I've had a Haleakala PV system since 2013. This year I decided to add a Battery Bonus system, and I got estimates from a number of companies, and once again chose Haleakala solar with a Tesla Powerwall. The sales person seemed pretty knowledgeable about both the product and the various options including Battery Bonus. He did a site survey, and confirmed my new equipment would fit into my desired enclosure. After paying my deposit, I received an initial design plan from them. I wanted to make some changes to the plan, which they quickly accommodated. They also submitted the plans electronically to DPP, and filled out and submitted the paperwork to HECO on my behalf. Couldn't have been easier, and took about 4 weeks. The coordinator sent a very complete outline of the various steps in the process, and an estimated time frame to complete them, so there was no surprises. My original panels had developed a squeak after many years of high winds; Haleakala came out and repaired the issue, including finding and fixing a crack in my Munir tile. My install was 2 weeks ago. The first day, they installed 9 new PV panels. The second day, they completed putting in the wiring and the new Tesla battery and gateway. About a week later, they returned to provision the entire system, which is operating now. Next step will be inspection and permit approval. I'm very happy with the sales process, design process, and installation so far. I have every reason to believe that they will handle the rest of the process shortly subject to when the inspector is available. My only issue to date has been that one of the circuit breakers they installed tripped the evening after the install. They ended up sending out a tech after hours to show me how to get back online, and then came back to address the issue permanently during the next appointment. read more

I submitted two online service requests regarding an issue with our Tesla battery not charging. The first request was submitted on September 12, and I received a text message stating that someone would respond within 72 hours. Unfortunately, I did not receive any follow-up. Fortunately, the issue with our battery resolved itself. However, a phone call from Haleakala Solar would have been appreciated to acknowledge the request and offer support. I submitted a second request for a call on September 16 and again received a message promising a response within 72 hours. Once more, no one contacted me. This lack of customer service has been a reoccurring issue with Haleakala Solar. When we first installed our PV system six years ago we had issues with our solar water heater. Getting someone to answer and respond to our calls was very difficult. We finally received service when my husband drove over to their warehouse to talk to someone there. read more

My house came with a set of panels from Haleakala, and I expanded to more panels plus battery last year. I've always been happy with the crews that come out to do installs and repairs. The work is solid, the installs are well planned and look nice. However, HSR's terrible at responding to other inquiries and repair requests. Their tech line almost always leads you to a voicemail that will never be replied to. Online requests go ignored. I've literally gotten spam emails from Haleakala saying "let us know how we're doing" that go unanswered. Sometimes I end up begging Enphase, the equipment vendor, to get Haleakala to respond. My core problem is that my system's reporting in terms of production and usage is way off from what HECO reports. According to Enphase, I'm sending a net surplus of power back to the grid monthly, meanwhile my latest electrical bill is over $200! That's with 30 panels AND battery backup! I want to get to the bottom of this. I'm guessing they have staffing issues, like everyone. And honestly, if I got an answer copping to that, I'd have more understanding. Instead it's radio silence. This company is HORRIBLE! I bought a solar water heater back in 2016 for about 12k and just a couple of years ago it broke down. They told me I needed a new heater! Good thing one of the workers from the office had compassion and came over to replace a part that was faulty. This was December 2022. Now the heater is not heating up again! I called a month ago and they did not respond til 18 days later! NO HOT WATER. I complained that why did it take so long and they made excuses & still have not done anything for us. We're with COLD WATER STILL! I am so disgusted with this company. Don't waste your money with them, POOR product and POOR service! ***** I'm response to the owner's comment: You folks reached out "18 DAYS LATER!" And gave me an "EXCUSE". We had NO HOT WATER for 18 days! And still Don't have. And what I sold on is not true. My Bill is NOT LOWER. I'm still paying a high electric bill! I feel SCAMMED & I DID NOT Decline service.. I replied, saying "No Excuses". You the OWNER, In my opinion, need more training. First of all, take accountability for your poor service.. and don't argue with the customer, you should know this, it is basic customer service. The fact that you are still making excuses and arguing with me, yet again confirms your POOR service. I recommend you get training so you can properly train your staff. And you have the nerve to send promotions by email offering produ tax. How about first address the service? Look at the previous reviews here on yelp. There are many 1 star reviews. Other customers and myself have spent a lot of money for your product and you're failing us. Go through the reviews again, we're trying to help you, but you're not listening, making excuses still. It's been 2 years since we put a down payment on a solar PV system and battery. The company said they were having a hard time getting a permit but we never saw any drawings so we don't know if anything was submitted. They did not submit any design to my townhouse association for approval. We no longer wish to deal with the company and want a refund of our down payment but the company does not respond to our emails and calls. A reputable company would do the right thing to reach a settlement. What's more irritating is that they continue to send us promotional emails encouraging us to install a new system. read more

