Most unprofessional experience I've ever had. Do not trust this guy with the most important and expensive purchase of your life. He is not knowledgeable (made several errors), incredibly difficult to work with, and has the temperament of a petulant child. Edit: Some red flags for future readers - 1) this is the only home inspector of the five we reached out to who required full payment BEFORE the appointment. 2) he sent the original contract at midnight the night before he cancelled and cancelled it at 6:30pm, meaning he gave us less than 18 hours to read, sign and pay for a contract. 3) Since he cancelled on us last minute, I politely asked (pleaded, even) for him to reconsider - I said I would pay and sign then, but he denied us. This guy is probably sadistic or sociopathic at the least - it seemed he took pleasure in leaving us without help. 4) There are several typos in his reply above - keep in mind that this is who will be analyzing your home and writing your 100+ page inspection report. (John, this review is long overdue and for that I apologize.) John's name was on an inspector recommendation list my realtor provided to my boyfriend and I after our offer was accepted. After a quick Google search I felt confident this was the man for the job and didn't even call a second or third inspector to get pricing. That was probably stupid on my part considering how quickly these types of miscellaneous fees pile up, but it was not a choice I ended up regretting. A couple of things you can expect from him: 1. Prompt communication: John is great with all modes of communication and as someone who was swinging this purchase during business hours in between meetings and projects you have no idea how much I appreciated that. 2. Digital payment capability: I appreciated being able to pay for the inspection at the time of my appointment booking because like I mentioned prior I was trying to pull this off during work hours. I wasn't even sure if I'd be able to make it with the realtor to open the house for him so being able to square the payment away ahead of time really put me at ease. 3. Thorough and meticulously written reports: John's reports are written in such a way that they can easily be used as a guide (which is exactly what we're doing now). He groups his findings into three categories so it's written plain as day what is not acceptable, somewhat acceptable, and recommended to upgrade. Not only that but he also tells you the type of contractor to contact to complete the work he is pointing out is needed (which completely takes the guess work out for first time homeowners like myself). John, thank you for being able to fit us in so quickly! We didn't end up closing in two weeks because the sellers didn't want to recognize the capital gains this tax season, but we still very much appreciate you having been able to squeeze us in as quickly as you did. John was great! We are first time homebuyers and he did an extremely thorough job of investigating all the areas of the house, and all with a great attitude. Thank goodness we found him on Yelp! Details: He arrived right on time and it took about 3+ hours for a single family home, and he went through the roofing, exterior, structure, electrical, heating, cooling, insulation, plumbing, and interior. This included going down under the house as well as into the attic, and took numerous photos of problem spots throughout his explorations. At the end of the inspection, he sat down and walked through all his photos/findings with us and made sure to address any questions that we had in a unbiased and straightforward manner (e.g. not an alarmist but also didn't downplay problem areas). He also included a guide for home owning maintenance at the end that has good tips. Not only were we impressed, but also our agent and the seller's agent were too! They even asked for his contact info so they could use him in the future :) Report: Within a couple of days, we received a detailed report. It included all the photos as well as additional reference information around each issue as backup. Price: Very reasonable and for a quality inspection! We hired John Laforme from the Home Inspection Authority to do an inspection for a home we ended up buying last spring. He charged a little more than the last inspector we used but it was a quick escrow so we were glad to have someone come out last minute to inspect the home. John showed up on time and the whole inspection was rather quick. He showed us some issues at the house and later sent a thorough inspection report. The reason for the bad review is that 8 months later we had a plumbing issue. When running the kitchen sink, I heard what sounded like someone pouring a hose into a pool beneath the floor. So I crawled into the crawlspace and found a severely eroded pipe. By the severity of the pipe erosion, I figured this had to of been going on for several years, yet along during the inspection. The plumber I hired to fix the pipe adamantly agreed that it would of been present during inspection and the inspector screwed up. I contacted John about it and he said there weren't any leaks during inspection. Take a look at the pictures I posted on their Google and Angie's List reviews. If you think this pipe could of eroded this badly in only a few months, hire these people. If you think this damage would take several years and this guy did a poor job, then look for another inspector. read more

I found Home Inspection Authority through Yelp. I appreciate the details John provided when we hired him for our home inspection and sewer. He found rust in all the plumbing, hot water heater, mold under the dishwasher, window and hvac ducts, issues with roof and flashings and the list goes on and on. This prompted us to get plumber to get give further opinion and quotes and roofer estimate. We also got mold tested and they came out positive. We felt we had loads of information regarding the house we are interested in buying. John came with 2 guys for sewers and another guy for home inspection. We were told not to bother the guys but John was there for any questions I had. Honestly, I was a little apprehensive about using home services found via Yelp. Had a pretty bad experience with plumbers found on Yelp despite the glowing 5 stars. After my experience with Home Inspection Authority, I regain a little bit of confidence back regarding Yelp. John and his assistant (or staff?) arrived promptly. He is professional & knowledgeable. Finished the job within 2 hrs like he said he would. Price was the $$ he quoted me. Everything ran smoothly and the overall experience was pleasant. Was able to use his home inspection report to negotiate (put in a RR - Request for Repairs). That was a huge help and sigh of relief. All in all, 4.5 stars. Here's a 30 day update to the review I wrote for Home Inspection Authority,( 5 stars for his service, 1 star for giving out my personal contact information = 3 stars). Since I wrote my 7/15/2015 review, I've received phone calls/emails from alarm companies and other 3rd party vendors like 'sewer guard' which offers coverage for my Water and Sewer Lines. Apparently John uses the personal contact information you give him (cell phone and email address) to allow other companies to solicit you into buying 3rd party services. It's in his contract, so if you don't want to get unsolicited calls and emails (at 12:31am?) from other businesses trying to sell you things, ask John to delete it from the agreement, or just use another 5 star Home Inspection company.
