We've been using Hobbs for over a decade and have nothing but glowing things to say about this team. Recently our 10 year old suv was having major issues. The team graciously took the car in same day- listened to our concerns, too the time to evaluate each issue and called us with three different options, prioritizing the most important work first. The Beige Bomber lives! 2006 CRV having problems with what felt like an alternator/starter/power issue. First took the car to the Honda dealership and quoted $4250 !!! I told them "that's not going to happen. the car is not even worth that much..." Co-workers suggested Hobbs for a second opinion and after running tests found out 'alternator' was 'good' but needed to replace starter, battery, and some springy belt thang (I don't know crap about cars ) - what I do know they saved my butt nearly $3,000 ! Plus, I felt good at least giving my money to a mom and pop biz!!! Seriously, real people and easy to deal with, never felt like I was be sold or upsold on anything. Based on a supposed good reputation, I took my car in for what I thought was a power drainage issue and was informed that my 6 month old battery was bad and they said there was no vampiric drain that it was just the battery...and they replaced the battery.Within a month I started having the same power drainage problems again that I had before, took the car back to my old , reliable shop, Bay's Auto in Ballard, where they told me that I had a bad battery! They replaced it, for half of what Hilltop had charged me, and it's been running like a champ for well over a year now, better than ever.I can only deduct that Hobbs had replaced my old bad battery with yet another old, bad, shitty battery.Not recommended.Besides that, the receptionist there has been surly and rude every single visit. read more

I haver never done business with a more honest, consistent, thorough, dependable and complete automobile service than Hobbs Hilltop Automotive. I've been using them for years and I trust them completely. They never try to sell you services you don't need, and you never have to take your car back to fix something that should have been fixed initially. Dave, Laura, Loren and the gang are top-notch! I drive 35,000 miles a year and I've never been "steered" wrong by them. I depend on them. Here's a rejoinder to some of the one-star reviewers: They do NOT nickel-and-dime their customers; just try to get an oil change at Jiffy Lube at near the price charged by Hobbs for topping fluids, rotating tires and using synthetic oil- not to mention taking test drives of your vehicle as a quality control measure after their servicing. It's not going to happen. All of their rates are very fair and reasonable. I can't speak to the "attitude" commentary, but every business has their own personality. My car had broken down in the parking lot across from the shop and I walked into the office expecting a greeting from the front lady and she was avoiding eye contact initially. After a few moments she finally addressed me and was far from helpful and appeared annoyed that I was there (not the best business plan). I simply asked if I would be able to get my car towed to the shop for a repair and she told me they're completely full. She didn't offer any other solutions for me. Yes I know if they're full they're full, but I was willing to have my car there for a few days until they had an available day to fix it.... I do not recommend this business. read more

I should have followed my instincts. Called for an oil change quote and was told $59 for "standard" but could be more based on type of oil my vehicle needed. Well, that was the first flag but still moved forward with the appointment because of convenient location. Got a call that my car was ready but was told they had to install an oil filter cap because they broke the one on my car indicating it was screwed on too tight; that charge was $61.82. My vehicle holds 5.20 quarts but on the receipt, they've listed 6.70 quarts (4 are included in the oil change; addl charge for 2.70 quarts). I did not ask for washer fluid but the receipt has a $5.90 charge for it. read more

Wow. Is it 1950? I mean, I know i'm only a woman, but could you talk to me as if I were a HUMAN BEING too!? Had them do some work on my vehicle a while back - it seemed expensive - but the work was necessary. It defiantly wasn't a "feel good" experience, but I know it's car mechanics not a massage and it was pretty eventless. Then I called a few months later to see if they could replace my front headlamp and asked basic questions like presumed cost, time etc. I didn't get the name of the gentleman I spoke to but he was so rude to me. I opened up the phone call by letting him know my name, that I had taken my car there in the past, told him my make model and year. I would think that letting him know that I had done business there before would bode well for me, heck maybe even jog his memory. But NO- He talked down to me and asked me questions as if I were stupid. He didn't bother retaining any of the information that I told him at the top of my phone call so I had to repeat myself. Maybe he was having a bad day, but come on... It's 2016: women are people too. And customer service is the only thing small businesses have left. read more

