Cinder is the neighborhood hipster barbecue spot that you didn't know you needed. We were killin' some time before a comedy show, only had like 30 minutes, and wandered in. Great vibe, cool people, daily specials, and (you guessed it) tender, tasty barbecue. We ordered both the brisket and pulled pork and loved them both. Onion rings and *mild pickles (YES) are a great barbecue compliment and we're SO glad we saw another table eating/enjoying them. Next to us, the gents were enjoying their wings and other (unidentified) barbecue selections. Servers were busy, but made the rounds and caught up quickly. Compliments to Cinder for getting us in/out in 30 minutes, tender barbecue, and holding down a reasonable price point for "what you get." We'll be back, Cinder.

When walking into Cinder, I feel at home. The staff is super friendly and it brings me joy. My friend and I came in for the mexican breakfast (desayuno) and it was amazing. We ordered the chorizo sopes, chilaquiles rojos, and the mushroom quesadilla. I think this may be my new favorite breakfast/brunch place and it was AMAZING! Every bite was a flavor bomb and each dish was neck and neck for my favorite. We wrapped everything up with churros which came with a chocolate and strawberry puree sauce which made the churros not too heavy. I think I am in love and I'll definitely be back. I want to try the BBQ too

The Bottom Line: Cinder BBQ is probably the most local, neighborhood-oriented experience I ever had in DC. The combination of good food, great drinks, and great people already has me planning for the next time I can spend an entire night there. A friend and I had plans to start our night out there. I heard that they had good BBQ and a great whiskey selection. It's great to see they were open during these pandemic times, right now they only served people outside within their table-lined sidewalks. We had to wait for a table to open up but honestly, we were glad we did. We didn't end up really leaving the place and literally closed it down on a Saturday night. The whiskey selection is out of this world. The server was so accommodating and guided us through tasting various selections and even was kind enough to bring out the bottle with each pour for us to look at. Around 8:30 they technically closed but we were allowed to stick around and the staff joined us for drinks and chatter. Some regulars stopped by and it just became a really great hang. Neighbors out walking their pets stopped by to say hi to everyone- it felt like a really local experience. The staff there really knows their brown water, and with a really extensive selection, I know I'll be back to try more whiskey and enjoy another chill night in Petworth.

Blessed with a warm winter evening and picked up an order from Cinder. Beautiful looking neighborhood place and I hope patrons can enjoy the inside sometime soon. Food served quick. Most importantly, the BBQ was really good. Brisket sandwich with ample meat. Most excited to try the collard greens and sprouts, something not often found on a bbq menu, cause they ain't easy to do well. Collard greens were excellent. Little spicy kick to them to dance with the brisket. Sprouts were very impressive. Crispy, firm, plenty, and flavorful. Only issue is waaaaaay too sweet. Pull back the honey and we got a big winner. Back to the bbq. Very good. However, it was chopped into large, irregular chunks which just fell out of the sandwich and made it difficult to eat. Longer, thinner slices would have been more appropriate for sandwich service. Finally, the bark was so thick, it really wasn't edible. Should have been trimmed for a sandwich. Only real concern was the bbq sauce. I don't know which one I ordered, I asked the server to pick one for me. I understand sauce is regional, and I think this was a Carolina-style. It looked and tasted like thousand island dressing. Not what I would really prefer in a bbq sauce. Runny, watery, with a vinegar twang to it. I should have been more specific about a bbq sauce. Well, I make it sound like I had a lousy meal, but nothing could be further from the truth. The important stuff, the HARD stuff, Cinder got right and did really well. A few tweaks and I think Cinder will be tops.

We came on a busy day where pretty much everything was sold out. I ordered the Cajun shrimp which I was surprised how flavorful and fresh it was it had a tangy bbq flavored sauce. It came with bread, fresh pickles cole slaw and a side of your choice I picked the onion rings. Will definitely come again when visiting DC.

