The service is impeccable. The ambience is chill. The barstools are circa The Good Hop. No food but I'm sure you can bring your own. Adult wine slushies. Dog friendly. Run, don't walk to this beer bar gem.

I have a personal goal to try all the beer places in the East Bay area. I've been to most of the…read morebreweries in Berkeley (Gilman, Great Notion, Fieldworks, Headlands), some in nearby cities (Match Point, East Brothers, Fraction), and I've been wanting to check out this taproom because of the good reviews online. I don't consider myself a beer connoisseur, but I like trying different beers and ciders so this place was right up my alley. I had a friend visiting Berkeley from out of town so we came here to hang out and catch up. One thing that stood out to me is this place, because it's a taproom and not a brewery, is open later than the other beer places in the East Bay. Many choices of beer and cider on tap. I tried the ginger peppercorn cider and it was very unique, I've never had a cider like this flavor, it's almost like a cross between ginger beer and cider. My friends enjoyed various beers on tap. The place is pretty small but very clean and cute. I like that you can choose from 10 oz or 16 oz pour, so people like me can try more varieties in smaller portion than just drinking one boring thing. I like variety. The all you can eat popcorn was a hit with our little group. The truffle flavor really elevates the popcorn and it goes well with beer! There's so much free parking in this area at night... super convenient... although it scared me for a minute when I couldn't find my car in the very empty street lot, before I realized I was another block farther down. This area of Berkeley feels pretty safe at night even at 11pm. Good place. I would definitely go again!

It was the perfect spot to sit and think a bit before planning my next move. The bartender was great and friendly! I ended up with a delicious sour beer and sat and chilled. Cute little 20 minutes spent at Hoi Polloi. I'm sure ill be back when needing a little break from life to sip on a yummy sour.

The burgers are smash burgers and tasted good, but I was honestly surprised by the price. Paying $15 for such a small burger felt way too expensive. My daughter even said, "Nine dollars for this little thing?" The flavor was decent with the sauce, but the portion just didn't justify the cost. We also ordered the tater tots, which were unfortunately pretty greasy. Overall, it was an okay experience, but I don't think we'll be back. I'd rather spend $15 on a bigger, more filling burger somewhere else.

The burger was extremely flavorless, oily, and just plainly not worth $9. It was so bad I almost felt scammed. The sauce is basically mayo, which is fine since I like burger king whoppers but there was no ketchup. Just literal mayo with a few strands of greasy red onions. Loaded fries were $10...completely not worth it. Just sad soggy fries and bland sauce with pickles thrown on top. Ordering via kiosk was easy, seating is adequate. Can't recommend the food, though. Maybe I should've tried the bulgogi burger...

A must-visit place for anyone living in the area (4/5 Green Stars)…read moreBring cash! That's the first rule of Schmidt's Pub. Maybe it's the only rule! I've been coming here a bit more regularly, lately - more visits in the last year compared to the previous decade, in fact. Now I wonder what I was waiting for. According to the East Bay Express, Schmidt's Pub is "basically your living room, but better" - that does sum it up, except that very few of us have living rooms anything like this, with a cozy fireplace surrounded by comfy armchairs and rustic tables beside sunny windows. Not many of us have living rooms with Old Speckled Hen on tap, or populated with an entertaining parade of quirky folk and friendly dogs. If the people and dogs are not entertaining enough then pick up a copy of Calvin and Hobbes or A History of Clay Pipes (okay, I made that one up) and have a little retreat with a pint. 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on these factors: * Beer on tap (transported in reusable kegs) has a much lower footprint compared to bottles or cans. * Allows you to bring your own food, which is good for folk like vegans who are often more comfortable with BYO. * The snacks available at the counter could be a bit more Berkeley (or Albany)! They were mostly from big corps - Lays chips (PepsiCo) and chocolate bars from Mars. Would be nice to see a more imaginative/ethical selection. * A great community space with an inclusive atmosphere. Schmidt's is home to many groups (e.g., knitting) and provides a second family for many, some who send postcards from their trips! * Finally, we shouldn't underestimate the importance of having a place to slow down, reflect and connect with each other a little. In that respect, Schmidt's Pub is worth its weight in gold.

Kicking myself for not coming here sooner! 5 hearts and stars!…read more Neighborhood favorite.

Dedicated man. Never mind that he doesn't even drink, but...food for him and more beer for me! Win-win, I'll say ;) SO DID IT LIVE UP TO THE HYPE??? Short answer: YES!!! the food and beer were both amazing - the beer was a foregone conclusion but to top it off, they had a smidge left of this experimental European-style beer that I thankfully was able to try and that was a special treat. The Italian beef was juicy and had just the right amount of sog without losing it's structural integrity. The taproom had a nice variety of Asian inspired beers on tap, including a masala chai amber lager and Vietmanese coffee lager. Compared to Dokkaebier, another brewery that specializes in Asian inspired beers, I find that the beers by Match Point are much bolder in their flavors. Simon -- the owner of the brewery, and the other staff member working that day were both very friendly and knowledgeable about all the beers. The space itself is perfect for large groups. It's a real shame the brewery will no longer be around. Albany is really losing out on an incredible business.
