This is the hotel that we booked for a one night stay to explore main st. Check in was smooth and receptionist was friendly. Room was very basic and did not give the typical comfortable feeling. The bed definitely needs to be changed as it was extremely uncomfortable. Stayed on the second floor and it was loud throughout the night into the early morning. Shower was only able to reach a luke warm temperature and nozzle very low placed. Unless there are some updates.. I don't think we will be returning to this hotel in the future.

Note, this review of the historic Cary House Hotel is part of a larger review on Placerville, CA which is quite the friendly town with nice folks eager to tell you the history of the town as well as how they got there...my full review on Placerville, CA can be found at https://www.wingsdomain.com/placerville-california-aka-hangtown-usa/ (it's too long to post in a single review here) Placerville, CA has the unwanted Western history of lynching by hanging, giving birth to one of the town's name "Hangtown" which still sticks for its shock-value marketing purposes and which also succeeded the town's original name "Dry Diggins" (use your imagination for the reasoning behind this name, you're probably right!) ....which also was succeeded by its eventual current name "Placerville". The historic Cary House Hotel was built by William Cary in 1857 after fire destroyed his first inn, the Placer Hotel. Cary was a prominent businessman in Placerville who also served a term as mayor. We got in town at around 2:00pm while check-in time was at 3:00pm. There were no one at the front desk (this was to be the theme throughout our stay), so we called the number left at the front desk counter and eventually someone came down and told us check-in time is at 3:00pm and the room is not ready (I knew the check-in time but thought like most hotels, early check-ins are ok). No problem. We decided to go across the street to the Placerville Public House restaurant to have a late lunch and a beer after driving 2-1/2 hours from the Bay Area. .....After lunch, we crossed the street back to our hotel at the historic Cary Hotel. Still no one at the front desk, this was about 3:15pm when check-in was 3:00pm. So as I was calling the number on the counter at the front desk, the host came down and asked if we needed help. YES, since after a 2-1/2 hours drive and was denied check-in at 2:00pm and now trying again after the official 3:00pm check-in, I told her I was checking in. Long story short, room is STILL not ready! To be fair, the young girl was very pleasant in her demeanor, and I eventually just attributed the slow actions to understaffing. My eventual observations is that she wears multiple hats, including a hat for cleaning and preparing the rooms with other cleaning staff, though I never saw any other cleaning staff nor any cleaning staff for that matter, but I'll give her/them the benefit of the doubt. Nonetheless, we waited in the lobby for about 10 minutes until our room was ready at about 3:25pm, keep in mind check-in time was 3:00pm. Got our room, it was sparsely furnished, not going to fixate on that, old hotel, that's the experience you paid for! FWIW, the lobby "museum" and its historical atmosphere is what we came to this hotel for, and it didn't disappoint, albeit a relatively small lobby with its limited historical artifacts. Onwards and upwards! 3:40pm-ish, we stepped back out onto Main Street where everything tourisy happens........ An interesting side-story. On that first night as I sat in the hotel lobby around 11:00pm all by myself waiting for someone from the hotel to bring me a bucket of ice (there is no vending machines for ice, it just tells you to contact the front desk for ice), the left upper corner of the victorian couch I was sitting on started to shake and rumble like I was in a minor earthquake but only on that one upper left corner of the couch, as if someone from another world beyond wanted my attention. The couch shook for at least 10 seconds, keep in mind it was late and I was all by myself in the lobby. A young lady finally came down with my bucket of ice so I told her what just happened and asked her about the ghost in the hotel that many around town have talked about. She told me the hotel have a lot of ghosts! And one of them was the hotel bell hop who was on display as a mannequin dressed in bell hop uniform in the lobby right next to the check-in counter and just across from the couch I was sitting on. I told the lady my experience and that I think I just met this bell hop ghost! Maybe the couch was rigged and the shaking was the hotel's gimmick to reinforce the fabled ghost stories to its guests for marketing purposes, but then again, just maybe, I just had the pleasure of meeting one of the hotel's resident ghosts, the bell hop ghost! If you like nostalgia and museums this is a must stay experience. The checkin host was a happy and helpful soul. The two nights we spent in the fourth floor corner room was just fine. The bars and public houses got a bit loud near their 2AM closing time but we enjoyed the patrons serenading us with multiple rounds of "Over the Rainbow" accompanied by a ukulele. The hotel is old and a bit worn but isn't that why you are in Placerville and the historic El Dorado hills? I would pay money just to ride the old elevator. Our family visiting us took turns riding the ancient people lift. Enjoy, laugh and create memories at this historic and quaint brick palace. Make sure to take in the Hardware store up by the town center tower. It may be the BEST hardware store you will ever experience!

