The good: I have been taking my garden tools here for repairs a half dozen times now. Lawn mowers, leaf blowers etc. All the repairs are fuel related due to ethanol pump gas. I get them back running good again. The bad: Took my 6-year-old Honda EU2200i in for two recalls. They are an authorized Honda repair facility. I told them the fuel runs out the overflow hose sometimes. A few days later and $145 plus parts for the repair I picked up my generator. It ran the same as before even with a stumble at idle speed. Again, a lot of fuel dumped on my garage floor. Took it back to Jai's. Got a call to pick it up. They found no leaks. I thought the $145 was for a carburetor cleaning and that they would stand behind their work. Not the case. I dismantled the carb myself and cleaned jets and float needle. It's been a week now and it is still purring like a kitten. The stumble is gone. I purchased a new OEM carb and will change it myself if the float ever gets stuck again. I believe if Jai's had cleaned the carb properly or replaced it the problem would have been fixed the first time. What was the $145 repair charge for after all? Bottom line: $145 did NOT repair my generator. I fixed it myself after the shop repair. The float needle was gummed up from sitting for 5 years. I cleaned it and it no longer leaks fuel. I paid Jai's $145 for nothing. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Once they were paid, they felt it was repaired and were not interested in investigating the fuel leak further.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Not what I expected from a small engine repair shop. The small engine shop I went to went out of business. I needed to repair a power washer so I saw Jai's mower and saw service. They took my business right away. They require a deposit for the work to be done.. They listened to my description of the problem. I was given an estimate based on the problem they found to make the repair. The deposit was also for the trouble in diagnosing the problem which would not be returned if I decided against the repair. The estimate was quite reasonable and the deposit would be used to pay for part of the repair fee. The work was done and the repair person gave me a demo confirming the repair was complete. As the saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished. I decided to create a wildfire break between my property and an open field before fire season to protect my neighborhood. Just my luck, my John Deere riding mower hits part of a buried cyclone fence breaking these two plastic pieces that raise and lower the mower and trashed the blades too. I did some research on a few places to bring it to be repaired and they had good reviews and close by. After rewiring and upgrading the lights on my utility trailer, because my dog thought it was a milkbone chew toy, I brought it down to Jai's to fix it and do a complete maintenance service on it. Jai also suggested replacing the two plastic pieces that broke with metal, so it wouldn't break again. Great suggestion and the mule now runs like new again. Happy I brought it to him and I plan on bringing several other small engine tools here in the future for needed maintenance. read more

I use my mower roughly 3 times per week on neighbor's very small lawns. I'd say I use it for roughly 15 minutes per week- which equates to 1 hour per month. Roughly 9 months ago I called around to a few shops in the area to get my mower serviced. 2 closed their doors because of the covid pandemic. The closest one I could find was in Castro Valley- a place called Jai's- where the English spoken is very hard to understand. Took my 4 year old Craftsman Briggs & Stratton Platinum series 7.25 163cc mower in to sharpen the blade, fix the throttle linkage, which had come loose from its housing...and may as well get a tune-up. KEEP IN MIND it was running ABSOLUTELY FINE. They quoted me something that seemed reasonable. I left it for the day. Picked it up next day. Throttle linkage fixed. Blade sharpened. Tune-up...ummmm, I dont think so. Started it up there at the shop. Seemed fine for first few seconds...then cough cough sputter sputter for 10 seconds, then it seemed fine. The people said "Ohhhh... that nomal. Don't worry- it go way." Trusting them at their word, I said okay, "it will go Away." Several days later when I went to neighbors place to mow their lawn, the exact same thing happened. I figured 'give it a week', you know? A week went by...same thing. A few weeks later...same thing. I called Jai's and told them it was still having these same issues it had the day they 'tuned jt up'. They said "Ohhhh...kay. Bring in. We look at- fix" I said Okay...whatever needs looking at regarding the previous work, you will fix No Charge right?...because I live 30 minutes away & gas isnt cheap for a truck that gets 10 miles per gallon & can't afford to pay more on what was already serviced. They said "Ohhh...bring in we fix." Again I asked "I wont get charged for work on previous repairs correct??? They said "Ohhhh...we charge yes." I hung up. So I've been dealing with the same COUGH COUGH SPUTTER SPUTTER for 9 months. Yesterday, it backfired 5 times so LOUD it sounded like someone was shooting a .45ACP. I called back to see if someone new would answer...nope. Same old Asian woman who refused to look at it unless "I pay!" All in All...DONT TRUST THIS BUSINESS TO STAND BEHIND THEIR WORK! read more

