I feel like this facility just calls it "dog training" The owner did not listen to my concerns, and just kept saying that she taught my dog to walk on a leash. I didn't need help walking my dog on a leash. When I went to pick my dog up, she gave me a different dog bed then I brought her in with. Then she said, oh, I guess her bed must be in the wash. So she had some random uncomfortable bed. The owner said she would bring it to me, never got that back. She also said she would do training at our home, and never followed up. Unfortunately my dog and I did not have a great experience here. My dog stayed for a 2 week training session and was rarely allowed to interact with any dogs. I believe she was kept in the kennel most of the time as I was not given many updates during her training or any pictures of her in the yard. Upon pick up I was told how stubborn my dog is. Which made me realize that Diana was frustrated with my dog throughout the entire 2 weeks instead of dedicating the time and patience my dog may have needed. A true trainer would recognize a dog needs over their personal opinions in order to do their job professionally and successfully. I was supposed to receive additional training classes with my dog included in my payment after the two week program and was told someone would reach out. They never followed up and didn't seem to care much. I know they are very busy with doggy day care and various training sessions/boarding and don't believe my dog received the individual attention required to have a successful training. I would recommend looking into other companies that can devote more time to their clients and give a more personal approach to training. read more

Do not board your babies at Hollywood Dog Training. Guillotine door meets beautiful tail in mid-June. Amputation. At one point Rick Karl, owner of Hollywood Dog Training, admitted they didn't realize Duke was injured and left him untreated and bleeding for what could have been hours. They also admitted they still haven't examined the doors. Despite being told that Duke was being monitored 24/7 during his recovery, I learned they were putting Duke in the SAME kennels. His staff circumvented the veterinarian, and wrapped Duke's tail themselves, possibly causing further injury and pain. Now Karl refuses to pay for aftercare. Duke's symptoms: "hot spots" due to duress, nightmares, separation anxiety, weight loss and more. Karl was harassing me by phone that afternoon/early evening calling me "unreasonable", and I had to threaten him with the police to get him to stop. If he cared for animals and their owners at all he would have made sure Duke was safe and certainly completely healthy regardless of the cost. (And not to mention this is after years of being a client, and thousands of dollars in boarding fees). It was Karl's negligence that caused the damage to Duke's tail and beyond. read more

Since we adopted Sally (a 5 year old boxer mix), we struggled with containing her intermittent high energy which was intimidating to our three children and guests. While Sally has a very sweet and eager to please demeanor, we lacked the tools to communicate with her in an effective manner. After a year of frustration, we decided to try the four week on-leash training. We are so glad we did! We visited Sally two weeks into her training and observed tremendous growth! Aside from the training skills she was beginning to master, her physical health was noticeably improved. She had trimmed down to a healthy weight and had regrown hair that had become thin and patchy on her backside (a condition that we had unsuccessfully attempted to treat medically). I participated in five 45 minute training sessions with Sally's wonderful trainers David and Rick. I learned how to communicate effectively with Sally. She was brought home for one final reintroduction training session and has since made a smooth transition. We are more in love with our Sally than ever before! Our Sheepadoodle began training with Rick around the 5-6 month mark for basic on-leash training, and now having reached the 1 year milestone she has retained the training provided by Rick and continues to excel. Our pups are not just pets, but members of our family. That being said, it was important to us that she had the best, most effective training possible. Words cannot describe how amazing my experience was with Rick! I brought my five month old, Old English Sheepdog Puppy for 1 month one-on-one training with Rick, it was one of the best investments I've ever made! Apollo (my Old English Sheepdog) is going to be a big dog (approx 100+ pounds) so It was important to me to invest in professional dog training so I can have: 1) an excellent relationship with my dog, 2) the knowledge of how to handle my dog, and 3) a dog that everyone feels happy and comfortable to be around. Dear Rick (owner), I am sad to say that I will no longer be bringing my dog here for boarding nor will I ever recommend this place to others. The LACK OF genuine, heartfelt CUSTOMER SERVICE is the reason I will be taking my dog elsewhere. I brought my dog for a 4 day stay and a bath on pickup day. My dog had on a Seresto flea collar ($45). I "specifically" told the guy on drop-off day that this was a flea collar and it is "waterproof" and doesn't need to be removed. He said that it was fine and that it's not a problem and left