Like many of the other recent 1 star reviews the problem is (mostly) not with the crew that went out to my Mom's house in Manoa, it is with the response she is getting for service. She had an installation done a while back, noticed a leak a couple of years ago and was told it was because of the leaves under the panels. She started a regular maintenance program of removing the leaves and ended up having a second batch to panels installed this February of 2024. Guess what? She now has leaking (I believe as of April 2024) under those panels as well and was initially told that it was the roofers fault. Maybe so, but why are the only leaks coming from under the two PV panel installation locations? This is a historic home and the longer it is put off, the more expensive it is going to be to repair all of the damage. The roofers have come out to look over the situation, unlike Haleakala and they say that the PV should be removed, all roof penetrations resealed and then the PV replaced. With the current service, I cannot see my mother using this company again, nor recommending Haleakala to any of our clients in the future. read more

Just got my Tesla solar roof installed from the only company on Oahu that can install to date (04-15-2024). From the office crew to the frontline workers, this company was really good to work with as far as quality and the installation process. The process was a lengthy one that is a fact and the equipment are being shipped from the mainland so just be prepared, which is why I almost gave a 4 star rating but then end result was all that mattered to us as homeowners. Jim the owner really took action when our initial roof tear off process was getting sour with a sub contractor Headed Home roofing when they was cutting corners leaving a very bad taste in our mouths. It was not the cheapest route as there are cheaper and much more faster options out there. But the photos speak for themselves, and the curb appeal is awesome. The Tesla solar roof was a great choice for us because we needed a new roof and wanted to install solar at the same time. Haleakala did an outstanding job in explaining the process and Max the sales rep is very knowledgeable with the current incentives Hawaii state and the federal has to offer. The office manager Sasha and Anela were both on it when it came to permits and contracts and getting the necessary approvals for work to start. RC the project manager was always very transparent and very clear and prompt when it came for work to get done even if it meant for him to fly in from Maui. Rich the superintendent electrician and Alfredo the foreman electrician are both local guys they both were easy to talk to and I asked a lot of questions about it and they were very chill cool guys to talk story with to explain how the electric side of it works, and they both are very intuitive and straight forward and have expert knowledge on how solar works. Jeff who was the engineer and designer for my Tesla roof is also very knowledgable. Please if you are in the market for solar, I highly recommend Tesla solar roof depending on your situation. Used Haleakala Solar twice. Once back in 2012 to install 27 solar panel and another in 2023 to install an additional 5 panels and a battery. In the past they were reliable however in Aug 2022 one of the original panels went bad. They changed the inverter 3 times before testing the panel which was the problem. Once determining the issue they informed me that Canadian Solar was no longer in business however after doing a search I found out they were in business. After filing the claim and getting approval for the warranty work Canadian Solar said that the panel is no longer in production however they would send a replacement which is larger than the original. I then raised the issue of racking integrity in high wind. It was now Oct 2024 more than 2 years after reporting the problem. No one responded to the questions. I reached out to their Manager, Brian King who said he would reach out to me but never did. Finally I got in touch with their CEO, Jim Whitcomb who instructed his Service Manager, Issac Morales to contact me. A month had passed and no one contacted me. I informed Jim that no one contacted me which he said he would follow-up. Finally Issac responded but I already informed Jim that I would seek another company to do the repairs as I can no longer trust Haleakala Solar. In summary it seems like staff of Haleakala Solar doesn't value customer service although their CEO understands the importance. Until that changes I cannot recommend this company. read more

