Originally this was going to be a 1 star review however Aiden changed all that. I originally was approached by a gentleman who was bald and glasses (sorry did not offer his name) with a black polo shirt. I explained my project and he seemed disinterested in the idea and gave short one word answered and walked away. Seemed to care more about sorting rocket engines and helping a customer who was looking at a new rc car than myself or my son. Went to ask someone else for help. Aiden listened to our ideas and we needed. He went to work to provide us with the materials we needed and was very kind to myself and my son Aiden single handedly saved our experience. From my observations the black polo shirt gentleman seemed to be management - where I think Aiden would have been a better manager. Hobby stores are hard to come by these days and this experience could have easily converted me to seek guidance online, however Aiden changed this. Please go to this store for Aiden. I drove about 30 minutes out to HobbyTown Corona specifically because I was told yesterday that the "Squeezy's" would be available today after 4 PM once they were scanned into the system and put out. I rearranged my schedule and made time to come back based on what your staff told me. When I arrived today, I was told they still weren't out yet. When I asked if there was anything they could do since I was specifically instructed to come back at that time, the employee at the front basically acted indifferent and just said there was nothing they could do. I've been in retail for years, and entering inventory into a system is not some massive impossible task. This honestly came across as laziness and a complete lack of concern for customer satisfaction. Don't tell customers to come back at a specific time if you're not actually prepared to follow through. Traffic and gas prices in Southern California are terrible. People are spending real time and money to come support your business, so at least be considerate of that when making promises to customers. I understand inventory processing takes time, but communication and effort matter. A simple apology or attempt to help would have gone a long way. The store is large and packed with product, but there also weren't many customers there, which makes the lack of urgency even more frustrating. The owner should seriously consider improving management and customer service standards because experiences like this are exactly why customers stop coming back. read more

A few months ago, I started coming to this HobbyTown as my go-to store for Gundam kits, Warhammer, modeling supplies, paints, and more. From my very first visit, I noticed a beautiful, hard-to-find item on display, one I was immediately interested in buying. I asked about purchasing it and was told it wasn't for sale because it was on layaway for another customer. Months passed, and the item remained on display, unclaimed. HobbyTown's own policy states that items on hold should be reshelved after 60 days. Each time I visited, I asked if it was available to purchase, as it was clearly well past that window. I was finally told that if I came in person, the owner could decide whether to sell it to me. So, I drove over an hour this morning, only to be told the item is now being held for an employee. That's unacceptable. It's unethical for a business to showcase a product, ignore their own policies, and refuse to sell it to customers because they're indefinitely holding it for an unnamed employee. Not only was my time wasted, but it left a bad impression. I've since purchased the item on Amazon and will no longer support a store that hides behind policies they don't even follow, especially when it comes to hoarding rare items for staff while misleading customers by keeping them on display. read more

Went to look for new tires and wheels for my Original Traxxas Rustler (1st Gen). The car came ready to run out of the box with Pro Comp 2.2 wheels and tires, front and rear. So I go to Hobby Town and ask about 2.2 tires for my original Traxxas Rustler and they tell me that a rustler never came with 2.2 tires and then the woman working there decided to tell me that she's been in the business for more than 20 years and Rustlers come with 2.8 Wheels. I said no my car came with 2.2 and then she says I must have changed them. Nope they came out of the box with 2.2 inch tires. So 20+ years of experience, she still doesn't know what she's talking about. I guess you're never too old to learn. Believe your customer next time they tell you something. I'm always looking for new hobby stores near where I live so after doing a quick search on Yelp, HobbyTown came up. I arrived here on a weekend with my sister and man, was it busy and packed. The store has a pleasantly solid Gunpla selection and there were many in stock. I would say that the kits are decently priced as well. I managed to snag two boxes of Gunpla and I'm hoping to go back another time to add more to my collection. read more

Horrible customer service. Went in to the store to pick up a small item. I was ignored upon entry, I was ignored after walking with the employee after he finished with a customer. Employee Chris. Watched him vacuum and continue to not look up. When finally did come over, I asked him for something very specific. I included the brand name and the title of the item. He then unprompted begins to lecture me on the mechanics of a RC car. I never told him what I was doing or why I was doing it. Very bizarre. When I stopped him explained I didn't need an explanation, I just needed to know where the specific item was he continued to lecture me and question what I was doing, when in fact he had no information outside of the word "spur gear". I then pointed out the absurdity of our conversation, I asked for an item and he refused to tell me where it is, while giving a condescending look and talking down to me like I'm going to ruin something that he was not fully aware of what I'm doing with the item I am requesting. He then generally haphazardly pointed to the area it was in. Of course he didn't walk me to it. I