Dr Howe stopped by on discharge day!
    Kandice K.

Back again with my 2nd pregnancy! If you're reading this and it's your first pregnancy, and you're very eager to know baby's gender, trust me when I say that you can wait until 13 weeks to find out at your appointment. Your first appointment is roughly around 6-9 weeks, and your 13 week ultraound appointment comes pretty fast for Katie to be able to tell you gender. If you hate getting blood tests let me tell you how many you'll have: about 6 blood work orders to have completed after your first appointment (only one needle prick is needed to get them completed), then a 1st trimester screening at 10 weeks blood work, a 2nd trimester screening blood work, and finally a glucose testing blood work around 26 weeks that will require 3 needle pricks. This time around I knew and accepted that getting an appointment as well as the wait time to be seen would take awhile, but it's worth it. Halfway through this pregnancy I did notice that it was more difficult to call the office as they were understaffed. The staff does call the day before your appointment to confirm, which is the time to speak to them about anything that you may possibly need to speak to them about. If you need to contact the office for any reason, I'd definitely advise contacting them through their patient portal as they respond pretty quickly. It was super sweet that 2 years later, both Dr Maslovaric and Dr Howe, as well as one of the PAs remembered me from my first pregnancy. They all took great care of me and eased my biggest concern of whether or not I would deliver early, Dr Howe and I were on the same page guessing that I would deliver around 37 weeks as this wasn't my first pregnancy. I ended up delivering at 35 weeks...in the passenger seat of my car! Long story short: we were on the way to the hospital and there was traffic. After pulling into the womens pavilion and the NICU team took my son, I was admitted to deliver the placenta, and Dr Maslovaric stopped by to congratulate me, as she had been the Dr to deliver my 1st son 2 years ago. Dr Howe stopped by just before I was discharged. All this to say, HM medical takes great care of their patients and they are absolutely worth the wait to be seen! The Drs and PAs are super knowledgeable and they will for sure answer any questions or concerns you have! Dr Howe in particular will make sure you've got any and all prescriptions needed prescribed to ensure a healthy pregnancy. If I end up finding out I'm expecting another child, I'll be back! And hopefully if I do have another child I'll make it to the hospital instead of being stuck in traffic

Me in France celebrating my 40th birthday after I got my tubes removed thanks to Dr. Maslovaric!

His dermatologist recommended Dr Gelman and another specialist in Utah. We chose California first because it was closer. Unfortunately, our experience was INCREDIBLY DISAPPOINTING! My husband was experiencing severe scrotal lymphedema that continued to worsen despite seeing multiple doctors before we met with Dr Gelman. During our appointment with Dr Gelman, we spent approximately 45 minutes being told that his weight was the problem. Grabbing his belly, calling him fat. COMPLETING HUMILIATING. Told him he needs to get gastric bypass, then maybe we could talk about surgery. What made this even more frustrating was that Dr Gleman has published research and treated patients with much larger cases of scrotal lymphedema, including the patient featured on TLC with a 132 pound scrotum!! My husband was nowhere near that size, yet we were told his weight was the issue and no effort was made to determine the underlying cause of his lymphedema. As we later learned, obesity was NOT the cause of his condition. We later learned that the underlying problem was severe lymphatic dysfunction. His lymphatic system was not properly draining the fluid from the area, which caused the progressive buildup of fluid, inflammation, and tissue. His condition was much more complex than simply being overweight like Dr Gelman blamed the cause on. A little while after his appointment with Dr Gelman, he developed cellulitis that progressed to sepsis where his kidneys began to shut down. We had just switched insurance plans and happened to be in a 15 day coverage gap leaving us with approximately $50,000 in medical bills. He had never spent a single night in a hospital before. Imagine this never would've happened if Dr Gelman actually wanted to help look for a solution instead of being fatphobic. We saw the second specialist at University of Utah who IMMEDIATELY said, "We need to fix this." He immediately recognized the severity of the condition, fought through the insurance hurdles with us, and performed surgery. Looking back, it's heartbreaking to think about how much suffering, time, and money might have been prevented if we had received a more thorough evaluation and a willingness to investigate the cause instead of attributing everything to weight. I would never recommend Dr Joel Gelman.

