Hokkaido Sushi is the OMG food spot for its price and taste. This spot has been around since the 2000s, and I believe it is still a hidden gem. Inside, the restaurant has open seating, is clean, and has fast and friendly service. All you have to do is grab a paper menu, fill it out, and return it to the counter to order. There's also a free self-serve miso soup and red bean dessert station which are both very delicious. I would definitely recommend this place if you're looking for affordable and delicious sushi! TIP: if you use the condiments at the self-serve station, please put it back after you're done as everyone else has to use those few condiments as well. FOOD REVIEW: Shaggy Dog Roll (4/5): imitation crab along with tempura and spicy mayo make for a light and tasty roll. Hawaii Volcano (5/5): spicy flavors of the tuna combined with the sweetness from the mayo, and the flavor from the tempura, all I have to say is OMG. Wow this place was incredible, both for the quality and the price. The handrails, spicy tuna (left) and spider (right) were crispy on the outside and warm/rich on the inside. The dragon roll was delicious with the contrast between the crunchiness of the soft shell crab and the smoothness of the eel and avocado. Lastly, one of my absolute favorite things to eat, sashimi. This sashimi was so fresh and so worth (under $20!!!). In order of preference, I liked the salmon, hamachi, tai (sea bream), tuna, and the tako (octopus). Regardless of what you prefer, I think you'll enjoy any sashimi that you order because it tasted fresh and were quite thick slices. Went on a busy Friday night! The parking lot was filling up quickly, but we found a spot luckily. Their hours posted on their door are different from what's on Google, so I took a picture. There's lots of seating but tables can get limited especially when it's busy like tonight. The service was okay. They only came to clear up plates, but that's expected when it's mainly self serve to get plates and utensils. It's a bit chaotic near the register and the self serve area. There are lots of families with little kids so the environment is pretty lively and can get loud. We love the sushi here. The fish in the nigiri pieces are huge and so much cheaper than other places. The salmon is my favorite. The eel tasted a bit too fishy but not terrible. Also got the tempura hand roll and it was good too. I'd recommend eating it first since it got a bit soggy when I saved it for last. read more

Affordable restaurant located in Houston Chinatown, Hokkaido serves well crafted Japanese food for the masses. Hokkaido appeared on the Infatuation's best restaurants in Chinatown Houston, so decided to take a side trip from the Rice Campus with our nephew for an early dinner. It is located in a strip mall just on the outskirts of Chinatown, and shares parking aplenty with many other businesses. He told us that this was a very popular place for Rice students to get their sushi kick, and that he had started to eat sushi recently. This came as a shock, coming from him who had lived most of their life in Japan and South Korea, but had been very hesitant about trying sushi at all (well...well...well...college does change things, doesn't it?). We came to the front to get menus, chose our food at our table, and then brought it back up to order and pay up in front. There wasn't anybody else dining (before 5 pm), but it filled up pretty good by the time we left. While we were waiting for our food, I self served miso soup. It was very good and deserving of a second bowl...plenty of tofu and seafood, and kept at a good temperature (not scalding hot). I wish more places that offered free miso soup would take a little more effort to do it like here. Nephew ordered 11 individual pieces [2 egg ($1.25 each); 3 yellowtail ($1.90); 3 salmon ($1.75); 3 eel ($1.85)] = $19. All had nice fat pieces of fish/egg topping good sushi rice. He also ordered his go-to of udon noodles ($8.55) which is kinda hard to mess up since all the ingredients can be bought pre-made (i.e. you can make a pretty good bowl of udon at home). He said it was good. I ordered 2 rolls: Hokkaido (because you always have to order the house special...$5.65) and Shaggy Dog (because of its name...$9.65). I'm not a fan of cream cheese in maki, but the soft shell crab made up for it, and the portion was generous. Both were a bargain and tasted great. I just wish the tempura cooked items were more fresh...they had been cooked a bit before and was served a bit limp. Looking back, I should have ordered some tuna sashimi to see how their fish quality is. Wife ordered the Teriyaki Steak ($16.95) which proclaimed using Angus Choice Ribeye. It was a generous piece, expertly grilled over an open flame, and came with a bit of salad and white rice. It's good value, and you can afford to order it medium well or even well done, since it is ribeye and all the fat and gristle could use more cooking without risk of drying out. You can self-serve water (there is a self-serve ice dispenser as well), and they will bus your reusable plates and bowls, so a tip is probably deserved. It was a nice mix of different ethnicity and ages dining in, when we left around 6 pm. It was a nice last meal during our great Houston visit. read more