My husband got us 2 nights for our anniversary I enjoy historical and possibly haunted hotels. We went to the website and saw the deluxe queen. It had a 4 poster bed and a great space from the pictures. We clicked on "check availability for this room". It happened to be available so we reserved it. I was excited to stay in that particular room. We arrived and checked in. Got our luggage and went into our room. It was not the room we reserved instead we got a plain room with 70's decor, if that. The main area had 2 ugly green chairs and a desk with a modern wicker chair. No coffee table or end tables. Not even a lamp just an overhead bright light. It had a small kitchenette with no utensils or a microwave. The bathroom was off the kitchenette which was a step up and was very modern. The bedroom was plain but the bed was at least comfortable. My husband went to the front desk to ask why we didn't get the room we rented and were told that was all they had. For 199.00 a night we felt like we got a bad deal. Oh and when we went to bed we heard laughing and yelling up until 3 am. Either from the hotel or out on the street it was loud. We made the best of it since it was our anniversary but will not stay there again.

    Urine on the toilet!

The Cary House Hotel is a Historic location and the only place to stay directly in Placerville. We were excited to check out this location in our travel adventures. Stuff went south pretty fast though. The lobby was charming and well kept up, the staff was very nice as well checked in. We headed up to our room on the 3rd floor. The elevator never lines up with any floor it goes to, and it lines up differently every time! The rooms are named we got Poverty Point, room 304. It's a two room suite with a full kitchen. We immediately realized there was nothing in the cabinets. No plates, glasses, utensils, nothing! Just one wine glass and one coffee mug. New refrigerator, no ice trays. My wife goes to use the bathroom and there's urine on the toilet seat! We carry alcohol wipes so we clean that so she can use it. I go to use the house phone and call the desk...The house phone doesn't work! As we come back from dinner we go to unpack a little for our short stay. I'm by the wall and feel tilted. We come to realize the floor is sloping in both rooms from the wall downward into the building so you're looking downhill. The average slope was 7 degrees, but got up to 10 degrees. Due to the warped floor none of the doors would close between rooms or the bathroom. We used the level on an iPhone to measure. There were holes in the walls, the bathroom mirror was dirty. We hoped for the bed to be comfy, nope. Dirty bathroom, warped floor, empty kitchen, bad elevator. Good water pressure, nice staff, how is this place allowed to be occupied? No idea! 1.5 stars (See pics)

RUN! I enjoy staying in historic buildings with their charm and stories...this one is only stories. Dilapidated comes to mind and as advertised does not fit the description. Pros: location, historic, beautiful staircase and maintained lobby, makeup towels for removing, makeup mirror, GREAT WATER PRESSURE Cons: stained carpet everywhere, stuck in the 1970s style, no one available after 8pm if you have an issue, one door didn't lock...at all, the parking is inconvenient and it's dark so if you're traveling alone beware, the whole building slopes to the center and you feel like you're sleeping on your head, furniture looks like it came from a yard sale down the street and inconsistent room to room, and the AC only works 4 months of the year due to old style heating and cooling (see photo). The courtyard is shared with restaurants so you have limited hours and staff are either friendly or unhelpful. The kitchenettes had no silverware or dishes, there were poorly patched holes in the wall, one room had no screens on the windows so you opened them and slept with bugs next to another building where someone can jump in your window, not enough electrical outlets if they hold your plug at all, TVs with no channels if they turn on, well worn mattress and pillows, and there's a funny smell to most rooms when you first walk in and after windows have been closed. The hotel as a whole is in dire need of a remodel and based off other comments I don't expect a refund for checking out earlier than expected due to feeling unsafe and unable to be comfortable sleeping.

I wasn't sure what to expect when we arrived but was pleasantly surprised. Now keep in mind that this IS an old hotel. So don't expect anything super fancy. BUT it really was nice and I think they do their best to keep everything as clean as possible. It's super close to everything and the decor is kept in perfect vintage condition. I hoe stay was stuck on the fact that people probably lived here like a tiny home. Idk why I was stuck on that but I was the entire weekend lol.
