Just had one of those Portland moments... when you go to some old Portland place and it... kinda blows your mind! This Moreland Theatre is really cool... opened back in 1926. I love older-style local theaters, especially the ones with classic neon signs and marquees, and this place definitely fits that vibe. It feels nostalgic in the best way. They have a full concession stand with popcorn, candy, soda, and even beer, plus a popcorn and soda combo at pretty reasonable theater prices. I came on a Tuesday when tickets are only $5, which is such a great deal. I was pleasantly surprised by how big the theater was, along with how comfy and plush the seats are. The seating is staggered, which is nice in theory, though unfortunately I had a tall guy sitting in front of me and still had to lean to the side to see around his head. The screen is plenty large and the sound quality is solid. Parking can be tricky since the theater is on a busy street with lots of nearby restaurants, but we were able to find street parking about a block away. Doors open around 20 minutes before showtime, and they play a few previews without dragging it out before the main movie starts. Overall, it was a really enjoyable experience, and now that I know about their $5 Tuesday deal, I'll definitely be back. read more

Slope of the seating is too shallow, but people are respectful, and it works well. Saw new Blade Runner and Dune 2 here. Sound is outstanding. Wow! What a big surprise this way! Friends you are going to take a trip back in time once you enter through these front doors. From what I understand this place opened in the 1920s back when movies were silent. There is only one theater and it has the original chairs. Just be careful which one you choose because some of them are broken. Most of the broken ones are either taped off or have signs on them. I'm kind a liking this! The architecture has been kept in place and it totally has that vintage/haunted feel. They need a good Halloween movie here! Here is a big bonus the popcorn is real and fresh and they use real butter. You can also have an adult beverage with your popcorn and candy. Reasonably priced menu items. The staff here is very nice. Bathrooms are up the stairs. The tickets are about $6. Now that's a good value. They get some new releases in this small theater so if you're wanting value and a different kind of experience check it out. read more

WTH just happened? I'm just gonna give you the run down.... Pros: Cheaper than regular theaters Plays new movies Sells the regular popcorn/candy +beer/wine Cons: Very small- one room theater Cash only! Seats are HORRIBLE! EVERY.SINGLE.ONE. Springs coming out of the seats as if it was in a cartoon. Caution tape and notes on the broken ones (my bf's mom sat in one and it was broken which we didn't know about. She was leaning so far back- it was like she was laying flat on her back! The guy behind her even made a comment because it smacked him on his knee when she sat down. I get it. It's old. They probably want to keep it historic but it's feels like the Ford's theatre in 1865 and Ab Lincoln was sitting in one of the balconies. Would I come here again? No thank you! I'll pay the extra $2 and go to Costco to buy my movie ticket for $9 and experience something a waaaaay more comfortable. read more

Awesome theater in the heart of sellwood. It's a bit of a hole in the wall but the decor is super unique and historic. The chairs have been replaced with much more plush and slightly reclining seats. New favorite theater! It is, I believe, 95 years old and there is only one screen. It has so much character from the architecture to the fact that they serve alcohol. Lol! I really loved that they had what looked like a disruptive child area by the women's restroom- or perhaps if you wanted extra privacy to nurse. But I did wish there was more than one ladies toilet- I could see that being potentially problematic. We saw Aladdin here and really loved it- the staff was also friendly, we commiserated over the poor casting choice of Emma Watson as Belle in Beauty and the Beast. She's great and I love her, but Belle is a singing role!! Luckily Disney did better casting for Aladdin, it was perfect! Oh I almost forgot to mention, for being an old theater the seats were recently updated so nice and super comfortable! read more

I love the Moreland theater and have been going here off and on for decades. It is a very comfortable and well kept establishment. I would have given it 5 stars, but we just went to the new Mission Impossible, and it was too loud. I had to plug my ears during the Oppenheimer trailer. Other than that it is a great place to see a movie, and there are some good restaurants to visit afterwards. I recommend Oaks Bottom Brew Pub, Pizzicato and Stickers. read more

