Location was good, but it is right near Guadalupe, so for those who might be more concerned about that, you will want to take note. The hotel is next to The Mill, which is a decent mall and made it convenient to find food and go shopping for essentials like if you needed a shirt or some sundries, there's a DD's Discount store at the Mill and a nice Rainforest Restaurant for a fun experience w/kids. Hotel staff are ok, but not particularly friendly. I asked for a later check out and they extended it 30 minutes even though it was technically their fault that I even needed that b/c our room card was deactivated and didn't work for 3 times so we went up and down the elevators several times and that wasted our time and cost us time for packing. There's a pool, but it's outdoors and right in the parking lot and didn't feel/look very safe, it is fenced off, but still very exposed. The room we got was spacious and pretty nice, I think they did give me a bigger one on a higher floor per my request and b/c I have platinum status, it was very clean, so I appreciated that, I could tell the cleaning staff worked hard. The breakfast was standard HIE fare, but pretty good spread, I saw more variety than other HIE's but their hours are limited, we stayed on a Sunday night into Monday and the breakfast hours were earlier on a weekday, but I think that's true for all HIEs. Breakfast staff was kind. Finally, the hotel alarm went off continuously for about 5 minutes after we checked out but were hanging out in the lobby area to eat our lunch and there was no apologies or explanation for what happened. Staff seemed nonchalant and did not asked if customers were ok, etc. There was another family about to check in (grandparents w/a mom and her kids) and the kids were very startled and the HIE staff here didn't even check on them, I thought that was not good customer service. read more

The rooms are big and usually have a couch. The amenities are fairly good- they provide soap from Dove. Breakfast is free and they usually have a good selection of proteins, fruit, breads and juices. Coffee is always available and the service is usually good. The beds are comfy. We like the grounds-keeper because he is always friendly to us. There is a lot to do around the area since the mall is right across the parking lot. The downsides are sometimes only 1 elevator works out of two. The pool is also small and gets dirty very quickly. This place is usually at a competitive rate, so, you are getting a little bit more than what you pay for when you add the free breakfast. I think it's a wonderful place to stay for the price. read more

Absolutely horrible way to run a hotel. I called hotel directly to book a room after my flight was cancelled. Hotel confirmed my booking with a credit card hold. When I arrived, the front desk said that they were sold out and didn't have a room for me because their booking system was not working correctly. Enjoyed a nice 3-night stay here recently and there's a lot to like about this hotel. Rooms were clean and surprisingly larger than expected, staff was friendly and professional, and the breakfast buffet was fully stocked (the pancake machine actually worked ;). The location is nice, located near the Mills mall and some fast food options. As for the not-so-good, there is quite a bit of road noise due to its proximity to the freeway, so earplugs are recommended. The pool and jacuzzi situation was a bit sketch too, so there's definitely room for some maintenance improvement there. As for any hotel, you'll have your share of rowdy patrons- and this place is no exception. All in all, an above average 4-star hotel in the HIE lineup. read more