I actually have been here before for service in the past which was fine. However, I stopped by today and I was trying to replace the engine air filter in my elderly Mom's car. I stepped into the office (two men and a woman were sitting there) and none really seemed like they wanted to be there or help me. Ok, that's fine. I even brought the air filter with me and was willing to replace it myself, I just didn't have the right size socket wrench to open the housing (2 bolts) that covers the air filter under the front hood. I asked if someone could help me or since my car was parked in front of one of their stalls, if I could borrow a socket wrench and replace it myself, I just got a response that we don't loan out tools and to go to O'Reilly's up in Ballard, that was it. Clearly I wasn't trying to borrow a socket wrench to take back to my house, I had my car in front and the new air filter with me in the office. Just very rude, grumpy people. I get it, we all have our days. But when I was there very politely asking for assistance and all three people in the office were behaving like that, that's not good service at any level. Sad that a neighborhood establishment would treat any customer like that. On a positive note, Marqueen Auto around the corner from Queen Anne Blvd had great customer service and helped me out. They were less staffed, super busy, and took the time to help me out. Thank you Marqueen. Word of mouth is huge in any business/industry. The little things go a long way. I came in last minute and had the pleasure of meeting Dave. I just needed my reverse tail light replaced. Turns out the other 3 bulbs were on the verge of blacking out. Dave was able to replace all of them in 10 minutes and for much MUCH cheaper than where I had been the last few times. Friendly to chat with, realistic expectations, and transparent about pricing. This place has never let me down. They are trustworthy (after getting a second and third opinion, their estimate was still the lowest on two separate occasions) and do an excellent job. They are busy so it can be hard to get your car in at the last minute, but a good mechanic is hard to find and they are well worth it. Overcharged! Charged for piddly things like washer fluid (I didn't need nor ask for any, yet, they "topped me off?" I was charged because they reset my oil change indicator (which I could have pushed two buttons on my dash and have done that myself [some favor!]) They used "top quality synthetic oil" and didn't bother to ask me what I have been using or prefer to use. They always manage to fit in our car within a day or two, and call promptly to let me know what needs to be done. These guys are AMAZING. I have a 2011 Audi which gets serviced at the dealership, but for things the dealership isn't responsible for...Hobbs steps in with unbelievable customer service. They communicate immediately, effectively and positively. The price quote for the things I needed to be sorted was far better than my comparisons. I somewhat feel guilty for shopping around because Hobbs has come through for me a couple times now. When you need to take your car to a mechanic this is a great place. They are very honest and they don't drag work on. I'm a working contractor and really NEED my truck. Hobb's automotive took my truck in on a Monday and I was back in it Tuesday . Granted, it wasn't a big fix issue, but some shops just keep your car just because they have it. I've been going to Hobbs for years. When I first got my car (16 years ago) I took it to Hob's for maintenance, and Jim Hobbs suggested that I should take it to a cheap place for ordinary oil changes and bring it to Hobbs when I was concerned about performance or operation. He saved me a lot of money. They are beyond honest, and when they do work - like brakes or transmission - they're fast, thorough, and do quality work. I can't say enough good things about these guys. I have had highly questionable service both times I have taken my car to Hobbs. I will not be taking my car back. The first time I took my car here, it was because I had failed an emissions test. There was a broken camshaft censor, which was replaced by Hobbs. They not only charged me for the part and the labor, but an additional $135 because my vehicle failed the emissions test. This was a completely unnecessary charge for a service that they did not perform. When I brought this to their attention, they refused to waive the fee. My first bill was $428. The second time I went to Hobbs, it was for an oil change. This is a simple procedure on my car, and should've cost about $50. When I dropped off my car, an employee mentioned that the engine air filter would be replaced if necessary. I told him that it was just replaced, so it shouldn't be a problem. When I picked my car up from Hobbs, I found out that they had changed the engine air filter. I showed them the invoice from a shop that recorded it being changed 2200 miles ago. The Hobbs employee insisted that the filter was dirty and that I had been driving in dust and dirt (which was not true). On top of this charge, they replaced 2 lights that had gone out. I did not ask for this to be done, and I was not told that this was being done. My second bill was $123. In both of these instances, not only was I charged for services that I did not ask for, but I received customer service that was well below average. read more

After mechanic nightmares that I'm sure we've all had, it's such a relief to know that I can rely on Hobbs to do great work at a fair (not cheap) price. Other places will do things cheaper, but if it isn't done as well or they upsell you on things you don't really need, then it's really not a better deal. The guys at Hobbs do good work, and they are up front and accurate with how they represent cost and timing. I have never posted a review on a site before, but having read the previous reviews (and them helping me feel confident in choosing Hobbs in the first place) - I feel it is my duty to present another point of view. There are two things I look for in a mechanic: (1) Honesty and (2) Attention to Detail. I am willing to pay a premium for both of these services. The newest car I have ever owned is a 1990, so having a good mechainc is a must. Unfortunately, Hobbs did not deliver on either honesty or attention to detail. Nevertheless, they charge a premium price. It must be because it is in Queen Anne. In general, I would like for your mechanic to present me with the "this will fix it" minimum option and the "this is what I would do if it was my daughter's car" option. Not Hobbs - it is one price, one strategy - and it is the most expensive one. I brought my car in because it was idling high. After $680 the problem is not fixed. But, while replacing the idle motor, Hobbs inexplicably locked the shaft of my headlight switch into an unmovable position. I didn't notice it until I had to drive at night - and couldn't get my headlights on. So I had to cancel that trip. Also, my left/right indicators are suddenly not working either. I call Hobbs to have them investigate - which to their credit they say bring it right in. With hours that close at 5:30, I have to leave work early to get there. So I get the call the next day - "Sorry about the headlight thing, we fixed it. Unfortunately we can't see how we had anything at all to do with you indicator lights suddenly not working. It will cost $240 to fix it." Great. I pick up the car and see how they fixed the headlight shaft. Umm, by removing a piece that hasn't caused a problem in the 22 previous years that it has been in place. Is that fixing the problem or is that the quickest and cheapest fix that they can do becuase it is on their dime? Now, I have a bare metal shaft to pull my headlights on and off because I can not longer attach the knob. A note on price. I had a new transmission and clutch put in this car for $1600 at another shop. Then I had a new idle motor and my left/right indicator switch fixed for $1000 at Hobbs. To me, it deosn't seem like these two sets of repairs should be in the same order of magnitude. Sorry Hobbs - not going back ever again. read more

If you are looking for an honest, responsible place to take your car, this is it. We recently brought in our Honda Civic Hybrid, which is out of warranty, for a problem with transmission slippage. Much to our surprise, we got a call from the owner about 3 hours later to tell us that his mechanic thought the warranty had been extended for the problem our car was having, so he looked it up on line and it was. He thought we should just take the car to the dealer since they'd fix it for free and replacing the transmission would be very expensive. We will never take our car anywhere else after this experience. read more

Cannot beat these guys! They are as honest with services, information, and prices as auto shops come! I live across town now, but would not take my car anywhere else. Originally went in out of convenience (Queen Anne), but have also compared prices and found Hobbs tough to beat. Dave is excellent! He understands that at this point my 1999 Nissan Maxima with 286,000 miles has more sentimental than economic value, and I would entrust it to nobody else to fix.