I am updating this review from a 1 star to a 3. I'll explain why, well the service has improved. The cashier was very helpful and kind, so thank her that it's a 3 star now. Everything is pretty much self explanatory, you mark down what you want on a sheet of paper, hand it to the cashier, pay & they'll bring your food. I decided to order their Spider rolls, Tiger eyes roll, tempura hand roll & 1 salmon sushi. *Spider rolls- it was good, the soft shelled crab tasted nice. 3.5/5 *Tiger eyes roll- presentation was bad & I barely got any cream cheese. The salmon was pretty much nonexistent. 2/5 *Tempura hand roll- meh. 2/5 *Salmon sushi- fish didn't taste fresh and I'm glad I only got one. 1.5/5 Overall the food was just subpar but you get what you pay for. Hokkaido is more self-serve where you fill out a sheet of paper with all the different sushi's, go up to the cash register to pay, and sit down for the food to be served to you. My friend and I ordered a variety of different nigiri's and rolls with unagi, tempura, and tuna temaki. Everything tasted incredible but if I had to choose, I would probably skip the ika (squid) since it wasn't as sweet as what I'm used to. But the nigiri that stood out the most to me was the salmon (the fish slices were thick and fresh). I got two rolls and it was plenty, I had never had sushi for under $20 and I had two amazing rolls and miso for $17, I cannot complain. It's a self serve spot which confused me at first since I had never been but with the amount of business they get I understand. The miso was also very flavorful and a good starter while waiting for my rolls (which did not take long at all). They offer unlimited miso soup (which is always flavored with the perfect amount of salty and seafood goodness) and they have the best unlimited red bean dessert! Their red bean dessert isn't too sweet but it's the perfect palate cleanser after rounds and rounds of nigiri and hand rolls. The waitress explained the order process and gave us time to order. They have unlimited miso soup available which is one of my favorite things about this place. I ordered the Agadashi tofu appetizer and it was so soft and flavorful. I also had a Chirashi bowl and shashimi. Presentation of both were very neat and eye catching. The rice in the Chirashi was a little bit sweet and sticky and paired really well with the raw fish. It's medium quality sushi and great prices. Overall it was a good lunch. This spot is worth all the hype. SO DANG GOOD. I took my coworkers here for their first try and they LOVED it. I absolutely love how affordable this place is. Their "nicer" rolls are around $8-9 dollars and their "basic" rolls are $2-5. My favorite roll is the Hawaii Volcano roll because while most sushi restaurants will overdo the sauce and "heaviness" of a roll, at Hokkaido, I can still taste the freshness of the spicy tuna in this roll even through the sauce and tempura ingredients. Other favorites include the Texas Roll and the Dragon roll. AND not to mention...they have unlimited FREE miso soup. I believe the owner of Hokkaido recently opened up IWA YA, a similar sushi place also in Chinatown so I am super excited to try that out as well. Stopped by this hole in the wall Japanese restaurant for the first time . Located in Bellaire , this quaint dining spot had a huge surprise . The decor and ambience reminded of a real authentic Japanese restaurant. They have a drink station where you can serve yourself tea or hot/cold water . You can also help yourself to a bowl of complimentary miso soup ! The prices were very cheap considering the location and for it being sushi . I was pleasantly surprised by the portion size . They try to charge more when you ask for one cup to go. Dine in it's unlimited. My lunch was ordered at 2:30 and they close at 3pm so I wasn't able to eat in according to them. Since by 3pm everything shuts down and no one is allowed to sit inside still. I guess next time it's Iwa Ya Teppanyaki & Sushi right down the street for me. I've been to Hokkaido more times than I can count. This is my go-to sushi spot in Houston/Bellaire and it's an incredible finding and eatery. The sushi here is affordable and for the price, it tastes great. They give out free miso and red bean soup at a station which you can fill up when you dine-in. I've also tried the katsu don and unagi don which are also good options if you don't want straight sushi. They have other options as well you can explore. I would always recommend Hokkaido to my friend who's in Houston and wants a bang for their buck. Service is friendly and the place can be quite busy depending on the time you go. They do close at 3 pm but they do reopen for dinner at 5 pm so be mindful of that. read more
