I've been all about supporting mom-and-pop restaurants for over 15 years now, but my experience at Holy Khao was unfortunately not that great. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt--it may have just been an off day due to the holiday, but I still felt like we were treated differently compared to other diners. The restaurant went through renovation, and it looks very clean and bright. We were seated quickly since there were a couple of tables still available, and the waiter came by to take our order right away. The appetizers came out in about 10 minutes, which was pretty fast! However, the entrées took another 25 minutes to arrive after we finished our appetizers. It felt like they had forgotten our table, especially since another group that was seated after us was already halfway through their meal by then. The food itself was disappointing. I loved the original restaurant and used to come here often, so I was sad when I heard the owners had retired and a new family had taken over. With all the social media hype, I decided to give the new place a try. Unfortunately, the pad Thai was super sweet, and the noodles were a bit overcooked for my taste. The other dishes were okay, but the portion sizes were small-- especially considering the new prices, which are about $5-6 higher than at SBT. That said, the original spot was pretty cheap for Thai food, so I wouldn't mind the price increase if the portions were more filling. They also charge an extra $1-2 if you want your food spicier. The only dishes that really stood out were the nam khao and the larb; they were very good, though they could've been more generous with the lettuce. There was a mix-up with the larb, too. We ordered pork larb, but the waiter brought it out and said it was chicken. We double-checked with another waiter who also insisted it was chicken, even though our order slip clearly said pork larb. A third waiter ended up taking the dish back to the kitchen to confirm what it was, which was a bit confusing and frustrating. What bothered me the most was the dessert. I ordered the pandan jelly at the beginning of the meal; it was the one thing I was really looking forward to. I saw other diners who arrived after us get theirs right away, so I assumed they had just forgotten ours, like they did with our entrées. I didn't mention it until the end of the meal, but when I asked about it, the waiter came back and said they were out. That really upset me, especially since I had clearly seen multiple other tables who came in after us, receive the same dessert at the beginning of their meal. We were seated in the middle of the restaurant, so it's not like they couldn't see us. I'm hesitant to come back and give them another chance. It really felt like the waitstaff and owners treated us differently than other tables. It's a sad experience, especially since SBT used to be my favorite Thai/Lao restaurant in the North Dallas area.

WHAT I ORDERED: Nam Khao, Beef Jerky, Pad Kee Mao, Chicken Wings, Khao Poon Chicken, Papaya Salad, Crab Fried Rice, Side of Sticky Rice PARKING: Shared parking lot, tighter spots and limited parking INSIDE: The place is unassuming and simple yet bright and welcoming. Everyone was friendly and it's also BYOB. THE FOODS/DRINKS: The nam khao was too crumbly and missing the different sized clumps of rice I'm used to. The papaya salad, beef jerky, and side of sticky rice is a must combo that you should order. I ordered the spice level "Spicy" for all of the dishes but it only met my expectations on the papaya salad, the rest of the dishes didn't have that heat. The chicken wings had a nice crunch on the outside and was juicy on the inside. The pad kee mao was great, crab fried rice a little bland, and khao poon chicken was good.

Just found out about this place that has a new owner and is bringing her own spin on Lao and Thai food. I came in middle of the day 2-3ish time frame which is good for me and my family with my wife and two absolute menaces / toddlers. Here's what we tried: 1. Beef Jerky - actually not even sure I've had something like this, it was kind of a beef jerky / deep stir fried beef? not sure, maybe even Hmong style, but sh*t was gooooood! Probably my favorite item. I ate it with a side of rice. 2. Beef Pad See Ew - wayyyy better than 93% of thai places in the area, love the use of big fat wide noodles that suck up the flavor. I am not a veggie lover so next time I will ask for no veggies, extra noodz. 3. Chicken Khao Piak - I've never had this before but it's very similar to Vietnamese banh canh. Thicker round noodles served in a rich broth. It's no pho, but it might be the next best thing. Drank some Thai tea and it was on par with a lot of the boba shops if not better. Was able to speak with the owner for a little bit, and she said they are still updating the menu and tinkering with some of the recipes to make it their own. Overall amazing meal, can't wait to go back.

HOLY KHAO!! This new lao thai restaurant is goooooooooood!! Holy khao took over management of SBT lao thai and man is it a good takeover. They remodeled the place and it's nice and clean. The food is so authentic and amazing. They're still in their soft opening phase and working out some kinks but the new owners are extremely hard working and figuring things out fast. my top favorite dishes so far: khao poon, khao piak, papaya salad, Laos sausages and the green dessert drink!! I'll be coming back to try more dishes on their menu!!