What an unexpected pleasure it was to stop in and have a bite! We originally ordered our food for takeout but when we arrived we walked into a welcoming comfortable restaurant with an excellent bar and inside seating! They also have outdoor seating! We stayed and enjoyed the relaxed vibe! My tender pork platter with homemade everything was plentiful and delicious! The wonderful pickles and slaw were made with care & nice flavors! The spicy bbq sauce was my favorite! The bbq beans were packed with peach and bourbon flavor! The brisket sandwich had deep tender smoky flavor. Cinder bbq knows how to prepare excellent onion rings!!! I could eat a plateful. They were made with a crunchy batter and seasoned well! They have an outstanding selection of beer and liquor!!! Off season the Kitchen closes around 8pm and W,Th, Fri around 8:30 pm. But you can still drop by and have a drink or nightcap after the kitchen is done! Don't leave without trying the Apple pie with salted caramel sauce! It's just as amazing as everything else and it's also prepared in house!!! I'm not sharing my leftovers and I can't wait to dig in. Soooo goood!!!

Pretty decent BBQ for DC. In an eclectic part of DC, a real attempt to BBQ. A lot better than some of the other BBQ joints in the district. Cool bar type vibe inside with a wicked awesome stocked high end bourbon and whiskey selection. Waitress was just as eclectic as the neighborhood was excellent. First time drinking Weller barrel proof. NICE!

While in DC , I was in the mood for a Lil Texas Style Brisket. The smoke on the brisket did not disappoint. The food was delicious but the Bourbon menu took it to the next level.

Absolutely delicious BBQ and excellent service. We shared the hot wings and smoked wings as an app (you can do half and half). Both types of wings were incredible and came with blue cheese and also a different, uniquely tasty white sauce. We shared the brisket platter, which came with Texas toast, slaw, pickles, and a choice of bbq sauce, and one side (we got mac n cheese). The brisket was savory and tender, really good. I also loved the mac n cheese. Very friendly and attentive staff, I just didn't love that they weren't wearing masks.

It looked dry, but on that day I wanted BBQ, so dry or not I'm Fat Guy from the Spy Who Shagged Me. It was like yesterday when i went in for that bite but OH! Meat falling, tongue rejoicing. Teeth! Be gentle. This bone may look like bark (I'm exaggerating the appearance) but there was no bite. A picture of Smoke Datt may show up in your App Store while looking for something else because it's Tender. It was good, somebody SMOKED DATT with prejudice towards swine. What that pig do to you?!? Fast forward, I don't want bbq because I'm already tired. Ok I give in. 3 bones, My Momma's baked Mac & Cheese (yeah, I know where that recipe came from j/k), Cole Slaw, (I usually get the baked beans) and a Diet Coke. Why diet? I like Diet. Was I tired afterwards? YES! Any regrets? Nope! Would I do it again? See you all next week because Smoke Datt was BANGIN on my taste buds singing baby come back and the meal wasn't even over. I am critic. Oh, 1 more thing. Eat a bone without sauce. True BBQ. Sorry No pictures, next time I'll take pictures before devouring, and update this post with the pics. ------ I went back. My grilled chicken was moist, flavorful, and cooked very well. The fried catfish was not too salty and had great balance where you can taste the fish. The mac and cheese, cabbage, and green beans were all of nice quality, the weakest link is the potato salad, however that is a dish that can be complicated for different restaurants to get the hang of, fortunately I can prepare some awesome potato salad myself. The peach half and half drinks were balanced perfectly well not too sugary and sweet. I swear some of these places make drinks way too sweet and you want to check your insulin levels. The server was highly attentive and a great conversationalist and paid attention to our wants and needs and had superb professionalism and a strong work ethic. He was hospitable and accommodating. The staff was friendly and approachable. We had fun and enjoyed this more than Milk and Honey and even Carolina Kitchen. DC keeps gentrifying and losing its soul, but there are still some hidden gems around. This spot blends in with the Walmart, and funnily enough I have driven past here a gazillion of times and assumed it was some bakery or another spot and did not know it was a soul food joint, something DC has been minimizing and pushing out to Maryland like the city always does. I think it is masterful that they use clear plastic containers for their food making it easier for the staff as that can be expensive and time consuming with the dish washing/prep, sound economical move. It is nice that the business (U Street etc. location) has been in the DMV for over 20 years and expanded to Baltimore in Fells Point. I think Baltimore will like this spot! This felt authentic and soulful in a way that I had not experienced in the city in quite some time, as the city has had a lot of restaurants be sterile, bland, flavorless, and catered to certain demographics while completely ignoring others. I liked the soundtrack with R&B and was able to hear some TLC on the soundtrack which was very nostalgic and a throwback to DC before the gentrification when it was truly Chocolate City! Overall, it is a spot that you can visit more than once certainly not a one and done like a lot of restaurants that lack service, food, and ambiance/vibe.

