Food was typical hawaiian food, easier to pick food choices when you can see it vs just the menu of items. Brown rice available for no additional charge is a plus. Specials were clearly listed outside but not inside so make sure to lookat the board before u enter. We got loco moco which was good except for the hair inside the plate. I like extra things inside of lunch plates but hair isnt one of them. Also ordered three other things to go, papya chicken was one of them with rice, when we arrived at the airport it was just rice. :( no food for Dad at home. I haven't eaten meat in a year and a half, but something about my friend's burger made me take a bite, and it was amazing. At less than $3 a burger, you can't go wrong. Reminded me of the old Piper In in Grants Pass. They have a lot of other ethnic food, but I ended up ordering my own burger- no burger (fancy grilled cheese, if you will). read more

No frills. Pretty good cheap food. I don't know if they make things to order though. When I ordered the Korean chix the server had to check in the back to see if any fried chix was available. Lucky for me there was a batch just made. Fried chix was very crispy and flavorful. I would recommend avoiding the Mac salad. It's more like mayo with pieces of macaroni. read more

This place is fabulous!! Spent a week in Hilo area and ate here at least four times!! MMM!! Among other things. hamburger curry, beef stew, terriyaki chicken, and chicken katsu. So good!! Typical plate lunch, scoop macaroni salad, two scoops rice. Didn't actually have the breakfast but saw others enjoying it and it looked amazing. No indoor seating, a couple of tables outside. Basing my stars on VALUE alone, a three item combo plate for $8.95! Ordered two, fed three very hungry tourists, leftover for five (pm) in-hotel appetizers (with Wild Turkey rye whiskey;). Yes, it's a hole in a wall, cafeteria-style eatery that serves food fast, but decent food quality, specially the chicken katsu and breaded fish filet. Today, a friend took me to Hiro's Place and I was very surprised to find a one choice plate lunch, which includes rice and salad, is only $6.50 + tax. I ordered the Spicy Chicken Eggplant. It was the best take out I've had in a long time. The price was fantastic and the food was excellent! I called to see when they would make this recipe again, and they confirmed that they have a lot of eggplant and they would probably make it all week! I was visiting from outer island and happened to come across this place. There's was quite a few construction workers there waiting for their food, so I figured it had to be good. I walked in and the food looked good, but I had a few questions. I asked the younger girl with the fake lashes behind the counter a simple question and she answered very rudely. I shrugged it off and asked another simple question. Without even looking at me she rudely replied, "she'll help you," referring to her co-worker. We had a business trip to Hilo last week...we were hungry and found Hiro's Place. The food definitly doesn't compare to Honolulu's mom and pops. They give a lot for your meal but no taste. I had the chicken katsu didn't finish my plate. The chicken katsu tasted strange like old grease no flavor or freshness nor any seasonings. The fried rice was not the best. We will be coming back for another business trip and we will not be eating at Hiro's Place again. Definitly do not reccomend. read more

EATING AND WAITING HERE IS NOT WORTH IT!!!!!! Customer service was absolutely horrible, workers looked confused and had no idea what they were doing. I've worked in the local fast food industry before and have never seen worse service than today at Hiro's. It doesn't help that while there's a line of people waiting to order/waiting for food, that a woman from the back comes out and doesn't help her workers or customers in line, but helps a "friend" or "regular" by taking his order RIGHT after he walked in, then handed him free food for him while he waited for his food that to me was unpaid for!!! He walked straight out!! And while being rung up the cashiers did not know prices and were ringing up other people while we were paying, they did not know the exact price, and also giving multiple different prices and not offering a itemized receipt. How do I know what I am paying for?!! And upon receiving our food we realized it was cold and it didn't make this experience any better. I'm not sure how my wife and I heard about this place, but we did, and gave it a try. We went there for a quick breakfast on the way out to Volcanoes NP. Not much to look at, but definitely a crowd. Seating is outdoors at picnic tables. Ordering food is cafeteria style, and there's a line of locals out the door. We tried one of the Loco Moco's with two fried eggs, fish, rice and gravy. Turned out to be tons of food. The fish was tasty, the eggs good, the rice perfect, and the gravy delicious. Talk about sticking to your ribs. If you're not into appearances give this place a try for locals fare. read more

Arrived home in Hilo on the early morning flight! Stopped and picked up a rental car then decided to head over to Hiro's Place for Ono kine breakfast. As usual there was a line of folks starting their day with breakfast orders to include bentos for later in the day. I was Ono for corn beef hash, eggs over with toast. Then I walked over to KTA to pick up a few items while my wife ordered her breakfast and took care the bill. Back from KTA I was disappointed that the corn beef hash patties were a little bigger than an IKE dollar and 90% potato cause the corn beef was only decoration you could not taste the corn beef at all. Then I realized that it's the younger generation now in control not like before the old timers making sure you got your money's worth of good kine local foods. I gave one star because the eggs over was fine, rice was okay but the hash was a waste of money. I would not ever order corn beef hash because you get less for what you pay for at Hiro's Place plus after you eat there corn beef hash plate you've got to grab a sandwich or something to fill you up!!! Only giving this place a 2-star for their prices and quantity. The chicken katsu was less than desirable..it was cold, not even lukewarm, bland and quite greasy. The Mac salad was just ok. The only enjoyable portion of the meal was the rice. Trying to support the local businesses but would have rather eaten at McDonalds. read more