I have stayed in this location multiple times this year and each time; the experience has gradually gotten worse. The front desk team has always been top-notch and I've done a great job. The staff in hotel seem nice as well as I'm going back and forth during the time I stay. The bad things were three different visits the tubs would not drain properly, old items from previous guests in the room, and as of 2 days ago, you have to pay for parking. We usually stay at the location in old town Scottsdale but we wanted to be closer to family. I was a bit unsure about the location but it turned out to be a great stay! The room was very comfortable so was the king size bed. There's a small fridge and a microwave that's perfect for all of our leftovers. The daily breakfast bar had several yummy options and we had breakfast there the whole week that we stayed there. The staff was very friendly and professional, they definitely added to the enjoyment of our stay there. It's also located next to AZ Mills Mall and close to the freeway. I would have loved to give this place 4 stars but the ants were OUT OF CONTROL. I called before I booked to see if the pool was open and operational and they told me yes so I was excited. However once I got my swimsuit on and got downstairs the ants were ridiculous I couldn't even have a good time I was to busy fighting ants off. I wasn't sure about staying at a Holiday Inn in the Phoenix area because the previous two times I stayed at one of these hotels were terrible. One was the other Holiday Inn in Tempe by the lake and another was in Mesa. However, I was surprised that this was a decent hotel. It cost me about $240 for a two night stay on a holiday weekend, plus about $33 in taxes and fees. Although I was caught off guard by the $100 security deposit which was not mentioned when I booked my reservation. After checking in, I looked at the hotel page again and the deposit is not listed. I wasn't mad about it because almost every hotel has a security deposit of some kind, but the hotel or IHG should make it known if a deposit is required for a stay. Check in is at 4pm which is rather late in my opinion but I guess it's due to the cleaning schedule because many of the rooms on my floor were still being cleaned, even at 5pm. There are two elevators but only one was in operation. It was also very slow so I used the stairs most of the time. The hallways smelled like old bananas and the stairwell smelled like chlorine. I booked a "King Standard" room only because it was cheaper than the standard room for some reason. Everything was clean and there was enough space for at least 2-3 people. Big bed, a couch, a large desk, a closet, a bench by the dresser, a microwave, coffee machine, and mini fridge. I never use the TV in hotel rooms. The bathroom was relatively small in comparison to the room and I had a hard time shutting the door from the inside unless I squeezed by the wall or stood in the bathtub. I don't know why hotels make the bathroom doors swing inward instead of outwards. The sink was outside of the bathroom. The drain in the tub was either clogged or drained slowly on purpose because I was standing in about an inch and a half of water every time I used the shower. The breakfast foods were not good, even by Holiday Inn standards. On the first day I had the egg and cheese omelets which were ok, but the sausage patties were rubbery and bland, the biscuits were cold, the gravy was very salty, and the bacon was so crunchy that it shattered into little bits as soon as I took a bite. The orange juice tasted like plastic but the apple juice and cranberry juice didn't taste like anything. There was plenty of butter and jams but for some reason, there was no bread. There were some danishes but they were hard like hockey pucks. The pancake machine was on but it wouldn't spit out the pancakes because the conveyor belt was stuck. I don't know if this is a common occurrence, but a lot of people were hanging around the back of the building smoking cigarettes and drinking beer. They didn't look like employees and I don't know if they were hotel guests, but I doubt it. Overall it wasn't a bad visit. I'd probably stay here again if I was in the area. The mall is right across the street so you can get something to eat or do some shopping. Edit: I don't usually do this but I sent in a comment to IHG about the security deposit. I made it clear that I was not upset and I was just trying to point out the discrepancy with the hotel's policy after booking a reservation. Someone from customer service replied a little while later and said that they would forward my comment to the hotel manager. A little while after that the hotel manager reached out to me but they took my comment as a complaint. They informed me that the website does list the deposit fee. However, you only see it if you book a reservation through the website. I booked my reservation on the IHG app on a mobile device and the deposit fee is not shown there. The hotel manager said they will update the information on the website because it lists the old deposit fee of $200 when it is $100 now. They didn't mention anything about the app. read more

What a dump. We stayed one night. The elevators didn't work after the fire alarm was set off which appeared to be a reoccurring problem. That's a safety issue. Will a real fire be ignored as a false alarm? It's an ADA issue the rest of the time. The place was filthy. We washed all our clothes the next day at our new hotel. The breakfast buffet was really bad. The neighborhood is unsafe. The place should probably be inspected and closed down. read more