it on. On pick-up day, after I got in the car and left, I realized that the collar was gone. I called them back and asked about it. I was also in the area so I returned right back to inquire about it. I was met with disingenuous apologies which basically implied "I'm sorry this happened to you but it's not our problem", "we remove all collars when they stay with us". The guy from the back returns with a chewed up collar and hands it to me. Saying, "I guess the other dog chewed it up". The lady (Lori or Laura) at the front points to the a sign on the wall that says they're not responsible for damaged items and gives me another one of her disingenuous "I'm sorry but this is not our problem" replies. I GET THAT!!! But if they had just left the collar on during the bath this wouldn't have happened. Or better yet....just tell me that I HAVE to remove it at drop-off and I will....not a big deal! BUT when you take the dog from me, knowing the information I just gave you about the collar, and tell me that it's NOT A PROBLEM, you have now taken the situation out of my hands, and taken responsibility for it. I have over 20 years of customer service and this is not how to treat or salvage a relationship with your loyal customers. Nor should the staff be so short sighted with a customer who returns to your business time and again. This kind of smug, I couldn't care less about your situation attitude, is truly upsetting and frustrating. $45 is what they make on one dog Per day, but it means a little more to the little guy. We boarded 2 dogs for 4 days and dropped $300 dollars here (and it's not the first time either), Yet no offer to remedy the situation in a any shape or form. OK is my thought...staff is never happy. I know the trainers are good here, however pricing, to me, sucks! I brought MY OWN food to use and they charged me for "special feeding"...no - I just don't want my dog to come home with liquid shits on account I had to use your food. Also, wouldn't it save THEM money by not using their food...? I boarded two dogs, each being $24.50, for two nights. I ended up paying over $200 with fees and bullsh*t...should have been $100-$150 total. We took Miss Boots, our 2 year old rescue Pittbull, to their with the intention of getting her trained and "dialed in" so we could enjoy having a dog. We could not have asked for a better turnout and end result. We took Miss Boots to HDTS specifically to help with "human aggression" (not towards us but potential new people) and to learn the essential commands. Rick (the owner) and Diana (our trainer) were absolutely amazing during the process. Unfortunately, Miss Boots was a bit of a challenge as she is an "alpha" female + a Pit from the streets (that was very beat up when we found her) + not a young dog. They worked with her for about 2 months, which was longer than initially expected. We feel most places would have just given her back as an "incomplete dog", however they kept and trained her until she was ready. They truly, genuinely care about the dogs and giving the right service. As a fellow business owner and someone who cares deeply about their pet I appreciate this rare quality in a business. The final weekend she was there, we worked 1 on 1 with Rick and Diana to learn the commands and "how to dance with her" as they put it. We had to re-wire our habits too. They made it very easy to understand and really worked hard to make sure we knew how to utilize the commands and techniques correctly. Our first week at home with her has been an adjustment as we have had to be very diligent about keeping up with 20-30 min of training a day and continue with the wonderful foundation she now has. This isn't easy for 2 people who work nearly 80 hours a week but the results have been immediately apparent. Walks with her are fun! Even training her is fun...because she actually listens!! And the best part is that we know it will only get better and easier as we get more comfortable with "the dance". Overall we could not be happier. This is a dog that we didn't know if we could keep if she didn't change. Now, she is better behaved than 99% of the dogs we see out there. EVERY dog owner needs to check this place out and get an idea how much better your life can be with a well trained dog; not a dog that listens to a command once in a while but one that truly listens and respects you as an owner. I heard about this place fom a complete stranger. For weeks I saw a man and his German shephard at the park, leashless. This dog has the sweetest temperament and kept his eyes on his owner a lot. They had the greatest partnership. The man would sit, lean against a tree and read. The dog would lay down next to him enjoying the sights and sounds, but not barking at other dogs who walked right by him. Finally I asked him how he trained his dog so well. He smiled and said he took his dog to the Hollywood Dog Training School. My husband and I were tired of trying to get our dogs to behave during walks. So I looked up the school and visited. I watched trainers teaching a couple of dogs and asked them questions. Rick, the owner, came to my house to evaluate my dogs and give me advice on the dogrun we were planning on putting in on one side of our yard. Rick's easygoing manner and the calm, confident way he was around my dogs and my visit to his establishment totally sold me and I signed our dogs