I have mixed feelings about this place. First, they have a. private parking lot, but it is very tight and awkward. This is a carryout only joint, so there is no dining area. there is not even patio seating. They serve all your basic barbecue here including chicken, ribs, wings and pulled beef. The staff was ok. They did their job, no more, no less. I got the large rib platter, which came with two sides. I got collard greens and mac & cheese as my sides. It took them about 8 to 10 minutes to make my food. And since there is no dining area, I took it back to my place. There was a lot of food. I could not finish it all in one sitting. The food was good enough. I was call it "OK" or average. I have had better and I have had worse. The ribs were decent, I liked the corn bread, I was not a fan of the mac & cheese at all and the greens could have used a bit more flavor. Don't get me wrong, I ate all my food, but it was not a meal that I would actively seek out again. 3.5 stars would be an more accurate rating but since that is not an option, I rounded it up to 4. I visited hogs on the hill today and it was a terrible experience. I ordered 4 wings with were burned up. I ordered a slab of ribs which were burned up also. The meat was non chewable. Probably both were cooked yesterday. Dont waste your money. You will be highly disappointed.Tried to get my order replaced or a refund. That wouldn't do anything for. I explained that I didn't call yesterday because where I work we are not to have phones. They ask why I didn't bring back food yesterday. I explained that I live in Baltimore and didn't know when I would get back to DC. Told them I threw the Burn up food in the trash. They said if I don't bring no food back I get nothing. This place is just meh. I've been to this location now twice and I've ordered several items on there menu. On my first visit, I ordered the ribs, collard greens, potato salad and cornbread. The ribs wasn't bad however they weren't as tender as I would have like for them to be. The greens taste like they came from the can. The potato salad was ok and the cornbread was really good. My next visit, which was 9/26/19 I ordered the wings with spicy sauce (not very spicy), collard greens, potato salad, mac-n-cheese and sweet potato that's new on there menu. Again the greens taste like they come from a can, the mac-n-cheese had no flavor (remind me of those frozen dinner mac n cheese), potato salad was decent, and the sweet potato was absolutely disgusting. The sweet potato tasted like oranges which was weird. We threw it out after the first bite. Parking is limited on the premise and the place wasn't dirty or had an odd smell. The meat was tender, delectable, and seasoned to perfection. I ordered the ultimate combo (or something of a similar name). It included pulled pork, beef brisket, chicken, and pork ribs. OMG. After I added the spicy bbq and hot sauce, I bulldozed into a food coma. Impressed and satisfied with the meat, for sure Now, let's discuss the sides. I sampled the mac and cheese and collard greens. This is where the restaurant decided to cut corners. The collard greens tasted like they were dumped out of a can and microwaved. Really? And the mac and cheese reminded me of a tv dinner food item that was recently thawed and heated. I threw both of the unappetizing sides in the trash. This restaurant could've easily gotten a 5 star review from me. I recommend the meat only. Order your sides from somewhere else or make your own. I got the large pork ribs with greens and potato salad and 4 piece wings. Get the spicy bbq sauce, it's not spicy but more flavorful and very good! The wings were good, I'd order them again. The ribs were tender but either a bit over cooked or old. The greens and potato salad, add some salt and pepper and they're edible. Lol Overall, this wasn't my first visit but my first review. I've lived in the area for two years, but I shyed away from visiting here due to the reviews from a couple years ago. I finally visited and I was so mad at myself for not visiting sooner. I had the ribs, mac & cheese, greens and cornbread. Those ribs were clutch!!! Amazing smoked flavor. The sides were good as well. My only compliant was the cornbread. It lack moistness and flavor. It tasted like baked cornmeal. Other than that, Hogs On the Hill is the place to go for authentic, smoked BBQ. Wayyy better than the BBQ places in NW that lacked flavor and seasoning - and I don't have to hint at why others are bland. To me, the best BBQ in the area (DC, Maryland, VA) is Mission BBQ, maybe Dixie Bones if you're starting to go south into Virginia. But, I'm always on the prowl for a good smoky pit joint. Hogs on the Hill is pretty rare to find in the city, but it has its pros and cons. PROS: * The wings are exceptionally flavored. Very smokey, well cooked, very well flavored. * The mild sauce is very sweet, but delightfully sticky and lightly spicy. It is a great complement to the pork. * The ribs are very meaty, and very big, and well smoked. * They give you a huge portion of chopped pork on the sandwich! And coleslaw on the side so you can add it yourself! * Mac n' Cheese is spot on stove-top style. Don't buy the claims that it's Kraft; far from it, but it is the same style, which might be off-putting to some. I liked it. I prefer baked style myself, but this is very acceptable. * Potato salad... wow. Lady wasn't kidding, it was spot on. CONS: * Ribs, despite being big and meaty and smoky, were also very fatty. They couldn't have been smoked for that long. This is why I typically don't order ribs, but I was able to find plenty of solid meat on them bones. * The pulled (chopped) pork was good, but kind of bland. Very dry, as well. I hate to draw the comparison, but... sawdust. Coleslaw and sauce saved it, at least. * Food came out fast, but wasn't exactly hot-hot. Some was, some wasn't. And the cold side was in with the warm stuff, so it got kind of weird together. * Flavors were good, but not really wow-ing. Like, the ribs were fine, but could have used more boost. Definitely needed something extra in that pork. So, it is what it is. Very decent BBQ. Just not the best in the area. Worth stopping for, though. read more