If you have a gift certificate or complementary stay to book at this hotel, BEWARE. I won a free stay here and the certificate was a paper certificate stating the length of stay and who it was issued by. There was nothing on the certificate stating that I needed to call the hotel directly to have them set the stay up over the phone, but the manager refused to honor my free stay because I did not do this. I ended up paying 200 dollars to stay here when it should have been free, because I booked the stay online like most people do these days. I wasn't even offered a discounted price for the "miscommunication". The manager was nice enough but this is unacceptable. When we checked in, the front desk agent wasn't familiar with how to handle the certificate and asked us to take care of it with the manager when we checked out the next morning. If I had known at the time that it wouldn't be honored, I would have kindly asked to just cancel the reservation and not stayed there. This is terrible customer service! read more

Not a bad option for the area. It is clean and well kept. Breakfast was pretty decent except they were very slow keeping up with empty trays. Some things were never even reported on a busy weekend. Also, our room was never cleaned in the 3 nights we stayed. We had to empty our own trash and I made the beds. I don't go on vacation to clean my own room. Also asked the front desk to have clean towels brought up. Came back that night and no clean towels were brought up. If you don't mind the above then I'd stay here. We have been going to Arizona for several years to attend Spring Training with the Dodgers. We always stay at this Holiday Inn Express. ( March 2nd to 5th this year). It has always been clean and friendly. This year it was very run down and dirty. Jacuzzi was disgusting. The front desk had a lady who was very unfriendly if not rude. I walked in to a guest being super disrespectful and rude to an employee because he was having trouble with his card. The employee was patient and calm when I would have went off. The guy even tried to involve me at one point and I told him I didn't mind waiting an extra few minutes. I spoke with the manager the next day to make sure she was aware that her employee was not at fault the night before. She handled the whole situation gracefully and understood and trusted her employee. I have so much respect for her. The people working also helped me print out my resume and stopped me to give me good paper! The breakfast was great [hmmmmmm cinnabon] and I quite honestly cant wait to come back and see the staff. read more

Excellent Stay!!! We just stayed out in Tempe for 4 days to attend a family wedding and could not be happier with the service at this hotel. Jasmine, Matt, and Joe the manager all made the stay very enjoyable. They went out of their way to solve a sticky issue we had with an internet reservation service. The rooms are large, the size of a mini suite with excellent beds. The bathroom seemed to be newly renovated. The location was easy walking distance to nearby resturants and fast food. There was a huge mall called Arizona Mills next door to the hotel as well. The hotel had free wifi and the hot breakfast was excellent---especially the pancake machine! The breakfast area in the lobby was an excellent spot to meet up with family. I would definitely stay with here again! read more

This hotel is a-ok. I consider this one of the better Holiday Inns. The rooms are very spacious although a little dated. The hotel is very clean which is always a plus. They serve breakfast each morning which includes some hot selections like bacon and eggs and cold selections like yogurt and cereal. The staff here are very friendly and helpful. Each room is a suite style with a microwave and mini wet bar with a refrigerator. The TV is a larger LCD type. The beds could be a little more confortable and I think the pillows suck. I didn't have high expectations for this location, but as an IHG gal, this was the best choice in the area I had to be in for work. It's right off two highways, which is good for convenience but allowed me to hear all the traffic throughout the night. I had to turn my AC fan on to drown out the sound. I had the executive king bed room, which was really spacious. The shower had good water pressure and temperature at 7:30am. The sink area is pretty well lit (for the ladies who need their makeup looking flawless). The bed was comfortable, but I wish the comforter was fluffier. The decor is the older-style HIE, and I hope they get to revamp the decor and trimmings soon to match the newer locations. Staff have all been great. I didn't eat the breakfast, but simply grabbed a banana. The computer in the business center couldn't print PDFs, so that was a let down. I hope they get that figured out. The Arizona Mills mall next door was lame. It was dank, full of middle schoolers that probably should've been at school?, and overpriced for what it is (an outlet mall). I'd rather drive to Biltmore for what I need. At the end of the day, I'll try a different IHG location next time. There were just too many cons for me. read more

