A hip, trendy, supposed izakaya near Fenway from the Cushman's (of O Ya fame). While it's on Boston Magazine's "50 Best Restaurants in Boston" list, I can't say that I was particularly impressed, so 3.5 stars. More of a place to go with a bunch of friends to celebrate something and you end up enjoying yourselves more from yelling across the table at each other (it's loud) and getting tipsy, than from actually enjoying great food and drinks. The food and cocktails are not bad, but sound much better on paper than the flavors actually turn out to be on the table. Nothing was actually memorable, or a "I've gotta have that again" level. But at least they look pretty (Instagram) and the prices are not completely ridiculous, as is usually for the case for places like this. I can't really see myself going back, but I've checked it off my list. We ordered (see pics): BRAINS ON CRACK ($8): Crispy calves brains, Hojoko xo butter, lemon zest, bonito flakes...Amusing that they can get away with this name, but Devra Fist lambasted Milk Bar in Harvard Sq for "Crack Pie" and they had to change its name lol...yeah it's fun to eat brains, its pretty looking, but ultimately a boring dish CHICKEN WINGS FROM ROBATA GRILL ($7): Miso tare, lime...butterflied flats, competent but a bit on the boring side (but it looks pretty at least!) GLAZED JAPANESE EGGPLANT ($8): Red miso dengaku, lemon zest...this at least had a pronounced flavor (sesame), but the stalk end was undercooked SPICY MISO RAMEN ($17): 48 hour chicken broth, hatcho miso, spicy pork, corn tempura, menma, soy egg...by far the best thing we had, perfectly cooked ramen, and the broth is very rich and chickeny, but unfortunately too salty Cocktails: 5,6,7,8 ($12): Prairie organic vodka, Violette, lemon, mango foam...I like the musical allusion...looks pretty and tastes pleasant, but that's about it GOMOKU ($12): Arette blanco tequila, Rumbar silver, coconut, passionfruit, honey, lime, Campari...our waitress' favorite drink, this was a pleasant tropical, icy drink that I would order again RABA RABA ($12): Citadelle gin, shiso, lime, ginger...this was my favorite cocktail, nice and "green", would love to sit outside on the patio and enjoy this (unfortunately, it was raining) More image than substance (would be a good name for a cocktail). read more

We were looking for a quick meal to grab before a concert at Fenway park, and passing Hojoko we were a little sketched out by the "All-you-can-eat" sign in the window. Once we met with the throng of folks around the park we got a little scared eating at all was going to be next to impossible. We rushed back to Hojoko with little more than an hour left and the host and waitstaff couldn't have been more understanding or accommodating to our situation, they had been through this before... probably every day. We must have hit a sweet spot because we didn't need a reservation and were seated immediately. For folks with dietary restrictions their menu boasts a ton of options to choose from and their udon soups had plenty of add ons and substitutions and also the food tasted great! The waiter was fun and conversational, and understood that we were on a tight timeline, and we shoved the food into our bellies and made the concert in record time. We considered going back for a calmer meal a few days later passing through Boston but unfortunately it would have added an extra hour due to traffic so we skipped, however, as long as Hojoko sticks around I'll always consider it a great dinner option, and will for sure go back again. I did not know that Hojoko was Asian fusion food but I'm glad that it was because I really liked the small dishes. I had the cauliflower, brussel sprouts, eggplant, the crispy chicken wings and the spicy salmon and tuna sushi and snow crab sushi. The sushi was overpriced for what I was getting... it was fine but nothing to write home about. The small dishes were great and my favorite was the brussel sprouts and cauliflower. I really enjoyed the chicken wings crispiness but the gochujang sauce was overpowering with the saltiness. I would have added sugar to balance this dish out then it would be perfect. I try to take some decent pictures but they were heavy on the color lighting there so everything came out red. They have music and I guess this place is a turns into a lounge with a crystal ball in the middle. The interior of this place is very cool with an 80s vibe. The food was good and I really liked the spicy miso ramen. The broth was good but you could feel that the noodles weren't homade. When we got seated by the host I asked him what he recommended and in the middle of him telling us the waiter interrupted saying he "got us" and shooed him away awkwardly. I came here after a day at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum with a friend on a crisp, winter afternoon in March of 2021. I tried to surprise them with a cute location and wanted to show that I appreciate them through good food and vibes! We both really enjoyed the ambiance and the food, as this gives major underground, Japanese dive bar energy. The music was hip-hop, and we sat at a picturesque, couch table. I'd say the food is decent, but I do wish the food came out a tad bit hotter. I think the food quality depends on how busy they are, as I came back a different time and noticed that if they are really busy the food lacks the same attention to detail in regards to flavor and presentation. I came back on a busy weekend for dinner, and the food came out cold. I do understand that people get busy, however I think the hallmark of any good relationship (esp. that w/ a restaurant), is consistency. I think if I came back, I would just come for drinks and the small plates. I tried the shrimp toast here, and it was AMAZING! It was an umami party in my mouth. However, the toast is a bit fatty so one or two pieces was more than enough. The ramen was good, however I think it was missing something that I couldn't quite place my finger on - I think it needed more of a fatty mouthfeel to really carry the complex flavors of a ramen broth well. Maybe we came on the wrong day when there were too many residual Red Sox fans. Maybe it's because we didn't drink and get too inebriated to care. First thing I noticed was the unbelievable noise that made it literally impossible to have a conversation even across a small table. Then I was hit with maybe the biggest reason I can't give this place a better rating. We had tried to order the fried chicken and wings and were told that despite me having a shellfish allergy, that they couldn't accommodate cooking other fried things in a separate receptacle. I was fine not eating the chicken but I was pretty disappointed by the lack of compromise. I'm fortunate to not have a severe allergy but other people may have struggled even more. Otherwise, I enjoyed the food. The okonomiyaki was a little fishy, but flavorful. The peanuts in the charred cauliflower was a nice touch - I enjoyed the mix of flavors. I ordered the cheeseburger and the meat was very tender and rich and paired nicely with the other flavors in the burger. Service was a little slower at the beginning but got progressively better. To be perfectly honest, I don't think I'd come back, but I think it's more a place to get drunk with friends than anything else. read more