The Moreland feels like a relic from a time long gone. A golden age of movies, when it was somewhat of a fancy experience. When I walk up to the Moreland today, I can imagine people strolling up in tuxedos and gowns, buying two tickets and walking through the red curtains to a world of magic. Maybe the Moreland was never that majestic, but it is now a great place to buy a cheap ticket for a new movie, and slip into the magical darkness of a movie theater for a couple hours. This is the kind of neighborhood theater where you could just waste an afternoon. I saw a movie by myself here and never felt out of place. It's not as weird as going to a stadium mall theater and paying 12 bucks to sit by yourself among couples canoodling. I have also come here on dates and with friends, and it's a great atmosphere for whatever group you're in. It may be not be the most modern theater, but it's fairly clean and well-kept for it's age. My kid and I have been waiting with bated breath for "Wreck it Ralph", and while I usually wait for things to hit (or open) at theaters that serve beer, we just couldn't wait for this one. Being a fan of local independent theaters as opposed to "The Regal Experience", we landed on The Moreland (which I've been meaning to hit for a while). Remember back when going to the movies was a super cool atmospheric non industrial experience? Apparently the Moreland does too, great restored single movie theater with a fantastic screen and sound, comfy comfy seats, solid popcorn, velvet curtains blocking the outside light, and no extra 'running lights' so it stays extra dark in the theater. Which is very handy when you get a little weepy at the end of 'Wreck it Ralph' and have to stay during the credits to compose oneself. Fortunately I was able to buck my spirits back up with the knowledge that me and my kid went to a first run movie with popcorn for all of $12.25 Total bargain and a fantastic theater! read more

I moved near this theater a couple years ago so have been trying it out. An old, old theater...1920's I think...and reminds me of the old theaters I used to go to high school (a while ago). One big old theater with first run movies. As many have mentioned, the main drawback is the seats! They are in serious need of a makeover. Many of them have tape across them or notes saying "this seat is broken". So you often have to sit on three or four before you find a good one! The ones on the sides are often in better shape. Honestly, the entire inner theater would look great with some paint and new seats... could be a real showplace...but then I suppose they would raise their rates. The rates are the selling point. They have a special $5 Tuesday, which always cracks me up because the rest of the time the cost is only $5.50! Always first run movies on the first day they open elsewhere. Good popcorn, cheap drinks and even beer. Great neighborhood theater. I've been going there to see movies that I "sorta" what to see but don't want to pay ten bucks to do so. This is the first time we came here to watch 2 films, during the 38th Portland International Film Festival. Back in the days, this theater must have been grand @ one time, but this is now 2015 and in NEED OF SOME GOOD REPAIRS. The seats are too tight, they're patched up with duck tapes, they squeak, the carpeting in the lobby stained and as if you're walking with gums under your feet. I found out, someone spilt some soda yesterday (but it goes all the way to the entrance of the theater, so are they saying, they were flooded with soda? It's time those carpeting goes! The bathrooms are located in dark upstairs, that's carpeted. I have Vertigo, and coming down those stairs, is like must hold on to both hands on the railing, and pretending I'm blind, and just go v-e-r-y slowly! You can even watch the movie from upstairs, while getting in line to the bathroom door! I doubt I'll be coming back here again, unless they have another must-see movies they're the only ones playing in the city, on the date I want! read more

Great staff. Very friendly. Its like a step back in time when owners were glad you came in. The prices at the snack bar dont seem to have caught up either. Its a discount movie theatre with first run movies. Sorry its not your DINKy hang out with expensive beer and Vegan Pizza. Its a family walk neighborhood with pleanty of restaurants near by for any tyoe of food or beverage you want. The seats are what they are mostly original mostly lean back and yes they creak. I want to love this place, I truly do. Small local business that looks cute outside, good snacks and decent prices. But the theater is a dump. The entire theater is dirty and every seat is either torn, taped, stained beyond acceptable and each and every one is uncomfortable to sit in. Screen is fine, sound average. It's so hard to sit through a show that you never lose yourself in a film. Realistically the folks who are giving this 4 or 5 stars are folks trying to support a small local business or just are so pro "old Portland" they are looking past the warts. I get it and appreciate folks like this, but I'm deep down a realist. Will I take my kid - once in a while but I won't enjoy whatever we're watching. Sorry, the seats suck. Staff is nice. read more

I wanted to love this place and love to support a small theatre, but sadly this place is a complete dump. I have never seen anything like it. Many of the seats are broken with tape stretched across them. Others have the stuffing completely hanging out or are ripped to shreds. Disgraceful. I live in the Bay Area near the beloved old Grand Lake Theatre. This theatre is lovingly cared for and adored by the locals. This place sadly is desperately neglected. read more

