Very competitive pricing, adequate to generous portioning, great flavors, and, of course, bottomless soup, make this place on my shortlist whenever I'm out in Asia town. The service is fine and orders usually come out in between five and 10 minutes. You'll order at the counter and indicate what table you're going to be sitting at. my usual order is a sushi as well as a beef over rice bowl. Many of my friends here also like getting the tempura and the chirashi bowl. The ambience is decent for chinatown and it's quite clean. I've been here scores of times through the years and can confirm that their portions and quality of food is consistently good. They also have tons of togarashi! This place used to be my go to sushi spot whenever I just wanted a quick bite. However, over the last couple of years the quality has been going down. It's just not what it used to be. It's not as fresh as I'd like.. but it's not the worst? And it's not consistent. Some days the sushi/sashimi will be fresher and better than others. The bento box is a safe option. I tried the katsu don for the first time because my boyfriend always gets it here. This is honestly a great dish for great value! It's only $6.50 and it's super filling. I ordered this for takeout for both me and my boyfriend. I loved that they packed the miso soup to-go for me as well. I ordered chirashi which had a whopping variety of sashimi, shrimp and other toppings not typically found in chirashi. Sushi was large mouth full and fresh. Everything is picture perfect, however the sushi rice was a bit bland as well as the fish itself. Some sushi are aged to bring out the flavors, but this place serves it straight up as well as the rice. It's same for the chirashi. This is a great hidden gem in Chinatown for Japanese food. It's located on the corner and really embodies the Japanese cafe style. The ambience is relaxed and shows signs of the Japanese culture with the wooden decor. They have a plethora of sushi and Japanese options to choose from. All of them are pretty reasonably priced too! I ordered the eel hand roll and chicken katsudon. The eel was so soft and juicy. It paired well with the rice and seaweed. It was a bit soggy but it was kinda expected given the rice was warm. The Chicken Katsudon was the real winner though! The chicken Metsis was so crispy with it's our fried shell. The inside chicken was juicy and bursting with flavor as I but into it. This paired with the sweet grilled onions and egg make for a mouthwatering sensation. The rice was also delicious, seems like it was freshly made. Overall I say the dishes here are great, especially with the cheap value to get this kind of quality. I highly suggest you come here when you get the chance. The assortment of goodies included multiple pieces of each - tuna, spicy tuna, salmon, chopped up scallop, tuna, octopus, imitation crab, tofu, and egg. What a great deal! The fish was all delicious, and it was only $13! - Hokkaido Roll: this roll featured soft shell crab with cream cheese, cucumber, and imitation crab. For $5, we got 6 huge pieces of goodness. - Spider Roll: also featuring soft shell crab along with cucumber, mayo, and roe. It was also $5 for 6 big pieces. - Chicken Katsu: the price of this is worth trying alone. Instead of charging $11-$12 like most other Japanese restaurants, we got a big plate of Katsu with salad and rice for only $7! You seriously can't beat the price. The taste was great too, as the Katsu was super crunchy and was complimented by savory sauce. I will most definitely be back to try some of their other rolls! I use to love Hokkaido but it has recently become inconsistent. For example, the rainbow roll use to have even covering of thick sashimi. However, now the pieces are sometimes super thin and there is not full coverage. 5 stars? No. Affordable? Yes. Each sushi order is around or less than $2. Most of the rolls are ~$5. And then you have a few options of sashimi and hand rolls. This is the definition of bang for your buck. Of course that being said, the quality is not going to be the best, but it will cure that craving you're having, while staying on a budget. The setting is a bit confusing, but what you do is seat yourself at a table, memorize the number, then you go up to the counter and order your pieces through their paper menu. You pay as you submit your order to the cashier, and it will only take about 5 minutes for your order to be brought to your table. Talk about quick service! They do have a self-serve area for water, and if you want any miso soup, which is refillable! So yes, if you love miso soup, refill away! I have not much in regards to going into detail about the sushi, as it's very straightforward and not to compare to restaurants like Uchi. I will say though, I was a bit disappointed with the hand rolls. They were mostly just fish and rice without any additional fillings like cucumbers or avocado... except the Spider hand roll did come with cucumbers. Again, a place for cravings. Have to say that this was some of the best Japanese food I've ever had. Ordered the teriyaki steak and the dragon roll. Normally at most places teriyaki steak is served with a very salty glaze - here it was served in a beef broth which made for a nice sweet taste without overdoing it. But the particular mention was the quality of beef and how it was cooked. The dragon roll was also awesome. The sushi felt very fresh and the texture of tempura was just right. The crispy pork belly on top added a nice crunch. If I lived nearby I'd probably visit very often. read more

Once you've claimed your spot and the sushi you desire you make your way to the counter and order and pay. They will ask you where are you seated and you will show them, and any drinks and condiments are from the counter unless you want tea or water. The freebies and utensils are to the left of the counter. And restroom even further left. They have a back room they usually open during weekends because it can get crazy packed. I've been coming here for years! Ever since my kids were little. And to this day I still regard this spot as one of the best values in town. Not only that but the sushi is amazing! The best! The free miso soup is a perk that even makes this place more special. And it is soooo good. This is my teenage son's favorite place to eat and we come here often. I love the Shaggy Doll roll and the Nabeyaki UDON. The Chicken Fried Rice is also fabulous as is practically everything on the menu. The portion sizes are very generous and as I said the value is unbeatable in my opinion. I love the ambience. This place almost feels like a second home in many ways. We know the staff by now and they are all great! I have never had a bad customer service experience and the food comes out quickly and is of the highest quality! Absolutely delicious food at a reasonable price. There are congee and miso stations serving delicious soups for free with no limit to how much refills a person can get. Each dish is big too so it fills you right up! The service was a bit slow, as you order by going to the front counter and telling them what rolls or bowls you want.
