birthday, she ended up getting sub par, half warm fish. This is the newer Hiroba on Prater in Sparks, not the old one on Skyline.  This location is located in the shopping center where Panda Express and L&L are, right next to the boba shop.  Like the old Hiroba, this place is still super small inside.  This new location is about half the size of the old one. Do expect a wait time on most days.  I came here for dinner with a large party of 12 to celebrate my college graduation.  I'm glad I made a reservation because it was super busy and for a large party we took most of all the tables.  I really like how they kept basically everything the same, including the items on the menu and the size of their rolls. I have always been a fan of their rolls because of their small size, because it means that I can try more rolls that they have.  I must say, the quality of sushi from both places have gone down a bit. It does not taste how it used to. I feel like splitting the Hiroba into two locations brought the quality down a bit. I also like how they kept their extensive dessert menu, because that was what set them apart from other sushi restaurants that only serve ice cream.  Overall I'm glad they kept some stuff from the old Hiroba. read more

I recently tried Hiroba for the first time. The Sparks location is close to me and I was in a sushi mood. The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated. I was greeted immediately when I walked in the door. The chefs were attentive and quick with preparation. I tried a few long rolls and the mussels...all were delicious. Maybe because we came at lunch but everything seemed old and dry even their ginger/wasabi...Their tiny muscle meat appetizer tasted old and dry. Their fried calamari came out nice and hot. Was very disappointed in quality of sushi...reminded me of grocery store sushi. My kids didn't really want to eat it either. We tried the new Hiroba recently while in Reno to get away from the crazy amounts of smoke in Northern CA. As others have mentioned, this spot is smaller than the old one. Got lucky and they had an open table for four without a wait. We decided to go for the ayce. The good - everything was very good with reasonable amounts of rice and fish ratio. The salmon skin hand roll was so good that I had two. Yum! Dessert was included and was pretty standard fare, but tasty. Price at $19.99 for lunch was a bit steep, but the value was there. The bad - we ate a lot and needed to go shopping to walk off some of the meal to avoid the on coming food coma. Service was very good. Our waiter was a young guy who reminded us of one if our son's college roommates. Overall, 4-1/2 stars, but will round up. read more

The restaurant had a welcoming ambiance but my level of concern started to raise when the first plate of sushi was served. All of the slices of fish on the Nigiri was terribly dry and did not have much of a pleasant flavor at all and seemed more like the fish had just been sitting out all day. Just really like Hiroba. Went there for the first time about a year ago after a school friend hyping it big time. It all starts the moment that you walk through the door. The hellos. From everyone. If you've never been a VIP whose presence is noted by all and they're all happy to see you, well, here's your chance. It feels gimmicky. It feels forced. But, it feels undeniably awesome because they never break character. I watched others come.in after me and ot out smiles on their faces. The value is incredible. This is way above average sushi that's all you can eat for like 18.99. Go on the right day (maybe just not Fri-Sun?) and a large hot sake is thrown in. It's a fairly quiet little, dining area minus the boisterous staff hellos with an L-shaped bar for something like 8 to 10 people. Swrvice is prompt and courteous, but I don't get a sense that there's a ton of tolerance for inefficiency or indecisiveness (personally I like that). I've also had multiple glpd results with delivery during the Covid-19 restaurant-goer living nightmare. It's one of my favorite sushi spots in Reno with an unmatched value. This location doesn't have the same quality that the one in Reno did. I loved the old one. This one was messy, there were flying bugs near us while we dined that we had to keep shooing away, the food was bland and did not seem fresh, there weren't a ton of options, and it was too pricey for what it was ($70 for an adult and a teen). The guys making the sushi did not seem very cleanly (touching face and hair while making the sushi) and just made the food then sat around watching TV, instead of cleaning and taking care of the place and food. The quality has gone WAY downhill. When I eat sushi, I usually eat a ton, but here, we ordered a few rolls then didn't want to eat anymore because they weren't good. Location is very accessible and easy to find. Menu looked great and was not sure what to order so when I called to get some grub I asked the gentleman on the other line to provide two rolls he'd recommend and what he suggested was delicious for take out. The staff even though I did take out was extremely pleasant upon arrival. I ordered a Golden Gate and Snowy Mountain which would recommend. Portions were smaller than what I'm used to getting which is why I only gave it four stars but if larger I'd provide a five star rating. I went to Hiroba last night with a party of 1. Haha they were quick to sit me down and got the food out extremely fast even though they had a full restaurant. It was awesome. They checked on me often to see if I needed more food, water, etc and were genuinely nice. I also noticed how fast they were to clean tables after people left so they could get new people in them. Went to have some sushi for lunch. All you can eat is $18.95 and includes appetizer and dessert. The sushi rolls were full of flavor and guess what when it says hot, it actually has some kick! The nice part about this place is not just one person is helping you out, the staff help each other when their section of the bar is packed so the orders come super quick. Some of the better sushi I've had in a while only regret is that I couldn't eat more! Also got a huge kick about how they had to denote where there is raw fish on the menu.... I figure they had some complaints and that's why they noted raw fish. If you don't like raw fish you probably should not be at a sushi bar and that's my tip for the day! read more

Slightly overdue, this update us from 10/9/21. We were a party of 4 at around 1pm, seated at a table. The server made us all turn in order sheets at same time, both for appetizers and sushi. As apps started coming out, she just placed them all at the end of the table. When the sushi started coming out, same thing, like saying, "here, you guys figure it out" Wound up with multiple servers doing this, then they would go lean against counter and talk or be on their phones. No one checked on us, barely cleared plates or refilled water. Food was good, as always, but due to poor service, none of us will go back. Guess they don't care about customer service or a good tip. read more

