This is how a restaurant should be. If I'm going to spend the egregious amount of money to eat out in 2026, it should be better than what I can cook at home. Too often do I go out to eat and spend $30+ to eat bland, overprocessed garbage food. This place clearly cares are but their quality. First - the menu items are unique and everything looked delicious. The quality of the food was top notch. The Eggs Benedict was pretty dang close to perfection. I'm a snob when it comes to eggs Benedict and it's soooo nice to find a place that actually does it right. They clearly made their own hollandaise and the eggs were poached perfectly. The service was excellent as well - the waitress was always checking in on me and she was very warm and friendly. Same with all of the other staff I've encountered. Honestly it's a little pricey but youre only going to spend an additional $5-10 per person over the greasy spoon diner down the street and it's wayyyy worth it. The restaurant was also very clean and inviting. I'm so sick of going to restaurants and the menus are dirty, the bathroom is disgusting, and the ambiance is dingy. Fresh oysters for breakfast...in South Dakota? Yes, please! My wife and I stumbled upon this gem on a recent trip through the Black Hills. A note about the restaurant from their website: Erik and Camillia opened Hjem A.M. in 2022 with one goal in mind: bring amazing breakfast food to the Black Hills. The food's focus is seasonality and is inspired by Scandinavian/American flavors. "Hjem" means home in Danish. Camillia and Erik found their home in Custer and want to be your home in the morning. Everything was divine. We wanted to sample the menu so we ordered "The Bob" (pancakes with lemon cream and lingonberry), Lobster eggs Benedict which they were out of unfortunately so the gave us some oysters as an apology. Their quiche of the day was a Mexican inspired elote style with a flaky crust and delightful crema, topped with some pickled onions. Their hollandaise was likely the best I've ever had. The accompanying potatoes and hash browns were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Ashly ordered a sausage patty that included a few chili flakes to wake up the tastebuds. I'd mentioned Ashly's birthday and they brought out a birthday treat - rice pudding topped with dried apricots and granola. And a candle on the side. We certainly felt at home at this lovely place. Welcome Hjem. What a find in the quaint town of Custer lies a special breakfast spot that shouldn't be missed. We arrived at 9 am on a Saturday and were greeted warmly by the owner. Hjem is a smaller restaurant so make sure you have a reservation. The coffee is hot and the food is unexpected. We started with the tuna deviled eggs that were amazing! With exceptional service, the best decaf coffee that ever crossed my lips, fresh/creative menu selections and co- owners that interact and genuinely show their appreciation for patrons. In fact, there's a sign on the wall of the entree in Norwegian that says "welcome home" and they live up to that spirit. We started with deviled eggs topped with salmon to share and then we each got an order of avocado toast. Unexpected and interesting menu. I was solo dining and so only ordered one thing, the WallEye and it was delicious! The mint in yogurt on the plate was a great flavor compliment, even with the egg ... wasn't sure what I would think of that. Great coffee and they kept it coming, and this may be unimportant to some, but for those of us who need the jumpstart it's a vital lifeline :) I'm not going to downrate for this, but there was one negative: the fish was overcooked, but not so much so that ruined, just far drier than it should be optimally. This happens quickly. I assume Chef was distracted. If I lived in the area, I would revisit, but I was just traveling through from Bay Area of California where this restaurant would fit in easily in a high end area due to the quality. So if you're local and have t been, change that. If you're traveling through treat yourself to a breakfast far above the average fare & quality. One last note on the "home" goal: the staff and owner were all notably friendly and cheerful treating customers with warmth. read more

If ypu are looking for a Starbucks (mostly milk) type latte, this place is not for you. Latte was "Euro-style," as I like to call it. The coffee was good. My wife thought it a bit acidic. The price was the downer...$7.50. That is the most expensive coffee drink i have had in my life. If the price had been more palatable, Iwould have given the place 4 stars. read more

Great little brunch place in Custer that is the sister restaurant to Skogan. Definitely make reservations cause they are popular for a reason. Got seated promptly at my reservation time and the staff explained the menu and all the potential add one and specials. I ended up with a sweet and savory combination, which ended up being a lot of food. Rice pudding (5/5) great texture a with just right sweetness. The berries and almonds added interesting components. Chicken and pancakes (4/5) - decently spicy with the franks hot sauce and crispy. Pancakes were good size. Hashbrowns were very crispy. Overall fun brunch place! Prices are a bit steep for the town, but there's not much else to eat around here so it works out that you spend it all one place. :) read more

True to the name, with one visit this became our morning home. We booked a table for the very next morning. It's a small, spare interior in the Scandinavian style. Cute little touches nod to both its Danish roots and its Custer location. Any additional charm you may need is sure to be provided by Cami, who, according to local legend, melts local snows just by walking outside and chatting with them. I might have made that part up but it wouldn't surprise me. Point being, she and her husband, Erik, have created an inviting, welcoming haven in which hospitality and deliciousness compete for top billing, with the winner being you. The food is top shelf, including such mixed delights as Lobster Benedict on my wife's side of the table and Mojoe (pancakes with fried chicken, hot sauce, and maple syrup) on mine. Loved them both! My partner and I were visiting SD and WY for a national park trip and stopped here for breakfast one morning. After a severely depressing meal near the Badlands the night before, I needed a win. We had the most exquisite breakfast at Hjem A.M. Visiting from a food city, I usually need to manage my food expectations when traveling to smaller towns, but that wasn't the case here at all! Our server was unbelievably nice, gave fantastic recommendations, and was super attentive. The inside was cute, but we opted to sit on the patio and it was great. We got the rice pudding, pancakes with fried chicken, and their standard breakfast with eggs and sausage. All were complete hits. The chicken was juicy, breading was fantastic. Their sausage was fantastic, tasted artisanal or something. Rice pudding was sweet, cold, and refreshing. I simply cannot say enough wonderful things about this establishment. read more

