Welcome Hjem. What a find in the quaint town of Custer lies a special breakfast spot that shouldn't be missed. We arrived at 9 am on a Saturday and were greeted warmly by the owner. Hjem is a smaller restaurant so make sure you have a reservation. The coffee is hot and the food is unexpected. We started with the tuna deviled eggs that were amazing! Then we split Custers last meal with a pancake side. The bacon and sausage were amazing. The pancake was light and fluffy. We really enjoyed the warm hospitality and amazing food. We will for sure be back !

Recommended to us by a local after mentioning looking for a healthy breakfast. Norwegian inspired; very different; very fresh and super friendly. I had custer's last breakfast and it was great; but husband's quiche was ‍.

A 5 star breakfast restaurant in downtown Custer, SD? Absolutely!! With exceptional service, the best decaf coffee that ever crossed my lips, fresh/creative menu selections and co- owners that interact and genuinely show their appreciation for patrons. In fact, there's a sign on the wall of the entree in Norwegian that says "welcome home" and they live up to that spirit. We started with deviled eggs topped with salmon to share and then we each got an order of avocado toast. The flavors are amazing - proving that even the simplest dishes can be made into a spectacular culinary achievement. Thank you Camilla for being an amazing host!

Unexpected and interesting menu. I was solo dining and so only ordered one thing, the WallEye and it was delicious! The mint in yogurt on the plate was a great flavor compliment, even with the egg ... wasn't sure what I would think of that. Great coffee and they kept it coming, and this may be unimportant to some, but for those of us who need the jumpstart it's a vital lifeline :) I'm not going to downrate for this, but there was one negative: the fish was overcooked, but not so much so that ruined, just far drier than it should be optimally. This happens quickly. I assume Chef was distracted. If I lived in the area, I would revisit, but I was just traveling through from Bay Area of California where this restaurant would fit in easily in a high end area due to the quality. So if you're local and have t been, change that. If you're traveling through treat yourself to a breakfast far above the average fare & quality. One last note on the "home" goal: the staff and owner were all notably friendly and cheerful treating customers with warmth.

3.5 stars. Coffee was decent. The staff were moderately friendly, except the young lady who took care of us. She was quite friendly. If ypu are looking for a Starbucks (mostly milk) type latte, this place is not for you. Latte was "Euro-style," as I like to call it. The coffee was good. My wife thought it a bit acidic. The price was the downer...$7.50. That is the most expensive coffee drink i have had in my life. If the price had been more palatable, Iwould have given the place 4 stars.

Great little brunch place in Custer that is the sister restaurant to Skogan. Definitely make reservations cause they are popular for a reason. Got seated promptly at my reservation time and the staff explained the menu and all the potential add one and specials. I ended up with a sweet and savory combination, which ended up being a lot of food. Rice pudding (5/5) great texture a with just right sweetness. The berries and almonds added interesting components. Chicken and pancakes (4/5) - decently spicy with the franks hot sauce and crispy. Pancakes were good size. Hashbrowns were very crispy. Overall fun brunch place! Prices are a bit steep for the town, but there's not much else to eat around here so it works out that you spend it all one place. :)

My partner and I were visiting SD and WY for a national park trip and stopped here for breakfast one morning. After a severely depressing meal near the Badlands the night before, I needed a win. We had the most exquisite breakfast at Hjem A.M. Visiting from a food city, I usually need to manage my food expectations when traveling to smaller towns, but that wasn't the case here at all! Our server was unbelievably nice, gave fantastic recommendations, and was super attentive. The inside was cute, but we opted to sit on the patio and it was great. We got the rice pudding, pancakes with fried chicken, and their standard breakfast with eggs and sausage. All were complete hits. The chicken was juicy, breading was fantastic. Their sausage was fantastic, tasted artisanal or something. Rice pudding was sweet, cold, and refreshing. I simply cannot say enough wonderful things about this establishment.

The hostess/owner was so nice. Her husband is also the chef! She offers you to look at the menu before sitting down as their food is a bit different. Do not miss out. Everything was so good. Service was great. Plenty of parking around the restaurant.