up. After a few weeks of training, (the dogs, my husband and myself), we all learned a lot. Our dogs understood how we wanted them to act and listened to us. We were taught how to walk our dogs using signals so they heeled, sat and stayed when we needed them to. Walking three dogs was a challenge, but it's now an everyday habit with no more worries that they will suddenly lunge or growl at other dogs. Gone are the days when they pulled us. Joyce, (their trainer and ours!), was so good to them. She was patient, but firm. I could easily tell they loved her! We have brought our dogs back for a weekend and an overnight so they could play with the dogs at the doggy day care while we took a quick trip away. Our dogs love it there. It's the only times when they pull because they can't wait to get inside. How's that for a 5 paws rating?! =o) My husband and I have heard many, many comments on how well behaved our dogs are. Just wanted to give everyone an update on my dog with the "broad and deep" aggression. Full disclosure: we found a trainer who actually understands dogs to work with us and our dog. 20 minutes into their evaluation, they said that they didn't want to make any promises that it would be a super quick fix, but that our dog was actually a very gentle dog. That her reactivity towards other dogs would be in check probably in a week. Fast forward 24 hours, they send us a video of our dog at a park totally calm as yappy dogs are walking by. Our dog now has zero problems with our cat. ZERO! They lay next to each other. They will even brush past each other in the house. We will even send her after the cat because they will play with each other a bit and paw each other. Well, she paws the cat. The cat slaps her in the face (with claws retracted). She has made the cat feel so comfortable to the point where the cat will sometimes go hang out in the dog's crate. When we are out of town, our dog stays with someone who has three dogs (2 pitties and one mutt) and roams around the house freely with them. All this is what the trainer helped us to establish. Then, we took it further. We can go for walks and she can pass a dog without incident OFF LEASH! She can be on a sit-stay at a park 50 yards away and come running when called and will even stop mid run if we tell her to sit or down. So...hmm...broad and deep aggression...requiring Herculean efforts...yeah, I'm totally comfortable with my decision to not choose Hollywood "Dog Training" School and still 100% agree with everything I said in my original review. read more

We rescued Abby, our German Schnauzer two years ago when she was two years old. She had been crated and bred three times at that age. We did not know when we met her she was on drugs! After we had her about 3 weeks she became very aggressive. Our vet said the drugs she had been on wore off at that point and showed the actual dog. So we put her on Prozac at the vets recommendation. It seemed to work, but after awhile she became jittery and afraid along with nipping! Vet said Training was the answer and that drugs alone wouldn't do it. We did a lot of research and interviewed several trainers. Then we found Hollywood Dog Training School. We were so leery of leaving our girl in someone else's hands for 4 weeks! After 10 days we got to go watch her work with her trainer, Joyce, through a one way window and were impressed and reassured. Joyce is an excellent trainer and really bonded with Abby. Finally the day came for US to be trained. We went every day for 5 days and trained with her. I can't tell you what a blessing ALL THE STAFF and the owner, Rick, have been. Even came to our house for the in home session when her resident training was over. Abby is now drug free, we are ALL trained and everyone is much happier! These people are magnificent. They guarantee their work. And for the life of your pet you can go back to their facility for brush up training with your dog at NO CHARGE when ever you feel the need. We took our rescued dog here about three months ago for on-leash training. I must first express why we decided to visit this place over much of the others in the area that provided the same services: -I called the office at Hollywood Dog Training School with lots of questions about dealing with some behavior issues with our dog, Banjo. I was transfered to Rick, the owner. I spent about 45 minutes on the phone with him, and literally picked his brain with lots and lots of questions. He was super nice to speak with, and was honest and truly helpful. Being a business-owner myself, I couldn't believe he took so much time to speak with someone, and not once did I feel like I was being rushed off the phone. He invited me to visit and see for ourself. He refrained from being quick to give me advice about what would work. He explained that all dogs are different, and that he would need to meet us and our dog and see his behavior before deciding what the right course of action would be. I was super impressed with that! He made it clear that they weren't about any one training tactic. Much of the competition told me that they either didn't believe in one type of training or another. I just didn't think that was the right answer... -Their website is extremely useful, and had tons of information about the facility, services offered, etc. What impressed me most was the section that highlighted each staff