The cupcakes here look much better than they taste, unfortunately. The red velvet is not cream cheese frosting, for one. If it has any cream cheese at all in it, you cannot taste it. The white buttercream frosting is tasteless. I also ordered the almond raspberry cupcake, vanilla/vanilla with bavarian cream filling, and same filling for a chocolate/chocolate cupcake. I was given the wrong cupcake for the chocolate one because it was not filled. Frosting was better than the vanilla but I still not did not finish it. The almond cake with raspberry filling was good without the frosting. I threw everything else away. We sent a picture of a Nightmare before Christmas baby shower cake. They duplicated it exactly like the picture..I couldn't believe what a perfect replica. It was a yellow cake on the bottom that was moist and tasty. The fondant was not too much and tasted good. The top layer was chocolate but we cannot comment on that because the mom to be, took it home to 'celebrate' with immediate family the day the baby comes home. Not overly remarkable cake. It was dry, the filling was t great. We ordered a cake with strawberry filling and I expected some sort of homemade strawberry filling but it was like the strawberry gel stuff you get out of a bag. Like what you can get at the grocery store for strawberry shortcake. It also was only in the center of the cake, so we missed cut in an entire row of cake before we hit filling. The other cake we ordered was supposed to be chocolate but when we cut into it the cake was almond flavor. Again the flavoring inside was only in the very center (chocolate Bavarian cream) and was absolutely flavorless. The frosting is decent, but a complaint I have is that they like to put the colored sugar on almost EVERY cupcake and I personally hate the sugar and would prefer not to have it on my cupcake at all. The pricing is TOO expensive! Their other treats are too expensive as well. I have tried a dozen of their different flavors and wish they would offer their flavors without the sugar too. You think you have something ordered to find out days later, they can not fill your order and NO one gets back to you. Then proceeded to blame us for not getting a hold of them . We were hoping for baked goods for breakfast, but they don't have those types of baked goods. They have cookies, cupcakes, and cakes. We tried half a dozen and they were delicious. We had the chocolate raspberry, caramel apple, pumpkin, almond, red velvet, and cappuccino. Our favorite was the chocolate raspberry. Cupcake prices vary as they have different sizes from mini, regular, and jumbo. I've had two very pleasant experiences with Holland Cakery and I'm very surprised to see negative reviews here! I'm new to the area and after living in Chicago for a decade I'm pretty used to great bakeries and cupcakeries. The first order I placed here was for my father-in-law's birthday cake. I ordered over the phone and it was easy as pie. I wanted something rather specific and they were happy to accommodate me. I picked up the cake at the agreed upon time and it was beautiful! My son and I also grabbed some cupcakes to enjoy at home and they were delicious - red velvet and a vanilla M&M. The cake itself was great; moist, flavorful, everything you want in a cake. And this after I mistakenly refrigerated it for a day! I just placed my second order for my father's birthday cake and ordering was again an easy experience. The woman I spoke to was kind and helpful. She was thankful that we ordered in advance, so I'm wondering if some of these negative reviews might be from people who aren't giving enough advance on their order... A busy bakery usually needs at least a week or two to fulfill custom orders. I ordered an almond cake with mocha whipped cream filling & frosting & a dark chocolate ganache. This is a Dutch mokka gebak which is my mother's favorite cake/pastry. My mom & aunts all said this was very close to what they would get in The Netherlands. Everyone enjoyed the cake. The entire process dealing with Katy was pleasant & positive. My husband and I ordered our wedding cake from Holland Cakery 'N' Sweets and were very happy with how the cake turned out. We sampled cakes from multiple bakeries in the Grand Rapids and Holland area and they were our favorite by far. We worked with Katy Jo and she was not phased by any of the pictures that I brought in from Pinterest. She was able to create exactly what we wanted and we weren't charged extra for having each cake tier a different flavor. We selected pink champagne with raspberry, almond with buttercream, and chocolate lovers with bavarian filling. I was concerned about how the cake would taste since they make it a couple of days beforehand but the flavors were amazing and the cake remained moist. However, today when I called in to order I was greeted and assisted by the rudest person I have ever encountered in my life. After I politely asked to order some cupcakes, she told me that they were too busy to help me. My intent is to give constructive feedback on the cupcakes. We tried the almond cupcake with raspberry filling and Salted Carmel Vanilla cupcake. The almond cake itself was good...the frosting though, had no flavor. I personally don't like the candy sprinkles either. It robs the flavor from the raspberry filling. The frosting on the Salted Carmel cupcake was way too dense for the cake and it left a waxy aftertaste as if it was heavy on the oil instead of butter. Also Carmel filling made the cake too moist which gave the cupcake no texture contrast to the heavy frosting and drizzle of Carmel on top. Wow! Expensive deserts. The small cake for $25 was just ok. Nothing remarkable for the price. We also got two cupcakes. A grasshopper and a raspberry filled cupcake (can't remember the exact name) the grasshopper mint was really bad it tasted like mint extract. The raspberry filled had good flavor, but the filling was barely there and comical. The cupcakes are $3 at least a piece. I would also be interested in seeing an ingredient list.