That said, all that frustration was totally worth it! We had the best time with waiter, Eric, and did enjoy a Sunday morning breakfast with the bottomless Mimosas. There was a freak rain storm as we were finishing up, like DOWNPOUR (and I live in Florida, so it was something else if I'm talking about it). Anyway, while we waited for a break in the weather, our server told us about HJem AM. We immediately made a reservation for Friday morning. Good. God. Just as Skogen Kitchen is a must do for foodies who find them selves in South Dakota, HJem AM is a MUST for breakfast. If I had known about it earlier, I would have eaten there more than I did. We got a few items to share. The rice pudding was epic. My husband ordered the Japanese french toast and was thrilled with it. Ice cream for breakfast! _A grown up's dream come true. I ordered the Morning Walleye. Fish for breakfast? OH YES. And the table agreed, my dish was the best one. It was so. freaking. amazing. I am still dreaming of that walleye. Everything about our breakfast here was excellent. My boyfriend and I came here during a road trip, and it was the best meal we'd had all week. I ordered the deviled eggs, which came with a plate of 5, and I easily could have ordered another plate. The little touch of honey they drizzled over everything at the end balanced out all of the flavors. My boyfriend ordered the avocado toast and raved about it. We also finished with a stack of their pancakes called The Bob; they came with a lemon cream and lingonberries. There was no need for syrup, they were perfection as is. Additionally, the cafe is small and cozy, and even though they tend to get busy and we didn't have a reservation, we never felt rushed. Our server was a delight, and when she found out I'm Minnesotan she had the owner come and chat me up as well. The owner recommended the other Scandinavian restaurant in town for dinner, and we immediately made a reservation. We were greeted immediately upon arrival (sadly not common recently) and only had to wait a short while for our table to be ready. Early November so a reservation may have not been needed but there aren't many tables so we're glad we did. We started with the deviled eggs which included smoked salmon - a lovely combination! Coffee was very good and the gurgling water jars on each table was a great touch! I had the walleye and my husband the quiche. I'm not usually a fish for breakfast girl but where else can you get that so I gambled. Glad I did! Portion size was nice-I was concerned it would have been a huge portion of fish but was enough for me with plenty to share with hubs. The food is amazing. I had the fluffiest scrambled eggs I ever had, garlic roasted potatoes, wow. Hash browns were so crispy and bacon was perfect. The pancakes were light and fluffy served with mascarpone cream and beautiful housemaid jam. However, the flavors are complex and absolutely scrumptious...which is not a "simple" accomplishment. The owners have amazing food and a great atmosphere with friendly attentive service. Make your reservations because you don't want to chance not getting a table by walking in! You can also order to-go via text! Score! We had the strawberry rice pudding, Custer's Last Stand, and the eggs Benedict. They make their sausage in house and the flavors were excellent. The bacon was some of the best bacon I'd ever had. The rice pudding with the fruit and honey and almonds had a contrasting saltiness that had us salivating for more when it was gone. (No seriously we almost ordered a second one!) The coffee was great with real cream too! We love the "gurgle pots" too. Such a fun touch. read more

I've been here multiple times since they opened and it's been very good every time. Great service, delicious food, a very nice breakfast spot vibe. I keep trying to order new things when I go, my faves so far are the Mojo, the Quiche, and the Walleye! We arrived as a family with two kids to have breakfast (after doing a lot of research on the best places to eat in Custer) and instead of being seated the hostess told us us to look at the menu since we had kids. The menu had pancakes which I thought would be fine for the kids, but we didn't feel welcomed since we had kids. We decided to leave since it didn't feel welcoming and ate somewhere else in Custer. Unfortunately my son ended up with food poisoning from the restaurant we switched to instead. I'm sure the food here is great, but I didn't appreciate not feeling welcomed and then ultimately ending up dealing with food poisoning since we switched restaurants. Maybe next time welcome families and let them decide after they sit down if it's a good fit. read more

I don't leave many reviews, but this place deserves 5 stars! The staff were very friendly and accommodating, and were able to seat us on the patio on a busy Sunday without reservations. It was a bit windy, so they gave our entire party blankets - what a thoughtful touch! The food was absolutely amazing, from the salmon deviled eggs to the Hawaiian French toast! My wife had the walleye with bacon hash, which was also delicious! We were tempted to try some of the more expensive and rare items like the Russian caviar or the lobster eggs Benedict - maybe next time. HJem A.M. was such a unique and unexpected experience in Custer, SD. We decided we needed to try it because we dined at their sister restaurant, Skogen Kitchen and we're blown away. We are happy we made time to visit HJem as well. We started with the deviled eggs, I could not believe the amount of different flavors that existed in one bite. If you like smoked salmon they are a must try. My husband had the French toast and he enjoyed it. It was a very rich dish with a solid mixture of savory and sweet. I had the chicken and waffles and they were awesome. The dish is a huge portion, I probably ate 1/4 of it. Definitely a dish to share, and one I would order again. The main reason I am not giving this place five stars is it seemed odd to me that they have such elevated brunch dishes culinary wise, but they don't offer espresso, lattes, etc. Must visit if in Custer! read more