member, as well as a full biography of Rick, the owner. I felt like I was able to get a good idea of the whole staff just by what I had read on their website. We decided to visit HDTS, and were immediately blown away. Lee at the front desk greeted us, and knew us by name. You can tell by things like this that customer service is extremely high on their list. We met Rick, and were then introduced to Mia, one of the trainers. Little did we know that Mia would end up being the trainer for our dog. After seeing a demonstration of another dog from a viewing room, and taking a look over the grounds, we decided we felt comfortable enough leaving our little guy there for about 5 weeks of on-leash and obedience training. Several weeks into the training we would work with Mia and Banjo, learning how to work with our dog on obedience. Now let me share with you briefly (as brief as I can be!) about our dog, Banjo. We rescued Banjo from the SPCA in Long Beach. He immediately took our heart, and we knew he was the right dog for us. He was a total sweetheart, but what we learned early on is that he had some major separation issues, and in general lacked self-confidence. The dog we dropped off was not the dog we now have. After completing the on-leash training, we opted to have him go through the off-leash training. He is a totally different dog. We can all tell he is happier, and more confident than he ever was before. Truly, his time at Hollywood Dog Training School has changed his life, and for the better. What you need to know is that Rick and his entire life have devoted their lives to improving the lives of dogs. Every single staff member is an animal person, and you can tell that they love what they do. With over an acre of training areas, this facility is ready to work with any type of dog. They also offer a doggie daycare, which is great when boarding your animal, or for dogs that you want to socialize. Our dog greatly benefited from the socialization he learned while in Doggie Daycare. When we brought him in, he was never interested in other dogs, now he runs and plays with most dogs. We truly trust Rick and his entire staff. If you get the chance to have Mia train your dog, we highly recommend her. Banjo LOVED Mia, and we really enjoyed working with her. She has a incredible love for dogs, and is super patient. It's obvious she bonds with all of the animals she works with. There is absolutely no other place that I would trust with our dog, and have continued to bring our dog there for boarding when we are out of town. I am blown away with the staff here! read more

I am giving Hollywood Dog Training a 5 star rating because my life at home with my dog Maddie has really improved and I owe it all to her training. Her trainer, Diana is amazing. Maddie is a shepherd-mix rescue who came to me so afraid of every noise and every person (including me a lot of the time.) She cowered and snapped and when I first got her she wouldn't even walk around the block out of fear. Later she would lunge at other dogs or sometimes even people walking past on the leash - lots of pulling on the leash too. So much uncontrolled energy. Off leash she loved playing with other dogs at the dog park but would only come when called about half the time which led to the not fun game of trying to catch Maddie or asking other people at the dog park to help corral her. (Actually this was a lot of fun FOR HER playing keep-away from her owner.) Now Maddie heels like a p, sits automatically and will wait calmly in a down-stay until I release her. She comes when I call her and in general is a lot calmer. Now she isn't perfect. She still grabbed a sock out of the dryer yesterday and I had to find it in the backyard :-) She still barks like crazy when someone new comes in, but in general she is calmer, more secure and a thousand percent more obedient and fun to be around. This is not an inexpensive process but truthfully I had already spent a lot of money on classes and trying to train Maddie myself and I only could get her so far. I felt terrible leaving her there and missed her terribly. But in the end I am happy with the investment and the results. After being very happy with the on-leash training I had travel plans in August and sent her back for 'off leash." Full disclosure: I didn't realize the off leash involves a little shock collar and handheld remote. At first I felt really bad about it, but honestly it's no more than a correction with a prong collar. I even zapped myself to know for sure. And in the dog park when she was almost getting into a situation with an aggressive dog I was able to get her attention and she came right away when I called. I feel like if I was hiking and a bear was coming I have control now and it's a mini miracle. We still practice every day so she can keep her training up and not lapse back into craziness. No more playing keep away from Mom! read more