I had a 20 panel system installed in my roof 12 years ago. Actually paying more to keep local People and companies working. For the first few years things were fine. Then the micro inverters started going out. The crews that came out to replace them were knowledgeable, courteous kind, and efficient. Getting anybody to call me back and schedule repairs has been nothing but unresponsive. Calling several weeks up two months in a row with no response. I have been dealing with not producing and not reporting panels since October 2022, over a year and a half. Not only have I paid for repairs, but now I'm paying for electricity to Hawaiian electric company. I don't think it's too much to ask for the company to uphold their end of their warranty. I know the company has been bought out by Peterson Dean, a large company from the mainland. And now is possibly been purchased back by the original owner Jim Whitcomb. I don't like giving negative reviews, but I would not recommend anybody using Haleakala Solar due to their poor customer service. read more

Horrible Customer service. Wish I had never gone with them. Installed my solar and now my batteries have melted. They came out and said we have to order them. It'll be 4 to 5 weeks. That was August 31, 2023. And now it's October 2, four to 5 weeks later. I have called six times since last week and they said oh we will have somebody call you. I contacted Haleakala Solar because they and Petersen Dean roofing sold me the system. I wanted them to check my batteries and they are not charging properly. I get a response that they charge $300 to look at it. I asked about the warranty and they said they will not cover any Petersen Dean installs. I'm posting this review to prevent others from having a poor experience when making a large investment in solar. I DO NOT recommend Haleakala Solar, because they do not honor promises, are not truthful, are unresponsive and lack integrity. Their website displays good ratings, testimonials, etc. that can easily build consumer confidence. However, I highly recommend doing your own research and checking with family and friends for recommendations. Things to consider when making your decision: panels, batteries, inverters, warranty & SERVICE. When a company is either unresponsive or slow to take action regarding an issue or for any other reason, your experience can easily become very labor intensive on your part, since you will be the one making multiple calls and doing the chasing. The sales process went very smoothly and I signed up with them to serve both my Maui property and added more panels to my home already being served by another company. This is my POOR experience: Maui Property - When I informed the Company that there was no change to my electricity bill, the owner promised to fix the issue and reimburse me. In the meantime, emails, phone calls and texts were either not responded to or the response was that more time was needed, that something else came up that prevented him from working on my issue. Finally the issue was fixed and he reimbursed me after about a year from when I first brought it to his attention. Home - a) the quality of work was sub-standard. The lead technician advised me that the reason for my continued high electricity bill was due to not making the right connections with my existing panels, but denied saying this when I met with he and the owner to discuss reimbursement. The technician was extremely defensive during the meeting. b) workers forgot to plug in my freezer and all the contents spoiled. c) workers were often late and never acknowledged their tardiness. d) Though I was promised a reimbursement, the owner denied any wrong-doing and did not reimburse me. It's been 7 years now since my PV panels were installed by Haleakala in 2012, and I decided to write this review today because yesterday, after the rain, my panels stopped generating electricity. I checked the panel and looks like somehow water got in and I noticed that my Envoy unit was not powering on. I emailed Haleakala and within an hour, their service manager called me up and setup a time to come out -- the same day! They went on the roof, checked all the cabling, re-sealed and air dried everything, changed the circuit breakers that got damaged, and were done. That's what I call good customer service! Unreal! I've also asked Haleakala to service both my panels and water heating system in the past and they did a great job. Mo, Geo, Dawson and the entire team at Haleakala is awesome! I'm not sure if Jerry is still with the company, but he did a great job as well. If Haleakala management is reading this, please give them a raise and a bonus! If I had a chance to install more panels, there's no doubt I would go back to Haleakala, and I'll definitely recommend Haleakala to anyone installing panels. Will never recommend. Bad product (I have had so many issues with my solar panels) and even worse service. Had installed in Dec 2019. My solar panels have been on "Standby" since Monday meaning not collecting energy at all even though it has been perfectly sunny. Been getting nothing but runaround from their customer service people or no call backs at all even from technicians and owner. Absolutely regret using them. Contacting the Betyet Business Bureau next if I do not get a response today (Wed 9/6). read more