Stopped in again at Holy Khao because I was craving authentic Laos and Thai food and it did not disappoint. It's a bit hidden in a small strip center with limited seating, so it can get busy. Service is always on point. We ordered the Laab Beef, Beef Jerky, Tom Yum Shrimp, Egg Rolls, Sticky Rice, Papaya Salad and the Fried Tilapia. Every single dish was bursting with authentic flavor and cooked to perfection. Laab Beef- So good. I ordered it medium and spicy, and it had just the right amount of heat, balanced with fresh herbs, lime, and seasoning that made it addictively good. Beef Jerky- Perfectly seasoned and marinated, with a great texture. Tender inside with the perfect chew. Egg Rolls (2)- My husband is still talking about how good these were. Crispy, golden, and packed with flavorful filling. Tom Yum Shrimp- The perfect balance of spicy, sweet, and sour, with bold lemongrass and fresh shrimp. Fried Tilapia- Fresh, crispy, and fried to perfection without being greasy. Served with dipping sauce that tied it all together. Sticky Rice- Soft, warm, and perfect for scooping up all the Laab and sauce. Papaya Salad Lao Style- Shredded green papaya tossed with tomatoes, chili, fish sauce, and lime for that bold spicy-sour punch. The food here always tastes fresh and authentic, and you can tell the kitchen takes pride in every dish. Service is warm and welcoming, which makes the whole dining experience even better. Holy Khao continues to be my go-to spot for a Laos and Thai food fix and I highly recommend it.

One of my favorite Thai restaurants the Dallas area is now under new ownership since the owner decided to retire. It's now called Holy Khao and the new owner kept almost everything from the old menu. The restaurant got a renovation as well, it used to look very run down. I got the panang curry and my dad got the chicken pad kee mao and Thai iced coffee. The curry had a ton of chicken, bell peppers, onions, and a side of Jasmine rice. They had spice levels from 1-10 and I chose 3. The rice soaked up the curry pretty well, which had a little kick. My dad enjoyed us pad kee mao as well. We got some of their khao lod song to go. It's a pandan jelly noodle in sweetened coconut milk. These are sooooo soo good. You can eat it with a spoon or get a big boba straw to sip it. The pandan cheeses are nice and chewy and the sweetened coconut milk is like liquid gold

New owners did a good job cleaning up the place and revamping the menu. They still have THE spiciest Lao papaya salad in DFW imo which you can adjust on a scale of 1 to 10. We ordered take out to try a little of everything during their soft opening and every single dish was a banger! Can't wait to come back with my family next time!

The BEST Thai food i have had. Everything was so flavorful, reasonably priced, friendly service, and large portions.

Take out: Lao sausage (ea order has 3),Khao niao (sticky rice), thum mak hoong (papaya salad), and jeow som (sour dipping sauce).

I love Lao food so much. My introduction to sticky rice, papaya salad, and Lao sausage was in the home of some dear friends originally from southern Laos. As refugees, they were placed in an apartment near Cedar Springs and they made the best of life there. Always so generous and kind I was invited to dine there regularly. The last sausage, sticky rice, and papaya salad from Holy Khao reminds me of the homemade food I had in that apartment off Cedar Springs. Fresh fresh fresh papaya salad and sticky rice. And deliciously seasoned sausage not to mention jeow som for the sausage and sticky rice, especially. The service is professional, kind, generous, relaxed, and knowledgeable. I appreciated their interaction with me. The space is clean and seems to be in transition as it relates to decor. Please, please please visit this place often. We need them to stay in business and be very successful. I look forward to going back as soon as I'm able, even though I currently live an hour away. Kopjai laylai Holy Khao. I love the creativity in your name as well!

I ordered the basil fried rice (spice level 2) and the pork fried crispy rolls. The spice level 2 gave the rice a subtle kick - noticeable but not overwhelming - which is just the way I like it. The basil fried rice was packed with egg, bamboo shoots, baby corn, mushrooms, bell peppers, white onions, fresh basil, and garlic. The flavors were balanced, and the portion size was VERY generous - this was way more than single meal for me. The crispy pork rolls were also very good. They were filled with pork, green onions, glass noodles, carrots, white onions, and cabbage, and served with a thin sweet & sour sauce that complemented them nicely without being too heavy. Even though I ordered them as an appetizer, they arrived midway through my meal, so not the best timing. The fountain machine wasn't working, so drinks were $2.50 for a can of soda with no refills. That felt a bit steep for a canned drink. I count that as a downside of the visit. Overall, the food was flavorful and generously portioned. With small improvements on the drink situation and meal timing, it could easily be a 5-star experience.
