My go to in Chinatown for baked goods. If you come early enough (before 9:30), the bread is still warm! I prefer the pineapple bun here compared to other Chinatown bakeries and they have a couple more varieties including pineapple coconut which isn't as easy to find in Boston. Their egg tart is also fantastic with good egg flavor in the custard and a buttery, flaky crust that smells so good. Prices are reasonable with most buns and baked items coming in under $2. Cash only for the bakery. I haven't tried the restaurant and need to do that soon. Definitely worth coming to visit the bakery! read more

The food and service here went downhill. The restaurant used to be packed. There was no line at lunch time and many empty tables. Soy sauce chow mein ($13.95) - it was not authentic. It tasted like regular plain noodles. It was supposed to have a strong soy sauce flavor. The dim sum menu price was misleading. It was marked as small dish but they charged for more. Roasted pork and wonton noodles ($12.95) - the pork inside the wonton was black and had a terrible smell. The boneless spareribs also looked dark and not fresh. The server refused to cancel it on the bill. She insisted it was freshly made and said it was just the way they marinated the meat. It was not edible. Great Taste is a restaurant in Chinatown that has seating, but is mostly known for its bakery and desserts that you can pickup. We came here after lunch for a sweet treat and they were adamant that we couldn't sit down even though we ordered Egg Custard Buns. The wait time was long and inconvenient, but we didn't mind since it was raining outside. The ambiance inside was very family friendly and similar to other dim sum restaurants. The egg custard buns were okay - the bun was soft when warm, but hardened pretty quickly. Also, the filling was a little grainy but not too sweet. I was visiting Boston and my local friends love this place for dim sum so they had to bring me in to try. The service was great! I'm so used to dim sum restaurant servers being so hostile, this was a nice surprise. We tried the usual shu mais and dumplings and then ordered BEEF CHOW FUN and SALT AND PEPPER SQUID. All were great, not thee best, but it was good and hit the spot. We all left stuffed and would return again. Note that if you are one to eat a lot of chili oil with your dim sum, be clear and ask for the whole bottle from the beginning, or they will keep bringing you a small amount each time. read more

