My first time here at a Hip Hop Fish & Chicken and at first I questioned my decision. The location and building aren't the best, but the service was quick and we were in and out since we called in our order. Here's what I ordered: Fried gizzard and liver Chicken and cat fish box Mac and cheese Greens Okra Fries The food was hot and every flavorful. The only thing that didn't taste all that good was the greens and the company I was with said it was the first time the greens tasted bland so I am willing to try again. I first tried this place randomly after really craving fried fish. I heard so much about the "crack" seasoning on IG reviews of it and gave it a try. I ordered the fried trout mean that comes with fries and coleslaw and hushpuppies via doordash. Even being transport via Doorsdash the fish was fried to perfection. It has a good flavor and the crack takes it the next level. The fries although kinda soggy are were really good. And it all tasted like it just got out the grease if you put it in the air fryer. I am going to preface this review with the fact that I am not the biggest fan of fried chicken. So take this review like a grain of salt. I do, however, like side dishes, and they have plenty of them to choose from here. I have had the pleasure of not only eating the food, but visiting the location at least twice. After my visits to the location I can say without a doubt that it is best to get your food to go here. I'm still trying to figure out what this was prior to it being Hip Hop. The building has a distinct look, but for the life of me, I do not know what it was. Was it a Burger King, Arby's, McDonalds? I have no idea, but you can tell this was not the original use for this building. The red used is reminiscent of the red used in bricks for schools of the 70s and 80s. Inside, is a little off putting. There is a seating area, but no one seems to use it for seating. It is so underutilized that it looks perfect to be used for a set of a movie/show in need of a place to show abandonment. Honestly they could do without that area and possibly get rid of it altogether. Place a walk up window here, it would get so much more use, in my opinion. The employees here can be a little harsh. They would rather do anything else than acknowledge that you are there to ask a question or pick up your food. They weren't the best to deal with on each of my visits here. As for the food, I'm obviously not going to make comments on the fried chicken, or any fried foods at all, for this place. I did partake in the mac n cheese, sweet potatoes, and greens. I know I am probably going to get some flack for this, but to me, overall, it was bland. The only thing that had a hint of seasoning were the sweet potatoes. The mac n cheese didn't have a cheese taste. The greens, tasted like leafy water. There was just no taste to the food to me. I really wanted to enjoy it as I had heard rave reviews from people in the area, but I have had better food at fast food or fast casual places that are national chains. Idk I've never thought to write a review before today... but tonight I ordered the trout and I immediately thought I needed to stop eating, take a picture and write a review lol. I'll start by saying that I've placed large orders of chicken/ fish for events and it's always ready at the requested pick up time. Anytime I've gone to this location, it's clean and they are pretty fast. That saying, I've moved a bit away and now use uber eats. Anywho, this trout was surprisingly delish! Crispy and seasoned just right! I also ordered one piece of Catfish & whiting. The Catfish batter didn't seem to stick as well as the other two (trout & whiting) but they all were delish. I love that the meals come with fries & coleslaw. I'm sure the coleslaw is probably a pre-made mix but it's still delish! I don't know what kind of name Hip Hop is for a fast food restaurant, and this location is pretty shady. But I never saw anything unsafe happen during any of my visits, so it didn't bother me. Especially because the catfish is WOW amazing!!! I have tried the catfish, hush puppies, and fried okra, and while they are all good, I might just stick to the catfish from now on because it's THAT good. Mmmm who doesn't love some fried chicken wings! The 10 pc meal was a get deal and the seasoning was done pretty well. Salty with just a hint of sweetness, though you've definitely have to eat it with the hot sauce. The chicken wing dinner plate was well worth it. It comes with 10 wings that came with Hip Hops special seasoning, fries, a piece of white bread and cole slaw. The seasoning definitely adds a new taste to it, almost cheesy but also sweet. Kind of like white cheddar that you put on popcorn with sugar. The bread as the side is pretty much just any white wonderbread but their cole slaw was nice sweet and crunchy. Complete waste of money! Hazardous to your health and they don't change their grease! We stopped in to grab some fried shrimp. We ordered fried shrimp, fries, fried okra and yams. When we got home we opened the boxes to dark brown greasy shrimp and soggy fries. The okra was greasy as well, seeping out as soon as you bite into it. To top it off the yams tasted burnt. The customer service was excellent and friendly. The menu is clear and much variety too including healthy dishes. I especially love the fresh fried fish selections. The restaurant is clean and all the staff were observed following protocols, gloves, masks, and social distancing regulations. The Dinning inside is closed due to Covid-19 regulations. The fish was realllly good! Fish dinners come with fries, cole slaw and bread. I also ordered a side of greens. The collard greens? Not so great. For one thing, they need to be cut up more. The onion rings also were very good - nice and crisp, and more than enough for both of us. The cole slaw tasted good, and and was a good counterpoint to all the fried items. The corn nuggets were ok, but not really interesting enough to order again. Sadly, the chicken wings were so salty, we couldn't eat it them at all. My husband and I came to Hip Hop Fish & Chicken for dinner. They have multiple locations, primarily in the Baltimore area, but have a few other locations (DC, Temple Hills, and Glen Burnie). They offer a variety of items on their menu such as: Fish Dinner (ocean perch, whiting, trout, catfish fillets, tilapia, catfish nuggets, shrimp); Fish by the Piece (perch, whiting, or trout); Fish & Chicken Combos (your choice of fish with either chicken tenders/breast/legs/wings/gizzards/livers/nuggets); chicken entrees/combos; sides (fries, onion rings, mushrooms, hush puppies, eggplant, okra, coleslaw, potato salad, cheese sticks, jalapenos, poppers, corn nuggets); desserts (peach cobbler, various cakes, bean pie, sweet potato pie, banana pudding); and, even catering services. You can call in orders so your food can be ready for a pick-up when you swing by. This location is run by a Moroccan and a Palestinian, both extremely sweet and with a great sense of humor! There are technically two lines; one where you order, and the other line where you pay. We shared a Fish & Chicken Combo (catfish fillet with chicken wings) - the catfish was extremely generous in size, but it was okay; the fried chicken wings were good, as they were not monstrously big, but had good breading and good with the hot sauce; this combo also came with a huge mountainous side of fries, a cup of coleslaw, and two pieces of white bread. The fried clam strips were also okay; great with either the hot sauce or the cocktail sauce. We also had side orders of onion rings (nice and crispy), potato salad (not a fan as it was heavily egg-based), jalapeno poppers (I enjoyed these a lot as they were small and didn't have an overwhelming amount of filling within them; you can choose either cream cheese or cheddar cheese filling - I requested a combo of both), and mac and cheese triangles (filled with mac and cheese and battered; my husband liked these; I thought it was okay). Had the catfish - it was so delicious! Nice sized filets and fried up to a crisp but not greasy and the fish remained tender and moist. The tartar sauce and hot sauce were on point too. Too sweet, so sweet that all the sugar has not dissolved. The reason that I am a fan is because I went to the location in Baltimore originally with my brother - who raved about this place. It is a destination for fried fish and fried chicken. I wish I knew more about where they source their protein from and exactly who started the brand. Their website does not give too much away and leaves much to be desired in that area. I think that more people should be curious about this seeing as they have 19 locations in specific neighborhoods of Baltimore and Prince George's County and one in DC that are all predominately black.
