Drinks were sorta watered down. We got a karaoke room and the staff were dismissive and borderline rude. They seemed annoyed that at a karaoke bar there were people drinking and singing. We were invited to a birthday party with around 15 people. We were the first to arrive and if we weren't going to our son's birthday, we would have turned around and left at the entrance. It smelled like a men's urinal that has never been cleaned. The stench was unmistakable, absolutely disgusting. Once you get past the entrance, you walk into a really cool looking industrial dive bar. The looks is the ONLY thing good about this place. It has to be the dirtiest bar I have ever been too, and I enjoy a good dive bar. The floors are grimy and super sticky, the bathrooms were disgusting (TJ has better bathrooms), the private karaoke rooms are equally bad. It's as if the owners found an empty warehouse with left over furniture and said, HEY let's add some bad karaoke equipment and call it a day. Service was ATROCIOUS. The lack of experience and desire in these employees was on a new level. They do win one award from me, for the WORST martini I have ever been served. I didn't even realize you could do that to a Grey Goose Martini, it was bad, and the bartender trying to make a "lemon twist" should have been filmed. There were 10 people watching him attempt this with horrified looks on their faces. Oh get this, all 10 people were waiting for the bartender. Turns out there was another one at the end of the long long bar, but NO ONE including the bartender pointed this out. This is how bad their service is. We had to go get our own drinks from the above mentioned bar, because the server designated to our private "VIP" room couldn't be bothered. The food was OK. The only real saving grace is that because everything is made with rice flour, gluten free people can eat without worry here. The only food item that stood out for me was the fried gizzards, and that's because you rarely find them anywhere. Did we have fun? Yes, only because we were there celebrating our son's birthday and we made it work. If you can read Korean, I am sure you will have no difficulty with working the Karaoke equipment. All the music has an Asian flare to it, with videos to go(?) with the songs, and a different beat than what we would normally associate. Will we be back? I was surprised that I actually like this place! I'm not a fan of the other rice chicken competitor in north county. But this one won me over. First off, it's located inside HIVE. There was no one at the front table so I walked inside towards the bar. It's best if you call in for your order to give at least 30 minutes. We got there in 20 minutes but from the time stamp of when I placed the call to the time on my receipt, it was 35 minutes. Parking here is really bad. It's always packed and the spaces are tiny! We got the Spicy Soy and Sweet & Spicy. Honestly, it doesn't look like the photo based on the color and it wasn't spicy. Couldn't really tell them apart but if I had to guess, one was slightly sweeter than the other. The Sweet & Spicy was like a wet sticky sauce and it was only at the bottom of the box so only parts of the chicken had the sauce. It wasn't evenly distributed. Each box of chicken came with 4oz diced pickled radish. It doesn't come with coleslaw like it says on the menu. The rice flour made it lighter, fluffier, crispier. Usually when it comes to Korean fried chicken, I'm done after two but I ate 3 and they were huge. We got the half. We also got Cajun Fries and tried 3 additional sauces. The honey garlic, sweet & spicy, and angry sauce. It's 4oz for $2 or 2oz for $1. We got the latter. The fries were nothing special. Been here a couple of times for karaoke and it's been a blast! There are plenty of rooms which can be reserved ahead of time. A large room of 20 people costs about $50 per hour which is a pretty good deal imo. There are also snacks and drinks available. The rooms are a bit on the old fashioned side but there is plenty of space available. The one thing I didn't like was that the karaoke machine songs haven't been updated, so there's no new songs from the past 5 years. Also not the most user friendly as the base language is Korean. Booked for a karaoke room here and man, it was not a great experience. The environment itself is very dive bar-y so if that's what you're looking for, go all out. Bathrooms are dirty, rooms seem like they don't get much love. I hate to even say this but service was really, really bad and the food was even worse. Ordered the honey garlic wings (6 pc.) and could barely get through 2 pieces. So oily and the flavor was just not there. Fries were limp & not good. Overpriced for food that I didn't even end up eating. For a Tuesday night, you would expect service to be a little better, considering the place was nearly empty but you could tell the servers/bartenders were either new or truly just didn't want to be there. We were supposed to have a "designated" server for our room and we barely saw her. We sat for a good half hour before we were like "wait, isn't someone supposed to come take our order?" The server ended up letting us know we could text a phone number with our orders. So bizarre. .....18% gratuity/service charge for parties over 6 people for what? There are private rooms for karaoke. These are pretty decent, but when you have a larger function, things can become hectic. We had about a group of 25 during the holidays, and there were a few meals that