was then helped by a woman who helped after having to explain the weird interaction with Chris. Then a 3rd person came up and started asking what I was using the grease for and why. I came in for a $2 item and knew the exact name of it and what do I get, bad service, sarcastic responses, automatic lecturing like I'm a child. Took 3 people and a ton of questions to get me the $2 item I was looking for. Keep in mind, I knew what I wanted when I walked it we weren't figuring it out together. If you want to be talked down to by Chris and get a disappointing look from him, the look of pity, while asking for a $2 item then this is your place. All Chris had to do was walk me to the item, ask me about my project and my goals. Very simple. Instead, lost a customer before I even got started. Probably 3k a year in business. This is why people watch YouTube videos and order from Amazon. The funniest part about all of this I was warned by my friend who is into that the hobbyist are pretentious. NO REFUNDS OR RETURNS. EXCHANGES ONLY. This is the constant message one typically sees, hears, is told directly by employees in a store that does not do cash returns because, surprise, surprise, it's NOT common. In fact, every time we've been to a store that does not do refunds, they are VERY up-front about this policy. Every. Single. Time. Does Hobby Town follow this practice? No, not at all. Instead, the notice is placed above the sightline of the average person. There is a notice on the receipt... that you get... wait for it... AFTER the purchase has already been made. We came in to get a few fun things for our family. We ended up spending over $600 here. A couple of days later, we changed our mind about an RC car we were thinking about for my father and came to return it. UNOPENED. UNTOUCHED. EXACTLY AS WE HAD RECEIVED IT. Imagine our SHOCK when we were informed that this Hobby Town does not engage in cash refunds. Not even a refund with a restocking fee. I would have been tiffed, but I would have been able to make the move I wanted. So we were told that we were now stuck with a $345+ item that we no longer wanted. My husband and I are collectors and we often shop around to find the exact item we want. Well, now that item is gone, and we have no trust in these people to continue doing business with them. I would not trust this shop with anything I would want to be repaired or worked on in any way. If you'll lie about this, what happens when I bring this To be VERY clear, this return policy is NOT the policy of Hobby Town as a chain. Just this franchise. Oh, and it appears we don't really take this policy seriously enough to update it on our website, so it appears lying to the customer is now okay in this new reality. Excuse me???! When we called management to discuss the misunderstanding, we found the gentleman on the other end of the phone to be evasive, unaccountable, and unapologetic. Please, read this with all the dripping sarcasm you can imagine. In what world does a HOBBY shop refuse to do refunds? Sketchy computer store? Sure. Secondhand tech sellers? Yeah, that makes sense. Offer Up? A Garage sale? Yep, all those make sense. A hobby shop? Yeah, that's a no from us. Every other shop in that strip has a normal return policy. If I want a STEM kit for my kid or another Gundam to build, I know where to go, and it's not Hobby Town. I am sick and tired of businesses setting up shop in OUR community and ripping off the community they say they're here to serve. They are thirsty, greedy, and pinch over the smallest penny. Stop using inflation as an excuse! That's old and tired and we all know it's at best an overstated excuse at this point. We deserve better and we demand better. Hobby Town can go back to wherever they came from. They aren't worth the space they inhabit. For our part, we will not be returning. Sure, there are some cool things in the shop, but at least on Amazon I can guarantee a fair return policy and I know what I'm getting. This is why local businesses are struggling. They don't help with warranties, once you leave the store it's in you, and some of the guys either don't tent to give you advice, or just don't j ow anything about rc cars. Let me start by saying that if you are going to Hobby Town, make sure you see Brandon. Brandon is an asset to this store and he by himself is worthy of 5 stars. The rest of the staff, not so much. After spending $1500 at this store on RC car and extras, it broke the next day. Not the stores fault it broke, but when coming back to the store, we were treated like we were stupid that we did not know what was wrong with the car and they tried to blame us, stating we dropped the remote which caused the issue. The issue had nothing to do with the remote, which by the way had not been dropped. They did finally show us what the issue was and how we could fix it ourselves and sent us on our way. The fix did not work, so we took it back again. The issue was "fixed" but when we took the car out again, it broke again, this time stripping the gears. So we are back again to get the gears replaced, which should not have broken in the first place, and were quoted 2-3 weeks to fix them! Maybe I'm wrong but if you "fixed" something and it breaks the next day in the same place you "fixed", how is that my fault and something that should take 2-3 weeks to fix?!?! Would I recommend Hobby Town? Probably not, unless you talk to Brandon, who is the only person there that did not treat us like idiots for being new to the world of RC cars. He explains things and does not make you feel stupid. Everyone else, well let's just say, it doesn't seem like they appreciate your business. Ok, I honestly don't understand all the negative reviews. I came to this shop yesterday and today, spoke with 3 different staff members, all of whom were very knowledgeable and professional. During my first visit, I almost bought a Traxxas 4x2 Slash. However, the salesperson introduced me to an Arrma vehicle. I told him that I would have to do some homework on my own to make an informed decision. The salesperson was not pushy at all, and he said call anytime if I have any questions. Today, I bought a Senton, and two different people answered all my questions ranging from potential overheating issues to Lipo battery 101s. I highly, highly recommend this shop to anyone who is interested in getting into RC. read more