This place has great vibes for a date or group outing. The decor is rock/retro/eclectic with Japanese touches - all kind of odd when put together but also entertaining. Highly recommend making a reservation, so you don't have to stand outside and wait in the cold! My boyfriend and I both had sake. I had the Kunizakari Nigori (unfiltered sake), and I loved it. It reminds of the Chinese fermented rice dish (tian jiu niang). In terms of food, we loved the salmon sashimi, crispy nori taco, and spicy miso ramen. The Hojoko cheeseburger was good but underwhelming (also not worth $18). Service was decent. Prices were a bit steep, but a date night in Boston is pretty much going to cost $80-$100 with food and drinks. Happy to have found another place for Asian/fusion cuisine. read more

For the owner/manager: There is a clear issue with organization and service. We had three different servers throughout our meal and they showed up infrequently. Each dish we ordered came out at a different time which made eating in a group of three a weird experience. It would make sense if the place was packed, but it was relatively quiet for a Tuesday night. Correcting these issues will bump Hojoko to a 4/5. read more

I can't comment on the food, but I had a fabulous night with friends at Hojoko Boston. Cute décor, and fun vibes. It's located in front of Fenway Park. It made my night when I heard Journey performing as I walked by. I felt the need to walk towards the music and took my time heading into Hojoko. A friend of mine celebrated his birthday here. We had a great night of drinks and dancing. DJ and music were fantastic. It was nice seeing everyone have a good time. Just a whole lot of dancing and smiles. I had a couple of Ozeki's, which gave me a little buzz. Just tipsy enough to let my hair down and get wild lol It was super busy on this street. Not sure if it's just because of the concert, or it's a weekend thing. Traffic wasn't moving when we turned on the street. Rating on just the food I tried; Yikes! Sister showed me their episode on Phantom Gourmet and it looked amazing and fun. Tried their habernero honey chicken and hmm.. it's different, you can definitely taste the habernero and honey which is good but nothing great to the taste. It's super spicy which I'm not complaining about, because I love spicy food but 2 pieces of chicken wings for $9 is pretty damn pricey. As a huge fan of O-ya, i was super excited to try this new Cushman restaurant. I loved the cute hipstery modern vibe at Hojoko and they even played DBZ in the background! They also happened to have a pacman game machine right across the bar which i thought was really cool. I REALLY wanted to like this place but the food here was just soooooooo disappointing. We ordered the fried salmon fins with truffle salt, the oyako rice bowl, torched uni with nori butter, salmon belly with scallion ginger oil, and their grilled mackerel, but every single dish was on a bit on the disappointing side. The combinations of the ingredients for each of the dishes were kind of just mehhh and boring for me. In addition, everything was just SOOOOOOOOO salty! The dishes were actually so salty that i literally had to squint my eyes a few times and that says a lot since i consider myself to be someone that likes my food on the saltier side. Parking was near impossible for us because we went on a Red Sox game night, so we figured that we'd just "catch" a movie and park at the Regal Cinemas garage a couple blocks away to have our parking ticket stamped and validated at the theater for 4 dollars :) read more