We put our 2 and a 1/2 Lab/Shepard Rescue Dog in the HDTS program and wouldn't have it ANY other way. Rick was incredibly accomodating and informative from the start and during the entire training process. The support staff is friendly and attentive. Our trainer, Diana, is enthusiastic, experienced, knowledgable and supremely effective: she transformed our "pubescent" dog into a mature and confident "woman" of a dog!! Another long weekend is coming up for my pup's in Hollywood Dog Training School, and I'm exited. Not only do we get to go out of town, but knowing that our "babies" are taken care of, is just priceless. Rick and his staff are awesome. I have had nothing but great experiences with Hollywood Dog Training School. I have had my dog there twice for doggie day care and came home exhausted, just like she should! But I am writing this review because of the exceptional grooming they just did on my Alaskan Malamute. I brush my dog daily, it is a never-ending battle. I've taken her for baths elsewhere and she comes home clean, but fuzzy. Essentially just easier for me to brush... I brought her home from a bath and blow-out from Hollywood's grooming... and I have NEVER seen her so clean and soft, with all her undercoat GONE. She's been running around my house for 2 days and barely any shedding. I cannot believe what a great job they did, I had to write this review! read more

We just completed our 4 and 1/2 week training with our rescue great dane. We had a wonderful experience and a fantastic outcome with our boy. We missed him terribly during the training, but it was the best decision we could have ever made for our dog. And feel that it was a great value. I brought my Rottweiler puppy there to be trained and I can't tell you how happy I am with the results. Stephanie was my trainer and she is truly amazing. Her love and passion for her work is quite evident when you talk to her or watch her work. I must admit, I was al little shy about leaving my puppy for four weeks but after visiting him after two weeks of training it was easy to see how happy and what a difference just two weeks of training has made. It was like looking at a different dog. Since his graduation, he now goes to day care which he really looks forward to playing with some new friends. I cannot begin to describe what an amazing experience I've had at Hollywood Dog Training School. The staff is incredible and everyone I've meet was super nice! I dropped off my 4-month-old Shiba Inu, Mari. If you know anything about Shibas, you would know that they are one of the most difficult dogs to train. I absolutely love Jacquie. She was an amazing trainer to work with. I know she had her work cut out for her. Before bringing Mari in, he was all over the place! He would jump on people, bite (softly) on people's hands, and run around everywhere (never listening to anything anyone said). Fast forward 6 weeks later and I finally have my sweet puppy home. The changes are incredible. Mari is incredibly obedient and such a pleasure to have in the home. Jacquie has turned my little "devil-spawn" into the most wonderful, loving dog. I've had family members come over and visit Mari after his stay at Hollywood Dog Training, and they don't believe that he is the same dog. Jacquie was amazing to work with. Luna, our 3 yo catahoula leopard mix rescued from a DTLA shelter, just graduated basic training! It was honestly the best money we've spent in a long time! She had several bad habits including excessive 'mouthing', jumping, wall chewing, severe dog aggression, Houdini-esk collar escaping, and pulling on the leash like a champ on a sled team! I'm glad to say that after five weeks away from home, very hard on 'dad', she is still our lovable Luna who just wants to cuddle. BUT! Now we can take her out for a walk in our neighborhood, lots of dogs, and keep HER from dragging US around. We are no longer afraid that she will escape when we open the door. Does she still think bad thoughts? Yes, she's still Luna, but now she knows there are rules, and we know how to enforce those rules. HDTS worked with the whole family to make sure we all understood how keep Luna safe, happy, and healthy. We plan on taking advantage of the free refresher lessons, and hopefully when 'dad' can stand to give her up for a few more weeks she will do the advanced training. Everyone at HDTS was very nice, and it is clear that they want the very best for all of the dogs they care for. Not only do we plan on going back for more training, we also plan on exclusively using their grooming, and boarding services for Luna. I know she will be excited to go back, and see her new best friend Diana who took such amazing care of her, and taught her to be the very best dog she could be. read more

We took Hasko to HDT since our Son took 3 of his dogs to HDT for dog training. Rick Karl, the owner, is an experienced professional. All of his staff members and trainers are knowledgeable, detail-oriented, patient and very caring. Knowledge is the key word here and my husband and I are very lucky to have our dog trained at HDT. At first, I was concerned about the choke chains but they are used as a tender signal. HDT is like a summer camp for dogs. HDT training guides the dog to it's highest potential. The end result is that our dog still has a wonderful youthful spirit yet he also respects the house rules now. HDT is the best investment we ever made. We recommend them highly. read more