I'd highly recommend avoiding this store because of their no refund policy. Yesterday I purchased an rc car that was dangerously defective. I believed I would be able to call the store and get a refund or exchange. However, after calling them they told me that they do not accept returns for any reason. I felt quite frustrated from this and decieved, as I feel that new customers should be warned about it. Pretty much every other retailer accepts returns and even the online site accepts returns. Long time customer and I have spent a lot of money at this store. I like supporting local business, but I will never shop at this store again. I went in with my son to purchase a battery and a bunch of other stuff for my son's rc car. While taking with the sales associate he suggested I purchase an aftermarket Lectron battery instead of the original traxxas one we were replacing. The connector was the same as the one we had at home. The sales associate never mentioned anything about needing a different kind of charger based on the battery type. We charged the battery which swelled up and almost burst. I took the battery back and asked what happened and inquired about a replacement. With annoyance all over their faces (especially the bigger bearded one) they told me the sales associate should have explained the need for a new charger and told me I was out of luck and could not get a return or exchange. It almost seemed like it gave them pleasure to deny me. Obviously I was a father that knows little about the hobby and spends good money keeping his children's rc cars up and running. Based on this last experience, I will never spend another penny there and I look forward to sharing this experience with others and preventing future customers from shopping there. The manager doesn't understand how math works. It's too bad this place is poorly run. I enjoyed popping in for games and modeling supplies. On my last visit picked up about $200 of product. Had one item that was 50% off $30, marked $18. While I was checking out manager both insisted it was right and "was marked down enough." I wouldn't have cared but instead of just acknowledging the error she doubled down and was confrontational. It's silly to lose a customer over 3 bucks but why go somewhere with awful service when there's 10 stores nearby with the same products? Everyone who works here has been great. My son is 12 and obsessed with RC cars right now. He loves coming into the store and looking at everything and buying parts. When he has to ask for help finding something, everyone is really patient with him and they don't just dismiss him because he's young. I was stupid that I didn't check online first, the same night I found out the same kit was selling for $79.99 on lego.com, Amazon, bestbuy and walmart. On the hobby town website they it was listed for $99.99. I called in & due to their no refund policy. They would only honor the $99.99 price from their website. It would be a $10 store credit, and...I have to drive 15 miles back to the place. Lesson learned. Again...be aware and check online prices first before you commit to buy in store, once you pay then there's no going back. I couldn't believe how unprofessional the front desk girl and manager (owner?) of the place was. I'm not into RC at all, but since the business is called 'Hobbytown' I asked if they had any of a variety of skill toys I personally like using, which indeed are the text definition of what a hobby is. Instead of a simple "no, we don't have that" I get looks of bewilderment and harsh passive aggressiveness for daring to ask if they have more than the most popular of individual hobbies in stock. Completely unnecessary way to treat new customers, and yes I get it you probably have a lot of socially inept or autistic men coming in and out of the place but that doesn't give you an excuse to look down on any customer that walks in with questions that you personally deem "stupid." I would like to think that if you're going to work at a place designed for niche interests that you yourself would be tolerant to those that have them but I guess I'm mistaken. It just blows my mind that employees of any business catered to fun and personal enjoyment would treat customers poorly. We have enough misery in the world to worry about, so why add to that ESPECIALLY in this kind of environment? What is wrong with you? Also, I thought that the previous reviews regarding racism were overblown but low-and-behold I did witness a bitter conversation happening between another employee and customer of the said topic. The fact that we're still seeing behaviors like that in this day and age in nothing short of unacceptable and should say a lot about the state of this business. Unless you're local and a die-hard lover of RC or model toy stuff (can't say much about the selection in stock since I don't know much about either), buy your stuff at a different enthusiast store. These guys are great, I Called earlier today and told him I was having a problem with my nitro RC buggy and they said they are in the process of moving and their service department is shut down, although if I bring my car and they would be able to help me out. I asked if there was a cost to have them help me out and they said no... Just bring it in if we can figure it out and help you out for 15 or 20 minutes there is no charge. I thought that was very thoughtful and I started heading over there. there was an elderly and very knowledgeable lady who asked me if I needed help when I was standing in line and she told me what was wrong and told one of the younger employees to take apart some sets Cruz and Allen keys on a dog bone gear and put it back together, after they did it for me... I asked him what do I owe them and they said nothing. Now I'm back up and running strong and I couldn't be more thankful.
