Holly Recreation Area is a great place to go camping but only if you do your research first! This is why I am writing this review. Absolutely do not camp in the Maple or Oak loops unless you don't mind having no privacy whatsoever. I recommend Trillium or Hickory loops but if you reserve your space early enough you should definitely shoot for the Hickory loop spot numbers 134, 135, or 136. These spots are heavily wooded and secluded and not easy to find in a Michigan State Park when you want to go car camping. This campground does have a lot of mosquitos and raccoons, but nothing more than what you would expect when you go camping. There is no swimming within walking distance but you can take a 5 minute drive to Heron Lake which is awesome. The campground also has a lot of trails for hiking and mountain biking.

Nature at its best! Holly Rec Area is a great retreat for every day, but truly, this place has a little bit of everything for every visitor. We came here with some friends a while ago to BBQ and relax on the beach. The weather was gorgeous that day, and everybody was out, and there were plenty of grills available. We saw plenty of families enjoying the water, and eating to their hearts content. Parking is plentiful, but if you do not have a parks pass, you will need to pay $5 at the entrance. It's totally worth it though. I love that this place has hiking trails, campgrounds, a lovely beach, and just lots of places to roam freely. It covers such a large area that you could easily get lost, so don't travel alone! Overall, I loved our time spent here, and feel fortunate enough to have this relatively close to home. Definitely a must to check out if you're in the Holly/Clarkston area. :)

The beach area on the lake is really fun! The campgrounds are fun to bike around with the hills. The bathrooms are nice too.

The sites do not have any type of lane which causes the lots to be soggy and muddy. I had to put my F250 into 4L to keep it from getting stuck while parking the camper. The lot was so filled with tire tracks and mud that our dogs and children would not be able to walk outside. My friend who was 8-months pregnant almost fell multiple times. We tested the water prior to hooking it up to the camper and it came out brown. The final straw was when we lost power between our 2 campers for the 5th time in 1 hour. The staff could not provide any resolutions to these issues. We did not receive the sites that we had booked: poor grounds, unsanitary water and electricity below the necessary 30 amps. I've called the campground at least 10 times, emailed once and called KOA's corporate number twice asking for a response and have never received a call back. We filed a dispute with Chase bank and the campground responded after 40 days stating that we did not meet the cancellation policy. How could we meet this policy when we wanted to stay there but could not due to the conditions of the site. I hope this review will at least save some future travelers time and energy by booking ANYWHERE else.

Lots of, possibly the majority of, people here are on seasonal sites, and some make these these quite homey, with screened porches, hedges, light displays and statuary. Campers are packed pretty tightly together, but if you came here you probably weren't looking for solitude. Though there were a lot of people here, it was quiet overall. The owners were very pleasant and helpful. Other campers were pretty friendly too. The firewood we got was dry and easy to burn. We appreciated the cleanliness. The grounds were well maintained, and bathrooms and showers were kept very clean. Plenty of hot water in the showers, though water pressure gets weak if more than one person is showering at the same time. If you don't feel like walking all the way to the modern bathhouse, there are outhouses scattered through the campground, though I'd recommend just walking to the bathhouse. Rockey's is situated on a chain of small lakes, and there are some decent fish to be found in these. There's a concrete boat launch, as well as fishing boats and canoes for rent. When I was unloading my kayak by the boat launch, one of the owners said it was no problem for me to leave it on the lawn by the launch, and that I could safely leave all my gear by it with no worries. He as right. We were tent camping, which I think few people do there, and this did present some inconveniences. Some of the sites have few trees...like ours, and a little protection from the sun would have been nice. A lack of trees also left us with no place to string up our clothesline. There are streetlights along the campground lanes, which are handy for walking to the bathhouse after dark, but make your tent very bright at night. Rockey's doesn't cater to tenters, but some do come there, and for them it will be less than ideal. But for others it should be more than satisfactory,

It's local and I always used it to iron out any kinks that may arise throughout the season before I go camping elsewhere farther away. They haven't had a lot to offer in terms of recreation for a long time, but I still enjoyed the simple atmosphere and ability to camp 'rustic' if that was my goal for the weekend. For many years the price was excellent, but the past couple of years the price has gone up ridiculously. I will not spend $50+ per night for a campsite at a campground that has so little to offer. Especially when you can go to bigger campgrounds that have more to do for less. It MIGHT be that I live so close by that there's not even anything interesting to see AROUND the campground, as where other cities may have some sites I'd be interested in seeing or places to go. But, for a campground like Cottonwood, with nothing to offer IN the campground, I don't see why anyone would pay that much when there's absolutely NOTHING interesting for people to see within 50 miles of the place. For being the state capital, Lansing is basically nothing but ghetto anymore. Even Detroit has better things to do!

I loved our back-in spot that was on the pond. My golden retriever wasted no time in jumping into the big pond and started swimming. She loved it! Since we were at one of the pond spots, the pool, playground, and bathroom were very close by. The playground can use some updating, but that's not a big deal. The pool and deck area were clean. The kids were having fun and that's fine by me also. The bath house was recently updated. It was very clean and updated. Shower area was clean also, I was never worried about seeing random bugs or giant gross puddles. It's very well kept. The dogs and I took a few walks while we were there. If you go past the baseball fields, you get to the back section of the campground, more suited for tent camping. Those sites were very well-covered by the trees. That walk was very pleasant. The campground was super close to MSU campus, so that was a plus also. One minute you're on campus, the next minute you're in the country. We went around mid June and that Cottonwood was no joke. The campground certainly lived up to its name. It was basically a Cottonwood blizzard. Thank goodness I'm not allergic, but that may be a consideration for some. Like someone else said on their review, the fire pit wasn't a fire pit, it was a basically a huge divot in the ground that you can easily trip on because it's so shallow. We didn't use it because we didn't have time, but it's technically not false advertising because they didn't say "fire ring" as the amenity. Overall, we had a great experience and looking forward to coming back if we're ever back in the Lansing area.

They do not want seasonal campers anymore. No more new seasonal campers as they leave. The pool has been down the last 3 times we have been there. The bathrooms are a mess. My wife got her phone stolen last year. They have more golf carts than they know what to do with but won't rent them for some reason. I was out on a wait list for a cart this weekend and watched about 50 carts sit unrented. In the office and store we made note of a substance on the toilets in the restroom (you know what I mean), it remained there from when we checked in this last Thursday until this morning (Sunday). Speaking with other campers, they are sad that they see so many empty spaces. It's ridiculous how many vacancies they have now. Some left before the completion for their reservation because they were so unhappy with what's happening. We used to hold trips here with the people we work with at least twice a year. I wish them the best of luck because they are going to need it. I think the staff knows what needs to be done but the corporate ownership is driving this place into the ground. Oh and bring life jackets for the kids to use their water activities on the lake. They don't even have enough life jackets for what little campers they had. I think this might me a violation.

We used to camp here at least once a year for the past 6 years now. I can see why there were so many sites open now. Corporate greed has taken yet another nice campground down. We won't be back.