Our 11 month old chocolate lab, Kona, is a new boy! He was a sweet but over the top full of energy pup who did not listen. We needed Kona to be obedient as he is also an emotional support animal for my husband. Rick Karl loves and lives what he teaches to dogs and their people. He was up for the task and patiently worked with Kona. After 5 weeks with Rick, our boy came home respectful, more calm, and definitely understands commands. We can actually have friends and family over to our home without Kona going bonkers every time, which made it very uncomfortable for all. He listens and obeys commands both on and off leash. Having him be able to hold a 4 minute off leash down stay, heal, sit stay etc with commands, has been a blessing for our family. I've had only great experiences with the training and boarding at Hollywood Dog Training. Rick, Diana and the entire staff know what they are doing and are great teachers. Our lab Cooper was boarded and trained at this facility for a month. He came back another dog, so behaved and listening it is hard to believe. David, his trainer did a very good job at teaching me and my family the commands to follow through with our dog. We thought that we were dealing with true professionals who loved animals and took their jobs seriously. PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!! I think the story speaks for itself. I boarded my 7 year old HEALTHY Maltipoo (who had never been sick or shown signs of illness in the past) at Hollywood Dog Training School for a short weekend and when I returned he was dead. They said it wasn't there fault- yet they couldn't keep a story straight. And to top it off they're lack of remorse was staggering. I'm not saying they killed my dog, but I am saying it's odd to leave a happy and healthy dog with someone else, and have him dead within a few days. Obviously losing a pet is extremely difficult and I don't want this to happen to anyone else!! read more

I dropped my dog here for a weekend and requested 3 exercises per day as she's very active. When I picked her up the bill was less than expected. When I got home and called the office to ask why, the woman who answered told me it was because they were short-staffed and my dog only had one exercise per day. The receptionist then asked abruptly if she could call me back, so I said sure. Sadly I didn't receive a call back. My dog had anxiety when we got home and I could tell she was not happy with her stay there. She had icky poops and I gave them her food to feed her as she's very fussy. I won't be returning and would not recommend to anyone. Customer service is lacking and clearly the staff couldn't care less. read more

Where do I even begin? We found our American Bulldog mix puppy when she was six weeks old. As she got older, it was apparent that our little Rogue had some really unpleasant personality traits that made life with her challenging to say the least. Rogue was afraid of EVERYTHING; cars, the vacuum cleaner even when it was off, the sound of her collar hitting her water bowl. If the wind blew the wrong way, this girl was tucking her tail and running for the hills! Then came the leash pulling. Our daily walks were a chore and something we had really come to dread. Rogue is very true to her breed; stubborn and all muscle. She would pull so hard that her front legs would come off the ground and more often than not, we would end up on the ground with her. I could go on for days! She barked non-stop. She is very very smart but her stubborn nature won out every time during our at-home obedience lessons. If there wasn't a treat involved, she would not listen. Even potty-training was a hassle after a year of constant work. We were at our wits end but not quite ready to give up on our sweet, doe-eyed, love muffin of a dog. One day at work I was talking to a co-worker about Rogue and her laundry list of problems and was referred to Hollywood Dog Training School. Two days later, Rogue made the five hour trip down to North Hollywood for her evaluation and we left her there for training and praying for a miracle. The next day we called to check on Rogue and found out that Rogue had been paired with Jackie, their very best trainer for timid and fearful dogs. Over the following weeks we were updated regularly on Rogue's progress from Jackie and Karl. Jackie was always very prompt when returning calls and always willing to listen when we remembered yet another issue Rogue needed help with. After four weeks in training we went for our first showing. We sat in a room behind a window that Rogue could not see us through and watched her walk on a leash without pulling, do automatic sits, and lay down when she was told. She even did a 4 minute down-stay with people and other dogs running around her. She walked around obstacles that, prior to training, she would have been terrified of. Jackie's personality and commitment to Rogue was exactly what she needed. Rogue has been home now for three weeks and our life with her is unrecognizable. No more pulling on the leash, no more barking unless she wants to go out to potty, and no more potty training issues. Rogue will always have that little part of her brain that makes her afraid but Jackie gave us the tools to work her through it. On occasion she will be scared by a car or a person she doesn't know but we are able to use our new training tools to return her to the calm, confident dog we love so much. Jackie told us during our last training session at the school, "Just remember, when all else fails Rogue trusts her obedience. She trusts the heel, she trusts the sit. Use it!" If you have an out of control dog like we did or if you just want your dog to learn some solid obedience skills, take them to the Hollywood Dog Training School.
