Yelp suggested this restaurant. It was the first fail on our entire 2 week trip! I ordered the walleye. It was terrible. It had no seasoning and no breading. Menus states lightly breaded. It was cooked well but the taste was terrible. Added salt and pepper and lemon which still didn't help. My husband had the noodle dish with shrimp- it was an odd texture to the sauce - maybe a flour base. Not much flavor to his meal either. I would never go back. The atmosphere was great! Nicely decorated. As far as service- we felt like we were ignored most of our dinner time. I had to walk up to the bar to ask the server for the salt and pepper. read more

Ambiance is good. Over two years and two experiences, I've had great service (recently) and poor service (last summer, 2025). Service was great this year but I was disappointed with the food. I ordered a chicken Caesar salad ($13 salad + $6 for the chicken) and it was less than what I could've made at home. To charge $13 for the quality of the Caesar salad felt audacious. This place was in walking distance to where we stayed (EO Bungalows) in Custer. We sat at the cozy bar and were greeted with a giant bottle of ice cold water. Our server was Everald and he was so friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious (elk mushrooms, burger, Caesar salad w/salmon and carrot cake for dessert). Sacramento, CA visitors... Where to start? The ambience and atmosphere was very nice. Our server was attentive and polite. We were a group of seven and he accommodated our request to separate our bill. Very friendly and the food is absolutely delicious. We started with elk stuffed mushrooms and walleye fish cakes. Both were phenomenal. We all had something different for dinner including the walleye fillet, mac & cheese, salmon piccata, bison burger, elk bolognese and amaretto pork tenderloin. We all agreed that the food exceeded our expectation for Custer, SD. And the wine list included many Napa wines which we were happy to see. OMG, their food is sooo good! I wish we had come here earlier during our stay, I would have totally come back. Unfortunately, we didn't discover this gem until the last day, but I'm glad we did. The service was excellent and the dining room was well decorated. There was a bar with bar stools where they also served food. We ordered the Elk stuffed mushrooms for our appetizer and we ordered the Walleye on top of potato's, carrots and broccoli. The Walleye was delicious it was grilled, and done well. We stay at Custer for 3 days, had dinner at Sage the first night. Our dinner was so deliciouse we ate there all 3 nights.

One of the best meals we had in the Black Hills. The peanut noodles were so delish with fresh vegetables and charred chicken. My fiancé was super pleased with his salmon picatta. The waiter was kind. The atmosphere adorable. Well worth the money and calories!! read more

What a great choice to dine at the Sage Creek Grille. Excellent service and delicious food. We started off with the Elk-stuffed mushrooms and they were delicious. Not too gamey and the seasonings were very good. We both went with the Pot Roast Melt sandwiches. Oh my - the buttery, crispy toasted bread was a delight on its own - but stuffed with the tender pot roast, onions & bleu cheese - it was a mouthful of goodness! The crispy potatoes were also delicious and my husband said the grits were creamy deliciousness. The dessert menu looked amazing, but with our meals & beers, alas, there was no room left in our bellies. The restaurant is lively and a bit loud, the atmosphere is understated classiness. The food is OK, but the service was not good. The server was very impatient and not friendly. No french fries for kids. The burger and kebab were fine and served with potatoes chips straight from bag (not made by restaurants, as server confirmed). We asked for kids plastic water cups instead of glass cups on the table but water tasted funny but server was so unfriendly that we decided not to ask to change. He immediately served us with the check before us finishing the food and snatched the cash tip immediately after. We tried roast pot , bison burger, ceaser salad with chicken, house salads and Elk mushrooms. Food took a long time on a busy Sunday but overall OK. The best item was elk mushrooms. read more

A shinning star among Custer restaurants! While it's more expensive then than the other local bar food places, it is well worth it! We ate there 2 night and wish we went there more. Food flavors were exceptional and well thought out. As a NY foodie I appreciated the balance of flavors. Stopped in on our holiday after touring Custer Park. The reviews had us ready for a great meal, but didn't quite get there. Caesar salad was the high point for me, spouse had walleye which was pretty good. I had elk bolognese which was bad, very salty and plain. Service was just ok, nothing great about it. This is a little gem of a place in downtown Custer! Had a nice selection of fancy food! Our waitress Honest was an absolute sweetheart and made our experience amazing! She was hands on and took very good care of us! The atmosphere is wonderful pub like in my opinion. Our food was yum yum delicious! The bison ribeye was amazing and some of the best we have ever had! My only issue was the dessert was meh- it's supposed to be crème brule cheesecake with strawberries-they were out of strawberries no biggie but the top of the dessert was not "crunchy" like a crème brule. I wish they would've don't the whole top not just sprinkled sugar and then heated it up-it would've elevated it! Overall we would 100% come back! On our road trip to South Dakota. We enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Sage Creek Grille . Rosemarie had the Jamaican Chicken fFricassee, and I had the Bourbon Street Cajun Fettuccine. They were both delicious but if I'm being honest, I think Rosemarie picked the most delicious dish. Neither of us have had a fricassee before, but it was amazingly good. This little town in southwestern South Dakota apparently have a chef make their way from Jamaica to inspire several dishes. If you're ever in this town, I highly recommend making a point to enjoy a meal. We were full but their desert menu was beckoning - many choices but we decided on the Raspberry Galette which was heavenly! Pleasant atmosphere, friendly service and a delicious meal. You may have to wait a few minutes for a table but we found the short wait well worth it! read more

Sage Creek Grill is a great choice for dinner in Custer, South Dakota. The small cafe is a streetfront in the little town. It is a simple and casual restaurant with friendly and attentive service. The menu is eclectic and pretty tasty. Food tends to be cooked past the requested temperature, but it is still pretty darn good. The kids menu is a bit underwhelming, but my Spicy Korean Bowl was LEGIT spicy. The wine list is eclectic and generally overpriced, but I got an Italian pinot grigio that was reasonable and delicious. We had 8 people, so we ended up split between two tables - large parties are an issue. But, they kept us close together with a single server, so service was harmonious. I would highly recommend this little eatery to anyone visiting Custer. read more