I was shook when I went inside this theatre for the first time. It felt like I'd been transported to another time. It just looks so vintage and classy, as if nothing's changed in 70 years. How old is this place, even? The smell of fresh-popped buttery popcorn emanating through the air triggers feelings of nostalgia without fail, and when you go upstairs to the bathroom there is a balcony area with a window that lets you see the movie while waiting in line to piss, as there's only one toilet I'm pretty sure. Some of the seats have kind of had it and should definitely be replaced, but otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Incredibles 2 here and plan on going again for a matinee showing, which is only 5.50. read more

Came here to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on a Sunday night. It's a cute little neighborhood theatre with a single screen. The seats were not very comfortable. Not really sure about the reviews that talk about "plush red seats". Maybe plush red back in the day, but now they're just old and faded. Two tickets and a coke came to $18... which is cheap for a city theatre but still kind of overpriced for the experience. read more

One can get a little spoiled expected a theater to also be a restaurant, but the popcorn's good here, adequate beer selection. Terrible experience here. The older guy who works here with grey hair was being super rude to everyone in line. When we got up to the ticket counter he told us that these other people were first who just sort of came from the other side and inserted themselves in front of us. As though we were at a bar or something. The theater itself is in terrible condition, I would describe it as derelict. This is not "shabby in a charming way." It's full on gross. Some seats are taped up and out of commission. The seat my boyfriend sat in was wet so we had to move. The rows are way too close and there's almost no decline so if someone sits in front of you, there's no seeing the movie. Of course, with our luck, a whole family picked the seats right in front of us (when there were tons of open seats) and we had to move again. Once we got settled, we realized it was FREEZING in there. There must have been no heat on at all. The whole movie I was distracted by my hands and legs being so cold. Whoever owns this place is investing NOTHING in the theater. Overall, we didn't enjoy the staff, and they had no good beer. We didn't feel comfortable, and the Sellwood locals are downright rude. Very snobby. I won't be going back. read more

Like normally uncomfortable, but excessively bad when you have a sore and broken coccyx and a big medical boot on your left foot due to being an idiot in inclement weather. Considering my last theater review, I must say, this is more like it! The Moreland is comfortable, lived-in, and friendly. Not an ounce of corporate anything to be found! And that's the way I like it! The owners meet & greet you, the popcorn's fresh, the lobby is filled with antiques, the 1 screen theater is a pleasure, and the way films were meant to be watched. I thought the sound quality was very good, and as an added bonus, we were not subjected to vile commercials...just slides enticing us to buy popcorn, probably left over from the early 1970's. The slides that is, not the snacks! Stuart & I went to the 8:40 showing of 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button', a three hour epic...it was grand & highly recommended! I cannot speak highly enough about this film, and we paid a walloping $6.75!! Compare this with the last movie-going fiasco, and it becomes obvious what the big theater downtown lacks...that would be a sense of humanity, for starters... The aisles are wide, but not gigantic. The seats are, to my mind, normal sized seats. They were not built when the average American packed in thousands of calories a day & weighed in at well over a bazillion pounds. In other words, if you're not huge, these seats will accommodate you. Are they in tip top shape? No, some of them are squeaky. Some of them have springs that have seen better days. There is one drafty toilet in the Ladies Room at the top of the stairs. There was a line, but it went fairly quickly. Does it have a beautiful old theatrical curtain? No. No Mighty Wurlitzer either, I'm afraid. But it has personality plus, it has soul, and the owners are genuinely glad you stopped in to watch a movie. I like this place a lot & will make it a point to see future films here whenever possible. read more

I recently made my first visit to the Moreland Theater to see Gran Torino (a good film, by the wide. Sidenote: Dear Yelp! - Movie Review section?). As we walked in I looked around and immediately began to doubt they were going to take my debit card. It just had that small, mom-and-pop feel to it. I was right, cash was required. Luckily there are a number of ATM options nearby and we arrived early enough, so it wasn't an issue. To quote a review below me, there truly is "not an ounce of corporate anything to be found." It definitely feels very local, very personal. The owners (at least I assume they were the owners) greeted us on our way in and thanked us on our way out. All in all, a pleasant experience and above and beyond the typical "service" you've come to expect from chain theaters. The quality of the picture, sound, and seating was a-ok with me. I did notice that there is a section of red seats that look more comfortable than the rest. We sat there, and it seems everyone else did as well. They were just as comfortable as any theater seat I've been in, so I'm assuming the comments in other reviews about uncomfortable seats are referring to the other seats. Overall, at $6.75/ticket it's a good deal. Don't expect the latest and greatest sound and video technology, but do expect a pleasant movie experience. I know I'll be keeping my eye on their reader board, waiting to see what will play next! read more

