We were looking for a healthy lunch after my daughter's college tour at University of Delaware. I found Roots Natural Kitchen on Yelp and it looked perfect. They feature rice bowls and salads. The service was a pleasant and professional assembly line. All staff were working to assemble a delicious bowl. I went with the El Jefe and had bbq tofu instead of chicken. Lots of cool seating in a modern and bright restaurant. I really enjoyed my bowl, all the parts tasted fresh and high quality. Was in the area and wanted something quick but healthy and found myself at roots. There was a nice amount of customers and the associates were quick and efficient which I live for in these assembly line, quick dining type of establishments. There were many options to choose from so for the sake of time I chose a curated bowl "el jefe" and it was delicious! Looking at the bowl I wasn't too hopeful that I would enjoy it but the flavors are on point ! I will say they were skimpy on the protein and greens but not on the rice which I'm sure is what I was mostly filled up on lol. You can also request this particular bowl with "the works" which adds lime and hot sauce. Took two stars off due to cost and cleanliness of store. Not too sure if there is a rewards program but I would consider using it if I would give some sort of discount. A plus is kids eat free ! read more

Unfortunately this was only the second time I'd eaten at Roots in the 4 years I went to UD because now that I moved I can't just go back whenever. It seemed like this place was a fan favorite among all the students on campus and even for the people in the surrounding community. What I enjoyed were the large variety of healthy food options which they either stuff into a bowl or maybe a burrito (can't remember). They give you a massive amount too which was awesome! It's been years since I've gone to Roots as a regular, but I still find myself dreaming of their El Jefe bowls. I love it so much that I've tried recreating it at home and it just doesn't hit the same. Their bowls are so fresh and delicious, with every ingredient working in a perfect harmony with each other. On my most recent trip to Newark, I revisited Roots and did not leave disappointed. One thing to mention though.. these bowls are pretty pricey for the area. I think it's worth it given the quality and the quantity of the food, but something to keep in mind. The staff were kind and efficient, prepping my bowl in just a couple minutes. Although I think they forgot to add Sriracha, they did absolutely pile my bowl with tons of chicken! This came to at least 2 servings for me and each one was filling and didn't sit heavy on my stomach. If you're looking for a clean, healthy food option on Main St I couldn't recommend Roots enough! read more

Hiiiiiii Lovely Yelpers :-) I have three (3) words or shall I say three letters: OMG and the "G" stands for good-ness!!!!! Lol I've never had a salad from this place, but I wanted to check it out. Today was the perfect time to go and order a salad MY WAY (singing in my Usher voice). The staff was friendly, management was courteous and the restaurant was clean...Yes, clean! I look for things like that when I'm a guest/customer. Anyways, the smell of deliciousness when I walked in danced up my nose and did the electric slide to my stomach. I have been dining at Roots since they opened, I have been ordering the same "create your own" bowl for years now and today I was told that my order was not allowed by their GM, Maria. I requested BBQ tofu sauce as my create your own dressing, however I was told that it was only allowed to be used for the tofu. I am very sad about this as this is the only thing my husband will eat from here. Sadly, I am going to have to discontinue our weekly orders. I tried to contact ROOTS directly on their site, but the button to "leave a review" did not take me to a page where I could leave a review. They offer many different varieties of bowls and salads, or you can make your own. You have a choice of greens, grains, proteins, other veggies, and dressing. We both ordered straight off the menu and enjoyed our food. The price was extremely reasonable considering the large size of the bowls. We both left with a full meal's worth of leftovers. Best quick healthy food option in the area. I travel here for work and I can't go a week without stopping by here at least once! Perfect post workout lunch/dinner. The bowls are great! I usually personalize my own chicken half salad half grain bowl and I am always given MORE than enough food. The staff is always friendly and there are usually places to sit (inside and outside). The location can be slightly frustrating when trying to find parking but that hasn't stopped me from making my way here whenever I'm in town. Yes. So so happy Roots is up near where I live! The first and only time I have been to Roots was when I visited my best friend in Charlottesville, VA. I was obsessed with it then then when I heard it was in Newark I had to check it out! I got the make your own bowl with brown rice, roasted broccoli, corn, cucumbers, red onion, pita chips and feta. I then got the Greek feta dressing to finish it off. Everything tasted so fresh and yummy :) The only thing I would wish is that I could have gotten more chicken. The portion they gave me was little but I didn't want to be charged more for more chicken. Next time I want to get the BBQ tofu that looked really good! Overall a great experience :) read more

Roots is my favorite thing about the entire state of Delaware. Recently moved to California and can't find anything quite like it here. The best part about Roots is the unique flavor profile that is balanced between fresh and satisfyingly hearty. Most of the flavor comes from the dressings, but the balance of textures (i.e. feta cheese, pita chips, dried cranberries) adds to the cohesiveness of the bowls. Proteins are well seasoned and don't overpower the meal. I usually ask for half rice-half greens as the base and this works well to distribute the flavors and not have it too dense. The Apollo is my go to, but highly recommend the El Jefe if you're more hungry (includes half an avocado!) or the Mayweather if you want a salad (also half an avocado). Not a huge fan of the ambiance of the space. Layout used to be a froyo parlor so there is an awkward narrowness when in line and the music is always pretty loud so it can be difficult to have a quiet conversation. Service is fast though - unless they run out of chicken and have to grill more, which has happened multiple visits. Quality and value of the food makes it worth it though. Overall, best place to eat on Main Street for quality and quantity of food. Highly recommend. read more

Their entire menu is completely customizable and if there is something included in the bowl you do not want they'll allow you to substitute it for another add in without charging extra.