were not delivered despite waiting over an hour, if not more. The Korean fried chicken has never a mess. Was going to give this place 3 stars for the service BUT Richard (the manager) was very nice and resolved the issue right away. That doesn't always happen. The place itself is awesome. My daughter had the best time at her 16th birthday party. The food is delicious and a pretty good selection of songs. Highly recommend for a party of people who love to sing together. My friends and I were looking for something to do after dinner, and we stumbled upon this spot. The staff was not very attentive and we ended up waiting a while for someone to help us out, even after we approached someone working at the bar for help with getting a room for karaoke. We were finally able to flag someone down, and we got set up in one of the small rooms (as our group was a total of 6). The girl gave us a couple song books that had a wide variety of songs and a couple mics. We were stoked to find a ton of great songs, and dove right into it. Shortly after starting, we went to the bar to order a few soju cocktails to split amongst ourselves. The peach yogurt flavored one was great! We ended up spending a couple of hours here, just drinking, singing and, having a good time. Our only complaints, and reservations about whether or not we would come back, would be that the bathrooms were not very clean or stocked, and the staff was not attentive at all and they were pretty rude. I rented the XL Room for 3 hours for my family. When reserving online, it says reserve for 3 hours and get 1 extra hour for free. When I arrived, they told me that I booked it for 4 hours total meaning pay for all 4 hours. We ended up leaving at the third hour to make sure we only paid for 3 hours total. The verbiage is tricky online, so be careful when reserving a time slot. We had our reservation at 1:30pm - 4:30pm. Online it advertises that in the karaoke rooms you can order food and drinks. However, when we arrived, we were told that they don't start serving food until 3pm. Not to mention they have a rule where you cannot bring outside food and beverages inside. The first 2 hours of our 3 hour reservation, my family were starving and didn't have anything to eat. Some went next door to grab a quick bite. We ordered food at 3pm and received the food around 3:40pm. Poor advertising and planning on the establishment itself. If you have a reservations, bring staff in to cater to the people who are paying for what they thought would be top quality service. Put it in writing online that food starts at a certain time for karaoke rentals so people are aware and know beforehand. Especially when you have all of these strict rules and no refund policies. The food was mid and alright too. Nothing special. There were only 10 of us and we purchased the XL room for the better experience, and boy were we wrong. The music options were limited, the karaoke style of music/beats were cheap and weak, and the sound system was all over the place. The microphones stink and the table was sticky. I hosted my husbands 40th birthday here recently and couldn't be happier! We had a private room for about 30 people. The music, drinks and food were awesome. We worked with Richard Park who is the manager and he was super thorough, professional and helpful. There was even a discrepancy with the bill that he took care of immediately. I'm torn here, because we did have a great time, but there's so much room for improvement with this place. The open bar/lounging area is great. Huge front bar and plenty of seating, which is really nice. The staff were all really friendly and accommodating. However, the private karaoke rooms are incredibly dated and the karaoke machine isn't very user friendly. Some of the songs chosen wouldn't ever play, and then random songs no one ever chose would start to play. The bathrooms are real rough shape. The door to the women's room wouldn't open/close, it was stuck halfway in between. They were missing a toilet seat on one, and one of the sinks was broken. They could stand to put a little effort into keeping things nice and clean and updated in what would've been an otherwise fantastic experience. read more

This review is specifically for the karaoke experience at Hive. While the karaoke entertainment was satisfactory, the overall experience was not very good. Note: The service staff at Hive were extremely friendly and attentive. They went out of their way to make sure we had a fun night. So, the negative review does not reflect on the service staff. First, the karaoke booths were old-looking, and the temperature hot and uninviting. Furthermore, the noise the adjoining nightclub was thundering loud and the noise bleed into the karaoke room at more than acceptable sound levels. Second, the karaoke system itself was old, glitchy, and just not very good. Songs would start and then stop suddenly after a verse or a chorus. Even after we asked the staff to reboot the unit, at least more than half of all the songs we picked would just stop without warning. The evening turned into us guessing who's song would get cut next. When we asked the staff to investigate, they called the technician, who told us that they could not do anything about the issue. Additionally, the song selection of the karaoke booths were old and didn't have much selection of newer songs. We guessed that the catalog was at best 5 years old- but probably older. The control module was entirely in Korean, and while some buttons were