That is when I was told about a $500 cancellation fee within two weeks, something that was never clearly communicated. My entire scheduling process was handled through text, not a single phone call, and even at my pre op appointment exactly two weeks before surgery, this fee was never mentioned. When I called, I was repeatedly told "it is the policy" without any real explanation. I asked to speak to a manager, and the assistant administrator, Shannon, called me back. Unfortunately, she was very difficult to deal with. Her tone was stern and dismissive, and I barely had a chance to explain my concerns before she said, "Angela, it is our policy," speaking slowly in a way that felt condescending. I explained that I was not calling to argue that they have policies. My concern was the lack of communication and the fact that everything was scheduled so close to that two week window. I asked to speak with the administrator since she reports to them, but she refused and said, "No, this is my job, and no one will be calling you back." At one point, she also said, "Well, I am going to charge your credit card on file," which was completely inappropriate. I fully understand that offices have policies, but this is surgery, clear communication matters. Patients should not be expected to rely on fine print from an initial visit when surgery was not even planned yet. Even on my preop, it was not mentioned. For the longest time,…read moreI didn't worry about them because they didn't really bother me, other than the fact that they weren't pretty to look at. I knew the day would eventually come for surgery, so I went online and searched for a doctor that specializes in hernia repair. I found a doctor who I thought was one of the best out there, Dr. Harris from California Hernia Specialists in Newport Beach, CA. He provides a collection of information and videos on his website that come from his years of performing hernia surgeries. Well, the day did finally come when my hernias did start to hurt, so I made the call to Dr. Harris. Within a week, I had a consultation, and 25 days later, July 31, 2026 to be exact, Dr. Harris did the laparoscopic procedure. Recovery was easy and I would say pain-free with over-the-counter pain medication. Having done the surgery, I wished I had it done years ago, from a purely aesthetic point of view. I may even have been foolish to have waited so long in case they became life-threatening. I took 3 weeks off from hiking on the advice of Dr. Harris, and now I'm back out there doing my usual hikes and other activities with no discomfort. I took his advice about icing the surgical area for almost two days and nights. Here's my advice on icing: Purchase five or six small frozen bags of sweet corn. Frozen sweet corn stays frozen longer than peas because of its density. Put boxer shorts on and then put tighty-whitey underwear on over the boxer shorts. Slip the frozen corn between the two layers of underwear to avoid direct contact with your skin. Take the recommended dosage of Tylenol and set the timer for 3 hours. When the timer goes off, remove the sweet corn package and replace it with another package of frozen sweet corn. Now take Ibuprofen and reset the timer for another 3 hours. Repeat this cycle every 3 hours. When placing the frozen sweet corn back in the freezer for reuse, be sure to flatten down the package so it's not lumpy when you take it out for later use. I did this round the clock. My bedroom is upstairs, and I had no problem whatsoever going downstairs to grab another bag of frozen sweet corn. BTW, at the end of each 3-hour session, the sweet corn was still cold, not frozen, but still cold. One other piece of advice: purchase a bottle of Phillips Milk of Magnesia. I needed to empty my bowels 24 hours after the surgery, and the stool softener tablets I had taken earlier weren't doing anything, and I was beginning to feel uncomfortable. 30 minutes after taking the Milk of Magnesia, my bowels cleared, and I was back to being regular again. Above all, follow Dr. Harris's advice; he knows what he's talking about because he's seen/heard it all from patients that followed his advice and those who didn't. When I went in for my initial consultation with Dr. Harris, it felt like I had known him for years. From my consult to the surgery (3 weeks ago 4/2026,) I have nothing but praise for Dr Harris as well as his staff. They have been excellent in answering my questions as well as communicating everything I needed to know, both preop and post op. My surgery went smoothly with almost no post op pain.. (tylenol only for 2 days). I would highly recommend Dr. Harris for your surgery.
