I tried a red bean Mooncake, a lotus and egg Mooncake, and a "cup" cake. The lotus Mooncake had very little flavor and almost a meaty flavor to the dough which was ok but not amazing. The red bean one was tastier for sure and probably the best item I bought. The cup cake was dry and not soft compared to others I've had which are usually like a light soft eggy Angel food cake. However, be warned, the meats are quite fatty. - Big steamed bun - it's positioned next to small chicken buns, so you think the big buns would just have larger portions of chicken meat. In fact, they have all kinds of meat inside, including chicken, pork, corned beef, sausage, and egg. Just so you know what to expect when you bite into it... Very big and very filling. - Pork bun - decent, but pork was too fatty, not much actual meat. Pretty unfortunate since I really love pork buns (maybe I'm too picky). - Sticky rice cake with red bean paste - soft and sweet and perfect glutinous texture, just as good as other places I've tried - Curry beef bun - great curry flavor, filling for a light snack - Curry beef pie - same curry flavor as above but wrapped in a flaky pastry pie. The flakiness was great though a tad dry. Went on a Friday morning after having dimsum across the street. Got an almond cookie & shrimp chips and both were pretty disappointing. The almond cookie was $1 and a very decent size but it tasted like butter thats been stored in the fridge with your kimchi for way too long. It wasnt that too sweet like a lot of almond cookies which is good, but the overwhelming taste of weird fridge butter was too strong to ignore. The shrimp chips also tasted & felt stale. My cousin had half a bag, felt a little sick later in the day. Overall wouldnt go back or recommend. I've tried most of the bakeries in Chinatown and this one maintains as my favorite. I was so upset that it was closed for so long over the pandemic but was excited to see that it was open again. It's cash only and pretty small but I feel the quality of their buns are better and more authentic than what they sell in nearby bakeries. The pricing's really fair with most of their individual buns ranging from 1-2 dollars. The round fried dough and hot dog bun are my favorites and if you go later in the day it'd probably do you good to reheat it since I believe most of their items are made fresh in the morning. On this recent trip to Boston, purchases expanded to Ho Yuen Bakery where we took home roast pork buns and big buns (white fluffy exterior with meat and egg on the inside). The roast pork buns are smaller than what we are used to at Mei Sum, but I think they are better in terms of filling. The filling is more meaty. Overall, each bun is $1.20. The big buns were fine according to my dining companion. There was ample meat but based on her preferences, it was too marinated in terms of the meat filling. read more

They might not appear very interesting at first but Ho Yuen Bakery has stayed in business in Boston Chinatown for decades and that should tell you something about their traditional Chinese pastries and baked goods. I have fond memories of stopping in as a child and walking out with their steamed sugar cakes ( white sugar steamed cake 'bak tong gou' / yellow sugar steamed cake 'wong tong gou') or one of those traditional Chinese buns. The staff I've encountered don't speak English all that well, but they have always been really friendly and done their best to recommend their favorites. Stumbled onto Chinatown and I saw many people carrying around boxes with the Ho Yuen logo on it. I was intrigued so I walked in with two friends. It was a little shop with tons of pastries. Some of my favorites are: * 雞尾包(cocktail bun) - shredded coconut with sesame seeds * 缽仔糕(steam rice cup cake) * 白糖糕(steam white sugar cake) Most bakeries make the cocktail bun with a lot of bread and hardly and filling. I've officially found it - the BEST place to get lunch for $1 in Chinatown. Ho Yuen has been on my list of places to try in Boston for a couple of years now. I finally had the chance to stop by, and I was not disappointed. There was a large assortment of savory pastries and sweet baked goods in the glass display case; it was difficult to decide what to get. I opted for the pork bun (similar to a char siu manapua for all of my Hawaii friends) and a jian dui (fried sesame ball made with glutinous rice flour). The star of the show was, of course, the pork bun. For $1, the bun was enormous. The texture was soft and fluffy, and the filling was salty and surprisingly fatty. The jian dui was tasty, but a little too oily for my liking. It's a shame I don't live or work near Chinatown because if I did, I would be getting a Ho Yuen pork bun for lunch almost every day. read more

We came here as part of my ongoing mission to find good mochi in boston. Ho Yuen is an old-fashioned Cantonese bakery with a cramped storefront but expansive baking facilities in the back. The menus are all written in Chinese. The mochi has a soft, fresh exterior and a filling of chopped up peanuts and sugar. They're also a generous size for being 90 cents each. The sesame ball was ok but a little greasy. These are generally better fresh from the frier though. The 綠豆酥 (mung bean pastry) could be flakier, but the filling is nice and rich and slightly savory to balance the sweetness. read more

One of the best bakeries to which I've ever been. Items were all super soft, buttery, and had just the right level of crisp. We got the Pineapple Bun and the Custard mini-pies. The Pineapple bun is a soft buttery Asian steamed bun topped with a quarter inch of thick and crusty pineapple topping. It is a joyous experience for the sweet charred pineapple and butter taste to give way to the chewy and soft bun. Quite an incredible dessert at $1.10. The custard is a small hand-sized pie of sweet eggy custard surrounded by a buttery, crispy pie crust. This was better than any of the custard pies we had in Portugal, where they supposedly specialize in them. The eggy, firm and smooth custard texture pleasantly played with the buttery crust to create an incredible mouthfeel and flavor experience. I highly recommend you check this out. read more