Overall 3.5 stars. Location is great! Located in Fenway and next to verb hotel. The vibe is modern and cool. Street parking can be difficult depending when you go, but there are plenty of parking lots around. Hip spot to get drinks with old friends, nice spot for a date if you can get a seating outdoors! Seating include indoors or outdoors (there's an outdoor seating area in front and outdoor seating area by the hotel pool in the back). Food: We got the brussels sprouts, hamachi (yellowtail) collar, shitake mushroom tempura roll, karaage, salmon nigiri, and eggplant. The brussels sprouts was refreshing; nicely charred and the right amount of vinaigrette with a nice Japanese twist with shiso. The hamachi collar was slightly over cooked-it wasn't as moist as ones I've had in the past and I think the cut wasn't as fatty. Since we are talking about fish, the salmon nigiri was a little fishy and wasn't fresh. I wouldn't recommend the eggplant- but that's coming from someone who isn't fond of eggplants in general. The karaage was perfectly cooked and would definitely get it again if I were to come back- I wished they had a sauce to pair with it though. The mushroom tempura roll is an interesting twist! Service they were attentive in checking on us, but I felt like they missed a few things. Such as we were told that the sake we ordered was out after they brought out the substitute- although it's not a big deal, because the sake was delicious I would assume their servers would be on the same page on what is available and what isn't. I also thought it was a little weird that the server who brought us a different sake also didn't bring us sake cups until asked. I came here for their re-opening post-Covid in September. I was really looking forward to the Japanese fusion concept and loved the groovy, tiki, tropical but also rock and roll Japanese vibes going on in the restaurant. I made a reservation for 7pm and we were seating immediately in their outdoor patio area. I ordered the spicy salmon roll, which was recommended by our waitress. It was super interesting on paper because it's supposed to have Oaxacan peppers added in for an extra kick. But it just tasted like a normal salmon roll and there was no kick or spice in it at all (and should not be called "spicy" salmon roll). For $12, this really didn't seem worth it, also because you only get six pieces. A roll like this in other sushi restaurants would be half the price. We also ordered the funky chicken ramen ($18) which came with 48 hour chicken broth, soy egg, menma, robata grilled koji chicken. This was pretty good and the broth tasted SO flavorful. The chicken was tender and not dry and would definitely recommend the ramen over any other dish here. But for $18, I expected some more high quality ingredients added in but it was so conventional and nothing really stood out. Also, the portion size for the ramen, like the sushi was tiny. I'm so used to going to ramen joints that stuff you silly but the bowl was minuscule. So disappointing. Drink wise, I ordered the Saturn (citadelle gin, lemon, passion fruit, falernum, almond) which was light and sweet yet refreshing and not sickeningly sweet like other cocktails ($13). Also ordered the 5, 6, 7, 8 (prairie organic vodka, violette, lemon, egg white, mango foam) ($13) which I believe is the drink that hojoko is most known for. This was pretty light and refreshing too but it was so tiny!! Overall, I think the portion sizes here are pretty small and comes at a hefty price point, even if you only order a drink and one entree (no appetizers). I also thought the drinks were pretty watered down and the flavors were lacking in the sushi. This restaurant is attached to The Verb Hotel. It's a super cute and fun atmosphere, with eclectic decor that channels a music vibe. My coworker and I went on a Wednesday night and it was fairly busy (most tables were full), and service was super slow. We ordered edamame and roasted cauliflower for appetizers. Both were good, but nothing too special. We also got the Funky Chicken Ramen and I was pretty underwhelmed. The chicken skewer was cooked extremely well, but the only other ingredients in the dish were menma and an egg - to add some spicy chili sauce was another $1 on top of noodles and chicken that were already $17. So, all in all, pretty pricey for a bland meal and wildly slow service. There are a lot of other places nearby to explore, so I'd recommend one of those instead. read more

TLDR: After a bumpy start, we had a great time and the food is awesome. I made the mistake of making a reservation for dinner 30 minutes before a Sox game and assumed the hotel would hold parking for guests. I was wrong. On the way to Hojoko, I called the restaurant and asked about parking, the person I spoke to had no idea about the parking and could not transfer me to the hotel's front desk because "I don't know the number off the top of my head." We pulled up and the lot was full. Luckily we were able to fine a nearby lot that was reasonable and walked over. When we got to the door, there were two security guards who sternly wanted to know our plan for the night. When we explained that we had reservations, they eased up, carded us, gave us bands, and joked around. The hostess was on the phone when we arrived and did not make eye contact with us or acknowledge that she saw us. Luckily, another staff member seated us. Our server was fantastic, and the drinks are creative. We ordered many small plates and shared the burger which was spectacular. Highlights included the Brussels sprouts, friend chicken, and chicken wings. The patio is comfortable and great for people watching. Overall a great experience once we got in the door! read more