I am totally not impressed with Haleakala Solar. I've had my system for 5 years now. When we had it installed we told them we wanted to zero out our electric bill. They installed it and we always have to pay 200 a month. I have called and wanted more panels. They have sent 2 separate people out and they never ever get back to me. I have called the office and requested Brian a supervisor to please call me and he never gets back as well. Their customer service is horrible. The sales people will tell how great they are but when it comes time to get help or service, they want to charge you under warranty. Be careful when dealing with this company as they can't honor their products. Communication is not good either. Sorry if you feel this is a free service. I purchased my system though Haleakala even though it had a parent company of Petersen Dean, so please try not to disassociate yourself. If your company wanted to start over, then you should have started a new company. If you want to preserve your company's reputation, then at least honor a simple service call to troubleshoot the problem. Otherwise, start a different company. read more

They did a great job expanding my solar system for the third time. They added another 11 panels to max out my roof and garage and installed 2 Tesla powerwall batteries. I've got 2 Jeep hybrids with level 2 chargers but my electric bill is still only $19 a month with this new setup. Even better is thy hooked me up with a HECO program that got me $8500 in rebates for adding the powerwalls. Their staff are professional, courteous, and did a great job. read more

Needing the ability to be able to give negative stars. From the beginning nothing but lies and BS! Don't waste your time or money. They have their scam all worked out, they lock you in with an estimate then get your $1k deposit then it's nothing but games. They told me after we contracted and paid the deposit that I would need to pay $4k more for an electrical revamp if I wanted my house and appliances to work off the batteries in the event of an outage. I had three different solar companies tell me that was complete BS! I dug deeper on the internet and found several recent complaints from people experiencing exactly the same issues I was having with them. The owner is completely aware of the issues and doesn't seem to be able to respond to phone calls or emails. It was not easy but I did manage to get a refund for my deposit. Ironically a neighbor had signed up with them about the same time I did and they started working on their solar 8 months later! The crew was completely unprofessional and it looks like a mess in their roof. The sweaty crew also convinced the idiot homeowner to allow them to swim in their tiny pool and or took the liberty to just have a swim break. Do not walk, run away! read more

Steer clear of this company. It has been 10 months since I signed a contract with "Haleakala" (don't let the name fool you, this is a mainland company called PetersenDean). In that time I've gone through 4 or 5 different "project managers", each more clueless than the last. They have revised my contract multiple times - they don't know what they are doing so they don't know what permits they need. They even cancelled my install ON THE DAY OF because they had finally had an engineer look at the design and it wasn't feasible. Don't call, don't sign a contract, don't even think about doing business with these incompetent fools. By the way - their contract tries to prohibit the customer from giving negative feedback online. Imagine how many more unsatisfied customers are out there who are afraid to post something. read more

I heard about Haleakala solar from a friend so I thought I'd give them a call. I needed my previous solar system checked out since it was not generating enough hot water. Getting an appointment was very easy, fast and straightforward. When the service tech came he explained everything that he was going to check and how long it would take. It rained that day and it was very slippery as my foot is super slanted, so he did all he could with the hot water heater and electrical panel then came back the next day to service the roof panels. We'll suffice to say my hot water was 100% more efficient the very next day and and has been operating exceptionally well since. I know that when it's time I will be giving James Escobido a call, he has a great reputation and is very easy to work with. We have our system up on the roof. We were told to update our home policy. Last thing Heco needed. Easy. Done. Now we cant even get a hold of anyone! From last week. Our calls keep getting sent to an over flow in the mainland. They are really nice but really no help as they said they would relay the msg and someone would call me back. No one has called, emailed or anything. What happed to our project manager Iris? She was good. We were told we were getting different manager? Why? She had really good communication. Ugh... some one help... maybe hire more locals in Hawaii in your office staffing. Update: 4/2/2020 We have communication people! Got a call back from our original project manager Iris this morning. She will continue being our project manager. We are super happy. Having good communication with this kind of work is key! Not to mention the amount of money you invest with these systems. Time is money! Money is something that we all need to save. Especially now while everyone is being laid off with Covid -19. Mahalo for giving us back our awsome project manager Iris. My husband and I became Haleakala Solar customers through purchasing our new home that came with purchased Haleakala solar panels. Haleakala, once you reach a local representative and interact with them, provides decent service. I've had positive interactions with my service lead, and technicians on site who are all Oahu based. The problem is that Haleakala was acquired by Petersen Dean Roofing in the mainland, so all of the customer service calls and inquiries get routed to their reps on the mainland, many of whom don't know anything about Hawaii. That is why their responses when you send in a request or complaint are slow, and communication is not consistent per the multiple complaints you see on this page. Haleakala / Petersen Dean needs to hire more Hawaii staff, centralize their customer service department and have all Hawai'i customers handled locally here. My recommendation to work effectively with Haleakala is to contact your Hawai'i-based service manager / technician directly, rather than call the customer service number which routes you to the mainland Peterson Dean office. The Hawaii-based service manager and technicians do care, they are just understaffed and overwhelmed after the company was acquired. read more

