I visited Hoffman's today with my 3 year old daughter. She had the absolute best time learning about the different creatures they have. The owner Michael was so hands on and went out of his way to make it a special experience for both her and I. We were both able to pet, hold, and fire off as many questions as we could think off without feeling like a nuisance. She already wants to go back. I strongly recommend Hoffman's to any parent that wants to introduce their child to reptiles and the responsibilities that come with it. I went into the shop hoping to look at some amazing animals but the moment I walked in it felt like the store was running down and the animals looked neglected the snakes on bare minimum with no hides and empty water dishes and lizards looking skinny and none responsive. I understand that most are rescues and probably not in the best shape but I would hope for at least the basic needs for a snake (proper lighting/heating, substrate, and clean water bowls) which I did not see. read more

I was here about 2 weeks ago. It was very sad seeing this once amazing place, so run down and disgusting. Cages with the bottoms rotted out covered with pieces of cardboard. 98% of the animals had no water, no spaces to hide. Snakes laying in their dried out bowls, which looked like they hadn't had water in days. The smell of dirty unkempt cages was disgusting. The store itself is falling apart. All just hiding in corners of their cages, wishing they had water and a half decent habitat to live in. Lack of care and concern for these helpless creatures is all I saw. Should be shut down and all animals taken somewhere else to be cared for properly. read more

Literally emaciated and dead animals when I walked in. There was an ornate uromastyx emaciated and weak laying on the dead body of its cage mate. I told the employee I needed a feeder rat for my ball python and I needed him to show me this lizard wasn't dead and sure enough it was dead. There was multiple bearded dragons and tegus in the same state. Emaciated and weak. The place is a disgrace. I've been coming here for a while to get live rats for my snake. Despite the awful smell and dirty conditions inside the store, I continued to come weekly since this was the only place in the area selling live feeders. Unfortunately, I recently discovered that my snake had mites, almost certainly introduced from this store--either from the rats I purchased or the unsanitary environment itself. This is completely unacceptable. I wanted to like this place, but I need to give a serious warning: do not purchase reptiles or feeders here. The conditions are filthy, and the health risks to your pets are very real. read more

Enclosures lacked the bare minimum. Some snakes didn't have hides and some only had about a cm of substrate. I understand that reptile shops will come with its' smells, but to try and cover it up with incense is extremely harmful to reptiles' small and fragile lungs. Don't be surprised if the reptile you bring home from Hoffmans ends up having respiratory issues. It's a shame because I would love to have a small business I could support in good conscience closer by rather than driving to Berkeley for feeders. read more

They take good care of all their animals on display regardless of their species. They have a good selection and the new owner is as professional and polite as the former owner. Very knowledgable too and seem to be cleaning as much as possible in between customers before I walk in. read more

Very friendly and knowledgeable. I felt confident bringing home a bearded dragon as a first timer. They encouraged me to call if I had doubts or more questions. The staff is very kind. I've been here a few times since the new owner has taken over. I was really hoping for some sweeping changes. But it still heavily smells of feces, the reptile enclosures are bare. Very few tanks have hides in them, most have piles of feces, several contained more animals than there should be, and several of the animals did not look well. read more

I walked to Hoffman's just now and I will say it is in sad shape all you can smell is ammonia from dirty cages. I was only going to see the pet rats that were available. I WISH I KNEW WHO TO REPORT THIS SHOP TO! 4 female rats all in one tiny hide shelter . NO FOOD, NO CHEW BLOCKS OR EVEN A DROP OF WATER IN THEIR WATER BOTTLE same with the 4 adult guinea pigs right next to the rats . I reach on the out side of where there were bottle was and they all started squealing as the empty ball rattled around. Probably haven't had water for a few days! Yes, I called the employee over quietly and pointed those things out to him. Even helped him grab the water bottle from the rats cage so he could fill them . I could visibly see the rats were infested with mites/ lice . I knew now what to look for as my 2 girls I bought 5 years ago were also infested with the same warm blooded mites read more