Gah, I loved this theater. Granted, I have a thing for really old buildings and pretending that I'm living in the 1940s, but this place is still pretty great if you have any appreciate for cute little unique neighborhood finds. The seats are small, but still surprisingly comfortable. I didn't have a problem at all. The theater itself wasn't super crowded, which was nice. The price was also great -- I think $5 a ticket, which makes me super happy. This is going to sound incredibly nerdy...but I thought the bathrooms were super cool. You go up this staircase and there's a point (at least on the women's side) where you come to a window and can look out over the whole theater. Pretty neat. The staff was nice and the location was great. It's located in a great little neighborhood with a lot of stuff within walking distance. The only downside would probably be the movie selection. I'm all for independent movies or older movies or harder-to-find newer releases, but it seemed like the feature that was playing here (and they only play one at a time) didn't change for a few weeks. It only makes me sad because I would absolutely come here more frequently if there were different movies...but not a huge deal. The Moreland Theater is a historic Sellwood gem built in 1926. The theater provides a friendly alternative to watching movies at a busy multiplex. The Moreland has a huge auditorium that rarely sells out and tickets are purchased at the door. The price is very reasonable ($6.75 adults, $5 discount tickets for matinees, seniors, and kids); however, it is important to bring cash, as the Moreland does not take credit cards. There is a bank and ATM nearby if you do forget to bring cash. The popcorn is fresh and the concessions are reasonably priced. At my last visit to the Moreland, the theater was not very busy since it was an early show during the week, but there were a decent number of people attending. This was the first time I have been to the Moreland since they put in their new digital projector. The picture was comparable to other digital movies I have seen (I personally preferred the 35 mm which unfortunately has become obsolete). The seating at the Moreland, like so many of these old theaters, varies from seat to seat. Some of the seats are newer and more comfortable, so I recommend coming a little early so you have time to try out your seats and finding some you like. One of my favorite parts of the theater is that there is an upstairs viewing area next to the women's bathroom, so if you need to wait in line to use the bathroom or just need to take a loud child out of the theater, you can still watch the movie. I highly recommend the Moreland theater to everyone who enjoys watching movies, visiting historic theaters, and saving a little money. read more

My girlfriend and I went here for the first time a month or two ago. We walked in and sadly, spied no beer at the concession stand. Strike one. (Come on, even the multiplexes are selling $6 cans of PBR now!) We went inside, had a seat and not only was there a soda cup in m'lady's chair (strike two), but we were then assaulted by the sound and fury of rust-encrusted springs in our backs and bums. Strike three. We asked for and received a refund. All of this is a true bummer for me. I love Portland's movie theater culture! And since I recently moved to the Sellwood area, I was optimistic to find that there was a classic theater right there in the 'hood. But this is Portland, bro, and I'll tell you the same thing I told Cinema 21 (who has made some amazing improvements): you've gotta up your game if you expect to compete with the likes of Laurelhurst, Academy and Hollywood Theaters. Despite living in walking distance from Moreland, I'd rather drive to one of these far superior joints for a movie, good pizza and a beer in a clean, comfy environment than brave the tetanus-springs of Moreland's seats again. On the positive side, the folks here are friendly and they show good movies at reasonable rates. But here's hoping Moreland can see their way clear to improving the seating situation and improving the upkeep. And for christ'sakes, would it kill you to add a few taps? read more

Okay, I love coming here to see movies - and would give it another star if it wasn't always soo cold in the theater! I literally have to wear a coat, scarf & bring mittens. I also have to bring my airplane blanket (not stolen, the flight attendant explained that they thrown them away after each use because it costs less than laundering them) for my lap. Also, they keep it so dark in the theater that unless you were a nocturnal animal, you'd have a hard time finding a seat. As it was, today the theater was pretty crowded (Les Miserables) so we had to take seats at the very back and wait 5 minutes for our eyes to adjust. We then made our way to seats in the center of the theater. Luckily, I could see the seats because my poor parents were stumbling about, and had to be led by hand to their exact seat. So...why do I love this theater? Because the theater entrance doors are shaped like the tops of those beautiful Russian monuments you see in the movies (they also remind me of Alibaba or I dream of Genie). Okay, that's actually just a cute feature. I love the theater because they play first run movies for $5. I also never have a hard time finding parking on the neighborhood streets on the back side (they don't have a lot). The building structure has seen better days, but if they don't remodel (to keep up with all the multiplexes) they can continue to charge half the price...and that's just fine by me! read more
