When we got…read morethere, we were informed the restaurant had closed 3 years ago, but the former president of the country club, Al Harker, gave us suggestions of other nearby restaurants. Then, he chatted us up and suggested we try a free 18 holes of golf and think about joining the country club. Mr. Harker is a great pitchman. We took him up on his offer and came the next weekend and played 18 holes. We were sold by the 5th hole. The first few holes are gorgeous, as they are on a peninsula surrounded by Lake Shafer and expensive homes. The last 9 holes are long, across the street and also fun to play. This is the nicest golf course in Monticello, and I imagine in and around this area. The membership for people under 40 is only $450.00. When you play, it's only $8 for 9 holes or $16.00 for 18 holes with a golf cart. When the kids at the clubhouse see your car approach, they bring a golf cart to you. Now that's service. The PGA pro, Jim, runs the golf shop and gives lessons. He's also very, very nice. The bartender, Angel, is friendly and will tell you lots of interesting things going on in and around town. We've had our vacation home for 3.5 years, and sadly, we've found the locals in Monticello to be less than friendly, and our neighbors have got to be the most suspicious, unfriendly folks around, but the members at this country club are very welcoming and wave when they see you. The minus one star is for the fact that the country club has no permanent restaurant. The Riverside Restaurant grills from Wednesday to Saturday from 11:00 am to 2:00 p.m, and the country clubs offers hot dogs, brats and some fried appetizers. The shop sells soda, candy bars, jerky and potato chips. My biggest gripe though is how gross the bathrooms on the course are. No one has ever cleaned them in years so they are completely unusable, especially for women.

The waitress was average, could have been better, took a little longer then we thought to bring us our drinks ( which mine was completely wrong) and appetizers. The busboy on the other hand was horrible. He came out with our food ( which took about an hour) and ended up giving it to the wrong table. My husband tried to tell him that was our food but he completely ignored my husband and took part of our meal back to the kitchen. At this point we decided not to wait another hour for our dinner, paid for what we actually received and decided we will never return. If you are looking for a relaxing dinner without any hiccups and not too long of a wait I wouldn't recommend this place. A few places I would recommend, Oak & Barrel, Riverside Restaurant & Lounge and Anglers Restaurant, we have never had an issue.

Oh, except after I first got there and told this verbally, I magically received a text at 7:42 that it would be holiday rates! I asked about any kind of discount or break on the price and was told emphatically nothing they could do! And I called other golf courses around and no one else seems to be charging holiday rates. Golf carts are electric, but have way too many ads appearing on the GPS screen. Annoying. Green fees are fair and they offer a small senior discount during the week. Restaurant: Food is really very good. Service varies from good to slow, depending on the size of the crowd. Breakfasts are excellent. The bar, unfortunately, only carries 2 brands of scotch, neither of which is very good. But they do have a large variety of beers, and other drinks. Accommodations: This is where I was extremely disappointed. The cottage (Cottage C) claimed to have 2 queen beds in each of the 4 rooms. That's quite an exaggeration, if not an outright lie. The beds are singles (and small singles, at that). Very uncomfortable sleeping conditions. If you can get the cottage with the king bed, do so, otherwise, skip the trip.

I was not sure what to expect from the exterior of the building. Honestly the sign above the door…read morelooks like a tarp that is just hung up there (it is an actual permanent sign) so I would suggest some other color and variations if they decide to redo this. When you walk in, it takes just a second for your eyes to adjust as the whole place is dark and lit by blacklights. As you enter the door, you are greeted with a few arcade game machines. The mini golf course is towards the back and was relatively reasonable for pricing. It was $26.00 for three adults to play a round. The course was decent with many right angle banking and some shots where you need to hit it into an obstacle. There is no elevation to the holes unless it is a ramp so the holes are almost all flat. The final hole is a large clown face where you hit the ball into his mouth. The arcade consisted of quite a few games to play: skee ball, crane games, deal or no deal, a big wheel to spin and a few other fan favorites as well. The games cost anywhere from $1.10 to $1.75 for a play so it isn't completely outrageous. There were 't too many options to choose from at the arcade redemption center so I would suggest expanding more items here for people to earn. This is a fun place to spend a couple hours with the kids or a fun date. They even have birthday packages available for children with a designated room.
