At least the brisket has a smoked ring. Out of all 6 pieces (1/2 pound) there was one I could cut with the plastic knife and fork. The fat was the best part of this meal. Mac and cheese was cheap nacho cheese sauce poured over the mac - very sad. Cornbread muffin was okay but the honey butter had a strange flavor, perhaps rancid - I'll know tomorrow. I dont know how this place could have a 4 star average?? I guess most customer have never had good Texas BBQ or my brother's brisket. I always give a restaurant 2 chances. Have been wanting to try for a while but since we had a load of groceries, we decided to get it to go today. Sat down to eat our lunch when we got home and my husband dove into his Burn Out which was very good. Brisket was moist without being fatty. However, I opened the container for my Over Loaded Potato and found a big bad spot that could not have been missed when the potato was washed, cooked, or plated in the container! So many chances to see it and someone decided it was good enough to serve to a customer. Pretty unbelievable. After I removed and trashed all the bad area, the potato itself was good, and the tri-tip, while not over abundant was lean while not too fatty. Also tried the muffins which were good. THIS IS A TWO PART REVIEW. Our first time visiting Holy Smokes was a bit mind blowing. We have eaten at Franklin's BBQ in Austin, TX (World Class and the best d*mn bbq on the face of the planet), and when we found Holy smokes here in Yuma, it shocked us. They were so close in Flavor profile, and in texture it was exciting! We thought 'OMG, we've found our second favorite BBQ joint, and one that we can visit as often as we want while we are here in the winter'. It was amazing. Everything from the Spark plugs to the Queso Mac , to the Brisket and the Pulled Pork. It was all to die for. Then, tonight happened. We were so impressed last time that we decided to order 2lbs of the Brisket and the Queso Mac as a side for our going away dinner. Heading back to the Great White North and wanted that same home cooking that we had come to know and love. We splurged. SOOOO DISAPPOINTING. We are parked pretty far away, it's a good 30 minute drive to get there and we were on a tight schedule to get some stuff wrapped up before taking off. When we got home, the package was still very warm (not quite "hot" but near close enough) and we dug into it right away. What we opened up to was brisket that was tough, rubbery and dry. The fat layer hadnt even melted and if you stood it up on end it bounced in the wind. EPIC FAILURE HOLY SMOKES. It begs the question: Did we first eat there on a great night? Or did we catch them on a bad night today? Regardless- consistency is everything. We know bbq. We know brisket is supposed to be tender, and moist, and fall apart. So tender you cant hardly pick it up with a fork. And with that kind of money spent on a meal ($58) it should be consistently worth the price. It was not. And we will not chance that again. I was pleasantly surprised to find they have a keto/ low carb menu section. I ordered the Keto Poppers & a salad. The keto poppers were so delicious! I'll return just for those! I went with a group of people. Everything looked delicious. Two people ordered meals that didn't come with a cornbread muffin, so they asked to buy one. Holy Smokes would not sell them a muffin, saying they were running low so they were saving them for people that ordered different meals although they had also said more were baking. It was odd. I got the Leto platter with brisket. I asked for no cheddar cheese but it was on everything when I got it. The bacon wrapped jalapeño was great, the cabbage was good. The generous portion of brisket was anything but good. I couldn't chew it & I don't think my dog would be able to either. I got maybe 2 small bites that I could chew up. We stopped here after a long day of sun and state parks in Yuma. We found the patio empty of other people and decided this was our place. I had the pork with the white sauce. Oh, so good. I do love some Alabama white sauce. The queso mac and cheese was delicious and the corn bread was awesome. The other half had brisket, with the white sauce and his was excellent too. My wife arrived, was greeted promptly, and informed that our larger order was still being prepared. At this time, my wife was asked to change the Spark Plugs appetizer to something else as they had sold out for the day and so we opted for the Smoked Wings. Nearly one hour later, at 7:25PM, my wife received what appeared to be our complete order which she inventoried after sitting back down in her car before leaving the parking lot. While checking our order, she noticed that the side of Smokey Bear Beans was missing but decided that after waiting nearly an hour that it wasn't worth going back inside since we had plenty of other sides to choose from and that we would just chock it up to a loss. Once my wife arrived safely back home, I cracked the foil lid on the Last Supper and was shocked... "Where's the ribs?" "Where's the BBQ sauce?" In place of the 1/2 rack of ribs was an additional "1/2" pound of brisket - the burnt undesired ends - a change made without our knowing. Before me there lay a bunch of smoked meats but with no delicious sauce to smother on top - a true shame. Is this how all carry out orders are - sauceless? The Queso Mac & Cheese had pieces of crunchy gristle garnish throughout - not very desirable. Over priced for a cheap experience that was bland in taste. Small portions, plastic silverware, serve yourself from a pump dispenser for bbq sauces all at a high end price. The main dish for $14.99 was shreaded pork that came in a paper frenchfry container(very small) with one corn muffin and you had to add your own sauce. Any sides were $3.50 more in same size container. They even ran out of domestic beer on a Wednesday, i only got one. Would not recommend or go again, a complete waiste of money. Watch the prices on the menu though - what I thought was a 1 on the menu was a 4 - due to the font size and the way it was printed. This place offers unique bbq sauces and the meats are incredible! I had the Keto plate with brisket and the White BBQ sauce and my husband had the Pick your Poison with the half rack of ribs with the Classic BBQ sauce.
