HJem A.M. was such a unique and unexpected experience in Custer, SD. We decided we needed to try it because we dined at their sister restaurant, Skogen Kitchen and we're blown away. We are happy we made time to visit HJem as well. We started with the deviled eggs, I could not believe the amount of different flavors that existed in one bite. If you like smoked salmon they are a must try. My husband had the French toast and he enjoyed it. It was a very rich dish with a solid mixture of savory and sweet. I had the chicken and waffles and they were awesome. The dish is a huge portion, I probably ate 1/4 of it. Definitely a dish to share, and one I would order again. The main reason I am not giving this place five stars is it seemed odd to me that they have such elevated brunch dishes culinary wise, but they don't offer espresso, lattes, etc. Must visit if in Custer! read more

I used to travel to Custer frequently as a child on family vacations. Recently I went back and ran into a quaint breakfast restaurant. Hjem AM. I'm used to walking into a restaurant in Custer for breakfast knowing whatever I was ordering wouldn't exactly be the best. Until I walked into Hjem. Custer needed this. Not only were the staff friendly and efficient, but the food was incredible. I was able to thank the chef and his lovely fiancé that works the front of house. We loved our 3 days/nights in Custer and HJem AM became our go-to place for breakfast all 3 mornings. Business owners in Custer are authentically friendly and look out for each other. The menu is unexpected - things you'd never think to put together make up absolutely superb dishes that will cater to every palate. All of the flavors are perfectly balanced and the dishes perfectly cooked, and the staff and owners are exceedingly friendly and great to talk to. This restaurant was highly recommended by another restaurant owner. I really wanted to love this place & right from the beginning it looked wonderful. Then we got our breakfasts which looked pretty good but my husband ordered eggs over medium & they were very over easy & some of the potatoes were bit under cooked. My husband was fine finishing his breakfast but we thought to mention it so they could be more careful next time. We told our waiter & later a lady came over to tell us that she was giving us a discount. It turned out to be a $1 discount. First of all we weren't looking for a discount, we just wanted to let them know so they can improve. The $1 discount was more insulting to us! The total bill was over $40 & we were happy to pay for it. But if you're going to give a discount then make it at least 10%. Also for a nice finer breakfast place... they need to find a better coffee. This place has the potential of being a great place. read more

The owner is very unprofessional. My family went out for breakfast and in the beginning we're loving it. We didn't have a reservation but we're seated on the patio. My bf ordered BOTTOMLESS mimosas and I had a hard ice coffee. My son had chocolate milk lol. Our food was amazing and that pains me to say because the owner left such a horrendous taste in my mouth. Promptly after taking our last bite our server brought our check. It was 80 and I tipped 20. Our server stopped filling up my bf mimosas after we payed. I still had over half of my hard coffee so I informed him we were staying longer to drink and asked if he would give pour some more champagne. He gave my bf the rest of the bottle that he had and said polish this off and walked away. There was very little in the bottle and my bf still had over half over his orange juice that they bring to mix your own mimosas. The server then came back and filled up everyone's mimosas but his. So I went to talk with the owner. She brought out some more champagne and then asked me for my ID. I was caught off guard as we had already been drinking and I wasn't even the one drinking mimosas as I'm allergic to orange juice. I gave it to her and she went back inside. Again the server went and poured everyone else's mimosas and not my bfs so I asked him if he could get some champagne. His response was let me go see and then he comes back again without saying anything to us and fills everyone's AGAIN. So I went inside to speak with the own again where she informed me I was too drunk and that she had people waiting for the table so we needed to leave. I had one hard coffee I was not in the slightest drunk or even tipsy. I asked for my tip back and left. read more