labeled- not all the controls were. When we discovered the pitch to some songs were odd, we had to spend at least 15 minutes randomly testing buttons to see which one controlled raising or lowering the pitch (key) of the songs. Thirdly, the establishment's restrooms were absolutely disgusting. The women's restrooms were dirty and unclean. The men's room door was propped open for unknown reasons. There were pools of urine all over the floor near the urinals. The sink had water splashed everywhere. There was no dispensable soap, and the paper towels were soaking wet and just left as rolls on the sink without a clean disowning machine. All in all, the only redeeming quality of the karaoke entertainment at Hive was the excellent service staff. They did everything possible to try to help us have a fun night. But you could tell they didn't have the technical support or resources to fix the technical issues with the karaoke machines I would not recommend going here for karaoke. read more

In a word, Hive is awesome! I didn't get to try the golf this time, I got to try plenty of the amazing food though, and rent out the karaoke lounge. The food was amazing, with some of the best seasonings and sauces for chicken I have ever had. Some of the drinks were a little pricier than normal, but the quality was good. Other than the alcohol prices, my only other critique for improvement would be to allow for additional options for karaoke outside of renting just the one room, and also to update the music selection with more robust and current options. I've been to HIVE before for the drinks and music but I haven't been in a while. PLUS I've never tried their food...in the DAY time... on a TUESDAY! I must say, I was not disappointed! It seems like they recently renovated. They got rid of their dance floor and added more tables. The music playin was poppin, so Im not sure how that would work on a weekend and during the nights when people are drinking and want to dance. Their menu wasn't HUGE but they had a good selection. We ordered the popcorn chicken, kimchi fried rice- which was during Happy Hour- chicken curry with rice, and tried the fish tacos, of course for Taco Tuesday and it was actually really good! The kimchi fried rice was pretty small so I'm not sure if that was the happy hour size but I'm def gonna order the regular next time to see the difference. I wish I ordered it with an egg but it was still so good!! The popcorn chicken was alrighhhht, I've had better from your local Tap Ex. The chicken curry was also really good, a really good portion- we didn't finish all of it. Lastly, the tacos weren't that bad either- just REALLY small. But I believe they were only a $1 so that made sense. The service was okay. There was prob 4 different parties with 2+ people, not crazy busy and it seemed like 1 or 2 servers. She basically just did her job- took our orders and gave us our food. I had asked for some condiments and she never came back. They give you a pitcher of water so she didn't need to come back for refills or anything and she didn't check back in with us. That's probably why I opted out of a 5 star review. They a limited selection for flavors but the flavors were all great still. I bought passion fruit, pineapple, and peach yogurt. The food was ok. The kimchi rice wasn't too good, I have tasted better. It was pretty sour and I had asked for spam in my rice and never got it. The surf and turf fries was kind of like carne asada fries but the shrimp in it was so tiny.. it was like tiny frozen shrimp lol. The size of a dime. The chicken wings would have to be my favorite. Flavorful and crunchy! They have a karaoke room as well and it was pretty fun. It was kind go muggy and hot since we had a lot of people.. I had to leave the room a few times to get fresh air lol. The service here was ok. One of my co-workers dropped her glass and no one bothered to clean it up. When I had informed one of the staff, she just said ok and never cleaned it up and then about 15 minutes later she put a caution wet sign over it and didn't sweep up the broken glass.. someone wearing open toe shoes could have definitely cut! Celebrated my birthday here at Hive. We started in the main room had a few drinks and ordered some food: bulgogi fries, fried chicken, fried rice. The food is so so, I was expecting better tasting food and usually every Korean joint we eat at the food is good. My first drink was a crown and Coke the cup was mostly ice but it was a decent pour as I got a good taste of the whiskey. The big VIP room is a nice sized room for up to 50 people it was big enough to hold all of my friends and it's $70 per hour not bad. Pretty simple decor but the sound system is pretty crappy, I'd expect to at least have a clean sound setup maybe with some decent bass for that big of a room. DJ on Friday is dope playing old school hip hop and R&B. Definitely a go to spot for drink, dance and karaoke. read more

