After all my time and efforts to get supplies to put fresh gas and swap out the spark plug, I still couldn't figure out why my lawn mower wasn't starting. I knew I didn't want to buy a new mower, so I finally gave in and looked up a local mower repair shop and came across HK. I called and described my issue which then they mentioned the carburetor might need to be cleaned and gave me a quote. When I dropped it off a couple days later, they suggested a full tune up for not much more than the orginal quote which I thought was fair and worth doing since I never got it done before. After leaving a deposit and waiting 2-3 days, my mower was ready. The guys at HK Small Engine provided great service and communication for the repair. They promised to give me a call if the work went over their original quote, which it didn't. The turnaround time was fine with me and price was fair. My mower works and sounds better than before which makes me excited to mow my lawn again! I'll be sure to come back for any future services. read more

3 terrible experiences having these guys try to repair generators. 1) Brought them a generator where the electric start wasn't working asking them to repair it. Instead of repairing it they removed the starter completely from the generator. 2) Brought them the same generator from (1) that only needed a new pull cord. They replaced the pull cord and when it got home the fuel economy switch didn't work any more. generator also making a weird fan noise now that it didn't used to make and other one of exact same make/model doesn't make. They say not their fault they didn't go near the computer, despite that part working fine when it was running prior to the pull cord snapping. 3) Brought them a generator with a working electric start and 30 amp circuit that needed a new 20 amp circuit. They sat on the generator for 2 months without doing anything, causing the the carburetor to go bad, charged me for a new carburetor, then when I went to pick up the generator the electric start was no longer working. Again, they say not their fault they didn't touch this. read more

Pg&e reported that power was going to be off from 8am to 5 pm today (02 15 24) ... I went to start my generator around 8 am and it was not not running right at all, I took it to HK engine and they had it back to me repaired in 90 minutes to 2 hours top! They gave me priority because they knew the power was out at my house... Fantastic business!!! read more

When our lawn mower wouldn't start, my wife & I were at a loss for what to do. All the normal things to check (gas, oil, blockages) didn't change anything. So, my wife called around and found this place (only 2 miles from our house). She described the situation over the phone, and they said they could fix it. She brought it over on a Saturday and they gave her a reasonable quote. On Monday afternoon, they called her to say it was ready. I went ahead and stopped by their location with my receipt, and they brought out the lawn mower. Before they loaded it in my car, they tested it. It sounded like new. All in all, we were very impressed by their professionalism and reasonable pricing. Will definitely come here again for future work. read more

I have only been here once... Had my lawnmower looked at and had a few needed things done and replaced. The communication was good. Prices were reasonable The staff was friendly and the work done was excellent. My lawnmower hasn't been serviced in years and had trouble starting after they serviced it, it starts with one pull. They also sell equipment here, like lawnmowers and hedge trimmers and other stuff and I bet you the quality is better than at a big box store, not that I'm an expert. But so far and only having one service done with them I would say I would definitely try them again. read more

My generator stopped working and after calling a few places I called these guys and told me to drop it off so they could check it out. I dropped it off around 2:30pm They gave me a call after an hour and a half and explained what was wrong with it along with an estimate and by 4:45 it was fixed and ready to be pick up. These guys are so nice and very professional Now my generator is working great, just like new. Totally recommend this place and will definitely be coming back. read more

Let me start by saying that the most important thing for me, the maintenance itself, was done right. I'm very pleased with the work itself. The reason I'm knocking a star off is, miss communication or lack of communication, miss-understandings etc.. I have a lawn mower, needs a tune up etc.. It's still working but could be running better. I call, give them the model and tell them what it needs, and ask roughly what are we looking at and given a figure. When I dropped it off the lowest figure was 20% higher. I explained I only wanted to spend a specific amount and we agreed they'd call if it went over that amount. 2 days later, I call 11am to see if its ready. I'm told it's not, it'll be ready by 2. 5pm I show up to pick it up, oops it's not ready. Come back in 45 minutes. I come back the next day, it's ready! But, it's $10 more than I wanted to spend, no call. All in all, I would say I'm pleased because the most important thing (to me anyway) was I felt it worked on properly and it's working great now. read more

I received a recall letter from Honda for my roller tiller so I looked on Yelp to see where I can take it in for the repair. I found HR Small Engine was the closest place to my mother's home where the roller tiller resides. I was greeted at the entry by a very friendly person, whom I suppose was the owner. After speaking to him for some time I was told that he would order the parts and call me when the part arrives. He told me that it would be about 1 week. I called back in a week and they did not have the part yet. I called back in two weeks and they still did not have the part. Almost three weeks later and still no part. I don't think they even ordered it, so I went back and picked it up and took it back to where I bought it....Gardenland in San Jose. They not only called me to let me know what progress they made, but they also fixed it within a week. read more

Kevin greeted my cheerfully when I pulled up with my generator and remembered my inquiry via phone the day earlier. I said "I'm bringing my generator in for service." and he said "Oh, the Honda EG2500?" I asked what his turn-around time was and he said "Two days." This is great as even though I didn't need it in two days, it's a much better turn-around time than the small engine service I've used in the past. He even pulled the part I needed (ignition coil) from another device so that he could have my generator ready as soon as possible, avoiding shipping cost and time. His shop looks clean and well-organized and they have a variety of small engine devices for sale: lawnmowers, chain saws, blowers and a good selection of modern Honda generators. He has convenient parking and easy access to drop off and bring in equipment. He gave me good advice as well on how to keep my seldom-used generator healthy so it'd be ready to go next time I need it. Highly recommended! read more

Kevin is the man! He knows his stuff. Great guy and has a great attitude. My lawnmower would not start. Kevin and his crew fixed it in a few days. Simple and no hassle. You just bring it in and leave the lawn mower with him. He gives you a receipt. Then when your lawnmower is ready, he'll call you. Most important thing is that he doesn't oversell it. He'll tell you what he thinks the problem is and fix it at the minimum cost needed. And he'll tell you how to prevent the problem from occurring again. Most places won't tell you how to prevent a problem from happening again because that hurts their profits, but Kevin is honest like that. read more

My wife and I decided to stop by hoping that we'd find the lawn mower I was looking for, and get a decent price in the process. The same mower is $599 at Home Depot. We walked in, and were greeted by a younger asian guy behind the counter. I asked him how much the mower was. He said it was $759. I asked him to double check, since the MSRP from the Honda website says $699, and it was offered from many othe rplaces for much less than that. Witout even looking, he said I was wrong, and it was the older model that was cheaper. What a true waste of time at this place. I don't know if the guy is ignorant or a liar, but either way, don't waste your time and money in this place. read more

Great small business in San Leandro. Sells Jonsered Chain saws which is a brand of Husqvarna. I called to ask about a specific model and Kevin had it in stock. Went to see it and Kevin told me about the differences between it and the next model up plus the Echo products. He showed me how to start it, fuel it, maintain the chain etc. This is what you want from a dealer that you eventually will bring your chain back to for maintenance when needed. I am about to call to ask about string trimmers and I am sure I'll get the same service level. read more