We have been going here off and on since this restaurant has opened. We returned recently and found some major improvements. First and most importantly, the ribs are far more tender and tastier than before. The fat does not bother me and I like it. The sauce is good but sweet. We like Kraft and other brands. The red beans and rice are pretty good but sometimes short on the beans. The potato salad and collard greens you will have to season yourself (easy for me). Mac and cheese you should not order anywhere in the DC metro area from any restaurant unless you just like disappointment. I like the cornbread. Good luck to Y'all! read more

I hate to say that my ribs were horrible! They were so dry I almost chocked. Sadly this was the 2nd meal purchased that was not eatable. In HOTH's defense I've been pleased with their meals for years lately not so much. This place issued its siren call to every time I passed it on New York Ave. It has all the hallmarks of truly great BBQ. It's a shack, it smells like smoke, and it's not in a terribly good neighborhood. I sometimes demur from using the the term "hole in the wall" to describe a place, it seems a little too pejorative for what I see as a positive trait, lack of pretense. But, to be honest, this place is a hole in the wall (in a good way of course). There is a 10' by 5' waiting area, an order window complete with bullet proof glass, and a shabby wall menu and drink cooler. There is a tiny lot, which is sometimes also occupied by patrons of the checkers right in front of this place. The place is purely takeout, and when I was there on a week day lunch hour, it had a line nearly out the door. Every indication thus far is that this place was going to be a winner. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich with slaw, and some greens. Despite the line I had my meal within ten minutes of arrival. The sandwich had copious amounts of pork and sauce served on a typical hamburger bun. Here is my single complaint on the place. The single most important part of a BBQ place is their sauce, and I just wasn't impressed. It looked like a ketchup and vinegar based sauce and was a little spicy and sweet, but not terribly impressive. It had a really bright color, like the color of Chinese takeout sweet and sour sauce. I'm pretty sure it was homemade, which is a major plus, but man, this stuff is not winning any prizes. I certainly see myself returning, especially for provisions for picnics across the street at the Arboretum. But if your a BBQ lover, you won't be coming here for a bbq high, this is more of a bbq methadone. Enough to dull the pain of your urges, but not quite enough to satisfy. read more

Hummm. So what the heck is this mumbo sauce that Washingtonians try to pass off as BBQ sauce? Or at least that's what the sauce tasted like. Thank goodness I had them put it on the side, instead of on my chicken! I ordered half a chicken (forgettable) and sides: collards, mac and cornbread (that they should reconsider putting a price on). The collards were good, the mac was some nonsense that should never be replicated again. Over cooked and saucy (people don't make real mac and cheese anymore? Is it too expensive? Take it off the menu then). I also had the Sweet Potato pie, which was quite possibly the best thing I ate from this carry out, although it was overly sweetened and had some strings in it (I don't do strings, and again, if you don't know how to make sweet potato pies without strings, you need to leave it to the professionals). .75 stars for their attempt at southern BBQ. -4.25 stars for failing at most attempts. read more

I've seen this place dozens of times while traveling down Bladensburg Road, and finally stopped by last week. It's your typical DC restaurant; bullet-proof glass, no sitting area, grimy floor, the works. The only thing I cared about, though, was the BBQ. Which was awful. The sauce is a dark-salmon color; a goopy, gummy mess. Like corn syrup or ketchup in texture, I'm pretty sure it contains both. However, the CHIEF crime here, and the cardinal sin among BBQ purists, is the marinade process. There simply was none, and while the respective chicken or ribs may be adequately cooked, the sauce is simply slopped on top without any time to penetrate. Halfway through my meal, I began wiping off the sauce to get at the better-tasting, untainted meat beneath. Likewise, their collard greens are overly stewed, the cornbread is oddly smooth, and their potato salad is mashed, whipped, and BLENDED... something I've only experienced at this particular restaurant. Uh.....so it's a BBQ shack...not what I'm used to in the south....Now...there is something that appears to be a wood burning grill inside. I actually did see the wood burning while the chicken was cooking, it appears that the ribs had already been smoked and they were heating them back up. Not sure if they were today's or yesterday's ribs. As far as the sides go...they ABSOLUTELY suck. The mac n cheese is out a box and the greens were undercooked and lacked seasoning. Won't ever order a side from here again. The ribs were decent, nice smoked taste. They weren't fall off the bone, but they weren't tough either. The sauce was delicious. My first impression of this place is that it was pretty good. I got the pulled pork sandwich with what I believe was their spicier sauce, and some cole slaw. I asked for the slaw in the sandwich but they put it on the side... meh. The pork was good quality and the sauce was pretty tasty. The bun also held up well to the sauce. This place is in a run-down part of town, but unless you come here at night you'll be fine. Stop over at the Arboretum to eat.
