In town for the night and had a taste for sushi. This place had a nice yelp rating so we gave it a try. Definitely not a five-star sushi restaurant in my opinion, but I wouldn't go as low as three either. It fit the bill for sushi and we got our fill. We did like the roll or hand roll option on many of the choices because we love a good hand roll. Big perk for us. They did have hibachi, some noodle and Thai options on the menu as well, but we didn't partake so I can't really speak to that. The service was great and our waitress was very attentive. The dim lighting created a pretty cozy feel, so definitely a good option if you want a more intimate setting. read more

Nice little Japanese restaurant where I think everyone can find something they like. I got thr udon noodles soup (my favorite menu item)....perfect foe a cold day. It comes with tempura veggies and tempura shrimp which were very crispy. I also got the eel Avocado sushi....another favorite. My friend got the hibachi and liked her scallops. I strongly believe that Hokkaido is the best sushi restaurant in the CSRA. While the inside is small and not much to write home about, the food and service are outstanding. The fish they source is clearly fresh and melts in your mouth and the rice to fish ratio is actually appropriate so you actually get a good bit of fish that isn't swallowed up by rice so that you get full off carbs. The tempura here is like eating a crunchy, fluffy cloud - the best I've had and I've eaten at some very high end Japanese restaurants - the stuff is just magic! I absolutely love getting the dinner sashimi bento box which comes with buttery delicious fish, gyoza, tempura, california rolls, and rice. My husband and I usually order a few rolls to share as well. Hokkaido is worth the trip even if you're not close to Columbia County. The quality is outstanding and the prices even more reasonable. read more

Menu claims Rib eye steak as an option on the habachi menu. The only thing ribeye was the price. I spoke to the manager and be asked me how I knew it wasn't ribeye and asked what it was. I told him I've been eating ribeye steaks over 60 years, I know what he served me was a low quality, over cooked, sirloin. He went to the kitchen then back and apologized, said they just received a meat order from another vendor. Steak was terrible and they did nothing but had me pay for a ribeye. I came here on a whim with a friend and was pleasantly surprised with this restaurant's menu. We went with the Mt. Fuji sushi roll, beef yaki-udon, and the tofu thai red curry. Everything tasted amazing and was fresh. They probably had one of the most authentic tasting thai curry I've tried in Augusta/Evans area so far -- though I will say that it tasted a little unusual initially when we ate it right after the sushi and yaki-udon, so I wouldn't recommend that to get the full experience. Like Sunny Wok, Hokkaido is one of the best restaurants for Japanese food. I came here a few times before and I came here again for lunch after Church on Sunday. I'm so glad to have purchased the Hibachi Lunch combo with vegetables, soup and fried rice and it was excellent. I love Hokkaido, the service great and extremely quick with stellar food. I came and ordered the shrimp gyoza with a side of salmon sashimi the waitress was extremely nice and pleasant, she brought my drink and not long after brought me my food. I noticed I didn't have chop sticks or a bowl I then asked for them both and she immediately brought them both she was very nice. I first tried the sashimi, it was absolutely delicious, it had great mouth feel and amazing taste paired with the soy sauce. I then tried the shrimp gyoza, it was obviously great it even came with some teriyaki sauce that enhanced the flavor even more. Keep in mind the ambience in this restaurant is great and usually has no wait. I give The Hokkaido restaurant 5 stars I can definitely recommend this restaurant. read more

Hokkaido is now our number one choice for Japanese food. The restaurant is small with not many seats and every time we go the place is packed. When we visited for the first time the restaurant was full but we were seated immediately and service was very prompt throughout our meal. I ordered the hibachi steak served with stir fried vegetables and arguably the best fried rice I've ever had. The steak was cooked perfectly and very tender. In the past at other Japanese restaurants, they ask how I'd like my steak cooked and it almost always comes out overdone and tough. Hokkaido earned a star from me on that alone. Their sushi menu is expansive and has something for everyone. We ordered a roll from their specials menu (which we did have to ask for) as well as a roll listed on their main menu. The double dragon roll had shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, avocado, eel sauce and spicy sauce. I have never had sushi that contained tempura where the tempura was served hot and fresh. It was phenomenal to have the hot juxtaposed to the cold, the sweet with a mild level of spice. I think Hokkaido is a great spot for lunch or dinner for two or a small group due to the size of the restaurant. We cannot wait to return. read more