A family friend had recommended this shop to me and I'm really glad he did. My idiot brother blew the motor on my lawnmower and so I brought it to Jai's. The service was great and they really seem to know their stuff. Before my mower died, it would take several pulls to start. Jai's replaced the head, head gasket, air filter, sparkplug, and oil. When I got home, I added some fuel and primed the motor and it started up in just one pull! Runs like a champ now! The pricing seemed reasonable and it definitely was below the cost of a new mower. This is the ONLY place to take your gas powered equipment. They are the best. I have had repaired and tuned up: several mowers, rototiller, several generators and a few chain saws and a weed wacker. I have also purchased several Honda generators and a commercial mower from this place and they have always given me a very competitive price and great service. In an emergency they have repaired equipment by the next day....usually its a several day turn around. They are always cheerful and honest, always happy to take anything you give them. They sharpen blades too. My chainsaw is so sharp it cuts like a hot knife through butter. They always remember my name and equipment. The husband and wife team are great. The husband always gives you a small bag with all of the parts they replaced so you can see for yourself the problems. He is also quite funny to talk to and he is always ready to help or explain anything you ask. I highly recommend this place to all of my friends and family and they too have had great experiences. There are not a lot of small engine repair places in Eastbay at this point in time. I had some issues with an old Ryobi weed eater and decided to try and get it repaired versus buying a new one. After some Yelp research I decided to drive to Castro Valley to give Jai a try. I dropped the weed eater/edger off on 10-7. On 10-14 they called a said it was ready. When I picked it up, a young man waited on me and said his father had worked on it. The unit was clean and the gentleman explained all the work that had been done. I paid, a very fair amount, and went to walk outside. The man followed me and said, "start it up and make sure it meets your satisfaction". Two pulls and it started, better than when it was new. We had loaned our power-washer to a friend who broke it in two or three places before giving it back. We tried taking it to a couple of places, but noone knew what to do with it or were trying to over charge. We were about to give up and just buy a new one when we found this place. We took it to Jai's Mower and they took the machine right away, without a second thought, and fixed it within a day or two. Took my lawnmower here because they were the only shop open late Saturday afternoon, boy I am glad I did! Great service, runs like new. They found the gas tank was leaking (it was), and couldn't reach me by phone so they replaced it for cost of parts only. Cleaned it up, replaced the plug and sharpened the blade, all for $120 and one week. In the 15 minutes I was there dropping the mower off 3-4 different independent landscape service pickup trucks stopped by. Seems to the the place to go for the pro's. read more

Stay away from this place. I saw the 2 reviews and took my wood chipper here. The lady on the phone said - we can't tell you how much it costs to fix until we have a chance to look at it. It costs 25 bucks and if you do the service with us, it will go towards the service. I was like fine, worst case I will pay the $25, at least I will know what is wrong with the chipper. Looks like the guy just googled the price of the wood chipper and came back with exactly half of its price as the cost of fixing it. I told him on phone, no that is too much I will pay the 25 bucks and take the chipper. When I went to pick it up, the wife charged $25 on my card while the husband brought the machine from the back. He brings it back in 3 pieces. I was like ok, what do you want me to do with these 3 pieces, put them back together. He is like no, you want me to put it back together, that is another $15. I said no, I gave it to you in one piece. I want it back in one piece. The guy drops all the pieces on the ground and starts cussing at me. I was like dude, I don't care how loud you get I am not giving a penny more. Finally his son comes from the back and tells his dad to put it together and apologizes. If you want to get ripped of by some old Asian dude, go here. Otherwise find some where else. read more
