This is one of the few old school chinese bakeries left in Boston's Chinatown. If you haven't tried this place yet, be sure you hit them up and support them before they disappear (hope not). Unlike the newer style bakeries, you'll find older generation workers here and baked goods prepared just like they did 20 years ago. You won't see flashy ordering kiosks or specialty drinks or anything like that. It's just good 'ole baked pastries the way it was when you were a child. Pricing is good, taste is good and service is mom and pop style. Good selection. Place does not look fancy at all, so don't expect to add any decor shots in your instagram from here. read more

A really good Chinese bakery option, with separately packed buns and pastries (egg tarts, black bean buns, coconut buns, hot dog buns etc), mooncakes in different flavors, crispy shrimp chips, cookies, cakes and sticky rice ($4.75). They have some items that you can pick yourself and others behind a glass counter. They were packed on a Saturday afternoon but the line moved rather quickly. $10 credit card minimum and .05 for a bag. There's no seating so just grab and go. read more

Was visiting Boston and had a craving for Chinese egg tarts, but the ones with the flaky shell...not the cookie shell type. And while we were at it, their sesame balls (with black bean paste filling) looked good....and big too! So, we went ahead and ordered one of each to take away.....since they are take out only. Mmm mmm mmmmmmm, the egg tarts were a bit sweet, but that silky smooth egg custard filling in that wonderful flaky shell was heaven. The sesame ball was very good too.....with that perfect light crunch on the outside, nice chewy outside with that lovely, and not too sweet, black bean filling......really made my day....especially after our dim sum lunch around the corner. The only thing I wished was that they were hot and fresh out of the oven or fryer, and that would have made this the most perfect day :) Unfortunately, the egg tarts and sesame balls had been out a while and had cooled. One of my favorite bakeries in Chinatown! It's a small shop with counter service, and the people behind the counter are quick (although not the most warm and fuzzy, but what do you expect). They understand my broken mix of Mandarin, Toisan, and English which is really all I can ask for. My favorites are the egg tarts, hot dog buns, and ham sui gok, but availability really depends on the time of day. If you're planning on a big order for one of the holidays, I highly recommend you call ahead to make sure you get what you want! I was in dire need of an egg tart after getting a hair cut in the neighborhood and after checking out Mei Sum, which only sold 6 or so egg tarts in a box, I found Ho Yuen a few steps down. Bonus points for the menu with both English and Chinese taped to the counter, as well as for the prices - $1.50 per egg tart! The egg tart was plenty tasty, not too sweet, wonderful flaky crust, but very, very greasy on the bottom. One was enough for me. I'd come back to try the other pastries and bao and moon cakes. The service was ... distracted. Two of the three women mixed up the change for two separate customers' orders and started squabbling loudly, ignoring me and one other customer standing there. Given it's been over a year since my last review of Ho Yuen Bakery, I figured I'd provide an update. This place has become one of my go-to spots in Chinatown. They have a nice selection of baked goods, both sweet and savory. Everything is very reasonably priced. Generally, I go for a steamed bun, but everything I've tried here has been delicious. The sweets are always very tempting, as everything in the display case looks amazing! This is really a grab and go spot, so make sure to know what you want and order quickly, especially if there is a line. The service isn't always the best, but that's fine by me, given it's not a sit down restaurant. It's also pretty bare bones in terms of decor. I've been sitting in my car aggressively saying "wow" and "omg" for the past 5 minutes since taking my first bite of this custard bun. It's soft and creamy and chewy and the top is perfectly crisp. This is unbelievable. I almost didn't get to try this place because it IS cash only but I'm also like a million weeks pregnant and was CRAVING buns I was not about to walk away without them. I'm so glad I did cuz it was exactly what I wanted. Spent the day in Boston with family. I was told this is the bakery for all things savory and sweet. We bought a little bit of everything including a couple dozens of BBQ pork buns (which happened to be just freshly baked before we walked in) to take back to our friends and family in Lowell. The ladies running the front of the house weren't exactly the friendliest but I think it's because they want to get everyone in and out. Judging from the foot traffic we witnessed during our short 10 minutes in the shop on a weekday, I have a feeling this bakery gets really packed on weekends and Asian holidays. One last thing to note, this joint is located in the center of Chinatown with many other competing Asian bakeries on the same corridor. It is filled with plenty of pork and the bread is the perfect level of soft without falling apart. They are cash only and there isn't much parking around in the area. I would highly recommend coming via public transit or walking. They have no seating area and you'll spend about 3 minutes tops inside. They are efficient at packing your order and speak a good amount of English. Note that they don't call out all the items that include meat, for example, their scallion buns include bits of bacon. Truly a gem in the heart of Boston! I visited here everyday of my visit. The smell of fresh baked goodies will slap you silly once you open the door. So many options! The lineup is so fire! The price points are the cherries on top. Everything is basically under $2 and feel like each piece was created by grandma's secret daily recipe. Went in around 9:30a on a weekday and the woman at the front and older man (who seemed to be one of the chefs) were so sweet. Egg tarts were tasty, warm and fresh. The best I've had. Stayed warm all the way to work. I tried the melon cake too, which was a bit sticky, so if you're not a fan of sticky/dense desserts, I would opt for the coconut cake instead. They have sweet and savory stuff, like hot dog stuffed buns. The winner was definitely the curry beef bun....I saw curry beef pie on the menu, and if it's a bigger version of the bun, I'm definitely getting that next time!!! So good. Cash only. read more

Super cute shop with delicious treats for every sweet tooth from just wanting a simple plain sponge cake to a sweet and savory pastry. We were able to get a little bit of everything between red bean pastry to bread to take home for the next few days. They have everything properly labeled and prices vary but well worth the quality! Best thing I had was the lo po bing (wife cake/ melon cake). You don't need to splurge on the melon cake with egg yolk. The original is what you want. It might be the best wife cake I've ever had. It's a smaller circumference but it's thicker than others. It is flakey on the outside with soft, sweet, and slightly crunchy filling. MUST GET. Other wife cakes I've had don't prioritize the filling. This place does. Sugar, shredded coconut, candied melon, sesame seeds, butter all in a flakey shell. The baked beef bun was good too. The filling is tasty and savory. Also, as a tip, know what you want to order before you go. If not, you'll be met with rude remarks in Chinese and lots of impatience from the staff. I speak Chinese, so I understood everything they were saying aloud or muttering under their breath. FIVE STARS FOR THE WIFE CAKE/MELON CAKE. Outstanding. Best you'll find anywhere. It's a dirt cheap Bakery in Boston which has some pretty delicious wife cakes. There are lots of good bakeries here in Chinatown Boston - probably a dozen or more. You should try all of them and figure out which ones you like better. This one is somewhere in the middle of my list but when it comes to funny names it's right at the top of the list.