Fun time at this modern, spacious, colorful and fun place. I did not know what to expect when helping organize a gathering with people from work recently. I have not had karaoke in San Diego for ages, so I had no idea was was 'in' and what not. I was impressed how big the facilities are, with plenty of rooms of various sizes where people can order food to be served inside the rooms. Food was not my thing, fast food type but was perfect to share with my new friends. We had a great time singing songs to videos that were so funny because they were young Asian boys and girls in them and their presence had nothing to do in many times with the song itself. We did not know what the deal was, but it was surely fun. Another surprise was to see that the book to choose music from is huuuuge and there where a couple of pages dedicated to Spanish music. My friends and I came here on a Wednesday night for a reservation and the main restaurant was not crowded at all. It did take a bit for a server to check us in to our karaoke room but it looked like she was the only person working the floor at the time so it seems like they just need another staff member to help. However, the girl was very kind and taught us how to use the karaoke program. It is very similar to all of the other karaoke places I've been to and the song selection is pretty extensive. They have a pretty good food and drink menu as well and the food came out only like 10-15 minutes after we ordered which was great! The food itself was actually very tasty and I enjoyed it a lot. They are WAY understaffed and you're limited with time because of the room rental. Went on Friday at 6:30pm. You'd think there would be more than one bartender. Terrible customer service and management. We came here with a large party to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday with karaoke, and the bouncer guy bent my girlfriend's license so hard it cracked. That was a bad start to the night, and he was entirely unapologetic saying it was totally fine. Thinking that was both unacceptable and incompetent, we spoke with the manager after, and he was also highly dismissive and unapologetic. We received a free drink but I would've preferred a heartfelt apology. I have no clue why the manager was so unapologetic and abrasive at my complaint. We were enjoying ourselves singing karaoke when 30 minutes before our scheduled end time, our microphones just stopped working. We called for assistance and no one showed up for about ten minutes even though the place was empty. At that point, the server informed us we could get a slightly prorated rate by leaving early and we decided to call it for the night. The manager checked us out and gave us half off our last hour -- that might have been acceptable if he actually apologized. I told him our microphones stopped working and rather than apologize, he said something along the lines of: "Yeah, I know. That's why I gave you a discount." Did not hear any type of sorry for the inconvenience and disappointment that caused. The icing on the cake was when I asked if gratuity was included in the bill and the manager said no. Gratuity was included. Luckily, my girlfriend caught it before I tipped extra. The manager needs to learn how to apologize, and the ownership at this place needs to seriously review its customer service policies. It's highly upsetting that a night of enjoyment started and ended with negative experiences caused by Hive's lack of customer service. Frankly, none of the hiccups would have been so bad if they handled customer complaints with a little bit of grace. Also, just a general word of caution for out of towners, this place doesn't know what out-of-state licenses look like. Absolutely terrible experience. My group and I were so excited to visit this place for a celebration and were greatly disappointed. All of the employees who assisted us constantly looked like we were a bother to them and every question was an annoyance. We ordered food and waited over an hour only to receive HALF of one person's order out of the six of us that were there. We still waited a little longer and kept asking for updates before finally deciding to call it quits. Come to find out, we were CHARGED the extra time in the karaoke room that we spent waiting for the food! After asking to speak with the manager, we were met with more of an annoyed demeanor. I came in with my family and we booked a room so we can karaoke. The ambiance of the room was actually really cool! There was lighting similar to strobe lights with patterns and a darker toned lighting that felt calming that really made me want to belt out some Adele. There was a massive song list that ranges from the oldies to semi current hits. However, it is a rather fixed system so there weren't any super new songs within the past two years to choose from, but it did the job! The scoring system wasn't functioning correctly but we were able to make due without that, we weren't planning on auditioning for American Idol or anything. The chicken that we got were decent. The batter was super crispy and they have the option of choosing either a half or whole chicken. We chose half chickens so that we can try a multiple flavors at once. The batter for the chicken seemed to be a little overwhelming, but it wasn't too the point where the chicken was all batter, it was still delicious. Came here late night with my family, to catch up, sing and eat! We got lucky and got pretty much last call for the room at night. Really sad I forgot our servers name because we he was amazing! We got about 4 orders of chicken, honesty I believe they are all really yummy! The chickens are just enough breaded and enough chicken! Fries were also delicious. We are big fans of wings and fries! The sauce was a extra charge, and wasn't that impressed. We didn't even touch it. Our server made us a spicy sauce and honestly it was amazing we had him make us two haha. The kareoke songs I felt like didn't have a lot of song options, but the options of songs I usually sing at least. We picked lots of throwbacks.