We reserved a room at this location for 2 nights. Upon check-in we were advised by the GM, due to recent guest causing damage to their rooms, a new policy was in place that a $200 security deposit would be held on our credit card until check-out. I was asked if that was OK. I stated I did not agree because I was not informed of such a policy at the time I made my reservation and that I had never caused damage to any hotel room. In addition, I was a Holiday Inn rewards member for years and she could check this out. After a discussion, the GM continued with that was how it was going to be and apparently, I might be better off if I went to another place. I could not believe my ears. My husband and I do not look like any individuals who would cause major damage to anything. We are clean, neat and senior citizens. I imagine college students had previously caused damage. We should not have been singled out without prior notice of such an arbitrary policy which she also informed me was the hotels "prerogative". She again invited me to accept the policy or not check-in. I would have not checked in after her rudeness, negative manner and unbending policy but I was attending my grandchild's graduation and already was aware that lodging in the area was very limited due to the numerous graduations. I felt I was forced to accept the policy or find myself without a room. I would like to point out that no other individual's (whom I spoke with - were charged this outrageous security fee). Of course, we created no damage and the security deposit was refunded. This experience has made me determine I will NEVER stay at a Holiday Inn again. I have the ability and resources to patronize any hotel chain and certainly will never forget this. read more

The room internet Wi-Fi was extremely slow, thus making work difficult. The rooms were okay, but the in the room coffee was not refilled, carpets were dirty. This is my new go-to staycation spot in the Valley. My fiance and I live with our extended family in Glendale, and sometimes we need to get away for the weekend. This weekend in particular was Valentine's Day as well as our anniversary. We had originally booked a hotel downtown, but upon arrival they told us they do not rent to locals (and were VERY rude about it. This is the Airport Econo Lodge by the way - avoid it like the plague). After two hours of scrambling around trying to get a new reservation on a weekend where literally everything was booked, we wound up at the Holiday Inn Express in Tempe. I cannot express in enough words for this review my gratitude to Jacquelyn and Aaron for their help accommodating us. We arrived at 7pm on a very busy Saturday. The first thing they told us was that they had no space available, and didn't know how we were able to make a reservation on Hotels.com. They apologized, gave us complimentary chocolate-covered strawberries, cookies, and water, and they let us use the computer room to try and book something else. All we were finding on the Internet were rooms in Scottsdale (blech!), when suddenly Jacquelyn came in and said she had a room for us after all! So here we are in this wonderful King size room with lots of sitting space, a big TV, a fridge big enough for all our beer and soda, a nice large shower, and the softest sheets and pillows. We're a short walk from Arizona Mills and a ten minute drive to downtown. I'm very pleased. In the future I'll bypass booking websites altogether and just book directly with this place. read more

Stayed here while in town for the Night Nation 5K. It's conveniently located by restaurants and a mall. Perfect place for our weekend getaway. The hotel is nice, clean and the staff was very friendly. We checked in pretty late Friday night and Jaque was a total sweetheart. There was a hiccup on our reservation and it was handled the next morning by the hotel manager Jason. He also sent up a little treat bag of waters, cookies and fruit. Alan at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites absolutely SAVED us a couple weeks ago. My husband and I booked a different hotel nearby for one night for a layover in Phoenix. The other hotel was so gross we walked out.... The Holiday Inn was just a block or two away and they gave us their last room for the night. Now I realize Alan has very little to do with room availability, but he was so friendly and courteous that he really turned around what had begun as a bad day. Every time we walked through the lobby he made sure our room was up to our expectations, he offered to help us find a cab to take to the airport the following morning, he suggested a place to eat where his referral earned us a free appetizer, and he was overall very pleasant. Because of Alan, we joined the IHG club and will be staying with their hotels from here on out. No more Hotels.com for us - that's how we ended up in a bind in the first place. read more

