I stopped in for Lunch. This was my first time trying the Hoffman House. The city of Rockford is very limited for Buffet- style of American Foods. My first intentions were to order a to-go meal. But after I saw how the Dining room was so clean and quite roomy, I decided to stay for lunch. I ordered the lunch special of the chicken, soup and salad all you can eat. The server was exceptional and the food was very good. The chicken and mashed potatoes needed to have a little more seasoning but they were overall fresh, crispy, and very hot in temperature. While the dining room had quite a lengthy wait, we chose to sit in the sports bar. We were able to order off the regular menu, but they also have a menu specifically for the sports bar. We both ordered the Fried Fish, which came with choice of potato, Hoffman House's famous rolls and honey butter and the equally famous Salad Well, which was by far our favorite part. The salad well has a variety of salads, vegetables, cheese and breadsticks, the spinach salad with warm bacon dressing. There is literally something for everyone. They also have a pot of clam chowder available on Friday nights. I always get the soup, then remember they add an herb to it that I don't particularly care for. The fish is not the best I've ever had, but I loved the salad bar and rolls. The restaurant is a part of Rockford Heritage, as I remember going there 40 years ago for Prom. Their specialty is Prime Rib. They have a private room for small gatherings, a fireplace in the middle of the restaurant. There was a live keyboard player when we were there that particular evening. Along with the sports bar, they offer slot machines. The waitstaff was attentive, although extremely busy. The menu is a bit pricey, but it's worth the experience. read more

Terrible. My wife and I started to go to the Hoffman House when it was at the bowling alley 40 years ago. We moved to Wisconsin and couldn't wait to get back after over 20 years last Saturday night when my wife and family were staying at the staybridge next door. What a terrible disappointment. Escargot appetizer was burnt, ordered prime rib rare, came out medium and cold, tough and flavorless, baked potato was cold, salad bar completely bland, dessert mediocre. Not again to this restaurant, I don't understand why it was so crowded with such mediocre food. Contact me if you want to hear more. Underwhelmed. In the day and age of interesting, healthy and flavorful cuisine, their menu and restaurant looks like it has been the same as it was in the 1970s. Prime rib was good, I've had better. It was cooked right. Three of my family members ordered seafood. Each of these entrees were clearly overcooked, and swimming in butter. Two of our party got au gratin potatoes, which looked like a pile of melted cheese. The warm fried bread rolls were good, but the sweet should have been served on the side. We too heard this was the best prime rib in the city. I hadn't been to the Hoffman House for many years. It is in the Holiday Inn building which made me wonder about the quality. The interior was nice looking, very warm, with a fireplace in the center of a large room. There is a large salad bar with many options. Everything was very appetizing, fresh and good. There are many cold salads and toppings to choose from besides your typical lettuce and toppings - even a warm onion bacon dressing. The rolls they serve seemed to be like non-sweet light donuts rather than bread, and are covered in powdered sugar. They call it fried bread, and the jury is still out on it. They taste good and come out warm, but are a decadent start to a meal. The prime rib was VERY good, although, as someone else stated - not the best I've ever tasted. The scallops were also VERY good, although not the best we've had. They had a delicious looking dessert tray, be we didn't indulge. My family had an amazing experience at Hoffman House and it was thanks to our server, Phyllis! Phyllis greeted us with a smile and was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and kept us informed (the bar was busy so our drinks took a little longer, but she let us know immediately). Different ones in our group had the prime rib, filet, and jumbo shrimp and each meal was delicious. And shout out to Phyllis for bringing me a little ice cream dessert with candles to celebrate my birthday! Hoffman House is attached to the Holiday Inn. There is no atmosphere or scene to brag about, and around 1:00 a.m. after a long Saturday night, not much of a crowd either. It was quiet, but it was exactly what we needed after visiting some other questionable establishments in downtown Rockford. I had a few gin & ginger ales, my friends had some beers. The prices are more than reasonable for a hotel bar, and we were grateful that it existed and was still open. Hoffman House isn't a destination, but it's a nice option to have when you aren't familiar with the area and closing time is near. read more

I organized a party of 14 to go the Hoffman House on a Monday night. They were very helpful in setting up our reservations and when we arrived our tables were ready. Service: Our service was great. We had one primary server who took good care of us, while there was a second person who filled water, etc. Price: Most all of the entrees were above $18 and many ran above $20. Food: This is where my rating gets sticky because some of the food was outstanding. The fried bread was excellent and the salad bar was definitely worth 4 stars (their stew was amazing!). However...and this is where the entire thing falls apart... I ordered a sirloin steak, fried shrimp with a twice-baked potato. Steak: Hoffman House overtly prides themselves on aged beef. Well, this steak was absolutely flavor-less. I am not over stating this. I asked my wife to taste it and she agreed. I knew I had meat in my mouth but there was no flavor. It was about the worst steak I can remember eating in a very long time. Shrimp: I received 4 battered and fried shrimp. While they were okay, I honestly have had better fried shrimp at Long John Silvers Twice-baked potato: I ate about four bites. It was SO DRY that I couldn't eat it. Besides that the taste was terrible. So this is a pretty rough review and I'm not trying to be overly critical. It was an experience of very good and very bad. They have a large salad and soup bar that you can add to your lunch for $4.99, or if you order a dinner entree it is included with your meal. The salad bar is not limited to greens and dressing, but it also has Italian salad, broccoli salad, potato salad, ice cream and additional cool casseroles that are sure to fill you up before your meal gets to the table! I highly recommend trying their chili at the soup bar. It has a bit of a sweetness to it which separates it from the rest! I had my wedding reception here and everything was beyond