    Beef kabob sandwich
    Kendra M.

This was my first time trying Spicy Water and they did not disappoint! I love places with great customer service and this place is one of them. I had the beef kabob sandwich with a side of plantain and it was the perfect lunch. I can see Spicy Water becoming a DC staple.

My experience with Spicy Water was phenomenal. I got the grilled Red Snapper plate, with fried plantains, french fries, and yucca. The Snapper marinade was mild, but very flavorful, and they provide a sauce on the side for extra spice. I recommend pre-ordering to avoid the lines and also secure a plate before they run out (Instagram: @spicywaterafricangrill). Also, the grilled Red Snapper plate is $40, but it can easily feed two people.

I came across Spicy Water African Grill at Eastern Market one Saturday and knew I had to try it. You can smell the stand around the market and the chicken just looked so good. They were cooking fish as well, but I went for the chicken and fries. It was delicious. Very well seasoned and I enjoyed the thicker, steak-cut fries. I'm obsessed with the sauce though. It's spicy and flavorful and when I return, I'll likely buy extra sauce. I'm hoping they add more sides to the menu. The chicken and fries travel well and are excellent reheated. Definitely a new favorite spot.

This place is phenomenal!…read more We visited on a Thursday, just after they opened at 11. We were able to find street parking right out front, and order pretty quickly. We got a Dino Rib, Wagyu Brisket, cornbread, banana pudding, key lime pie, blackberry cider, and water, which totaled just under $100. And I will say it was well worth it!! The only thing we probably could have done without was the key lime pie. The employees were friendly and service was quick. The whole place gave instant Texas vibes, even the bathroom matched the bbq style, super cute. We will definitely return again.

We aren't big meat eaters so perhaps might've ordered the wrong things. On the day we came, we ordered the brisket tamale (2 come in an order), an order of the Texas chili (this was the special), an order of the herby potato salad, sweet potato fries, 4 pieces of cornbread and a banana pudding. Ordering these items came to $47. My mom had a Boylan's sweet lemonade and I had a pilsner draft. We sat outside on one of the many picnic benches under a tree and sampled all the goods. Texas chili - this was pretty so-so for me and tasted like spaghetti sauce to me vs chili. It had a bit of a kick to it. I didn't really care for this dish and won't order again. Brisket tamale - this by far was the favorite item for me, however, pretty skimpy on the brisket. Some sour cream and pico de gallo would have been nice to accompany the tamale. Sweet potato fries - solid and tasty but hard to screw up fries really. Herby potato salad - way too watery for me, seemed the potatoes soaked up a lot of fluid and this style of potato salad didn't work for me. Cornbread - solid, no issues there. Banana pudding - pretty tasty, with real bananas and Nilla wafers mixed in and on top. I would come back for this. I deducted one star for some things we sampled that really didn't work. Another star deducted as the prices were higher than what I am willing to pay for given the quality and taste. Overall, a bit underwhelming but also we didn't order items that they are known for. I would come back to give more popular items a try another time.

There's one permanent BBQ place and 2 pop-up caterers on rotation/schedule. I'm feeling sluggish, BBQ is the last thing I want. But then the memories of my first Smoke Datt rib returns. It looked dry, but on that day I wanted BBQ, so dry or not I'm Fat Guy from the Spy Who Shagged Me. It was like yesterday when i went in for that bite but OH! Meat falling, tongue rejoicing. Teeth! Be gentle. This bone may look like bark (I'm exaggerating the appearance) but there was no bite. A picture of Smoke Datt may show up in your App Store while looking for something else because it's Tender. It was good, somebody SMOKED DATT with prejudice towards swine. What that pig do to you?!? Fast forward, I don't want bbq because I'm already tired. Ok I give in. 3 bones, My Momma's baked Mac & Cheese (yeah, I know where that recipe came from j/k), Cole Slaw, (I usually get the baked beans) and a Diet Coke. Why diet? I like Diet. Was I tired afterwards? YES! Any regrets? Nope! Would I do it again? See you all next week because Smoke Datt was BANGIN on my taste buds singing baby come back and the meal wasn't even over. I am critic. Oh, 1 more thing. Eat a bone without sauce. True BBQ. Sorry No pictures, next time I'll take pictures before devouring, and update this post with the pics. ------ I went back. And today, It was hot outside and tropical smoothie was in my mind. What?!? Smoke Datt is back. Ok, let me just get the ribs a la cart to post the pics I promised. I just want the ribs. She smiles and goes in her tiny voice "you don't want any macaroni and cheese?" I go "Nawww," she ask "you sure?".... Give it to me! . You KNOW I want some of THAT........BAKED MAC & CHEESE. "You can get another side".....well it is just $1 more. Ok ok, I haven't tried the green beans. Corn bread please. Paid in disgrace . Ok, I was super busy so I didn't get to my food for 3 hours. Warmed it up and was going to go down stairs to a table. Food smells great. Let me just....before I get to the stairs.....taste this. Oh.....OH. This window seal is just fine . Who needs a chair? Ribs- I don't know what I was on when last time I said that the ribs looked dry. Look at the PICS......Juicy! Why is it so Smokey good. Like seriously, this is what Dave, Mission, Myron Mixon's Pitmaster, and yo Daddy call The End of their manhood. Just close your stores. The second someone backs DATT with some funds. It's OVER. Let the right person get a hold of one of these ribs and watch the meat fall off before he raises it to his mouth. The Mac - Music was playin "Retuuurn of, the Mac!" My life of Mac and Cheese flashed before my eyes. Big bad Wolf BBQ, Rocklands, Famous Dave's, Mission, Chuck Fil A, Myron Mixon's Pitmaster, Sweet fire Donna's (with her burnt ends) my mom's, and my grandma's (I swear my thumbs tripped and this is a typo if someone tells her) for the record, if I ever gave any of those places a 5, I'm sorry, I take it back. There Good - 4 stars at best. The Green Beens - I only got the green bean's because I had a taste for corn bread. I have nothing to say. Just one question. Why are these green beans so GOOD!?! What did you what did you what did you PUT in here? Nooo, green beans don't taste like this. Seasoned perfectly. Not salty, SEASONED. Corn Bread - Mannn, the consistency wasn't like cornbread: it was like corn cake lol. But taste like cornbread, but better. It's like the change in texture just did something for my life. I may have just been extra.....but YOU weren't on that window ledge in the hallway, happy as can be while Colonels, Generals and Secretary's of Defense are walking by, and I'm just nam nam nam trying to hide my face. I don't typically eat beef, but every now and then I see a good-looking burger and all bets are off. Ivy City Smokehouse had a double-patty cheeseburger topped with cabbage salad and Russian dressing, served with fries. I'm not usually a Russian dressing girl, so I skipped it and went with good old ketchup instead. Y'all... this burger was SO GOOD. And HUGE! The fries were hot, crispy, and really good too, but I only ate a few because I was absolutely determined to finish that entire burger. Mission accomplished. The restaurant itself is pretty large with both indoor and outdoor seating. Since there was a party happening, there weren't many tables set up for dining, but we managed to snag one. The lines were long and food took a little while since everyone had to order both drinks and food through the bar, but the staff handled the crowd really well. This experience has been physically exhausting and has completely changed my confidence in eating here.