A side of bacon, rice pudding, and avacado toast.

Popular place with a wide variety of choices for dinner--friendly and attentive service (if you…read moredon't see your server, ask another--they clearly work well as a team) and interesting decor. Starter and food, drinks, etc., are brought promptly to the table. This is exceptional in a highly popular tourist area. The food is good but could use a little improvement--the grilled mahi-mahi was good, but a little on the dry sauce and definitely needed a sauce. A couple of the dishes did have sauces, but fish is why most Creole restaurants like Brennan's will serve a sauce on the side, or a topping with butter such as Trout Almandine. It doesn't have to be a fancy sauce--the option of good ol' tartar sauce works. The grilled vegetables also needed a little more butter and seasoning. Carrots are good on their own; broccoli and cauliflower need a little cheese or butter and some seasoning to be loved. The IPA (Long John) was excellent. The beer cheese dip and soft pretzels were to die for; the chardonnay was passable. A great choice for dining in a VERY heavily traveled tourist destination. Get there early--it starts filling up fast and all the restaurants around Mount Rushmore close at 9.

The ambience, the food, the service was outstanding if we lived in Custer, South Dakota, we would be here quite often. Thank you Mount Rushmore brewing for a great time.

My husband had the native American fry bread taco and I had a grilled chicken sandwich with fries and we both had a Michelob ultra Alex was our server and was super friendly and efficient They also play Fun old timey music - stuff I haven't heard since the 70s and early 80s My chicken sandwich was tasty, they added pepper jack for an extra dollar and it also had pickles, lettuce, and tomato. My husband thought the fried bread was good, but wasn't a huge fan of the taco meat as it tasted just like Taco Bell, lol. An accessible spot to sample these dishes is at the Laughing Water Restaurant at Crazy Horse Memorial. Here, the menu features American comfort food with a Native bent. Briefly, Crazy Horse Memorial is an in-progress mountainside sculpture depicting the eponymous Lakota warrior. Thus far, only Crazy Horse's face and hand have been completed, but the titanic scale of the sculpture dwarfs even Mt Rushmore. One of the best views of the sculpture is from the museum complex, including select tables within the attached Laughing Water Restaurant. The expansive, banquet hall-esque dining space features polished wood motifs across the walls, ceilings, tables, and chairs. Every inch of wall space is occupied by windows, Native American artwork, or memorabilia related to Crazy Horse. Austere, warmly lit chandeliers complement the ample natural light. The floors are lined with thin brown carpeting that proactively hides most stains. Background music plays quietly throughout the space. My party arrived for early lunch, aiming to dine before an incoming tour group. Our proactivity was rewarded with an unrivaled view of Crazy Horse from a secluded secondary dining room. We opted to share a smattering of entrees and desserts. Notably, multiple plates featured Indian fry bread, a disk of deep-fried dough somewhere between naan and funnel cake. My favorite dish was the Native American Taco -- fry bread topped with ground beef, refried beans, and all of the other Americanized taco fixings. The hearty combination was a half-step above the standard, at-home "taco night" creation. I also enjoyed the rich and salty Tatanka Stew, loaded with buffalo and vegetables, then sprinkled with shredded cheese. The only disappointing entree was the 1/3 lb Buffalo Smash Burger; the "smashed" patty lost all of its juice and ended up dry and flavorless. Of desserts, I couldn't get enough of the Kuchen. Derived from the German word for "cake", this custard-y tart is the official dessert of South Dakota. Laughing Horse's version featured strawberry rhubarb in its rich custard filling. Meanwhile, the Wajape (a Native berry sauce) was mostly indistinguishable from the compote paired with pancakes at any roadside diner. The service was friendly and attentive, and the prices were reasonable. Across all dishes, the portions were generous, and the food felt homemade (rather than fast-food quality or overtly upscale). The Native influences across the dishes were clearly watered down, but the food was palatable, and the views were unparalleled. Considering that we were a captive audience, Laughing Water exceeded expectations and offered a glimpse into native South Dakotan cuisine without breaking the bank.