As for the food, I thought the selection and quality of the food was average compared to other dim sum places I've been to. Nothing that was phenomenal, but nothing that was bad either. This is a bakery and a restaurant all in one. They have some of the cheapest pastries, breads, and other Chinese desserts in all of Chinatown, and that's saying a lot, because stuff is cheap around here. During my time in Boston, I came here often - perhaps weekly - for a small snack to-go. There's a bit of seating inside at the restaurant, but I preferred to buy pastries and eat them on one of the benches outside nearby. I'd highly recommend their red bean yolk pastries. The daikon radish cake grilled was great (once they gave us the right sauce), congee was solid, but the ginger tripe and the chicken feet in a "black bean sauce" were bland, lacked any flavor. Solid dim sum! Came here with a party of 4 at prime time 11am on Saturday. Somehow got a table immediately because it got super packed right after with people standing around the tables waiting for spots to open up. Service was fast & efficient as they're trying to move people in & out as quick as possible. No cart, check the food items on the list (they provide pics) & they bring it out to you. All of the items came out hot & fresh except for the egg tarts which was a slight bummer. Restaurant accepts card, the bakery line is cash only. $80 for 4 people after tip. This has been my go to for affordable Chinese comfort food for years. A recent visit was disappointing. The singapore noodles, which in the past have come interwoven with shredded pork, shrimp and vegetables, now was just a pile of yellow noodles surrounded with unappetizing chunks of pork and red pepper. The pork was dried out and looked like some last-choice slices that had been sitting in the fridge. The prices are up, too! Hot and sour soup was notably gloppier, more cornstarchy than in the past. The waitress did not speak any English, and, after she took my order came back fifteen minutes later to inquire "Fried rice?" She also had no clue as what kind of take out container is required for soup, handing me a flimsy styrofoam container that would've burst in a minute. Great Taste vs. Winsor Dimsum Cafe. Winsor had stairs, which would be a little more challenging for Dad, so we decided on Great Taste. By the time we got back, there was a line waiting. It's a small place and next door was the bakery. Everything is made to order. The menu is more limited compared to San Antonio. I think Dad prefers the dimsum at @goldenwoksatx. With the blustery weather that Boston had been getting, their congee really hit the spot. I got a handful of things to bring home and the BBQ pork buns weren't as satisfying as I hoped. There's barely any meat and what you can taste is alright. I've been back to this bakery a few more times since my initial review. It's still not my favorite option in Chinatown, but they do have a solid variety of pastries and other baked goods. It's very no frills, so don't expect too much in the way of ambiance or vibes. The service isn't great, either, and it's just counter service As for the baked goods, I've definitely had better. I've noticed some of the buns had a gritty texture because there was raw sugar sprinkled on the inside, rather than mixed in with the other ingredients. They can also tend to be a bit more on the oily side. I did enjoy some of their mochi-based pastries, which had a smoother consistency and a decent flavor. We stopped in here for a quick breakfast. We ordered 4 items: shrimp dumpling (har gow), bean curd sheet rolls (seen juk guen), veggies, cruller rice roll (tza Leung). Right in the center of Chinatown, you'll find this hidden gem of a restaurant. Similar to other restaurants that I have reviewed, this restaurant offers dim sum all day long. Along with some very traditional Cantonese style dishes, one being the imperial pork, which is a delicious crispy tangy mountain of pork chops. This place will not win any awards for the decor, as it is rather dated, however it makes it all back up in the food. We ordered a handful of traditional dim sum dishes such as the steamed rice and chicken in a banana, leaf, shrimp, dumplings, pork dumplings, and a few other very traditional Cantonese Tim some dishes. Additionally, we also ordered the house special fried rice (Yang Chow Chow Fun) chicken, and bamboo shoots, and the imperial park. Everything was served, fast, hot and delicious. One of the best judges I can ever tell you is my son, who loved everything. (This place is Child Approved!) The service was great, and additionally, while overhearing other tables guests, who are not familiar with Chinese, we're not having any issues, communicating with the servicer, as servers were taking their orders, and were able to briefly describe what certain dishes were. Love the dim sum here. The restaurant is small and crowded. There is usually a wait for a table, but don't let that deter you. The dim sum is worth it. The restaurant does not serve from traditional rolling carts. Instead, you mark what you want on a paper copy of the menu. Not familiar with what to order? No problem, there are picture menus at the table so you can see and order by number. I like this method of ordering because the food is prepared to order so you will get your items "hot" from the kitchen. I am a connoisseur of dim sum. This is a little gem that is authentic and above average. I really enjoyed their flat white noodles items. The texture of the noodles was soft and tender. The Shrimp Cheung Fun and the Steamed Pork Noodle Rolls showcased these. The Siu Mai and Tofu Skin Pork dumplings were bigger than normal and were good. My other favorites were the Shrimp and Chive dumplings. They are different from traditional Haw Gow and I like the way the chives provided accent to the shrimp. On a Friday noon, a friend and I decided to get lunch before heading back to work. Despite the restaurant looking packed, we received seating immediately, though a line formed immediately after. We ordered the 7 following items, all of which managed to disappoint - shrimp rice roll / 蝦腸粉 - Chinese broccoli / 芥蘭 - marinated chicken feet / 鳳抓 - shrimp dumpling / 蝦餃 - chive & shrimp dumpling / 韭菜蝦餃 - congee / 粥 - shumai / 燒賣 - tripe w/scallion and ginger / 牛百葉 The shrimp in the shrimp rice roll, shrimp dumplings, and chive & shrimp dumplings had a powdery exterior mouthfeel and tasted like refrigerator burn. In addition, the dumplings' exterior wrappings had hardened; they did not possess the expected springy texture. The Chinese broccoli arrived cold. The skin on the marinated chicken feet had no fluff; eating it felt like skinning a hide. The congee had insufficient broth flavor and tasted watery and thin. The top of the shumai seemed to have freezer burn; it had dried out and hardened. Lastly, the tripe had insufficient scallion and ginger flavor. More egregiously, the bottom had hidden fried tofu filler. I would actively warn others against going here. read more

3.5 iykyk I low key gate kept this as my favorite dim sum in Boston. If this were tapas it would be over hyped and possibly cost 5x more. The bakery that's connected is also solid and so the baked items along with savory dim sum dishes make this place a must go for dim sum. While it's hard to compete with bigger city quality and price such as LA, SF, or NY, Boston is getting there as more competition and demand for good quality value food is growing. With that said, there's been a lot of gentrification going on in Chinatown and I hope some of the long time staples stay where they are and continues to imprint that makes Boston's Chinatown unique and worth visiting. read more