Doing another review since my last one. I tell you the only thing I can say was bad was the setup of the appointment. You call the mainland and they promise to call you later to schedule but no one calls. So after the second attempt I got contacted by Dorian..cool guy....I will stress to the company that I wouldn't try to get people credit card information over e-mail for security reasons but I was able to pay with credit card when the techs came. Mo!!! That guy is awesome, real down to earth and very patient with me, took the time to explain how to flush out the heater and helped me with setting the timer....the crap that came out of my heater, the calcium was quite a bit.....I also scheduled my neighbors one and also another unit at the property and everyone thought they did a great job, they even changed out the the electrical box for one of them. Anodes rods were replaced and they also were upfront about the HECO rebate. Loved the service on the back end but there needs to be work done with scheduling. Overall that's the only thing that stopped me for giving them a 5 this time. I previously gave them a 5 back in '16 the last time they were out. read more

Actually NO stars are appropriate. Beware of this company! Although they have changed ownership, the new management has limited staffing (which we didn't know at the time of purchase) so things take time and they have not been very responsive. We put a deposit down for a small NEM Plus system at the end of August. A site survey was done in September and design was completed in October. An electrician came out on 10/21/21 to give us a proposal for additional work we were considering. In talking to the electrician to get clarification how the NEM Plus system would work with our existing NEM system, the information we got from the electrician was inconsistent with the info we received from the salesman. I emailed Haleakala to get clarification. It's been over a month and Haleakala still can't explain (don't know?) how their NEM Plus system works with existing NEM systems. Haleakala asked if we wanted our money refunded which we said yes. It's been almost 2 weeks and we still have not received our refund check. (Note: if you charge your payment, Haleakala keeps your charge info in their files.) If Haleakala hopes to stay in business, they better know what they are selling and improve their business practices. read more

The denial of the permits wasn't what disappointed and frustrated me so much as the fact that it took MONTHS to hear back from you regarding the status of them. Your own employee (the third or so account manager) informed me that your company "dropped the ball" and failed to update me on the denial only after I called your company to check up repeatedly over the course of months saying that I sadly "slipped through the cracks". Your own VP Tom Halmos also agreed after looking at the notes in my account that by fault of your company I was not informed for months on the status of my permits. When the Hawaii location manager informed me that my refund would take over 30 days that's when I reached out to Action Line and wrote my review and it is only after that did I get my refund a days after the initial week+ I had been dealing with managers and "customer service" reps. No compensation was even offered or made after numerous requests on behalf of your company for their failures to - at minimum, communicate with me and handle my account competently. Again, waste of time and money. read more

In mid-June one of my solar panels stopped working. From their web site I submitted a service request (at first I left a voice mail message but they then sent an email asking me to submit the electronic service request form). Sasha and Sadejsha provided rapid responses to my situation and questions, including explaining that they would have Enphase try a software fix and if that did not work, a replacement inverter would be ordered. About a week later they contacted me after Enphase could not implement a remote software fix and soon after we set up a repair date. I was happy that the new inverter was a free warranty replacement (Haleakala installed my system about 10 years ago so they have information on the system's history). There was an installation service fee but that is fine and was expected, so no controversy there. Kekoa came to install the new inverter. After discussing the best way for Kekoa to access my roof (rain gutters and overhanging roof tiles presented ladder issues), Kekoa did a fast inverter replacement and all is good. In all, it was about a 14 day process from service request to new inverter installation, which is fast for this type of business/situation. We had an issue with the solar system not reporting the production of electricity generated. I called Travis at Haleakala Solar. He responded immediately and the issue was resolved. Travis and Haleakala always respond effectively responsibly and resolve whatever problems have arisen. This has been my past experience.