perfect! The staff, food and room set up was beyond perfect! From the first inquiry call to the day of the wedding, Hoffman House was so accommodating and attentive. I had no worries and no stress. Legendary service from ALL of the staff. Ashley in the office was always prompt with responses and always kept me in the know of next steps. The Banquet Supervisor - another Ashley, was so attentive with what my guests would want. The dining staff were always assertive and hands on. I honestly can't think of a time where I asked of anything, because they knew what my guests and I wanted/needed. Our food was HEAVENLY! The meats were cooked to perfection - full of flavor and juicy. Vegetables were crisp and fresh. I could have eaten every side dish, salad and meat, as their own individual meal because each thing was my favorite thing. We decided to have an open bar at our reception. As you would expect, a line would form. But the moment it looked as if it had 5 people or more, Ashley jumped in to help the bartender. The line was never long, and everyone was VERY HAPPY! I came here twice in the same week on a Monday and Saturday night and they were 2 different experiences. It kind of reminds me of a place where everybody knows your name. Pretty dark inside, some may find it hard to read the menu. There is always a host but I noticed that the servers are mostly the ones seating guests. A fellow Yelper's review compared this place to Lawry's and I completely disagree, its not even on the same level. I ordered my prime rib medium but it came dry and medium well. Saturday Night Wasn't very excited about coming here again but thought, why not I like their salad bar. I decided I wasn't going to get the prime rib again, but after looking at everything else in the menu I ended up getting it again. The Friday fish is good, the salad bar is a show stopper and the fried bread, wow. The staff has been there for years, always a good sign in my opinion. This review is really for Scoreboard Sports Bar, which is connected to Hoffman House. I was recently at Scoreboard with some Rockford friends, and we had a really fun time. The bar has a pool table and electronic dart boards. We played darts for a good couple hours, which was fun. There are plenty of TVs in the bar for game-watching. I would say the crowd was a little older. There were a few younger people there, but not too many. The service was OK. The bartender wasn't that friendly, but she got it done. The onion strings were below average had weird texture and fake taste. (regular onion rings would be better). The rolls and butter are mouth watering delicious. Plenty of food for lunch. Service was excellent and I could observe staff at all tables were attentive. $8.99 for sandwich and side was a good value. Atmosphere on a Tuesday at noon is mostly groups of older retired women. A couple of months ago we had a Women's conference here.. after eating lunch.. about an hour a few women became ill...diarrhea stomach cramps..Common thread was the salad. Last Wednesday my girlfriend who was visiting out of town ate lunch and within the hour became ill same thing diarrhea stomach cramps. So I couldn't eat the fish that I ordered and had to eat the hubby's prime rib. It was juicy and tender. They forgot our side dishes too. Ever Ever After All young people dream of their fairytale weddings. Our daughter and son-in-law were no different. After an emotional 'surprise' engagement in Galena in May 2019, we began the exciting process of planning a July 2020 wedding. Like many others, COVID changed things drastically and caused a delay of their wedding to July 2021. Along with all the wonderful memories and the great vendors who worked with us due to COVID - we did still face some major challenges. For those of you planning a wedding or special celebration, I suggest you take note so you are not faced with the same disappointments. Even though we had already paid Hoffman House over $15,000.00 for the wedding since 2019 - and we had to postpone due to COVID - we were informed by Henrici's Hoffman House catering that they were increasing our prices by $6.00 per meal (even for vegetarian meals). This was just 3 weeks before the wedding. Having other friends in the business, we started making calls to other caterers in the Rockford, Rockton/Roscoe, southern Wisconsin area - NONE of them were increasing prices for people under contract and impacted by COVID. After addressing this with the owner, Mike Prosser, we asked for reconsideration and ultimately a 50-50 split. He would not do anything. Unfortunately - what do you do with your wedding 3 weeks before the big day? Wedding day - We paid the extra money and here's what we received: 1. Dangerous Lack of Attention to Detail - Allergen meals Guests received nut and dairy dinners (regardless of the per table/per person selection and allergens provided to the staff) This could have been a HUGE problem if other guests hadn't questioned it midway through the meal. Allergic reactions are extremely dangerous. 2. Understaffed a. Limited servers resulted in undercooked meals and not everyone at a table got their meal to eat together b. Bartenders had limited knowledge of what was available and how to make basic cocktails. c. Bar closed early - not by a lot, but still we did not receive our full time. d. The cake was served on tiny trays - 10 piece at a time - to a line of guests waiting. In addition, we had to request more multiple times. Not very effective for over 250 guests 3. Food was Average a. After requesting all extra meals (for guests who were unable to attend at the last minute) be delivered to the family at the end of the night - we were told the vendors ate them. Over 12 meals @ $61 each (including appetizers) were NEVER received by our family. We understood we would need to eat the $28 per person for the bar - but what a disappointment on not receiving the meals we paid for. Each vendor meal is $30 each and we even ordered extra of these. What happened to all these meals? The vendors received their own meals - which were paid for separately (@$30 each) -- and Wedding party witnessed people in the kitchen eating.....wonder where our meals went. b. Coffee was cold - lukewarm at best. As you may or may not know - many businesses have received assistance from the government during COVID. This included Henrici's, Hoffman House, Firehouse and Ishnala. You can find this information at https://www.federalpay.org/paycheck-protection-program . You can read more about how this money is forgiven by the government as long as you use it for payroll. Despite this disappointing situation - Jay, Jill, Cory, Stacie, Carly and Nikki were all very professional and helpful in preparing for the day. Unfortunately, the reception coordinator appeared to have not been prepped with all the details or timeline for the evening.
