Great place for meeting locals, but extremely bad for those trying to manage their cholesterol and fat intake. I must say that the corned beef hash that constitutes part of the breakfast was terrible, but the hot serving line had plenty of tasty things for the savoring. Visiting with some friends and looked up a place to grab some lunch. Found Hiro's and decided to give it a try. I'm so glad we did! The ladies up front were awesome and answered any questions we had. I had the pork adobo and spicy chicken eggplant.. my friend got the pork adobo and pork in a blood sauce. It was all delicious! Love trying new things. Ah, tutu's greasy spoon never fails to please! As far as I'm concerned, there's no better place for breakfast / brunch in Hilo than Hiro's. Sure, people might tell you to go to Cafe 100, Ken's or Kandi's, but just skip 'um. You can get the same fare anywhere else in Hawai'i. Hiro's is a cut above everyone else. It may not be the most aesthetically pleasing, but when it comes to taste, its the winner. Try nori chicken and their fried rice special. Any plate lunch will be satisfying and equally delicious. I really like the variety of food they serve and convenience of serving bentos and breakfast all day! I've recently purchased the breakfast plate (w/ eggs, choice of meat and toast) and the fried rice breakfast plate. Great portions! However, the fried rice was very salty w/ a lot of black pepper. Hiro's has great Bento's and breakfast specials. It's a very casual, order at the counter and dine outside seat- feel kind of place... very Hilo, chillaxen outside, waiting to meet w/ your homies and talk story. It's cheap eats, nice friendly service. The food is good... there are neighboring competitors, but you get more bang for your buck. It's all local kine style foods, servicing all walks of life.. watch out for the birds, they'll come steal whatever falls off your plate. ;p read more

I basically buy the bentos from Hiro's on my way to work. For the price, it's well worth it and it always satisfies my hunger. I usually opt for the $3 bento and sometimes, the $5 bento. Every once in a while, I do select the entrees from the hot server and go for the Roast Pork and Meatballs, no salad... all fried rice. I love it. I also love their Hamburger Steak with the onions and heavy on the gravy. For me... Hiro's is always my lunch place since it's close to my job and very affordable. read more

Good Filipino food, they are open early. My kids love spam so of coarse we had to eat here. The tables are outside the restaurant. It is clean and service is great. The cashiers were fast and efficient. They have a lot of prepared food and ones that are easy to grab and go. I would recommend this place and return as a customer. read more

This place is the culinary equivalent of a dive bar. If you don't know what you're getting into, you may not enjoy it. I, on the other hand, think this place is fantastic. I've lived in Hawaii most of my life, and I can honestly say this place has the best chicken katsu and korean chicken that I've ever had. I'm also extremely picky about my mac salad, and this is one of three places that I've ever been where I'll eat the stuff. I'm still working up the courage to try some of their less common dishes (blood, I'm looking at you), but I'm sure they are great. Their bentos are also really nice, great for grabbing if you're on the go. If I have one complaint about this place, it's the hours. I work 8-5, and if they were open until 6 they would have a lot more of my money. As it stands, I can really only eat here on the weekends. read more

Nice little place to stop and get some food in the Puainako Shopping center. Usually would come here for breakfast & get the fried rice special. The daily specials varies day to day. This is a review that applies strictly if you're ordering more than about a dozen bentos. For the state underwater robotics competition we ordered bentos for our volunteers. We placed the order days in advance, to be picked up at 10am, and they said sure, no problem. We got somebody down there at 10am, and they hadn't even started on them. The order didn't get filled until 11:20am. I ended up having to throw down extra cash to buy pizza to get my volunteer divers fed on time. That is not acceptable. If they aren't competent enough to get the job done, they need to just say so, and not lie. There is no shame in saying "hey, we can't do an order like that." I would not have felt bad about that at all, I would have called Seoul Station or Cham Cham and it would have not been an issue. But to lie like they did, and screw us up that bad, that was messed up. read more

Loved this place. It's super cheap and fast and you get a TON of food. Plate lunch like it should be! I always come here when I'm in Hilo. I love their breakfast! A plate loaded with fried rice two eggs cooked to you liking and a choice of meat(spam, Portuguese sausage, link sausage, bacon or corned beef hash) all for about $4.00. Was I missing something??? Seems like a lot of people really like this place. Nothing looked very appetizing, so we ended up with tempura fish with fried rice and loco moco. The fried rice was good, fish was pretty greasy. Loco moco was pretty much tasteless and bland. Service could be a tad friendlier. read more

This is a local plate lunch style joint putting out some real quality food . They also make the best Katsu in town as well. The Chicken Katsu is super moist and juicy with the perfect amount of exterior crunch and served with a simple and tasty katsu sauce. Their specials change daily and one of my all time favez would have to be the Turkey Tail Adobo. The Turkey Tail is braised for hours in a soy vinegar broth flavored with bay leaf, peppercorn and garlic. The meat is super tender and fatty and that fat adds so much flavor it's ridiculous. I also love their bentos. They're perfect for on the go meals that offer more variety when dining. Their price reasonably and that taste really good too. Hiro's is a definite must and they offer a wide variety of tasty local food so be sure to try it all. They also make a tasty Chicken Papaya Soup, oh my gosh, it's so good. My go to combo when I'm craving that plate lunch fix is a place all fried rice with chicken katsu and fried fish. That's my "can't go wrong because it's too good" dish. I come here often and the food is majority of the time delicious. The girls that work are hit or miss. It would be great to be greeted with a smile and pleasant greeting but for some of these girls it's just too much to ask for. The pork and peas is the best I've ever had and the spare ribs are also delicious. Prices are awesome for the portions given. After my usual Sunday visit to KTA, I decided to stop by on the way to my car after hearing so many good things about this place. It's a small take out kind of place with a steam table that offers about a dozen different entrees and also a menu that you can order from. I decided to try the already made entrees since I had a wagon full of groceries with me. I ordered three, full order plate lunches with fried rice --pork adobo, sweet and sour spare ribs, and chicken katsu. To my surprise, everything, except for the mac salad, was really good. Portions are so huge that we all shared what we had and still could not finish everything. Can't believe that I've never tried this place before. Total cost for all three lunches was $19 and change.