My wife and I had AYCE. The tuna tasted a bit dry, the rice was also dry. My wife got a stomach ache as soon as she was done. It hit me a few hours later after we left the restaurant. Not sure how old the food was but becareful. Not many people in the restaurant so the food might ve been sitting there for a while. Now we are both really sick, and we know it came from here because we have not eating anything since yesterday. Atmosphere - Been to the Skyline location and this place is much smaller. On a Sunday afternoon they were able to handle the crowd. The two of us sat at the bar, we were joined by another couple. So that small part of the bar was filled up and had our chef in front of us. Food Drinks - Just water for me today. Lunch - We had a fair number of rolls. The tuna was fresh and my daughter was loving it. We both loved the Boston and the tuna blossom rolls. I really liked the tuna blossom roll and ordered it again so I finish with it. The cuts could have been better some of the pieces were very large. Dessert - Mine was really that tuna blossom. My daughter say the green tea cheesecake and had to order it. She fell in love with it and could not stop talking about all day. She shared a small bite with me, and it was really good. Service - Classic Hiroba style as you walk in you are greet with the staff yelling hello. Like I said we shared a chef with another couple that walked in right after us. Our chef was going to town. I love that their rolls are smaller and have less rice (which means more fish!). Their cuts are perfect and the sashimi was DELICIOUS. Best salmon I have ever tasted. Execellent service! Our food was quickly served and the empty dishes were taken away just as fast. They made sure to check in on us to see if we needed refills for our drinks and if we needed more order sheets. Only downside is that this place is VERY small. I can see this being an issue once more people realize the restaurant is open. Also they had several chairs stacked in front of the windows which was really odd. I'm sure there is a lack of storage, but I'd give the food and service a 10/10! Well done! read more

If I could give zero stars I would. Ordered here for the first time tonight. Order arrived late, and seaweed salad had a human hair in it. Raw rolls did not taste or smell very good. The service was really good, but Hiroba has this thing about selecting extremely small locations, lol. We had to wait for 10-15 minutes for a table because the restaurant only seats like 25 ppl. The mussels come out in these cute dishes, but they were kind of rubbery. The nigiri was cut very thick, and the rolls were pretty good as well. Not my fave sushi in Reno, but it wasn't bad. They also had a deal where you got a free sake with the purchase of a beer. We went on a Friday around 6, so I assumed it would be busy I just didn't realize the location was so small. A couple years ago, well-known Hiroba Sushi pulled up stakes from its southwest Reno location and moved to the Marina neighborhood in Sparks. It's been years since I'd been to the original, so I invited a couple lady friends (and one little lady) to join me on a busy Saturday evening. Though the bar was full, there was no wait for a table. Kid-sized portions of chicken teriyaki and beef bulgogi are offered, but the kid wanted none of it. A simple bowl of rice ($1.50) and vanilla mochi dessert ($2.50) suited her just fine. Her rice, my large hot sake ($7), and 4 piece orders of calamari rings and gyoza quickly arrived, though we did have to remind our server about a missing order of baked mussels well into the meal. The mussels seemed a bit grainy and overcooked; the rings and dumplings average. Not bad, just nothing I'd repeat. I ordered my nigiri favorites, including fresh, cured, and smoked salmon; fresh and seared tuna; snapper, yellowtail, scallop, mackerel, octopus, tobiko (flying fish roe), and a quail egg shooter. I mostly got the salty/tart shooter to freak the kid out; mission accomplished. The fish to rice ratio was excellent, and the cuts were more-or-less bite sized. The octopus was reasonably tender, and the mackerel tasted pretty fresh (always a good sign). I particularly enjoyed the smoked and cured bites of salmon, and lightly cooked scallops. Tasty orders of Mickey Mouse--tuna, avocado, krab--and Donald Duck--salmon, avocado, krab--were a bit more than a single bite, but we managed. For raw long rolls, the ladies selected Rainbow with krab, avocado, cucumber, assorted fish, tobiko; Philadelphia with cream cheese, salmon, scallion, tobiko; and a Spicy Tuna roll with cucumber, scallion, and hot chili sauce. For cooked they ordered King Kong with tempura shrimp, cream cheese, krab, panko, and teriyaki; and Guapo with cream cheese, crystal shrimp, cilantro, avocado, krab, and teriyaki. I tossed in a spider hand roll of soft shell crab, cucumber, krab, teriyaki, mayo; and a crystal shrimp hand roll for good measure. Being generally not fond of cooked rolls or cream cheese in sushi, I was pleasantly surprised by both the Guapo and King Kong. As with the nigiri, the rice ratio was good and the pieces bite-sized. The cheese was used sparingly, and the ingredients fairly balanced with a pleasant, spicy kick. So help me, I might actually order one of those myself. The Rainbow roll was pretty much as expected; nothing fancy. I have never sampled a Philly roll I liked, but this one was a worth a couple bites. Unfortunately, Spicy Tuna was the one roll that failed to please. The spiced tuna competed with hot sauce and a whole lot of scallion for attention, leaving an overall effect of just being hot. In a blind taste test, I couldn't tell you what kind of fish it contained. The hand rolls were stuffed full of crunchy goodies, the soft shell crab being particularly good. The kid was entertained by the sheer number of plates involved, and the fact she was the only one not complaining about being stuffed. Smart kid. read more

The reason I am writing this review is actually because I witnessed a group of active duty military request the military discount and they were made to stand there for 20 minutes while the staff talked about them in Spanish. I understand Spanish. Active military members are not entitled a*holes thank you very much. Ridiculous that there are other reviews like that for this place! Pass it on. read more
