I used to love the snack bar. Came here every summer. I came in tonight for a piece of cake w my daughter- yellow cake w chocolate frosting. The cake was dry and the icing flakes and fell off when you touched it w a fork. WTF? Icing should melt into your fork as you cut the cake, not flake off like dandruff. The cake was $7.50 which I wouldn't mind paying if it were fresh and delicious. Then I pay with $20 cash and receive $12 in change. Again, WTF?!?! You don't have correct change and you short change the customer? And you want me to sign a petition to keep you open? I think not. read more

When i went back and shared with the owner that it had been an hour and 15 minutes to get the last burger now headed home to eat cold food she told me 'it happens' I'm eating at Barrys where food and mgt is better. This was absolutely a fantastic culinary experience! This restaurant is sort of off the beaten path. In other words, you really have to look to find this place and it's really worth looking for! I have to say that the waitress, Vanessa, was extremely helpful. She was very friendly. She made great suggestions. And she was extremely kind throughout the entire dining experience. We ordered simple meals. I ordered a cheeseburger, split pea soup, and french fries. The hamburger was delicious. You could tell that the meat used was real ground beef that was pressed early in the morning and just waiting for us to arrive. I could go on and on about how fantastic my experience was eating here however I just want to say if you want to have a really fine dining experience, at an out-of-the-way place, with a real rustic atmosphere, where you can eat outside, come here to the Holiday Snack Bar. Went to the Holiday Snack Bar for breakfast, our second time in two days, this morning. Once again the food was stellar! Menu items we had on our two visits included: Loco Moco, Bud's Creamed Dried Beef, Quiche, The Classic, Lala's Pineapple Bread Pudding and a Blueberry Scone, all of these menu items were exceptional! Their breakfast and lunch fare are both unique and delicious! Owners Eileen and Brian Bowker truly make you feel like family as does their amazing staff! I agree with another reviewer who commented that people needed to calm down and take a deep breath before awarding Holiday snack bar 5 stars. LBI is a place filled with fond childhood memories and nostalgia and I think that a lot of people voted with their heart and not their taste buds. I've been vacationing in LBI for about 10 years and we've been to Holiday snack bar twice. My husband hates it but here is my objective opinion. 1. Circular counter style & stool seating. No air conditioning. Very casual, tshirts and flip flops. We waited approx 20 minutes for available seats. 2. Burgers were good but my son commented that they are about the size of a McDonalds burgers. French fries were super crispy and hot. 3. We tried 3 desserts: Warm Apple crisp with vanilla ice cream was fantastic!! Blueberry pie... Homemade, crust was buttery flaky, filling not cloyingly sweet. Very good pie! Chocolate cake with vanilla frosting. Cake was a little dry, frosting was a seven minute/ meringue frosting, not buttercream. Good, not great Service was friendly and welcoming. Prices were very reasonable. I would def go again for the homemade desserts... You could almost tell they were made with love. read more

Been going here my whole life, and my mom and aunt have been since they were young too (my aunt even worked there as a teenager in the 60's). Thankfully it hasn't changed too much. The interior is still the way it always has been and is so charming and casual. Staring at the cakes in the middle is the best part. The menu has also remained mostly the same - which is a good thing!! The side salad with thru blue cheese dressing is always incredible- crunchy lettuce, hard boiled egg, and the best blue cheese dressing ever. The burgers are tiny and classic-amazing. The blts are crunchy and perfect every time. The milkshakes are thin- which is how we like them, you can actually drink them! And the cakes and pies are always the best. The lady lord, the chocolate cake with white icing, or any cake w their chocolate icing are all family faves! We come back every year. I could swim in their signature sweet and sour burger sauce!! This place does a very limited number of things, and they do those few things very well. Great burgers fried on a flat top (if ya like them like that) very good pies and cakes nice salads and some soups and sandwiches. Thats it. The last time we were there we were seated right by the station where the burger guy works, so we watched him grilling the buns and burgers as we waited for our turn to come up. There were some surfing magazines around and I picked one up and pointed out a truly...I believe 30 years ago, the term was gnarly shot of a guy surfing in a tube and commented to my wife how cool that experience must be. The guy was a surfer and commented that surfing is all there is to do all winter...and we were off on a 30 minute conversation about LBI over the years. In the interim we ate our delicious burgers fries and a slice of chocolate cake for my wife and lemon meringue pie for me. Went with Mom yesterday for lunch. She's 75 and been ordering the same thing there since she was a teenager in the 50s. It's not that any one thing is the best you've had, it's just the nostalgia and the ageless wisdom of STICKING WITH A FORMULA THAT WORKS (for generations) that makes it great. As we ate, a group of six girls aged 12-14 years came in, split three fries and had sodas. In a few years, they'll stop in with a boy they're keen on for a milkshake and a piece of pie. In 20 years, they'll bring back their husband and their young kids. It's the circle of life at the circular counter at the place we call HSB. And, it's exactly what we saw yesterday. Just found this place by chance, driving back to our rental after a night at Fantasy Island. After reading the "homemade snacks" sign, we planned to go for lunch the next day - the day of our departure, sadly. We wished we had found it sooner. Looking around, everyone looked content eating burgers, nibbling on a homemade "chipwich" which I believe is 2 giant chocolate chip cookies with 2 scoops of ice cream in the middle....WOW. You could see in the center of the joint, the mile-high cakes and assorted desserts on display under cake domes. First things, first...Must order lunch. We ordered the grilled cheese and bacon along with the grilled cheese and ham for our kids. My husband and I ordered the slam burger and a chicken sandwich with pickles and slaw to share. When the food arrived shortly after placing our order we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the baked ham on the grilled cheese sandwich. The bacon was crispy and delicious. Our sandwiches were easy to cut in half to share and equally delicious, and vastly different from each other, expectedly. The crispy chicken and crunchy slaw on a soft bun was soooo good. The slam burger was yummy too. We couldn't wait to move on to dessert. We ordered a black & white shake and a slice of chocolate marshmallow cake and we were stunned at how tasty and homemade it actually was. This little shack has been around since 1948, and I'm really jealous of reviewers like Amy T, Wes D and Rick H who have been here every summer since they were kids. I am in love with the bar that encloses the entire place with a perfect view of the cakes and pies. I love that there are a limited amount of items on the menu, and that they are pretty much guaranteed to taste great. And I love the airy feel of the place despite the fact that they sling grease all day long. I had the Slam burger; the choice to go that route was obvious. A fried onion ring and thousand island on a cheeseburger? Yes, please!! I ordered the regular crispy fries, because I must be one of like four people on Earth who does not like Old Bay seasoning. But they do have it,and they have cheese fries. AND Old Bay cheese fries. ordered a vanilla coke, because I always order a vanilla coke when I go to old-fashioned diners like this one. I sat there during my second vanilla coke and realized I was basically asking for more sugar in my drink that was overly sugary in the first place...