Hoffmann's is stealing from you. I've shopped here for over 5 years now, I would come in about once a month to buy those meal worms/super worms to give to my animals. normally buying 100 at a time, I remember when the employees would have a huge container and count them out one by one, until they had shipment of 50 per container. I don't know how many of us are buying those things but I'm guessing a lot. ever tried counting them? no? well I do, and you never get 50 worms. I'm shocked when I actually recieve the amount they say you are getting. once there were only 20 worms in that container! 20! its kind of insane that 30 super worms were missing. Also when they are charging you 35 cents a worm, I'm just trying to receive what I paid for. The old owner would look at me weird but was nice and just gave me the missing/already paid for worms. the new owner told my mother he wont be doing that for us in a rude and a matter of fact attitude. how does he think this is right? To fully charge his customers for 50 per container when that's not what you are receiving. do you put a quarter into a gumball machine for nothing? because that what he's asking of us. fraud. also gum isn't even a quarter anymore, try 50 cents lol read more

I would leave no stars but 1 star is the only option. I walked into there store last week, seen this sick snake. Skin was coming off in all places. Not properly coming off. Had bugs in the tank. The guy working drop the mice bin as he was walking into the back room and you see mice scrambling everywhere. UPDATE: Oh my God, I'm screaming over here ... Spoke with the owner. He said we should have, instead of bringing the mostly-starved, sick bunny we'd bought from him to the vet, we should have brought the little guy (with whom our kids had already fallen in love) back to his shop for a refund, and he would have fed it to one of their snakes. AAAAAAAGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *** So, counter intuitively perhaps, Hoffmans Reptile store sells bunnies! My honey and our kids visited, bought the cutest bunnies ever. Meet Jamie and Cersei, the cutest, softest littlr incestuous couple ever. (There's a phrase you don't see too often, right? Thanks George R.R. Martin for that.) We took J&C to our friendly neighborhood vet for a checkup just as soon as we could get in. There, we were surprised to learn that the bunnies had been poorly cared for, and that Jamie wasn't slim, but instead was starving to death since he can't eat, as they weren't given a basic staple of their diet, Timothy hay, that keeps their back teeth from painfully overgrowing. (Note, this is not the same as the front teeth which can be trimmed by owners as a normal part of bunny ownership.) I'm writing this review from the waiting room at the vet's office, where they're xraying poor Jamie's mouth after a weekend of a liquid diet and pain meds just to keep him alive long enough to further diagnose. So sad for our bunny. Also, we're at about $1,000 in bunny vet bills so far (I'm attaching a copy of todays bill; Friday's is separate) for our little guy. Shame on you, Hoffmans. You should know better, and caused this animal unnecessary pain and suffering, along with costing our family $1000 ... and counting ... read more

I am mystified as to where the poor reviews came from. My family including two little kids went to this shop looking for a starter pet. The owner was knowledgeable and patiently and expertly helped us decide on some bearded dragons and picked out two for us with wonderful temperaments. He sold us a fully set up habitat and feed and gave us lots of tips. They also offer boarding, health check and cleaning services for great prices. I got my sweet leopard gecko from them. But they seem very uneducated in reptile husbandry. When I first got her I asked if they had a good substrate to recommend they instantly pressured me into getting there "sandy grit" or whatever it was called. This "sandy grit" was straight up sand with Little Rock's in it. Even eleven year old me knew this was horrible substrate and knew it would cause impaction. I quickly through it away wasting 15 dollars of my own money. Came back a month late for meal worms, which they wouldn't sell to me because it "caused impaction" real funny coming from them. Visited just a couple months ago and all there geckos look malnourished and are under a harsh red if light scientifically proven to be bad for there eyes. Do better Hoffmann's. read more

RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS. If you want to buy an overpriced reptile with a respiratory infection & pay vet bills...buy it here. Also, if the owner offers to take the reptile back in order to nurse it back to health & pay for medication, don't do it. He'll only neglect it further and it will die. Also, all their feeders have respiratory infections & mites. If your snake isn't hungry the day you buy the feeder, expect the poor thing to die within a couple of days even if you have a proper enclosure/food for it. It's a shame to be forced to give them 1 star. Animal Control should be called & have all their animals taken away. Actually...my daughter's calling them now & I would suggest if you've had a similar experience, please report it. read more