We tried Hokkaido after a recommendation from a friend. The food is 5 stars. Everything we tried was delicious and we will absolutely be returning for that. The 4 stars is because of our server. I'm not entirely sure what was going on but she spoke at a level that would make you think we were the only people in a library and she was telling us her darkest secret. This place doesn't look like much on the outside, but once you enter, you are transformed into a different place! The lighting and decor was good. We went at 3:30 and no one was in there. I ordered the salmon hibachi and my friend ordered the chicken hibachi with no mushrooms. It came with soup and salad and when the soup came mine had mushrooms and hers did not. I was impressed that they took initiative to not put mushrooms in her soup without her having to ask. The ginger dressing for the salad was too watery and not as flavorful as I had hoped. The hibachi was good. I really loved how they did their fried rice. It wasn't full of soy sauce, but had green onions and eggs. The rice was also sticky yet fluffy. I definitely enjoy coming to this place. I've been here many times, but just recently started this Yelp situation, so now I'll be able to embarrass myself in terms of how much I come here lol. This place has very good sushi and the staff is very friendly. Normally, this place is pretty clean as well (I've had dirty dishes a time or two, but they are great about fixing that). I think their portion size is great - in terms of hibachi, and their sushi is ON POINT. I ALWAYS order the Hanada Roll (FAVEEEEEEE), and normally, I also get the cheese rangoons (normally better to split between at LEAST two people, because they will have you FULL). The only real complaint(s) I have about Hokkaido are the lighting situation (it is extremely dark inside for some reason lol), and the cleanliness, as I said. Great deal. Okay food. I ordered the Early Bird Special which comes with your choice of two meats (chicken, steak, shrimp, scallops, or salmon), veggies, rice, salad, and soup. It's available Monday- Friday from 3-5pm for about $15. Not a bad deal. I went with the chicken and shrimp. It wasn't my favorite. It was a little bland. Not a lot of flavor. It needed too much doctoring up with soy sauce and sweet chili sauce. Thankfully I've had them both at home already. The shrimp was over cooked and the chicken was a bit on the dry side. The veggies were the best part. Perfectly cooked and still crisp. I don't think I would try it again. There's just too many other options available to go to the same place twice and the food isn't great. First impressions matter. read more

Oh God! Finished eating. I'm very happy I tried this place. I think I found a new favorite! So first off I ordered to go, I have extra kids with me today and didn't want to do that whole evolution, so I opted to get it to go. I took my time and even showed up late to get my food. I stood there for a while and no one came to greet me or even ask if I needed to be seated. After a while of standing behind 2 others who were also there waiting for someone to greet them, I decided to barge ahead to the register and ask about my order... it wasn't done yet. I was a little annoyed, it's my first time here and they're off to a bad start! Lol. So I sat down nearby and waited. I waited a little bit then asked again, they said it wasn't done yet. Ok, come on man! I'm hungry, the wife's hungry, the kids are berserkers! Lol. Finally they bring my food up and then rush off, I stood there for a second, no one paid anymore attention to me, so I just politely said thank you very much as I left. Wow were they obviously understaffed for dinner time lol. It's a good sign they were busy, and a bad sign they were so rushed they were having trouble keeping up... ALL SAID AND DONE! OMG, the food is so good. My wife and kids are diggin in and my face was stuffed. I've been looking for good quality Japanese in the CSRA and I'm happy to say I found one other than Osaka that I like! The fried rice is "lighter" than most places, and at first it threw me off. I'm used to more...stuff, and soy sauce, but on the healthier side of my life I am actually very happy with it. And the chicken and veggies are the same way, very "basic" and not a ton of sauces masking the veggie and chicken flavors; I was pleasantly surprised! The crab rangoons were so amazing!! They had crab in them! Most just have cheesy crab sauce. I really wish i had ordered more! The pink lady roll and the crouching dragon are my absolute new favs! I want more, I'm already kinda full but I could easily sit and put down another round. All I'm missin is some good sake. In spite of the crappy initial interaction I had, I WILL be back. **update: I've been back multiple times now and the service is much better than my first visit** I hope next time the service is better, I'll try at another time to see if it's better or the same. There aren't many people in there so costumers can really enjoy their foods, the privacy level is medium well, but still is an excellent restaurant. Second, the staffs there are very very nice. She's very polite and friendly, 10% tips are not enough for her! Last but not least, the cuisines. There are lots of delicious foods and appetizers in the menu, but we suggest the hibachi ribeye steak and the noodle in soup soba. The rice along the steak is good too! Missing sushi and Japanese cuisine after moving from Hawaii, we found this place on help. Based on reviews and pictures, it seemed promising so we decided to give it a try on the way home for dinner Ordered-- --Gyoza: Typical gyoza. Crisp bottom and tender texture which was a nice touch. --Cheese Rangoon: a bit gooey on the inside for my taste. Probably comes down to personal preference. Overall I liked that the taste wasn't overwhelming with cream cheese. --Sweetheart Roll: nice balance of crunchy and tender. No strong taste of fish but the texture of the fish was still there. --Spicy Tuna: great texture and kick. Loved that I was all ahi (tuna). --Alaska Roll: once again great balance. Probably not our favorite of them all but it was good. We would definitely come again. Very affordable sushi and great quality especially for its location. Would love to know where they get their fish shipped in from. We left satisfied and far from disappointed. Four stars because while it was good, it didn't beat the outstanding scale just yet. This is the best sushi I've found so far in the CSRA. I don't want to be "that guy", but I've been to Japan and sushi in America is now ruined for me. Well...not exactly ruined, but it's hard to find something that tastes great compared to the real thing in the country of origin. Most places in the US stick to rolls filled with American ingredients, which is fine, but sometimes I crave that Japanese style. Hokkaido does a great job with their Nigiri and Sashimi. I know you can't get that pulled-from-the-ocean taste this far inland, but the fish is still pretty good. Like I mentioned before, with so many places focusing on rolls, it's hard to find good nigiri and sashimi that focuses on the fish. You get that here. My wife and I like going on empty stomachs and splitting the "Love Boat", which is an actual wooden boat filled with all types of things. Great for sampling. read more

The atmosphere is very beautiful and chill. I started off with a miso soup and plum wine. The soup and wine were delicious. I had Thai noodles as my main dish. The staff was very friendly.