My husband and I visit Tempe each year during the Angels Spring Training sessions with our family. We usually try to find modest hotels since we like to splurge on great eating and a good time at the games. ( and more beer money- haha) This year we decided to Stay at the Holiday Inn & Suites. We chose this hotel for the close location to the field & also because it was close to dining and shopping ( Basically in the parking lot of the Arizona Mills Mall ). ** Keep in Mind this is not a four or Five Star Hotel ** Location Pros: Great location. Very close to the freeways and there were plenty of places to eat within 5 to 10 mile radius. There was always parking in the hotel parking lot and no charge. Also, the Mall wasn't half bad for an outlet mall ( quite crowded on Sunday's). It's not far from the famous Mill Ave with lots of bars, if you are there to have a few beers... Location Cons: The only thing that worried me a bit was a bus stop located right next to the low rise wall where cars were parked. There were many people just hanging out on the wall and it made me a bit uneasy. Thankfully, all was well. ( Also, while the hotel is located in a nicer area, it is only a few miles away from the town of Guadalupe which I don't recommend going). Hotel Pros: The staff greeted us with friendly faces and were quite professional. The staff was extremely friendly and answered all of our questions when we called down to the front desk. The suite was generally spacious and although the full beds were a bit small, it still accommodated us nicely. It included a refrigerator , microwave and two complimentary waters each day. There was also Tea and Coffee included in the room at no additional charge. The hotel hospitality staff thoroughly cleaned our room ( and we had two kids with us ). They replaced our towels and toiletries each day. We we were there for 4 days and three nights. The " Continental" Breakfast they provide is beyond what you may expect. They offer so much including biscuits and gravy as well as healthy options. It actually exceeded my expectations for the Holiday Inn. Hotel Cons: Now before I get to the cons, keep in mind again, this is not a five star hotel so you can't expect too much. The bathroom: Very small, so small that the door will hit you if someone else opened it while you were in it. I would have much rather have the sink and shower in once place. The sink is located outside the bathroom in the actual room. Or, they could even take out the dining area to open up the bathroom. ( Just my opinion ) Also, the plumbing is not the greatest either. We had to call for a plunger and use it several times. ( we also saw another guest with a plunger as well ). There was also a funny smell in the hotel, but I can't really cal this con because I am just sensitive to hotel smells. The Pool: It okay for us since it was not quite summer so it wasn't too crowded and we only had two kids with us. However, if you plan on staying here over the summer be prepared for the crowd since it is small. Also, they should not allow children in the Hot tub even with a parent. A few kids were splashing around in there making it hard for others to relax. Overall I give this place 3 stars, simply because it was pretty much how I expected it to be. This is a former Amerisuites, so rooms are very spacious and comfortable. The bed is comfortable. Television is newer LCD / HD (and very large) but other furniture in the room needs to be replaced. The desk chair, for example, does not raise high enough to actually use it to get any work done. Power outlets are all below furniture so you have to crawl on the floor to plug in most devices (the kitchenette has a countertop outlet). The air conditioner cycles on and off. It isn't loud when it does, but if you like a little white noise when you sleep, there is no way to keep the fan on full time. Breakfast was ok - HoEx standard. Easy walk to the mall with all of its associated attractions and dining options. read more

At first walking into the hotel, it looks nice, modern looking. Didn't get a welcome greeting when I walked in. Stood at the desk while two associates discussed something. I get checked in and headed to my room. Walked in my room and it was stuffy. Every hotel I ever walked into the room's AC is on, even in the Holiday Inn that I stayed in Idaho Falls just for the last three nights before coming to Tempe. Next, the cable box is resting and balancing on top of the flatscreen TV on the wall! Wires sticking up through the top and side. How tacky! In the bathroom, the sink faucet is totally loose! I can shake and wiggle the whole thing! Not even anchored down. And when you turn on the water....they got hot on the cold side and cold on the hot side. C'mon, really? Only the bar sink is solid and connected correctly. Other than the above, the AM breakfast was good and fresh as yer gonna get. Overall I was not thrilled with my stay here in Tempe. The one in Idaho Falls was far better than this one. read more
