This review has been almost a year in the making. If you are thinking of starting a large scale Solar/PV project. I would recommend Holu Hou Energy.  I did my research and contacted Holu Hou Energy & Kumu Kit. One contacted me in 3 days and the other contacted me in 3 months. Because of the scale of this project, I will break down my review into section. Initial Contact/ Project Sales In December 2022, I contacted Holu Hou Energy, and in three days, Sale Representative Cynthia contacted me, and we set up a meeting.  She was very informative and made every aspect of the project clear. The financing was done on the spot, and the payment did not begin until the system was active. System Inspection/Install/Activation My home was built in 1979. Needless to say, something needed work. Matt came by and did the preliminary inspection. My roof was bad and needed to be replaced. Holu Hou Energy had partnerships with True Home Hawaii Roofing. I don't have to stress and find a company to replace my roof. It was included in PV system financing.  System installation and activation went smoothly. Negative Aspects Like with any construction project, working with multiple companies can slow things down.  Hawaiian Electric Company permits and approvals took a while. City and County of Honolulu  permit have been pending. That is not Holu Hou Energy fault. Closing Holu Hou Energy was the wise choice, they handle everything from beginning to end. If I can give this solar company a "0" I would. Their staff are such liars. They will tell you on how it's going be done and at the end they change on what you agreed on. How do you like the fact that you paid for the system and they took the incentive from HECO. This is a company you can not trust. If they can take all your money they will, and if you have any issues with your system, they will get back to you when they feel like it. They are a money sucking company. Great people and great product!!! We have had our Holu Hou system now for just over two years and we couldn't be happier. We started getting solar quotes in 2021 but no vendor could meet our expectations. We wanted to run our entire house in case of prolonged grid failure while also minimizing our electrical bill. And by run our house I mean power all our appliances, run a dryer, run a water heater, charge a car and still have excess power. No other vendor promised they could do that. Only Holu Hou stated their equipment could. And it's easy to see why, their product is industrial grade and very heavy duty designed for commercial and multi-family. When I first met them I didn't realize they even did residential, I thought they only did big projects and thought ours was too small for them. The other vendors told us we had to have a separate circuit set up in case of power failure to run the essentials such as lights and refrigerators. One vendor even said we could plug an extension cord into our battery to run stuff?! What?!?! I wanted the WHOLE house backed up and Holu Hou delivered. We did not do this to be "green" or save the planet. We did it because we wanted our own power plant and wanted to have the ability to run off-grid with a system that would pay for itself. We now have 50 panels and 4 batteries with two 10kwh inverters. 32 x 400 kwh REC solar panels, 18 x 280kwh LG panels (existing panels) and 4 x 13kwh batteries for 52kwh of battery storage. We started with eighteen 280kWh LG panels with micro inverters on them. These were integrated into our Holu Hou system by removing the micro-inverters and running them in DC to maximize efficiency when charging the batteries. It is a big system but I wanted it sized for the winter clouds capable to run the main house and our Ohana unit, so think two refrigerators, two ovens, fans and AC in the summer. We also have a solar water heater but in the winter we often run it off the electric to keep the water hot on cloudy and low sun days. The people: The first person I talked to was Josh Carroll. He was thoroughly professional while also being friendly and easy to have an honest conversation with. These systems are very expensive so I wanted to have an honest conversation if it was right for us. I was also very demanding about what I expected out of the PV/battery system and Josh ensured it would deliver. I also spoke with the owner Ted Peck on multiple occasions as we worked through the issues with Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) and HECO. He always returned a call or email and was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the PV systems and process of getting approved through DPP. Headaches: Our biggest headache was the Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) and HECO. The DPP was under federal investigation at the time for corruption. They delayed permits and HECO delayed our interconnection agreement after the system was set up. This was annoying because we were discharging into the grid and getting no credit. Soooo I disconnected from the grid and we ran off-grid for four months during the winter while HECO figured out our agreement for signature. Would I do it again and what would I do differently. Yes I would absolutely do it again. What would I do differently? I would have left my original 18 panels alone with the micro inverters as a separate system. Why? It has to do with how the Battery Bonus program works. During the day our system is programed for the panels to do nothing but charge our batteries up, they do not power the house at all and we have to purchase power from HECO at the current rate of 0.40c/kwh. If those 18 panels were on a separate system we would be able to run most of the house off those panels and not purchase power from HECO while our other 32 panels are charging the batteries. This is specific to the Battery Bonus Program which requires your panels to only charge your batteries until they are full or until 6pm. Once the batteries are full or you reach the discharge time of 6pm, you can then draw from your panels or batteries. The batteries discharge into the grid from 6-8pm, after this you can draw on any power left over during the night until the batteries are drained. Credits With federal, state and HECO credits we will break even on our entire system costs in less than 6 years. Warranty Panels are 25 years. Batteries are 10 years. read more