Recently overhauled menu is a lot shorter but the most dishes are full size now. The funky chicken ramen is decent, with a very delicious yet unorthodox chicken for ramen. Japanese ramen often uses slices of meat, but this chicken was a full skewer of grilled tender chicken. My friend enjoyed her katsu over rice as well. The vibe is hipster-bar night, with plenty of Asian bar foods on the menu. It's loosely styled after an izakaya/Japabese bar. I would give them a try if you're looking for something new or a drink. Definitely not your classic Japanese restaurant, so come with an open mind. The second time, I went at night, might've been better to eat earlier. I ordered the Snow Crab California roll, Funky Chicken Ramen, and the Doggzilla hotdog. The ramen was delicious!! I've never had chicken ramen before and it was really good, however, I definitely will still prefer pork ramen ANY DAY, but I know they did chicken to be neutral for their variance of customers. The california roll was good [not good enough for $16, I expect some caviar, not sprinkles of tobiko]. I took a bite out of the hotdog, not much to say about it, I took a bite and don't remember much. Very delicious & unique items on the menu. The prices were a bit high but the food was very good. We had the eggplant, truffle sushi, as well as the California roll! Definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a bunch of unique dishes. The inside was very nice. They also have TVs which is great for watching the games. Visited Hojoko with a large party on a rainy Thursday night. It was one of those times where I kinda feel bad for the group of servers tasked with corralling our rowdy group. I was a bit disappointed when the bartender gave a hint of attitude after a different glass was requested for a drink. We moved to our table and chaos ensued. We basically ordered one or two of everything and shared them among the 13 of us. However, that makes it hard to write a review because I wasn't always sure exactly what I was eating. Here are the things I can remember: Wasabi Roulette - What fun! Great concept. Five bites and one has extra wasabi. Whoever gets that one receives the baby bottle full of rumchata. Brains on Crack - Not my favorite. The sauce they were served in was good but I did not enjoy the texture of the brains. Dogzilla - Really good dog. Strong smokey flavor in the dog that was split and stuffed with jalapenos and american cheese. Fries served with the dog were good too. Torn. I would say 4 for the actual place and ambience itself, as well as a few good dishes, but others were definitely more hit or miss. Came here twice- first time I ended up sharing a bunch of small plates with a group of people, which i really liked, them the second time I ordered an individual dish, which I Wasn't that impressed with. First, the good stuff- the wasabi roulette is pretty fun, even though I ended up losing (I never eat wasabi so despite wanting to vomit, I still thought it was fun). The small dishes like the karaage fried chicken and tuna poke were also really good. Wagyu short ribs were also super tasty. The second time around, I came on a slightly busier night and had the oyako rice bowl, which was beyond underwhelming. I don't understand the 3.5 star rating for this place. Hojoko is a great place - I'll walk you through exactly why this restaurant has to be in your future plans. First, just the atmosphere and hip vibe of the place. So many colors in a dim environment, it feels like you are on a different planet! Plus the Cowboy Bebop playing on the projector screen on the wall gives it some more Japanese touch. So young, so hip. We came without reservations on a Sunday evening and were seated immediately at the sushi counter. It gives great views of the kitchen staff doing their thing, although I think the dining area seems more than comfortable. But the real greatness starts with the food and service. We started with some Japanese beer on tap - ice cold. We ordered a bunch of food items: half orders of the spicy salmon and shiitake mushroom tempura rolls, Ume shiso chicken skewer, and BRAINS ON CRACK. Yes, it's real brain, deep-fried. We even asked the chef to show us the raw brain. It's the real deal, and it's actually pretty good - worth a try if you're feeling adventurous. Also great was the Ume shiso chicken off the robata grill (very tender chicken thigh) and the shiitake mushroom tempura roll (rich taste, unique and full of flavor).  The service was incredible, some of the best I've experienced in a looong time. As soon as we arrived, our server asked if it was our first time (it was), and inquired about allergies. I myself am allergic to shellfish, and boy oh boy did she work to accommodate that as much as possible. I really wanted to try the brains on crack but it had shellfish in the sauce. Hojoko's food would be a pretty standard fare in Japan, yet it does stand out in Boston as one of a few Izakaya restaurants out here. My favorite quality of this restaurant is certainly the decor and vibe. It's so hip and fun that you'll want to come back. Playing music in the background, with a big projector showing a movie at all times, an open kitchen that lets you smell what's going on, and an energetic environment, it's a fun place to go hang out. The food option were good. The portions are a little bit small as they want you to order a lot of plates; yet the price of each plate is akin to that of a large place, so we did end up not fully satisfied on this front. The cooks are pretty good, to be honest. The food is not spectacular, but the diversity of flavors do make up for it. We ordered the calf brains, okonomiyaki (a little bit too deep fried, but the sauce was less sweet than usual making it pretty palatable), and a rice bowl which was on the simple side. read more