At that time, I was upset about what happened with George Floyd a week earlier; still in 2026, it was wrong what happened to Floyd (not to mention more recent news that happened in that city was horrible too). I hung out with a friend on that warm day having a beer outside his apartment in Takoma Park. He is a mega-leftist politically (I'm more independent), but said he wanted to support a black-owned business; I said that's a good idea; I might do that for dinner. He was doing his own thing for dinner, so I was on my own. So, I looked up on Yelp what was in the area, and I saw just across the border in DC, Oohh's & Aahh's. Staff was nice, and I got a fried chicken platter. As this was Covid times, there was no dine-in. So, I schlepped all the way straight up Georgia Ave 6 miles back to my home in Wheaton fairly quickly on that Sunday as I don't like my food getting cold. I think my food stayed pretty hot as it was well-wrapped, and if it had cooled off, I could always microwave at home. The fried chicken, mac n' cheese (my favorite vegetable...I know not really a veggie but a joke), etc. were all solid. If I was ever over here, I'd consider coming back; just so rare I go to DC these days.

The cuisine is distinguished by its excellence; notably, the catfish is expertly prepared, flavorful & well-seasoned, obviating the need for additional condiments such as hot sauce or tartar sauce. Side dishes are thoughtfully paired with the main course: the collard greens with turkey are fresh & complement the catfish, while the macaroni & cheese presents a rich, satisfying flavor akin to a dessert. The cornbread is reminiscent of cake. Collectively, the superior culinary offerings & attentive service result in a memorable dining experience. Johnny Ray's stands out for its consistent standards & convenient downtown Silver Spring location. A visit to this establishment is highly recommended.

I ordered 2 whiting plates. One with collard greens with smoked turkey and fries and the other with Mac n cheese and rice and gravy. The fries were good. The whiting was fried to perfection. I also like the greens (I'm a southerner so I'm a bit hard to please). Everything was reasonably priced. The restaurant had nice music playing and has a bit of a lounge feel with the dark walls. It wasn't crowded on a Friday during lunch time. I'd go back for sure.

I decided to walk over from campus and order two different bowls to try one with beef bulgolgi another with spicy pork. I enjoyed both and felt like they were a hearty serving, definitely more than I expected for the lunch special. Service was great, friendly and pretty fast. The ambiance reminded me of a typical Honey Pig KBBQ feel just with a comfier waiting area with some reclining chairs, rocking chairs and couches. If you enjoy Honey pig flavors you'll definitely enjoy the bowl lunch options for a quick take away option!

I think $38.99 is a fair price for all you can eat. I like that the portions are small so too much is not wasted. This was also my first encounter with the delivery robot. That was cool. I don't like that it has other people's food on it though. I was sitting close to the kitchen so my food didn't have to travel too far but, I wouldn't want my food traveling across the room and making stops at multiple tables before getting to me. I'm from the South and I need a bit of flavor so I did add Salt and Pepper to the items while cooking. The salad dressing had no flavor. I ended up using the yum yum sauce as a dressing. The dumplings were good. The cucumber salad was also good. My favorite hot item was the steak and shrimp. The brisket was mostly fat and the thin pork belly was like Prosciutto. My only suggesting is serving the noodles closer to when the hot items are ready. They get stiff if they just sit. Oh, and I think you need separate tongs for seafood, pork, chicken, and beef. I was worried about cross contaminating. I'd try this again.