I met with one of the salesmen canvassing our area for the Gems program. I liked what he was talking about, so I went ahead and moved forward with the project. After finalizing everything and getting approval from HECO, they completely ghosted me. They never kept me in the loop about what was going on. I always had to make the effort to contact them for updates. They finally gave me an installation date of February 2024. Well, February came and went with no one calling me about the installation. After me having to call the salesman and the company six months later, I finally got the installation. I am now waiting for someone to give me the app so I can see what my system is doing, and what do you know? No one is still helping me with that. I'm 8 months since install and I still haven't been hooked up to HECO so bill is only decreased but I am getting no credits. Had no idea it would take this long. Apparently paperwork or plans are incorrect and it has been sent back on multiple occasions for changes. All communication along the way has been because I have initiated it. No one calls me or emails or texts to give me updates. Kinda frustrating and it definitely makes you feel like you are unimportant or have fallen through the cracks. Was really hoping to support a local company but so far I have not been pleased. Communication is key and there has been none. I can be understanding IF informed. I'm very disappointed at this point. I'd like to blame HECO but my business wasn't with them. read more

He addressed my questions, came up with a perfect solution to maximize the benefit of the new TOU program offered by HECO, and the technical team worked tirelessly to resolve the issues to put this into effect. I simply couldn't be happier with the rapid response and hard work put in by the CEO & the technical team at Holu Hou. The system appears to working fabulously now and should offer tremendous benefits to any customer that gets a smart meter installed by HECO. By switching to the new residential TOU program, the Holu Hou solar & battery system using the modified CSS (customer self supply) will enable significant savings. We started our PV journey with Sunetric. However, in the process they went bankrupt and Joshua introduced us to Holu Hou and did an awesome job of picking up where we were and completing our project. Matt and his crew were very professional and completed our install very efficiently. Holu Hou has also taken over helping us to maintain our original system. These folks are buying info from someone and cold calling. I would have been fine with this. However, when I asked where the rep got my information, she stated that she got it when I entered it into their website. This is a complete lie. We have full solar panels, a battery, etc. and have zero need. Okay so as we were coming close to finishing the renovation on our home, I need to look into Solar PV, I had to see how this works and if it is really worth it because these systems cost a few dollars. So, I really did my research and this was a hard one for me to believe. I must have gotten estimates from at least 5 or 6 companies, let alone called over a dozen. I must have read over 100 reviews. Having that said I was still not sold on this because every company I researched had about a 50/50 review, either they were happy with a 5 star or they we upset with a 1 star. I met Josh from HOLU HOU and he was cool and strait forward, he explained their system and how it works, as every other company had the same Panasonic panels and tesla battery, HOLU HOU was different. I tried to check their reviews but could not find any as they were a new company on the market, he said they did big commercial projects. Josh really explained the whole industry as he been in it for a while. There was one other company that I thought was pretty good, but did have a few bad reviews. Well after probably almost a year I decide to go with HOLU HOU. I took a chance went with my gut feeling and gave them a chance. They were actually the most expensive by a few thousand dollars. The one thing that sold me was their SERVICE, don't ever buy anything from a mainland company and call a 1- 800 number if you know what I mean. Always go with your gut, it paid off. These guys were great from design to permitting, to approval from association, they did everything. The install of panels was impressive (I work construction) the electricians were awesome, top notch. THE SERVICE WAS GREAT. Any questions or concerns they were on it. I contact Ashley in the office, I contact Matt for tec stuff. And I called Josh prob over 100 times ...LOL and emails. He always replied. They are a great team and very good local service. I recently changed internet provider, I missed matts call so I called him first thing the next morning, by the evening my internet was up and running on my app. My system is great we went with a little extra power to be sure the system will handle all our needs and more. At best you can get a return on your money from 3-5 yrs. at worst 5-7 yrs. Thanks to HOLU HOU I bought a Tesla! I should be getting a return on my investment in a little over three years. The app is a little hard to understand, but you can see what its generating, so if you monitor and use correct you can save hundreds of dollars a month, now I'm saving another $250 from not buying gas.
